| body | **Oriaginal Article: https://ckbweekly.substack.com/p/nfts-on-ckb** We all know that NFT's have lots of use cases, from in-game items to crypto art, and a long tail of all sorts of records that can be committed to a blockchain: like badges, ticket sales or real estate deeds. These use cases have a mainstream appeal and we are excited that they are starting to be built on Nervos. During a recent hackathon, a team built an NFT marketplace called Pictosis that takes advantage of some of the unique features of Nervos to improve on the status quo of NFTs today. To demonstrate: with open transactions, NFT's can be added to a marketplace (and ready for sale) with only a creator-signed transaction being sent to the NFT marketplace. Later a buyer can publish this information on-chain paired with their payment for the NFT. Current NFT creators will see that this resolves UX issues that stem from the current requirement to wait for transaction confirmation and pay for gas before an NFT can be put up for sale. Additionally, because Nervos is built for Layer 2, we are also looking forward to what Layer 2 innovations the Nervos community can bring to the NFT space, to further improve costs and the industry's ability to scale to serve new NFT users. Check out the podcast with Jordan Mack to hear more about what happens on the Nervos hackathon! Sparklings Check out this article laying out a design for Layer 2 DEX (decentralized exchange) built on Nervos. A design for toCKB, a cross-chain bridge to Bitcoin and Ethereum was posted to Nervos Talk. The first public Nervos town hall was announced, tune in on Sept 14 at 10pm EST to hear more about the project status and roadmap updates from architect and researcher Jan Xie. Technical Updates RFCs Nervos applies the RFC (Request for Comments) process for implementing every building block of the protocol. There were 27 Previous RFCs that can be found here . | body | We’re pleased to officially announce our plans to support the Mimblewimble protocol on Nervos. Mimblewimble is a technology that will enable Nervos users to transact privately using CKB or any other Nervos-supported tokens without revealing the participants and amounts of the exchange. The origins of Mimblewimble Mimblewimble was created in 2016 by anonymous individuals using pseudonyms taken from the popular Harry Potter fictional universe. The technology they released was nothing short of a breakthrough in cryptocurrency privacy. A following quickly assembled, leading to the formation of the community-driven project known as Grin. Grin has proven itself as one of the most successful community-driven projects based around privacy technology and has continued to advance the Mimblewimble protocol. In recognition of the project’s efforts we have made a donation of 10 BTC to the Grin General Fund to help continue the advancement of the Grin platform and Mimblewimble protocol. The future of Nervos and Mimblewimble The integration of Mimblewimble will give users the ability to transact privately on Nervos, but it also opens the door for future offerings built on the technology. The Nervos core development team and the Grin community will continue driving forward the technology and investigate the possibilities of cross-chain connectivity between Grin and Nervos. In the coming months, we will continue down a three-phase development plan: Phase 1: Schema Design (~2 months) — Prepare a general schema for the operating model. Phase 2: Technical Specification (~2 months) — Produce a detailed technical specification. Phase 3: Implementation (3+ months) — Construct the codebase which will power the platform. Phase 1 is currently in effect and multiple community members have already begun exchanging knowledge to make this effort a reality. Anyone who wishes to contribute to the effort is encouraged to join the @grincoin#mw_nervos channel on Keybase. This public channel will serve as the main conduit of communication between our two communities. Through the Nervos Foundation, we are also setting aside a grant fund specifically for infrastructure and interoperability solutions between Grin and Nervos. All developer teams and community members with interest are encouraged to apply here! Both of our communities are excited about the advancement of Mimblewimble technology. Anyone who wishes to voice their opinions or keep up to date with the latest developments is encouraged to follow us on Medium and Twitter or join the discussions on Discord and Telegram! To stay updated on our collaboration with Mimblewimble and more: Join our community: Discord — Github — Nervos Talk Forum — Twitter For discussions or questions join the conversation on Discord or check out one of our community Telegram channels: English, Korean, Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese |

