| body | [](https://pixabay.com/photos/bustos-filsofia-aristotle-756620/) The period of Greek philosophy extends from the sixth century BC to 529 AD. The character of philosophical discourse has not remained the same in this long period from beginning to end. There have been many changes in the subject matter, method of discussion, etc., new problems have arisen. Given this diversity, the history of Greek philosophy can be divided into three main eras. However, it should be kept in mind that according to different philosophers of the same era, there may be differences in one subject or another. They are the subject of extensive discussion. 1. Pre-Socratic period: This period extends from the sixth century BC to the middle of the fifth century, i.e. up to 430 AD. Thelis, Anaximander, Anaximinis, the Pythagorean community, the Ilean community, including Permenides, Empedicles, the Atomic philosophers, the Anaxagoras, and the Sophist community are philosophers of this age. This era is again divided into pre-sophist and sophist. Pre-Sophistic philosophy was naturalistic. On the other hand, the philosophy of the Sophists was humanistic. 2. Socratic period: The Socrates period extends from 430 BC to 320 BC. Although it is called the age of Socrates, it belongs to the age of Aristotle. Philosophy flourished during the time of Plato and Aristotle. This is why this period is called the golden age of philosophy. All kinds of problems of philosophy have found a place in the philosophy of this period. 3. Post-Aristotolean period: The last period of Greek philosophy is the post-Aristotle period. This period extends from 320 BC to 529 AD. Athens, Alexandria and Rome were the centers of philosophy in this era. The philosophy of this age had two branches - Stoicism and Epicurianism. Zeno was the founder of Stoic philosophy and Epicurus was the founder of Epicurean philosophy. Greek philosophy came to an end with the advent of neo-Platonism in the sixth century. On the other hand, neo-Platonic philosophy came to an end in 529 BC when Emperor Justinian declared the closure of Greek philosophical centers in Athens. ### Cheers, @StheaV3n |

| body | [](https://pixabay.com/photos/art-school-of-athens-rapha%C3%ABl-1143741/) Greographical Environment: Greece is a landlocked country in southern Europe. This Greece is the foundation of European civilization. Although a small country, its natural environment was conducive to the development of strong and hardworking people. Its seaports were suitable for shipping, trade and attracting foreign immigrants. The Greek colonies were located on the coast of Asia Minor, Egypt, Sicily, and Italy, connected to the mainland. Due to their connection with the mainland, the Greeks became acquainted with the different ethnic groups of these colonies, their behavior, sociality, traditions, customs, etc. Such a favorable environment has had a profound effect on the social, political, intellectual, and religious life of the whole of Greece, and has opened the door to a new and better civilization. Such natural and human environments help to stimulate wisdom and willpower, liberalize the Greek view of the world and life, sharpen the power of thought and study, help to form the best personality and make overall progress in their thoughts and actions. And for all these reasons, Greece made great strides in politics, religion, ethics, literature, and philosophy. Politics: was a common feature of the politics of the Hellenic city-states, continents and colonies. In each case, there is the evolution of patriarchal monarchy, aristocracy and democracy. The society described in Homer's epic was an ethnic society and the system of government was a patriarchal monarchy. The accumulation of wealth and culture in the hands of a few individuals established the government of the aristocracy and over time it became oligarchy. In the changing social conditions civic upliftment occurs and becomes a challenge for the privileged class. The transition from aristocracy to democracy by strong and ambitious people in the seventh and sixth centuries BC Another method emerges from the progress of the method as its complement or from its opposition. In the words of the jailer, “The history of a nation's philosophy reflects the progress of its thought. On the other hand, the history of the people became a part of his knowledge of history. " The whole of European philosophy is derived from Greek philosophy. The Romans are their own. The philosophy he preached in the language was not their own, but borrowed from the Greeks and presented to the Middle Ages and the modern world in Latin. Contribution of Greek Philosophy: Like other Hellenic thought, Greek philosophy is a fundamental creation and has made significant contributions to the progress of Western civilization. No nation has been able to objectively examine their own nature, institutions, morals, and customs, which the Greeks did. No nation like them has ever looked deeply at the world or seen it with a clear vision. Neutrality, a deep sense of being, as well as a strong ability to abstract, enabled the Greek nation to accurately identify their religious beliefs in those ancient times and to establish independent human thought in the mythological age. They presented all sorts of theoretical and realistic questions of philosophy and answered them with clarity. They created the framework of philosophical thought. Since philosophy and physics were inseparable, at an acceptable stage this structure was also the structure of the natural sciences, and through this structure later European philosophy and science continued and still continues. The main branches of philosophy have found a place in their philosophy and they have created a pattern of philosophical discussion. Even the medieval clerical philosophy Scholasticism could not avoid this philosophy. When the era of philosophical infertility began with the misinterpretation of Aristotle's philosophy, it was the inspiration of Greek philosophy that released this bond, which revived in the form of the Renaissance and opened the door to modern philosophy. The importance of Greek philosophy: But Greek philosophy should not be considered as a mere preparation for modern philosophy. It has its own importance as the progress of human intellectual life. It was the Greeks who achieved the freedom of man and the uniqueness of philosophical thought. They were the ones who proclaimed the authority of wisdom and its two-dimensional application. Wisdom in the Greek sense means not only its interpretation, but also a certain realistic view of life. The leading Greek philosophers have always lived a philosophical life, which Nietzsche considered an absence in modern philosophy. The absence of religious orthodoxy in the interpretation of the world. The philosophical view was helpful in propaganda. At the same time, in the absence of morality based on religious authority, practical philosophy bridged the gap between human spiritual and moral life. Greek philosophy, like all other creations in the Greek world, had blackened features. The spirit of freedom and the passion for knowledge were second to none in the way in which their thinkers were aroused. This is why the study of Greek philosophy is so important. ### Cheers, @StheaV3n |

