titleCorporate Social Responsibility on blockchain
body

Two years ago I saw this presentation of Dan Larimer, at Virginia Tech, where he addressed different use cases of enterprises adopting blockchain, not because of tokens, but because of the “value added by it’s security, auditability, and accountability”. This year, for the USA presidential elections, Associated Press, which has been tracking vote counts in U.S. elections since 1848, decided to publish it’s votes count on blockchain in real time, for the same exact reasons.

In a world where it’s easy for anyone to create a “news” site, traditional media is looking for better ways to ensure the integrity of their content. With fake news on the rise, traditional media needs to evolve, so instead of charging the reader to access their content, Associated
Press is adding value to the integrity of the vote count in an unprecedented way. Two years after Larimer’s talk, we can now witness his vision being implemented.

“The liability for not using industry-standard best practices is potentially huge. So that’s why I’m confident that blockchain technology is going to be relatively ubiquitous. It’s going to be completely transparent and no one’s going to know they are using it. Because it’s not going to be pushed by people directly. It’s going to be by businesses. Businesses that are looking for efficiency, security, reduced liability, regulatory compliance. It’s going to fundamentally transform every area of society. From banking to government, to voting, you name it.”

Food for Life Global (FFLG), a nonprofit organization (501c3) based in Delaware, represents an international network of over 200 plant-based food relief charities in 60 counties serving up to 2 million meals daily. For this reason, FFLG is the principal charity partner of the feedOM kindness ecosystem that offers the OMGuarantee™, a certifier of measurable Corporate Social Responsibility.

Following the lead of Associated Press, feedOM is also using the EOS blockchain to capture purchases of their OM Guarantee™ certifications, and the subsequent contributions that are passed on to their charity partners to feed needy children, feed rescued animals, and/or plant trees.

At the member directory at feedOM’s webiste, the public can see OM Guarantee™ certified companies and track each and every transaction made, published on the blockchain. This is the first milestone in a three-step plan to improve the transparency of their operations. The second milestone will involve the charity partners confirming the donations received on their end and the third milestone will be to transfer these funds to a token pegged with USD.

“Rather than regulations coming out that are going to try to suppress blockchain technology, I believe It’s going to be mandated, I believe that companies that don’t adopt these standards are going to be like companies that don’t secure their infrastructure today and cause losses to their customers”

This is another example of how companies can reduce costs in infrastructure, adding value for their customers, and it’s my opinion that we will see this kind of adoption more common in the near future.