| body | Hello, welcome to issue #13 of the CKB Weekly, a newsletter about the Nervos Common Knowledge Base blockchain and related technology. No one could probably argue against the importance of privacy in financial transactions. The developers that value privacy above all other features built protocols that support it natively. Privacy coins like Zcash, Monero and Grin make various trade-offs between functionality and usability to ensure that privacy is a core value proposition of the underlying blockchains. However, is privacy a feature of valuable cryptocurrencies, or a product itself? An essay written in 2019 by Multicoin’s Ryan Gentry and Matt Shapiro argues that “the most valuable blockchains will win out over a range of different technology trade-offs, and that users and businesses will find novel ways to bring privacy to these networks, rather than allowing network participants to choose native privacy protocols for which they take balance sheet risk.” Let’s take a look at how different blockchains achieve privacy in transactions: (both Dandelion and Kovri are IP-obscuring tools) Four types of private information can be leaked in a cryptocurrency transaction: the sender, the receiver, the amount of the transaction and the IP address. Complete privacy can be achieved in a transaction if all the four types of information can be successfully hidden from any third-party observer. General platforms like Bitcoin and Ethereum (which prioritized solving issues such as scaling and user experience first) already offer sufficient privacy guarantees - the transactions can be obscured with the help from coin mixers - enough for most users to never need niche privacy-focused blockchains. The coin mixer falls into the great hidden design idea of making it difficult for an observer to identify the actual sender, receiver, or specific amount of money by hiding the transaction in a large number of similar transactions. The more transactions that follow the same rules, the more participants there are, and the harder it is for the observer to identify them. The transactions on Bitcoin and Ethereum can be obscured with coin mixers, which for examples are CoinJoin on BTC, Hopper, Heiswap, Tornado and Aztec Protocol on Ethereum. Privacy is a switchable feature on CKB CKB follows the tradition of Bitcoin, with the priority to create a native asset that can store value based on security, decentralization and longevity, while privacy is an add-on feature. This combination of MimbleWimble and Drago (a decentralized coin-mixer) offers a new experience. MimbleWimble will be implemented as a smart contract-like presence on CKB. The users can use Drago to hide one transaction among others, and attach the MimbleWimble type script to the output asset, then they will be able to enjoy the functionality of private transactions. When users need to opt out of the privacy feature, they can simply un-reference the MimbleWimble contract and revert to their current normal trading on CKB. Privacy can be implemented as a switchable feature on CKB for its native assets and user defined tokens. | body | China’s high-level involvement in blockchain is no longer hidden by now. The Asian giant is forging ahead with its exploration of the various opportunities the emerging technology - like 5G, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things - have to offer. From the Chinese president’s somewhat endorsement of the technology in October 2019 to the eventual launch of the Blockchain Service Network (BSN) as a platform to ease development burden, the general consensus out there is that China is leading globally when it comes to blockchain technology. Led by the State Information Center, the national blockchain platform seeks to build a global commercial infrastructure network to help companies produce all kinds of blockchain applications faster and cheaper. This government’s presumed friendliness, which on its own has petered the uncertainty that usually surrounds policies that are related to blockchain and crypto activities in China in the recent past, has so far gone a long way to entrench projects to unleash innovation in the space. It has helped deepen projects’ roots in China to rise above operational constraints and aim for adoption in a highly competitive and diluted global market. These China-originated projects (e.g. NEO, Ontology etc) are looking to take advantage of the seemingly slow pace of blockchain adoption in the West - mainly as a result of the U.S.’ hesitation to adopt technology developed in China - as a headstart ahead of others to spread globally including across South America. From Huawei - a BSN member which had partnered with Shenzhen authorities to accelerate blockchain adoption in the city and launched its Blockchain-as-a-Service solution in May - to Tencent’s blockchain e-invoicing and Alibaba’s traceability blockchain system, top Asian tech giants have now been showing interest in the technology. They have rolled out initiatives that support the grand objective set out by President Xi Jinpin when he stressed the importance of blockchain and the need to accelerate its development in China in a wide range of sectors to some of the Chinese Communist Party’s most senior members. Lesser known projects are catching up with the trend too, introducing new products and infrastructures built on blockchain to explore the generational impact of the technology especially in the wake of the rising embrace of