| body | Seneca, On the Firmness of the Wise, 5.4: "But the wise person can lose nothing. Such a person has everything stored up for themselves, leaving nothing to Fortune, their own goods are held firm, bound in virtue, which requires nothing from chance, and therefore can't be either increased or diminished." Investing in oneself is probably one of the best returns on time you can get. There are many types of assets in the world today, money/cash, stocks, cryptocurrency, and land. Then you could spend your time improving you relationships with friends/family members. All these have certain positives, and I am not saying investing time in family or friends is not worth it, it is totally and should be a good portion of your life. But I think the most important asset is yourself, your health, and your mind. When I read blogs about investing, and personal investing I see many topics on where to save, how much to save for retirement, how much stock/bond mix you should have etc, but you rarely see investing in your health. Your health may be the number one contributor to your financial demise, and will be a demise in your actual relationships too! You should invest time in your health so that you can optimize your life and your savings! For instance, the more exercise you get, the less chance you will have diabetes or coronary artery disease. The less you smoke cigarettes, the less chance you will get a stroke. Not even counting the actual health issues, hospitalizations of this would cost good amount of money and affect our portfolio, but no one talks about focusing on optimizing this aspect of your life. Likewise, feeding your mind with good books, knowledge, and rest (sleep), is something that I do frequently when I feel I am in a standstill regarding my philosophy of life. When I feel like I am not making any progress, I go to iBooks and buy a good book and start reading, it is never a waste of time to learn new information, and no one can take that from me. So today work on your mind AND body, and I think it will help you keep progressing in this way of life! |

| body | Epictetus, Discourses, 3.23.30: "Men, the philosopher's lecture-hall is a hospital--you shouldn't walk out of it feeling pleasure, but pain, for you aren't well when you enter it." I work in a Hospital so this is an easy one for me to understand! Essentially stoic philosophy is saying that if you want to get to your objective (healing, learning stoicism, having a great family), you may have to go through some pains. It is saying that when you heal your body physically, you have to go through some pains, for instance in rehab after a major trauma/car accident. The hospital itself is painful, but afterwards if you do not get up and get your body moving, you can get hit with another major health condition (like a blood clot!) I think as you progress through the different actions to make yourself a better stoic, you have to understand some parts of it will be painful for you, but you have to go through it to fully get better at the way of living. |

Essentially stoic philosophy is saying that if you want to get to your objective (healing, learning stoicism, having a great family), you may have to go through some pains. It is saying that when you heal your body physically, you have to go through some pains, for instance in rehab after a major trauma/car accident. The hospital itself is painful, but afterwards if you do not get up and get your body moving, you can get hit with another major health condition (like a blood clot!)\n\nI think as you progress through the different actions to make yourself a better stoic, you have to understand some parts of it will be painful for you, but you have to go through it to fully get better at the way of living.",

Everyone has to go through obstacles in life to reach virtue and tranquility or peacefulness. The obstacles we have can be big or small, and the big ones are the ones that will challenge us. If you lose your sense of sight or ability to walk would be major obstacles for anyone. But the right attitude is to take the obstacle and turn it into a challenge that once you overcome you stoicism wins out. Ganesha from Hinduism is the remover of obstacles and over my time learning about stoicism I have noted a lot of correlations with Hinduism. I think in the future I'm going to write about how the two have similar thoughts/actions/duties. So today when you run into an obstacle, think about how you can turn it into a positive for you, and if you can't, at least have the right attitude about it overall being a challenge |