I'm glad to be able to help feedOM blockchainifying their operations, by a thousandth of the cost of what other blockchain companies offered. title2nd EOS Community Conference
body![](https://miro.medium.com/max/1920/1*OBqrtAtOhISvXVBWVCPSxQ.png) The [2018 EOS Community Conference](https://medium.com/@eosgravity/eos-community-conference-2018-listening-to-voice-of-global-eos-community-from-south-korea-64a44d67e5ea) was held in Seoul, Korea shortly after the launch of the EOS Mainnet. This event was mainly a place for the BPCs to make themselves known to the holders and get votes. In [October 2019, the second EOS Community Conference was held](https://ecc.eosrio.io/), and it was nothing like the first. The second ECC was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. You can not ask for geographic decentralization of the nodes, if you do not try to reach the regions where EOS is not so popular, and that is why focusing on Latin America was a very smart decision. Thanks to EOS Nation and its Ambassador program, and being their ambassador to Latin America, I had the opportunity to go and meet some of the celebrities of the EOS ecosystem. The event lasted 4 days, from intro to blockchain, conferences, deconferences and even work tables to make plans or even start working together on the improvements for EOS that we will soon see. The keynote speech was led by [Yves La Rose, from EOS Nation](https://www.linkedin.com/in/yves-la-rose-41669034/), with the theme "[Reigniting the Magic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_Xu-Qslqos)". The year 2017 was impressive for blockchain, and 2018 was, for many, a disappointment of unrealized expectations. Yves talked about what role BPs play to help meet those expectations. It was impressive for me to be able to talk to Yves and learn a lot from him as a leader. ![](https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/0*jdhOueeSIkQZtBko) Several of the conferences focused on how Latin America is the perfect place to adopt blockchain: we do not trust our governments, we have superinflation in the currencies of many countries, and the economy of all countries depends heavily on remittances. For people in the United States, who have never changed their dollars, to listen to the experiences of latinos who listen every day the exchange rate in the chicken bus on their way to work, is to know another reality. On the other hand, people who see on blockchain the opportunity to make trading easier, a stable coin may sound ridiculous, but for some people in Latin America, it is a solution to not starve, literally. Applause to [EOS Rio](https://eosrio.io/), [EOS Venezuela](https://eosvenezuela.io/), [EOS Costa Rica](https://eoscostarica.io/) and [EOS Argentina](https://www.eosargentina.io/) for achieving this space of presenting Latin America as the best place to adopt blockchain. ![](https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/0*YoP5gtOUnUfaAZEa) The 2nd half of the event was 2 days to discuss problems or opportunities for improvement. Thanks to his charisma, [Daniel Keyes of EOS Nation](https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniel-keyes/) served as a project manager, placing an order on the deconferences. There was a space for everyone to express their opinion of the issues to be discussed, opinions were organized into categories, and they concluded at work tables to attack the different problems. As a programmer, I focused on technical work tables. ![](https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/0*Sq52Z1G27U3HXl0H) The technical aspect of EOS has always been its strongest point. I have always said that EOS is the most "dev-friendly" blockchain, but like every engineer, we always see an opportunity to improve things. One of the priority points that was discussed, was the full-history-nodes, as they are very important part for the apps. I was very happy to see how all the participants in solving the problem agreed on the same solution: a load balancer of [Hyperion](https://eosrio.io/hyperion/) nodes. This takes advantage of the existing effort and gives developers a single access point facilitating development. The second topic discussed was to improve network health by reducing latency and thus improving interconnectivity between nodes, to reduce skipped blocks. Software reforms were defined to define the order of the BPs and it was seen that it is a relatively easy change to adopt. This adds a lot of value to the blockchain, and we hope to see it soon in the [Jungle testnet](https://jungletestnet.io/). Finally, the issue of inter blockchain communications, or IBC, was discussed. After much discussion, it was concluded that, although, from a marketing point of view, it sounds very attractive, technically it is not necessary, or has a very low priority. We did not find a use case that depended on IBC, and it was concluded that at the moment it is not an issue to solve. The [EOS Community Conference 2019](https://ecc.eosrio.io/) achieved its goal, which was to make the community live together and create bonds to improve trust. And although blockchain is based on "trustless" transactions, technology only takes you to a certain point, and as Yves said in his talk of reigniting magic, "everyone, although competing with each other, works with the same goal", to create a better blockchain, and this is only achieved if there is trust among those who create it. There are many things that I learned beyond the facts that I narrate, and I hope I can make time to relay them, so if you are interested, I invite you to follow me to read more my opinion about it. ![](https://miro.medium.com/max/1080/0*YGcpjzqVAaNiRA7P)