decentralized finance (DeFi) services - a sector that has seen a rapid growth in various financial services offered through decentralized applications in the past year majorly between the U.S. and China with less related activities from Europe. With the regulatory uncertainty surrounding blockchain in the U.S. presently which has been a setback for many projects in the country, China and Chinese projects seem to be riding high in their exploration of its potential even as enterprise use continues to be a key focus for blockchain in China and, to a very large extent, Asia. While the Chinese government may not go for decentralized public chains, the development is a plus for embracing blockchain technology in China and a positive for the sector as it could largely benefit several sectors particularly key localized layer 1 public blockchains in China in the long-term. Layer 1 blockchains target large pools of developers to offer them protocols that are global, decentralized, secure and neutral as possible. As is obtainable in other regions, public chains are building their developer communities in China though localization still plays an important role for success. Hence, localization competition is a very important strategy in China with key factors such as a project’s standing with the government, decentralization (since permissioned chains could just use the BSN) and its developer ecosystem being of utmost consideration. According to GitHub’s data spanning all unique commits across all branches and repositories for these public chains, Nervos, Tron and NEO have dominated the group’s developer activity from 2019 (as at March 2020) leaving other top players like Qtum, VeChain and Ontology behind. The data compilation from the Layer 1 blockchain’s localization Strategy in China , done by a research and consulting firm that is focused on the digital asset market, Delphi Digital, shows from the Github commit activity across all repos for these projects over the past year that Nervos has the most developer activity followed by Tron and Qtum. As a new layer 1 sustainable token economic system that differentiates itself from the rest through its belief that a layered approach is the right way to build a blockchain network, Nervos Common Knowledge Base (CKB) believes the current crypto-economic models for layer 1 protocols - primarily focused on incentives and punishments to ensure network consensus while native tokens are used mostly to pay transaction fees or to satisfy staking requirements that provide Sybil resistance - could be better. It is based on the view that a layered approach is the right way to construct a system instead of building an all-encompassing single layer. That is, to decouple concerns and address them at different layers to enable the layer 1 blockchain focus on being secure, neutral, decentralized and open public infrastructure while smaller layer 2 networks can be specially-designed to best suit the context of their usage. The Nervos CKB is the first layer 1 blockchain built specifically to support layer 2 protocols. It hopes to achieve this complementary role by focusing on security and decentralization instead of overlapping layer 2 priorities such as scalability. It is a Bitcoin-inspired value preservation layer of the entire Nervos network that is open and public, and proof of work-based blockchain designed to be maximally secure and censorship-resistant as a decentralized custodian of value and crypto-assets. In short, the CKB aims to be the infrastructure to store the world's most valuable common knowledge, with the best-in-class layer 2 ecosystem providing the most scalable and efficient blockchain transactions. With localization in China being a crucial factor that has hindered Western companies from thriving in the Asian country due to a limited market, culture and competition understanding of them thus imposing a global structure rather than a China-focused division, Nervos CKB stands out from a number of layer 1 blockchains competing to attract developer interest as not likely to be caught in this web. It is well-grounded in China hosting plenty of meetups and community leads with documentation in the native language to drive the domestic developer ecosystem; backed by $30m grants program and sustainable DAO to fund the projects in ecosystem; and an issue-free relationship with Chinese regulations thus being able to grow to even partner with one of China’s largest banks, China Merchants Bank International. The Asia/Pacific region accounts for 46% of the world’s traditional developers, who can code in their traditional programming languages with Nervos and lead to more unique applications being built. Unlike Western based projects which face the aforementioned barriers that hinder their fostering a developer community in China, Nervos may be better positioned to grow a developer community in China for its home advantages - presence in China, developer tools in the native language, ample funding and community engagement - even in the face of Ethereum’s global lead. It stands a better chance of being adopted by more users over time even as the growing