For as time passes we forget what we learned and end up doing the opposite, and hold opinions the opposite of what we should.” It is only only enough to read read read, even though I enjoy learning by reading myself, one must actually do hands on practice of the training process. If you want to start a business at some point you can not keep learning without 'street smarts' or actually just starting the business. In my work in medicine, you can also read much information, but not until you go through the training period and learn all the small differences in management and outcomes can you truly be an expert. There is a book that talks about the need of about 10,000 hours to be an expert in a certain field and after having gone through Medicine, I feel this is pretty accurate. I was not an expert even right out of training, it took me a few years afterwards to truly feel like an expert in my field. I would say that to anyone in anything that they aspire to be whether its to be an expert in real estate, in medicine, in pizza making, or even shark expert! You need not only the reading, you need to do hands on practice. Same with stoicism, you can read this blog, and other blogs, and other books, but you must actually practice it to become better, and no one is an expert to start. And like I stated, it takes time (10,000 hours!) to become an expert, so START today with one small aspect if you want, no need to get overwhelmed, just take it one hour at a time! |

Duty is an important component of Hinduism as well, as it is one of the most important parts of one's responsibility. If you are a warrior, fight, if you are a politician, make great laws, if you are a doctor, heal. No matter what you end up as, do it well. I've also heard this in more recent times, that you should do your best at what you are doing, whether you are the astronaut going to space or the janitor cleaning the rocket room. Even the janitor can say that he/she is putting people on the moon! Throughout the day we have small duties and large duties, focus on some of the smaller tasks you have at hand and try to do them well. |

Whenever you want to talk about people, its best to take a bird's eye view and see everything all at once--of gatherings, armies, farms, weddings, and divorces, births and deaths, noisy courtrooms or silent spaces, every foreign people, holidays, memorials, markets--all blended together and arranged in a pairing of opposites." This aspect of stoicism has been difficult for me to interpret. I think Marcus Aurelius is trying to emphasize the importance of perspective when analyzing a problem, or thinking about an action. It is easy to make a decision or action, but to make the correct one requires more information and also a perspective of both 'sides'. I have discussed this in an earlier blog post that in order to gain knowledge sometimes its best to listen, and not only listen but to understand from the other person's perspective. Even if they are opposing views to what you feel to by the only truth, you only gain true knowledge and perspective by putting yourself in the other person's position and asking yourself HOW they got to believe in their position. I think in this statement, Marcus Aurelius is also saying that there are many opposing views when you look at it from an 'outsider' perspective. For instance if you were on the moon and looked down to Earth, you may think that politics is petty, or that buying a home is petty, but only then can you see all sides to an action/decision. |

I have discussed this in an earlier blog post that in order to gain knowledge sometimes its best to listen, and not only listen but to understand from the other person's perspective. Even if they are opposing views to what you feel to by the only truth, you only gain true knowledge and perspective by putting yourself in the other person's position and asking yourself HOW they got to believe in their position.\n\nI think in this statement, Marcus Aurelius is also saying that there are many opposing views when you look at it from an 'outsider' perspective. For instance if you were on the moon and looked down to Earth, you may think that politics is petty, or that buying a home is petty, but only then can you see all sides to an action/decision.",

Those in athletic pursuit first choose the sport they want, and then do that work." Goals are essential for everyone to have. Your goal may be not to have a goal! Joking, but I think it is important to spend time thinking what is important to YOU, not your friends, not your family, but what do you want to achieve. Once you have a list, start your actions towards those goals. Its not enough to hope they get completed, you must make the active effort, but only should after you have confirmed that is what you want. I've found when in my life I have set reasonable goals (completing a project, helping a friend, reading a book) and focus towards it, by the time I've realized it I have already finished it and get to move on to another step. What gets overwhelming for most folks is when they set too many goals in an undefined time period. Then when you are unable to complete all the tasks, you feel like you have lost your purpose and feel anxiety about the remaining items. Instead if just one or two were picked over a 1-2 day time period, they will get finished and you will be excited to do the next priorities on your list. So Today, just pick one small goal (don't try to feed the world, but you can start with one person around you!), and give yourself a few days to do it. Don't worry if it seems too small, just pick it and do it. It will give you momentum to pick another goal and then another. Slowly you will get to larger goals and larger time periods, and will succeed in achieving them! |