titleMy first time travel experience
bodyIn my last article, I wrote about the time machine I’m building and I’m leaving written evidence in the blockchain to prove it. Before starting on this adventure, I did not believe that time travel was possible. But a mayor event in human's history made me experience time travel for the first time, proving that it was indeed possible.
![EOS Launching Team](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/9344/1*POJ-tqA9bXL6YeDgViraww.jpeg) *EOS Launching Team*
I had been chosen to be a part of one of the many teams around planet Earth who were synchronizing the launch of a new operating system, something so unique no one had never seen anything like it before. I left my friends and family for a trip into the unknown and I didn’t know how long I would be gone for. It took years to achieve the communications, confidence, security, and certainty to turn on this new operating system, because once it was turned on, there would be no going back. Hundreds of people, endless calls across multiple time zones, tens of thousands of man hours invested in until we finally press the power button. It was a total success and in June of 2018, the EOS Mainnet was born. After tracking this new operating system for a few years and making sure everything was going according to plan, I would go back to my old life. I would retire on a farm far from technology, or possibly write a science fiction book. I imagined the rest of my life as a final chapter of some television series. With more pounds of weight and less hair on my head, I eventually went back to my family. But when I returned, I realized that for those whom I had left behind, it had not been more than two months. That was the moment I realized time I could travel through time. [The EOS blockchain operating system had been developed for over a year and was ready to go.](https://medium.com/eosio/eosio-1-0-release-ca67ad3aa78f) The first app that would run in this new operating system would be a distributed banking system. More than 400,000 bank accounts with a total [initial balance of more than USD $ 4,000,000,000](https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/31/a-blockchain-start-up-just-raised-4-billion-without-a-live-product.html) would be handled within one second after the EOS network was initiated. Approximately 200 teams from around the world participated in the launch of this network. Most teams, known as Block Producer Candidates, had never seen each other before. Were they equally committed to the project? Were they technically qualified to operate the network? Could we trust the other teams? Or were they interested in injecting malicious code to manipulate and take over the funds?
![Teams in other time zones](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/0*oCNobOmpbZK9o4hr) *Teams in other time zones*
Or even worse! Were they members of other blockchains who stood to gain a lot by making the EOS launch fail? Were they part of the traditional banking sector and trying to keep us in the past? Who could we trust and would other teams trust us? In our team, the roles emerged organically. Everyone was doing what they could do best. I was the project manager and I started this like any other project I had previously handled. I defined tasks, divided them into sub tasks, evaluated priorities and assigned responsibilities. We did the paperwork, filled out some forms, acquired equipment and started writing documentation. Built the infrastructure, the servers, the nodes, the services, and connected to other nodes. Several teams already knew each other and had begun to try to connect with each other. We had started late in the race, and several groups had more experience than us. Thankfully, being first didn’t matter and the more experienced teams were happy to help others. The goal was to launch the network, together.
![Hours long video calls](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2560/1*ZcPjFYXAOu-48WvIxRDjfg.jpeg) *Hours long video calls*
Suddenly, everything started happening in fast forward. The discussion channels began to multiply, each with different subtopics. Problems compiling the code? Go to channel X. Problems with the firewall? Check out channel Y. There were more than 80 different communication channels and you had to be up to date with everything that happened in all of them, and still do your job. In my team we decided to hire 3 people who would rotate shifts so that they were aware of all the channels and making summaries of everything. The communication was very complicated, especially since there were so many people all over the world in different time zones participating in these discussions. By the time we resumed one topic, another group from another time zone would start adding their inputs, thoughts and conclusions. Worldwide group calls with all the teams grew in both length and frequency, leading many of us to sacrifice more and more sleep. The technology was also evolving at this rapid pace. The ecosystem was a desert when we started. We built our own tools because none existed. We created tools for validating initial balances, to launch protocols and to coordinate that launch. [We wrote our own documentation manuals](https://eosio.stackexchange.com/https://eosio.stackexchange.com/) and there were no graphical user interfaces. We also had to find u[sers with at least 15% of the total funds to interact with the network and to approve the launch](https://steemit.com/eos/@stuardo/eosio-voting-elections-are-just-around-the-corner-and-we-don-t-have-voting-booths). [We had to build those graphical interfaces](https://github.com/EOSPortal). It was a desert; a no-man’s land; an unexplored frontier. We were the first. Everything we built, we then improved it. Any protocol or program could be totally obsolete a week after it was created, because there were so many people building at the same time. Everything was evolving very fast.
![EOS Canada, built eos-bios](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2400/0*LwIO8b7WPv-OAxPK.jpg) *EOS Canada, built eos-bios*
In terms of conversations in the ecosystem, you had to be up to date. If you did not know that a certain application was already in disuse, you were out of the conversation. And maybe it had just been created! From day one, [eos-bios was the tool we used to do the start-up tests](https://www.eoscanada.com/en/tools/eos-bios), and after many tests, it was decided that it would no longer be used. I already had the necessary practice to be able to use it at any time, I had already read the code and understood everything internally. I felt I had my whole life using that tool, but it had not been more than 4 weeks. Time is relative.
![EOS "wallets"](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/0*YauveQDymOf3wqwO.jpg) *EOS "wallets"*
The development speed of EOS has not stopped, nor has it slowed down. On the contrary, complete blockchains have been reduced to one more app within the EOS blockchain. Before, specialized apps called “wallets” were used to manage your account balances. Now the apps that interact with EOS are “apps stores” where you can see all the apps for EOS, organized by categories. Managing the balance of your account is just another functionality in the app. To keep calling them “wallets” would be like calling smart phones “calculators”. Problems that had not been solved before, such as Inter Blockchain Communication, now have multiple proposals on how to be solved. Things like kitties on a blockchain or passing around a torch used to be newsworthy items, showcasing the power of other blockchains. These days, they are used as beginner tutorials for those starting to build on EOS. The development speed is impressive because it’s not a competition, it’s a common vision. The development speed IS the time machine. The DPoS consensus system rewards those who invest in the development of that time machine, not those who spend money on video cards and burn electricity. [We are a few months away from the one-year anniversary of the EOS Mainnet launch and it already feels like it was decades ago](https://block.one/june1/). Hold on tight because things are only going to accelerate from here!