importance of public blockchain infrastructures has seemingly become glaring to policymakers and central banks. They have somewhat realised that payment settlement processes are too slow, costly, and inefficient hence growing talks of digital currencies e.g. after Facebook’s Libra Project announcement, the European Central Bank has set up a cryptocurrency task force to follow the People's Bank of China’s digital yuan initiative. Policy support will see more companies enter the blockchain space and make more attempts to evolve with the technology. Fostering a community from within China - with its 1.4 billion population - to launch and develop an international presence seems a plausible strategy, too, for an ideal layer 1 blockchain that makes no compromises on security, decentralization and sustainability. One of the benefits of a layered architecture is the fundamental layer can be kept neutral, while allowing the upper layers to customize for different regulation conditions in different countries and regions. In China the majority of blockchain applications are built on permissioned/consortium blockchains for regulation reasons. |

They have rolled out initiatives that support the grand objective set out by President Xi Jinpin when he stressed the importance of blockchain and the need to accelerate its development in China in a wide range of sectors to some of the Chinese Communist Party’s most senior members.\n\n\nLesser known projects are catching up with the trend too, introducing new products and infrastructures built on blockchain to explore the generational impact of the technology especially in the wake of the rising embrace of decentralized finance (DeFi) services - a sector that has seen a rapid growth in various financial services offered through decentralized applications in the past year majorly between the U.S. and China with less related activities from Europe.\n\n\nWith the regulatory uncertainty surrounding blockchain in the U.S. presently which has been a setback for many projects in the country, China and Chinese projects seem to be riding high in their exploration of its potential even as enterprise use continues to be a key focus for blockchain in China and, to a very large extent, Asia. \n\n\nWhile the Chinese government may not go for decentralized public chains, the development is a plus for embracing blockchain technology in China and a positive for the sector as it could largely benefit several sectors particularly key localized layer 1 public blockchains in China in the long-term.\n\n\nLayer 1 blockchains target large pools of developers to offer them protocols that are global, decentralized, secure and neutral as possible. As is obtainable in other regions, public chains are building their developer communities in China though localization still plays an important role for success. \n\n\nHence, localization competition is a very important strategy in China with key factors such as a project’s standing with the government, decentralization (since permissioned chains could just use the BSN) and its developer ecosystem being of utmost consideration.\n\n\nAccording to GitHub’s data spanning all unique commits across all branches and repositories for these public chains, Nervos, Tron and NEO have dominated the group’s developer activity from 2019 (as at March 2020) leaving other top players like Qtum, VeChain and Ontology behind. \nThe data compilation from the Layer 1 blockchain’s localization Strategy in China , done by a research and consulting firm that is focused on the digital asset market, Delphi Digital, shows from the Github commit activity across all repos for these projects over the past year that Nervos has the most developer activity followed by Tron and Qtum.\n\n\nAs a new layer 1 sustainable token economic system that differentiates itself from the rest through its belief that a layered approach is the right way to build a blockchain network, Nervos Common Knowledge Base (CKB) believes the current crypto-economic models for layer 1 protocols - primarily focused on incentives and punishments to ensure network consensus while native tokens are used mostly to pay transaction fees or to satisfy staking requirements that provide Sybil resistance - could be better.\n\n\nIt is based on the view that a layered approach is the right way to construct a system instead of building an all-encompassing single layer. That is, to decouple concerns and address them at different layers to enable the layer 1 blockchain focus on being secure, neutral, decentralized and open public infrastructure while smaller layer 2 networks can be specially-designed to best suit the context of their usage.\n\n\nThe Nervos CKB is the first layer 1 blockchain built specifically to support layer 2 protocols. It hopes to achieve this complementary role by focusing on security and decentralization instead of overlapping layer 2 priorities such as scalability.