| body | Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 10.9 “Drama, combat, terror, numbness, and subservience-everyday these things wipe out your sacred principles, whenever your ind entertains them uncritically or lets them slip in.” In order to succeed in most of the aspects in stoicism, one must be able to avoid distractions that will inevitably come up. It may be in the form of an agitated person in a fight with his girlfriend, negative individuals who are always complaining, or just any type of obstacle. Do not let any of these negatives get into your mind or if they do stay there. For instance if you have a flight delayed, do not let it stay in your mind long, acknowledge that it has happened and move on with your life. Today, when you run into that negative person, try not to let their complaints be your complaints, if they complain about the coffee, don’t think about it, if they complain about their job, don’t think about it, don’t let it get in! Lastly, I have found that even with close family members and friends that when I tell them I 'worry' less and do not let things get to me as easily since I started attempting practice of stoicism, I have been accused of 'not caring'. At first I tried to defend myself and stoicism and state that its not that I do not care, but that I don't let it take over my mind. I've found this makes A LOT of people uneasy for some reason, and unfortunately have stopped telling people about my stoic ways. I still have a lot to learn myself and maybe I can explain better to those around me that accuse me of not caring, but right now its been very difficult to get them to see it my way! So don't let others get you down, don't let things persist in your mind, since you have control of that. |

| body | Seneca, On Tranquility of Mind, 5.2: "Above all, it is necessary for a person to have a true self estimate, for we commonly think we can do more than we really can." We avoid thinking about estimate our self worth because we think we may downgrade ourselves, but more commonly we overestimate ourselves and therefore do not see our weaknesses. If you are to overcome obstacles and weakness, first you have to be honest with yourself with what you are below average in. Overtime, you will continue to improve your self awareness, and that is an important aspect you should have before going on to more complex themes in stoicism. Just as you must be self aware of weakness, you will start identifying things that you are strong in. One of my friends has recently lost a loved one, and was put in the position of responsibility above what she thought she could handle, but in the end she came through on all aspects without all other family members even knowing what she did for the whole process (funeral, cremation, prayers, etc), that is commonly done in Hinduism. Today, do not be scared of finding your true weakness, you don't even have to tell anyone, just think about at the basic level what aspects of yourself are weak, and then identify ways to improve yourself, just pick one for today, and as you grow stoicism in your common practice you will do it even without thinking. |

WE all let your impulses get the best of us, and when someone disagrees with us we immediately want to debate them, when someone tells us something bad we get sad, when there are cookies in front of us we want to EAT them. In stoicism, controlling impulse is a very important aspect. Our minds should be in control not our emotions. One way to start is by listening more. It is one of the hardest things to truly do. We all have strong political beliefs, religious beliefs, or words to say. But for today, just try to LISTEN more , and I don't mean just listen and not say words, but try to understand what the person is saying and WHY they believe what they are saying. Try to ask yourself, what life experiences of the person I'm listening to brings him/herself to this opinion. For instance you may have strong opinions on gun control, but listen to the other person or persons and try to understand what life experiences brought them to that opinion. Instead of asking the person do they believe in gun law or not, ask them "can you tell me what life experiences brought you to your opinion, like when you first thought about this in your family or ask a kid, or as an adult that led to you having this opinion." You don't have to change your mind on your opinion, but it will make you much stronger as an individual if you LISTEN and "put yourself in their shoes". |

We should not trust the masses who say only the free can be educated, but rather the lovers of wisdom who say that only the educated are free." Self knowledge and knowledge are freedom. It is easy to get distracted from learning philosophy, but really it is learning how to live, and that is why you are even on this blog. You want to learn how to live better, through various philosophies, but in particular the stoic way. I think one of the most important things in life is to figure out how YOU learn the best and live better, not how someone else has done it, not how someone else learns topics faster. Some people learn better through visual aids, some people learn better through reading on their own. But YOU must figure out how you learn best, not just when you are young, or in college, or learning some new degree, but even at old age when you learn how to use a new technology. We all will be seeing new technologies in our life and we should learn how to use it to live better. Stoicism will give you the way. |

