      "body": "Thanks Swalayan, the whale shark trip looked great - we did a similar dive near Cebu in the Philippines although since reading up on the subject I do become concerned that feeding the sharks disrupts their migration paths. Whether there is a long term effect to this, I am not sure.",

      "body": "<html>\n<h2>El Nido is paradise for many travelers - I give a detailed account on my time there.</h2>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d4d07f384.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<p>(Ed note: please check my profile for Part 1 of this story) After a week in the main thoroughfare of El Nido we moved across to new accommodation. The transfer wasn’t without some drama, our new place&nbsp;<a href=\"http://www.hadefetravel.com/cottages/\">Hadefe Beach Cottages</a> is just around from the main bay in El Nido, about a 15minute walk headed north. Initially no tricycle would take us, drivers reasoned that they couldn’t access the area. Usually we would have just walked but both Lou and myself were just coming past a nasty period of food poisoning (again) that had us in bed for about 48hrs. I joked to a few people –&nbsp;you don’t really hear about this type of stuff on the travel brochures but I’d advise that it probably will happen at some point for any extended time in Asia – we were fortunate that Lou had packed a decent medical kit (thanks Mrs L!). Without getting into details this round of food poisoning hit us pretty hard, Lou probably had the worse experience and sadly we both got to know our bathroom decor pretty well.</p>\n<p>I walked around to the new place and managed to get a driver to come back for Lou and the bags. He did a masterful job with the tricycle as he wound through some very narrow lanes and places that a tricycle just shouldn’t go.&nbsp;</p>\n<h3>Fittingly the tricycle was a beautiful shade of lime green and when I turned up to collect Lou I’m sure the Fast &amp; Furious paint job really helped her stomach.</h3>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d6f953cee.jpg\" width=\"810\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<p>The new accommodation was a series of six small cottages on stilts next to the water. There was no beach, just a concrete wall before the steps down into the water, or onto rocks, depending on the tide. Our first day here was spent recovering and enjoying our first hot showers (which wasn’t hot for long!) in a week. I liked the new location as it was much more peaceful, night times were quiet and relaxing plus we felt more integrated with the locals who all lived and worked around us. The walk back around the bay towards El Nido uncovered some nice restaurants for us to eat at, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/caalangk/\">Calaan GK</a> which is part of Gawad Kalinga, a community development foundation. It was here that we met the fantastic&nbsp;<a href=\"https://peaceadventurer.wordpress.com/\">Naved Ali</a>&nbsp;who went to the same college as Lou in Michigan – small world! I’d recommend a visit if you’re in the area, the B&amp;B plays movies on a large screen most nights so that you can grab a drink and relax. It was strange that this area houses two outdoor cinemas and it is also worth checking out the other one at&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/Makulay-Lodge-and-Villas-El-Nido-205662869465200/?fref=nf\">Makulay Lodge</a> &amp; Villas.</p>\n<p>Whilst at Hadefe cottages we decided to invest another day doing one of the tours around the islands to ensure we felt like we’d seen all that El Nido has to offer. Tour C ventures further out amongst the islands and into some amazing lagoons, with swims through holes in the rock to access some of the hidden beaches.&nbsp;</p>\n<h3>With the waves beating into the rocks you need to be a reasonably good swimmer to get through the opening in the rock&nbsp;which is about 4ft wide. If you don’t time this then another wave will pick you up and send you into the sharp limestone. On the other side was a beautiful cove, about 50ft x 50ft with a small beach at the rear.</h3>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d7b830908.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d80a0d384.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<p>Fortunately on this tour we left later in the morning than most of the other tours which meant that we shared our experiences with one other tour boat at most times, this made our experience feel more private and disconnected. I felt like I was able to relax more and I enjoyed the sense of discovery with this tour as many of the locations felt hidden and untouched. Like everywhere here the water remained crystal clear with excellent visibility when snorkeling and we were able to cruise above a variety of different tropical fish. Speaking of fish, lunch was served on a deserted beach allowing even more relaxation. El Nido and the surrounding islands have some of the most stunning settings you could imagine, I can see why it has become such a hotspot within this country and it seems popular with both Filipino’s and foreigners alike.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d8450cb86.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<h3>The final stop was the Matinloc Shrine, a shrine to the Virgin Mary. This spot could have easily featured in Indiana Jones or a similar film with some of the area now overgrown, adding to the allure.