| body | [](https://pixabay.com/photos/art-school-of-athens-rapha%C3%ABl-1143741/) #### Why Greek philosophy lessons? : Athens by Emperor Justinian in 529 AD The Greek era of philosophy came to an end with the announcement of the closure of all philosophical communities. Then comes the barrier to free thought, the rise of the modern age, the transcendent Middle Ages through the religion-influenced Middle Ages Renaissance. The modern age is the age of enlightenment. About 1400 years between the end of the Greek era and the advent of the modern era. During this long period, there has been a great change in the thinking of the people. In the field of philosophical thought, there have been many variations, scientific approaches have been added, new branches of knowledge have emerged. In a word, modern science, rich in natural sciences and technologies, has come a long way, leaving behind ancient Greek thought. That is why, after many questions, where is the need to study ancient Greek philosophy? #### Historical reasons: In answer to this question, it can be said that it is for historical reasons that modern people need to study Greek philosophy. For, Greek philosophy is an important element of European intellectual life. The progress of European civilization cannot be imagined without Greek philosophy. But judging only from this purely historical point of view, the history of Greek philosophy becomes only the history of civilization and primarily the history of the Greek people. But the history of philosophy has some rules of its own. Attempts to solve philosophical problems related to the knowledge of the world do not follow only external and accidental rules. Here another question arises from the underlying urging of a problem. The progress of one system gives rise to another system as its complement or its opposition. In the words of the jailer, “The history of a nation's philosophy reflects the progress of its thought. On the other hand, the history of the people became a part of his knowledge of history. " The whole of European philosophy is derived from Greek philosophy. The philosophy that the Romans preached in their own language was not their own, but borrowed from the Greeks and presented to the Middle Ages and the modern world in Latin. #### Contribution of Greek philosophy: Like other Hellenic thought, Greek philosophy is a fundamental creation and has made important contributions to the progress of Western civilization. Since philosophy and physics were inseparable, at an acceptable stage this structure was also the structure of the natural sciences, and it was through this framework that later European philosophy and science continued and still continues. The main branches of philosophy have found a place in their philosophy and they have created a pattern of philosophical discussion. Even the medieval clerical philosophy Scholasticism could not avoid this philosophy. When the era of philosophical infertility began with the misinterpretation of Aristotle's philosophy, it was the inspiration of Greek philosophy that released this bond, which was revived in the form of the Renaissance and opened the door to modern philosophy. #### The importance of Greek philosophy: But Greek philosophy should not be considered as a mere preparation for modern philosophy. It also has its own importance as the progress of human intellectual life. The absence of religious orthodoxy in the interpretation of the world the philosophical view was helpful in propaganda. ### Cheers, @StheaV3n |

| body | [](https://unsplash.com/photos/wZfndoCA1rA) Greek philosophy is an important element in the development of human philosophical knowledge. According to Frank Thile, the Greeks not only laid the foundations of later Western thought but also sought to raise and answer some of the possible questions that occupied European civilization over the next two thousand years. The period of Greek philosophy extends from the late seventh century BC to the sixth century AD. Oriental astronomers, mathematicians, and other scholars have made significant contributions to the development of Greek philosophy. All these contributions were welcomed by the Greek city dwellers in the spirit of avoiding mythological influences from philosophical thought. However, in the philosophical and cosmological system that had already developed in the fifth century BC, mythology was used in a figurative sense to express ideas rather than a basic point of view. Different stages of evolution: Philosophy and natural sciences were not separated even in the fifth century BC. Greek philosophy originated in the fifth century BC with an attempt to provide a philosophical explanation for the creation of the universe. It started with materialist philosophical doctrines. Despite their differences, Thelis, Anaximander, Anaximinis, and Heraclitus all seemed to come from a single inert source. Those who believed in this simple materialism later developed some ideas that opened the way to prophesy. In Greek philosophy, dialectical and metaphysical conflicts exist equally. Many Greek philosophers believed in dialectical doctrine, which saw nature as a single entity. The forms of materialism and idealism adopted in ancient Greek philosophy and dialectics and metaphysical doctrine have evolved through a complex expression over a period of more than a thousand years. Materialism is fully expressed in the philosophies of Empedocles, Anaxigoras, Lucipus, and Democritus. In contrast to the materialist philosophy of the atomists, the philosophy of Socrates, especially Plato, expresses idealism. From this time the conflict between materialism and prophecy began. In the history of philosophy, the first is called the ideology of Democritus and the second is called the ideology of Plato. Aristotle, however, was in a state of flux. He developed his doctrine through the debate of the doctrines before him and his time. Emergence of Religion in Philosophy: Questions related to ethics also came into the realm of philosophical problems. However, this ethic was based on theories related to natural knowledge and concepts. In the age of the Roman Empire, the desire and consolation for religious self-oblivion became strong. The wave of religious devotion, belief in the religious community, and mysticism continues to flow from east to west. Philosophy became religious philosophy. Examples of Neo-Platonism and New Pythagoreanism. Neo-Platonism played an important role in the development of Christian philosophy. Finally, in 529 AD, Emperor Justinian issued an order declaring the closure of all philosophical communities in Athens, ending the Greek era of philosophy. However, the development of Greek philosophy was completed before and after the issuance of this order. ### Cheers, @StheaV3n |