titleBuilding a time machine.
bodyMy name is Stuardo Rodríguez and I am a software developer. I am one of the survivors of the cataclysm known as Y2K and I am building a time machine. If I get you to read this message, it means that I am succeeding. For those who don’t know about the prophecy of the Y2K, it said that computers would stop working at the end of the year 1999 according to the Gregorian calendar. At that time, computers used 2 digits to store dates. The end of the year 99 would start the year 00. All banking systems would crash when they can not calculate the payment dates. Credit cards would stop working. Even nuclear missiles could fire automatically that day. The worst was expected! I live in a country where religion and the government keep us living in the obscurantism or the inquisition. The nation’s budget was given in its entirety as an offering to foreign shamans who promised to save the government’s computer systems. System consulting firms became millionaires overnight to save us from that certain death. The religious in the corners sold repentance tickets as Queen concert tickets. The end of time would be about to arrive. Thank you for sacrificing all the virgins that any foreign shaman demanded as an offering! Absolutely nothing happened. We survived! Fast forwarding the story about 15 years in the future, a great friend invited me to know the world of Bitcoin. “Internet money, coins in your computer… magic words that you have to memorize to get the money mined.” Nothing he said made sense to me, even though I develop software for living. I completely ignored him. The next year, Bitcoin skyrocketed, he retired before his 40th birthday, and I looked like an idiot asking him to explain me how to put video cards in the refrigerator. It was too late for me, but not late for my curiosity. This time I would try to understand the technology behind it. And when you see it, the awakening is impressive. Now I understand so much of what he shared with me but could not see. Now I am one of the crazy preachers in the corners, shouting at passersby about the blockchain word, making them uncomfortable with my monologues. Living in obscurantism, some things stick to you. I have given lectures, I have been invited by different universities of the country to give talks to university and postgraduate students. I have been invited to give talks for bankers, financiers, investors. I have done everything except succeed in changing the world. Maybe I’m setting myself a very high goal, or maybe it’s because people lost 90% of their investments. I do not know. But what I was sure of was that by doing the same in all the presentations on Blockchain, I was not going to get it. I decided to change my focus. Using Bitcoin as a [value storage system](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/storeofvalue.asp) is killing blockchain adoption. Let me repeat it to highlight the importance of those words. **Using Bitcoin as a value storage system is killing blockchain adoption.** It’s an unpopular idea that makes the maximalists look at me as the enemy. In the prophecy that was revealed to me, I saw people paying with money in blockchain, things as simple as a Pepsi in a store. Not hoarding, but really using it. How do I make people see the future that I saw? The only thing that occurred to me was to bring the future to the present and give people a taste of what it looks like. I organized an event for people who did not know anything about Bitcoin. Not suitable for investors! My target audience was young people, students, small business entrepreneurs. Common people! Not national bank managers, or congressmen who say they will change laws for the use of blockchain, but do nothing. People who could see the world change, and be part of that change. There were 2 talks. The first: I got a [professor of a blockchain course](https://www.linkedin.com/in/luisfernandogramajo/) at one of the [most prestigious universities in my country](https://www.linkedin.com/school/universidad-francisco-marroquin-guatemala/) to give a master class in a hall in a shopping center. I asked him to simplify many things so that my grandmother could understand. He was very impressed by the amount of questions the audience was asking. If people ask is because they understood and are interested. If nobody asks anything, it’s because nobody understood anything.