\n\n\nIt is a Bitcoin-inspired value preservation layer of the entire Nervos network that is open and public, and proof of work-based blockchain designed to be maximally secure and censorship-resistant as a decentralized custodian of value and crypto-assets. \n\n\nIn short, the CKB aims to be the infrastructure to store the world's most valuable common knowledge, with the best-in-class layer 2 ecosystem providing the most scalable and efficient blockchain transactions.\n\n\nWith localization in China being a crucial factor that has hindered Western companies from thriving in the Asian country due to a limited market, culture and competition understanding of them thus imposing a global structure rather than a China-focused division, Nervos CKB stands out from a number of layer 1 blockchains competing to attract developer interest as not likely to be caught in this web. \n\n\nIt is well-grounded in China hosting plenty of meetups and community leads with documentation in the native language to drive the domestic developer ecosystem; backed by $30m grants program and sustainable DAO to fund the projects in ecosystem; and an issue-free relationship with Chinese regulations thus being able to grow to even partner with one of China’s largest banks, China Merchants Bank International. \n\n\nThe Asia/Pacific region accounts for 46% of the world’s traditional developers, who can code in their traditional programming languages with Nervos and lead to more unique applications being built. \n\n\nUnlike Western based projects which face the aforementioned barriers that hinder their fostering a developer community in China, Nervos may be better positioned to grow a developer community in China for its home advantages - presence in China, developer tools in the native language, ample funding and community engagement - even in the face of Ethereum’s global lead. \n\n\nIt stands a better chance of being adopted by more users over time even as the growing importance of public blockchain infrastructures has seemingly become glaring to policymakers and central banks. \n\n\nPolicy support will see more companies enter the blockchain space and make more attempts to evolve with the technology. Fostering a community from within China - with its 1.4 billion population - to launch and develop an international presence seems a plausible strategy, too, for an ideal layer 1 blockchain that makes no compromises on security, decentralization and sustainability. \n\n\nOne of the benefits of a layered architecture is the fundamental layer can be kept neutral, while allowing the upper layers to customize for different regulation conditions in different countries and regions. In China the majority of blockchain applications are built on permissioned/consortium blockchains for regulation reasons.",

| body | Hello, welcome to issue #11 of the CKB Weekly, a newsletter about the Nervos Common Knowledge Base blockchain and related technology. Recently we have seen several new smart contract languages: Libra releases Move Language; Algorand and Blockstack say to develop Smart Contracts Language Clarity; Bitcoin Core Developer Jeremy Rubin Is Developing New Smart Contracts for Bitcoin Language Sapio. It is true that the current mainstream programming languages may not meet some of the technically specific needs of building applications on blockchains. However, if we want to attract more developers to program on blockchains, maybe we should not add additional hurdles for them. It may be a breeze for some advanced programmers to learn a new programming language, but with the tide of trying to learn and master a programming language, it's how being on the side of the majority and being tried by more people makes the blockchain get more adoption. According to a report by Stack Overflow, the top 3 most popular languages are: Javascript, Python, Java. The top three most loved languages are: Rust, TypeScript, Python. For new developers interested in blockchain, it will be a blessing to develop blockchain applications and smart contracts using popular programming languages like Python and Javascript. Currently you'll be able to develop in Javascript on CKB, and the fast-growing and beloved Rust Lang (Rust in Blockchain) is also a development that CKB pushes. Sparklings Nervos Python SDK proposal from the development team at the University of Waterloo. We hope that by lowering the barrier to entry into the mainstream development world in this way, Nervos will quickly embrace the More traditional developers. Media CKB, Version Control and Blockchain Evolution by a Linus fan. Building a better user experience on blockchains through cryptography Nervos Nation podcast by Jonathan Caras and Michael Hasson (New!) Technical Updates RFCs Nervos applies the RFC (Request for Comments) process for implementing every building block of the protocol. There were 24 Previous RFCs that can be found here. If you are curious about why a design in CKB is what it is now, please post your questions in this repository. Core CKB Released v0.33.1. CKB v0.33.1 has been released to address the issue of GHSA-r9rv-9mh8-pxf4. We observed a surge of uncle rate on July 1st. It in turn increased the block interval. From a consensus algorithm’s perspective, a large block interval should lower the uncle rate. However, it did not work. The root cause was that a miner