&nbsp;</h3>\n<p>We watched as other people on the tour raced up the rock side to grab photos – some people perched themselves in some very precarious spots trying to grab that elusive profile shot, further evidence of the potential for injury&nbsp;in pursuit of such photos. It’s strange to me how easily people seem to disregard safety when getting a photo is involved. The journey back to shore at El Nido was long, about an hour, and reminded me of how far out we had ventured.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d8cb7f276.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<p>On arriving back we had to work our way across the rocky ocean floor to get to the stairs at Hadefe cottages. Unlike most of our boat companions,&nbsp;who were armed with ocean boots and selfie sticks, I had to trust my footing and balance to some badly fitting flip-flops and my overall (lack of) co-ordination. Lou looked (laughed) on from the shore as I lost my footing about three times and went into the water.</p>\n<p>Favourite points of El Nido:</p>\n<ul>\n  <li>Beach Paradise – Coron Coron,&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Marimegmeg+Beach/@11.1469874,119.3942964,17z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x33b65596427bcf45:0xca21b0ca70f45a55\">Marimegmeg</a> and my favourite,&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Nacpan+Beach/@11.3199108,119.4054865,14z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x33b70778b8e77e77:0x1ca10e91bef9c5e0\">Nacpan</a></li>\n  <li>Blue and green lagoons – I was constantly in awe of the water-colour and quality in this part of the world, the small lagoons on the boat tours amplified the effects of the water with perfect surroundings</li>\n  <li>Fall asleep with the waves – The beach cottages were never built for great insulation but the benefit of this is falling asleep whilst hearing the waves lap against the shore</li>\n  <li>Massage – We took some time out to have a massage in El Nido. It’s very cheap (about $10USD for one hour) and well worth it</li>\n  <li>Tricycles – Looking at the tricycles I was convinced I would never fit. And in reality I didn’t fit in a safe way but Lou convinced me and we had fun exploring the local area and bartering with the drivers</li>\n</ul>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/3d980bde41.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<h3>As our stay in El Nido drew to a conclusion I began to feel some sadness.&nbsp;</h3>\n<p>This area of stunning natural beauty is being destroyed by humans – one of the many stories of this type around the world today. Despite its apparent “protected” status many of the tour boats will anchor onto coral and think nothing of letting their guests clamber across rock and coral to get to the beaches and secret coves. On one of our tours we watched a group of non-swimmers cling to a life ring as the tour guide dragged them across coral, rocks and marine life to the various beaches and coves. It could be argued this is the human cost to tourism, especially in a third world / developing country where awareness and protection of natural habitats are not as of greater concern when it comes against making money and survival.&nbsp;</p>\n<h3>With the sadness on my part came the guilt of being a contributor to this. As we travel the world we’ll also be damaging it – emissions from the various forms of transport, the churn of the water and waste from boats that destroy local water life plus the damage created in the production process of all that we consume.</h3>\n<p>El Nido is a paradise and I hope that it remains this way. I hope that local government can develop the area without destroying it or getting caught up in their own corruption and politics. El Nido was declared a resource protected area back in 1998 and the government is unable to direct the funds required to maintain and protect the area. All tourists are required to pay a tour levy which is usually included on any tour, it is then on each person to ensure they don’t leave waste and act responsibly when engaging with the local habitat. A rule we could all apply in everything that we do and something I become increasingly passionate about as we travel the world and enjoy what it has to offer.</p>\n</html>",

      "body": "<html>\n<h2>Where better to start our south east Asia travels than Davao, Philippines, the site of a recent kidnapping and hostage situation by Al Qaeda linked militants, the Abu Sayyaf.&nbsp;</h2>\n<p>Davao City made sense geographically and fiscally but it was also of particular interest to Lou, my girlfriend, who is half Filipino. Our initial plan was to spend a couple of months in the country to try and experience daily life and the island life.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/fe91470213.jpg\" width=\"1226\" height=\"774\"/></p>\n<p>When I had informed my parents of our travel plans my dad immediately jumped onto Google to find out where Davao is in the Philippines. Google spat back some articles about a kidnapping back in September 2015. Typical. <a href=\"http://globalnews.ca/news/2661185/timeline-of-john-ridsdels-kidnapping-and-execution-in-the-philippines/\">Three foreigners and a Filipino were taken from Samal Island</a>, just off the coast of Davao, a popular resort destination. It took a bit of research to provide comfort to my parents about the safety of Davao! I could of argued that it’s probably safer than Europe at the moment but decided to save that line of defense. Sadly this isolated incident had knocked the reputation of Davao but from our time there we could only conclude it is very safe. And yes this did include a&nbsp;day trip to Samal, although we stayed&nbsp;at a resort on the Davao facing side of the island during daylight hours.