![](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/8320/1*g-7_KtleNB0BW3Kc7iCpig.jpeg)
The second talk: my experiment. I wanted people to see what a world would be like where they could buy food and drinks in a shopping center paying with money in blockchain. I asked the audience: “who got bored with the theory and wants to see this in real life?” Everyone raised their hands. Next to me there was a saleswoman with her phone in one hand and a beer ready to deliver in the other. I pressed a button to see my phone in the projector, I asked the seller the name of her EOS account, I asked the price of the beer, EOS 0.74, I [made the transfer](https://bloks.io/transaction/814e922d89afec70973833f64ed3f086ff10fa1f1a89bd4a63dd9ff70cf7369e), she confirmed to receive it in a couple of seconds and he gave me my beer. “Ladies and gentlemen, that was blockchain. Thank you very much for attending this presentation. Any questions?”.
![](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2560/1*Md4bhZwFhLXsGtRLhpauNw.jpeg)
The following was an hour and a half of questions from the audience. One thing was the theory, and another to see it live. While people were asking questions, I showed them a video on screen [how to download the app for their phone and create their account](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC8x5N6lgp4); another person was there [receiving cash or credit card payments to buy EOS](https://bloks.io/account/ovallesergio), and then they would buy buffalo wings and beer paying with EOS. While people were buying their food, we continued with questions from the public. We managed to create 28 new EOS accounts. We received Q1,300 (currency of my country), approximately USD $ 147. We sold EOS 49.0025 to the public, of which [EOS 22 was sold in food and beers](https://bloks.io/account/lceventosacm). That for me, was much more successful for the adoption of blockchain than all the previous talks I’ve done.
![](https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*OUiBheeD7rcUXmIwJauGCg.png)
*“Whenever I listened to, like Bitcoin and stuff, I thought it was something they use in Europe or in China, where they are technologically more advanced, but being able to try it and use it in a day-to-day purchase made me understand it well. It was like a scene from a movie of the future”*, was what one of the assistants told me. *“¿Like from the Jetsons?”* I asked, but she saw me with a face, making me understand that she did not understand the reference. Maybe I’m too old. Maybe generations that lived before the Y2K are still afraid of a 2nd Apocalypse, the one that could really destroy the economy if we trust computers too much. Maybe generations that don’t even know what the Y2K was are the ones that are going to be using blockchain daily instead of hoarding it. Maybe I’m too old to try to change the world, but I feel that I’m creating this machine that helps me travel through time, by bring the future to the present. To live now how the future is going to be, because that’s how it’s going to be. If I get you to read this message, it means that I am succeeding.\n\nFor those who don’t know about the prophecy of the Y2K, it said that computers would stop working at the end of the year 1999 according to the Gregorian calendar. At that time, computers used 2 digits to store dates. The end of the year 99 would start the year 00. All banking systems would crash when they can not calculate the payment dates. Credit cards would stop working. Even nuclear missiles could fire automatically that day. The worst was expected!\n\nI live in a country where religion and the government keep us living in the obscurantism or the inquisition. We survived!\n\nFast forwarding the story about 15 years in the future, a great friend invited me to know the world of Bitcoin. “Internet money, coins in your computer… magic words that you have to memorize to get the money mined.” Nothing he said made sense to me, even though I develop software for living.