did not synchronize the local time, which was about 15 seconds ahead, and there was a bug in the code that would ban peers which relay the block more than 15 seconds in the future. Thus that miner was banned by most peers and could not catch up with the network’s latest block and continuously produced uncle blocks. We received some complaints that the ckb node consumes too much memory. Xuejie met a similar issue when he tried to port ckb into ARM and ran ckb on his Raspberry Pi which only has 1G memory. So Boyu has started a series of work to confine the memory usage of CKB. He has already achieved some progress, such as not caching all headers in memory during header sync. Chao had submitted a PR to schedule block download tasks between peers according to the history latency statistics. We are running more simulation tests to find better parameters. Chao also finished the first version of Tentacle Go. Implementing the framework in another language taught Chao a lot and he started reflecting and refactoring the Rust version. There are more and more requirements to use ckb as a library. So Quake had made various refactoring to make ckb more friendly to be used this way. We know that our RPC error messages are not ideal. Ian recently submitted three PRs to improve the RPC error messages. | body | Hello, welcome to issue #10 of the CKB Weekly, a newsletter about the Nervos Common Knowledge Base blockchain and related technology. Sparklings • LeapDAO received grants to build an EVM-compatible sidechain framework for Nervos. With this, developers can utilize existing Ethereum contracts and toolings to build sidechain apps that leverage the security and flexibility of CKB. The clearest applications of this technology the LeapDAO team sees are for payments, DEXs, and gaming. • CKB dev Tannr presented “Smart Contracts in Rust on Nervos” at the Unitize online conference, providing hundreds of attendees an overview of programming on CKB and how to get started on a Rust contract for issuing user-defined tokens RFCs Nervos applies the RFC (Request for Comments) process for implementing every building block of the protocol. There were 24 Previous RFCs that can be found here. • This week we have a new RFC Swappable Signature Verification Protocol Spec - it tries to address this problem: by defining a common interface for signature verification algorithms, we shall be able to decouple a signature verification library, from a typical lock script. When executing, the lock script can first load the signature verification library via dynamic linking, then calls functions provided by the library to perform the actual signature verification path. Media • New CKB Wiki for layperson, and the new documentation site for developers. • Ledger Support update from Obsidian Systems Technical Updates Core • CKB o Released CKB v0.33.1. o Improved chain sync performance. (#2067, #2081) o Added a new sub-command replay to verify the local chain (#2045) o Fixed a vulnerability that ckb process crashes on invalid input. (GHSA-pr39–8257-fxc2) o Added document to explain different protocol handles in tentacle. (ProtocolHandle) o Supported updating log levels dynamically via RPC (#2113) o Added RPC truncate to ease testing and development (#2064) o Removed RPC estimate_fee_rate for performance issue (#2126) o BlockTimeTooNew should not be considered as invalid block(GHSA-r9rv-9mh8-pxf4) If you are curious about why a design in CKB is what it is now, please post your questions in this repository. • Dev Tools o Lumos [JavaScript/TypeScript based dapp framework] • released v0.4.8 o Polyjuice [an Ethereum on CKB solution] o Capsule [development framework for creating smart contract scripts in Rust for CKB] • Neuron o released v0.32.0-beta.1 • CKB Explorer o remove method tracer require (#679) o statistic info api (#675) o update dao compensation on address (#677) Layer 2 • Muta [layer2 framework on CKB] o released v0.2.2 o upgrade tentacle to v0.3.0alpha5 (#339) o trust metric integration tests (#340) o change verified map to array (#337) • SECBIT Labs [Zero knowledge proof toolkit for CKB] o ready to have a milestone1 call on July, 10 (zoom link) Ecosystem • Lay2 [pw-sdk, build dApp on CKB and run them everywhere] o auditing in progress for the mainnet version. o Check out this video showing how pw-sdk enable using Nervos Dao in Opera (and any other ethereum wallets) • Obsidian Labs[developer IDE] o Released CKB Studio v0.06 o now providing CKB node RPC and ckb-indexer for Aggron testnet and Lina mainnet. You don't need to run a local node for testnet and mainnet, which can save a lot of time for synchronization. • Synapse [browser wallet and keyper agency] o Released Synapse Extension v0.0.9 • BlockABC [onchain CKB and web auth] • GrowFi [token swap functionality] • Obsidian Systems [CKB integration with ledger wallets] o Nervos Ledger App: Status Update #2 • Done: Storage of Hardware Wallet Root Public Keys in CKB-CLI • Done: Pass Hardware Wallets Unhashed Transaction and Context Data • In Progress: List Multiple Connected Ledger Devices • In Progress: Message Signing • In Progress: Multisig Lock Script Support / Transaction Variants o How to use Multisigs with CKB-CLI • Summa One [BTC/CKB interoperability] - github • (new!) | body | Hello, welcome to issue #9 of the CKB Weekly, a newsletter about the Nervos Common Knowledge Base blockchain and related technology. Someone once told me hey the project seems cool but it’s painful to develop on the half-baked CKB with premature toolings. Today we are glad to see three new dev tools and new document site came out for rescue :) **Sparkling [Tools]** Boost your productivity in building CKB dApps as well as inspire new directions only possible with Nervos CKB. **Polyjuice** Nervos CKB is built on the cell model, which is a generalized version of the UTXO model. There seems to be a belief in the blockchain world that the UTXO model is hard to program on, while the account model is easier for developers. Polyjuice is an Ethereum compatible layer on top of Nervos CKB. Ethereum, up to this day, is probably the most used and flexible account model based blockchain. With Polyjuice, it is perfectly possible to use the account model on Nervos CKB. The flexibility here actually enables countless opportunities. What’s more interesting, Polyjuice, as the name [Polyjuice Portion] indicates, is not an account layer that is tailored just to Ethereum; with the extracted core account layer , devs are free to integrate any account layer, e.g. Libra’s exact programming model might also be ported over to CKB, enabling a very fruitful ecosystem. **Lumos** Lumos is a full featured JavaScript/TypeScript based dapp framework aiming to simplify the process of building apps on CKB . The name [Lumos Maxima] explains what it is about: the wonderland of CKB, though vast and fertile, still remains dark in most of the parts, Lumos tries to shed light upon the land, guiding people into this beautiful new world. As of now, Lumos contains the following components: indexer: a CKB cell indexer that fulfills Index-Query-Assemble pattern. For now, this package only contains RocksDB backed indexer. A separate package contains SQL backed indexer using the same interface. Later, we might merge the 2 packages into one for consistency. base: a base package containing common types and utilities that are used by most packages. If there is a CKB specific task you need to perform, you might want to look here first. Chances are they are already provided. helpers: a helper package containing more utilities. The difference between helpers and base, is that base contains pure stateless functions, while helpers works in a more intrinsic way: it requires config-manager mentioned below to be setup. common-scripts: integrations for known scripts on CKB. While we try our best to provide integrations for popular CKB scripts, people might be working on innovations everyday. As a result, we are also designing a set of APIs, so developers can freely integrate their own scripts into Lumos for everyone to use. Once integrated, common-scripts should be able to leverage those new scripts as well. config-manager: a manager for dealing with differences between different chains, such as mainnet, testnet, or numerous dev chains. We abstract each chain into individual config file. Once loaded, config manager will be able to handle the chain specific logic, so you don't have to deal with this in your own code. transaction-manager: a transaction manager for CKB. One problem with UTXO based blockchains, is that a certain amount of gap period exists between a transaction is accepted by a blockchain, and when it is actually committed on chain. During this gap, new cells created by the pending transaction will not be available. Transaction manager package takes care of this. It wraps an indexer instance, and makes sure cells created in pending transactions, are also exposed and available for assembling new transactions. This means you are no longer bounded to one transaction at a time, you can freely send series of transactions as you wish. **Capsule** Capsule is a development framework for creating smart contract scripts in Rust for CKB. Rust is a language designed to empower everyone to build reliable and efficient software. The battle-tested type system and ownership model, healthy community inventing new things every day, together with the wide usage across the blockchain industry, all make Rust a perfect general-purpose language for building scripts on CKB. Capsule wraps around Rust tooling and provides a seamless experience for building Rust based scripts for Nervos CKB. Capsule aims to steward the full lifecycle of a CKB script. It helps you develop, build, test, debug, and also deploy the script. Just like what the name [Hoi-Poi Capsules] hints at, Capsule packs a very big universe in an extremely small form factor. We do envision a world where Capsule is all one needs to go from zero to a running and successful script on CKB mainnet. Capsule provides the following functionality: Scaffolding for new projects. Building of RISC-V binaries for CKB-VM. Local execution of smart contract scripts via Docker. Automated testing of smart contract scripts. Configurable deployment of scripts to CKB. Generation of simulated transaction data for debugging. "body": "Hello, welcome to issue #9 of the CKB Weekly, a newsletter about the Nervos Common Knowledge Base blockchain and related technology. \n\nSomeone once told me hey the project seems cool but it’s painful to develop on the half-baked CKB with premature toolings.