According to stoicism, you have control over today more than yesterday. Yesterday has already happened and you have no way to change what you have already done. But today is the day that you can change and do it. You also have control over the future, so, today think about what you want to do today or in the future and start making a list. Obviously most of these items on the list will have to be done in the future, but once you have this list, you need to daily start working on them, not in the future. Ask that girl out on a date, go buy that car you've wanted, or seek that ultimate job that you want, TODAY. I know this is easier said than done, so lets just start with something simple like choosing a lifestyle change (type of food you want to eat, etc), and as you do more little decisions like this, it will be harder to live each day as if it was your last and continually make changes that you want TODAY. |

| body | Epictetus, Enchiridion, 8: "Don't seek for everything to happen as you wish it would, but rather wish that everything happens as it actually will-then your life will flow well." Another famous saying is 'Everything happens for a reason', and I know this statement can be very painful to someone who has lost a loved one, or had a tragic event happen to them. With this quote I'm not saying that everything happens for a reason, but I am saying that you have to react to everything that happens. You are never going to get everything you want, so if you anticipate that you will not, you will be better adapted to reacting to these bad events. I'm not saying to accept the event, you can cry, you can be sad, but you must react positively, thats what your loved one would want. Thats what will keep you stoic during these times and be able to get through and be a positive force to others that may not have developed stoic philosophy. Today start with small stuff, like increased traffic, or a decision that does not go your way, and build up to bigger things in life so that you can handle anything that comes your way! |

With this quote I'm not saying that everything happens for a reason, but I am saying that you have to react to everything that happens. \n\nYou are never going to get everything you want, so if you anticipate that you will not, you will be better adapted to reacting to these bad events. I'm not saying to accept the event, you can cry, you can be sad, but you must react positively, thats what your loved one would want. Thats what will keep you stoic during these times and be able to get through and be a positive force to others that may not have developed stoic philosophy.\n\nToday start with small stuff, like increased traffic, or a decision that does not go your way, and build up to bigger things in life so that you can handle anything that comes your way!",

| title | February 21, 2018: Virtue |
| body | Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 12.15: "Does the light of a lamp shine and keep its glow until its fuel is spent? Why shouldn't your truth, justice, and self control shine until you are extinguished?" Virtue is an important concept in stoicism and is discussed in relation to many of the other aspects. The particular area of virtue I want to talk about today is self control. Self control of your emotions, of your spending, of your reaction to things that happen to you are totally in your control. It may be hard initially to demonstrate this self control or to realize that you have the power over it, but first you need to at least acknowledge that you do have the control. And once you realize this you will see that this should not be a temporary or on/off switch kind of practice and that this should be performed all the time as long as you live. So today as you go about your day, think about self control and how you should always be practicing this. Start with just a few interactions so it is not overwhelming. It will become second nature to you and you will not have to think on a day to day basis as you start practicing other aspects of stoicism. We will talk more about aspects of virtue in future prescriptions! |

| title | February 20, 2018: Appreciation |
| body | Seneca, Moral Letters, 98.2b: The rational soul is stronger than any kind of fortune-from its own share it guides its affairs here or there, and is itself the cause of a happy or miserable life." Stoic philosophers in the past would practice appreciation by making normal things they did harder, such as walking barefoot, or wearing clothes that were older and torn, or not indulge in the finest foods that they could have afforded. A few of them were very rich but would still frequently make choices of less than what they could afford. It allowed them to appreciate when they did have the better options, and also allowed them to deal with unexpected situations which were not optimal to them, since in the past they had inflicted that on themselves. You can appreciate everyday items in your life more too by starting to have the less option. I'm not saying go live out on the street, or don't eat food all day, but start with something small like if you normally would have drove your car the 1-2 mile trip, instead walk. Try not to eat a large meal for lunch, as dinner will be much more appreciated, believe me, the taste will be much better and overall you will be happier even if you feel a little bit more hungry in the afternoon. There are many more ways and more extreme ways you could do this stoic action, but I suggest just start with smaller ways and you will be on a good start to learning stoic techniques. |