\n\nToday we are glad to see three new dev tools and new document site came out for rescue :)\n\n**Sparkling [Tools]**\n\n Boost your productivity in building CKB dApps as well as inspire new directions only possible with Nervos CKB.\n\n**Polyjuice**\n\nNervos CKB is built on the cell model, which is a generalized version of the UTXO model. There seems to be a belief in the blockchain world that the UTXO model is hard to program on, while the account model is easier for developers. \n\nPolyjuice is an Ethereum compatible layer on top of Nervos CKB. Ethereum, up to this day, is probably the most used and flexible account model based blockchain. With Polyjuice, it is perfectly possible to use the account model on Nervos CKB. The flexibility here actually enables countless opportunities.\n\nWhat’s more interesting, Polyjuice, as the name [Polyjuice Portion] indicates, is not an account layer that is tailored just to Ethereum; with the extracted core account layer , devs are free to integrate any account layer, e.g. Libra’s exact programming model might also be ported over to CKB, enabling a very fruitful ecosystem.\n\n**Lumos**\n\nLumos is a full featured JavaScript/TypeScript based dapp framework aiming to simplify the process of building apps on CKB . The name [Lumos Maxima] explains what it is about: the wonderland of CKB, though vast and fertile, still remains dark in most of the parts, Lumos tries to shed light upon the land, guiding people into this beautiful new world.\n\nAs of now, Lumos contains the following components:\n\n indexer: a CKB cell indexer that fulfills Index-Query-Assemble pattern. For now, this package only contains RocksDB backed indexer. A separate package contains SQL backed indexer using the same interface. Later, we might merge the 2 packages into one for consistency.\n\n base: a base package containing common types and utilities that are used by most packages. If there is a CKB specific task you need to perform, you might want to look here first. Chances are they are already provided.\n\n helpers: a helper package containing more utilities. | body | The Nervos blockchain (Common Knowledge Base, or CKB) is the base layer of the entire Nervos network. A good way to understand blockchain is to imagine a digital database that’s not connected to one computer (it’s distributed). Each sort of record in the database is called a block. People can only edit the part of the database (the blockchain) they have access to with a private key. Some databases are made to crunch numbers. Nervos’ blockchain is designed to verify and store “common knowledge” information. In a blockchain context, common knowledge information is verified by global consensus. **Nervos Represents The Next Wave Of Public Blockchains** Nervos’s CKB is designed to be an evolution from many previous public blockchains. While some blockchains do change and are upgraded, their general structure usually remains the same. This can be a problem for those with truly innovative or big projects who need a bit more flexibility. Flexibility is one of the key elements of the CKB. Cells in Nervos’s blockchain can be used to process information, send a message, or just store important knowledge. They also can’t be changed once created. **A System Design For The Future** This versatility means those who aren’t happy with a signature algorithm or hash function can build what they need. At its core, the CKB is designed for flexibility and sustainability. This is a big help as different networks grow and change. It also makes it much easier to insert new algorithms without a hard fork. A hard fork, in the blockchain world, is a radical change to an entire network that means everything has to upgrade. Obviously, this can be an intensive and large process – but that’s set to change with Nervos. The next level of Nervos (Layer 2) is where a lot of computation takes place. The CKB helps optimize the work done in this second layer by serving as a stable base. What’s the relationship between Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Nervos? The Nervos team intends for the CKB to fix some of the economic incentives for Bitcoin (like it’s capped supply), and to address Ethereum’s security risk since the token isn’t directly tied to the value of applications on the second level. **A Creation That’s Not Traditionally Engineered** The name Nervos comes from derivatives of the word nerve and cell, two important components of the body that work together. Overall, the Nervos blockchain is designed to let the entire network evolve based on the musing of Charles Darwin, who said “*the species that survives is the one that is able to **adapt** to and to **adjust** best to the changing environment*.” |

| body | The Nervos blockchain (Common Knowledge Base, or CKB) is the base layer of the entire Nervos network.