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/fe273e98f2.jpg\" width=\"1920\" height=\"761\"/></p>\n<p>Coming to the Philippines reminded me of Mexico and Spain in many ways, a humid and hot climate, the buildings and chaos of busy places. Davao is quieter than I have heard Manilla to be, but the city area is still hectic with many people on the streets. Davao city has a 30kmph speed limit which is relatively new, although in rush hour this is never a danger. The locals speak with pride about their mayor Rodrigo Duterte (ed note: now the newly elected President of the Philippines), also known as “The Punisher” who cleaned up the city and introduced the speed limit. Duterte is currently running for President and, should he be elected, has vowed to clean up Manila and the Philippines in the same manner. To his credit I think that the stricter laws work in Davao, crime is low, there is an “911” emergency service, plus the city is relatively clean and peaceful. I will watch with a keen eye to see how he fares if elected.</p>\n<p>Davao was recommended to Lou by a friend in California who grew up in the city – Dennis. Without a strict plan for the Philippines we decided why not start there? We had arrived late at night&nbsp;so elected to grab a hotel close to the airport. Upon collecting our bags and walking out of the airport we promptly got ripped off on the price of a taxi to the hotel – “Welcome to Asia” was my first thought. The following morning Dennis and his brother came to collect us and we headed through the city and up into the hills on the west side, Matina. Our accommodation for the first week was with a lady called Pinky and her Filipino family (the image above is the view from the house). The large gated house was at the top of the hills and covered four floors. We had the ground floor to ourselves which meant we could hide away and work but also get to know the family during meals. Pinky was very hospitable – we had breakfast every morning and she would send down fresh fruit and treats during the day too. Her caramel shortbread was pretty amazing and it became a staple of my diet during that first week – during the hours when my stomach decided to function normally. If you have been living on a ‘western’ diet for any significant length of time I can say with confidence you will get some form of stomach virus / food poisoning. I was rewarded with two bad episodes of food poisoning for my first trip into Asia.&nbsp;</p>\n<h3>Looking for the positives in this I realised two things – I’d lost some weight around my waist gained during my last few months in Sydney. Secondly, if Lou was prepared to endure yo-yo bathroom trips and profuse sweating (to name the better effects) then she must be in for the long haul!</h3>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/fe2755317d.jpg\" width=\"810\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<p>On our first evening we attended an&nbsp;digital&nbsp;networking event with Dennis in the city. About 20 – 25 people from the sector met at a local restaurant and it provided an excellent opportunity for Lou and myself to meet developers and IT project managers based in the city, including some expats. I met an enthusiastic Italian who works in project management as a consultant having recently relocated to Davao to setup his business providing outsourced project management for banks and the financial sector. Vanni and I are still in touch via email and I owe him an update on Vietnam as he’s keen to travel there.</p>\n<h3>Lou was excited to be the first of the two of us to get a photo opportunity that evening – a couple of the locals thought she would be able to win Miss Universe – I have not and will not hear the last of that one.&nbsp;</h3>\n<p>I thought I’d be the first picture request as I stand out in Davao like a sore thumb. Surprisingly there aren’t many 6’5″ white guys in the cities of the southern Philippines. Over my time in Davao I got used to the constant stares from locals although I never felt intimidation from anyone, just curiosity. Although perhaps the stares are just Filipino’s wondering what I did right to be dating Miss Universe.</p>\n<p>After our week in the hills we transferred to an apartment close to the city centre, Camilla Northpointe. Our landlady, Corky, also owns a local Asian fusion restaurant that does some amazing food –&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/asiansidewok/\">www.facebook.com/asiansidewok</a>. It was nice to have an apartment that was close to the city to help us discover more.</p>\n<p>Davao as a city doesn’t have a ton of things to do for visitors. There are some tourist spots but the culture here tends to centre more around eating and malls. The food here is generally very good and a great way to introduce yourself to Filipino cuisine. Coming from a western background to a relatively poor country like the Philippines I found differences in the food – preparation facilities aren’t as good, meat and fish tends to be served with lots of bones and there is an abundance of pork. Most meals that involve chicken, such as adobo, will include small wings and thighs with bones.&nbsp;</p>\n<h3>After a couple of weeks here I did wonder what the Philippines does with all its chicken breasts because I couldn’t find any.&nbsp;</h3>\n<p>Having said that I really enjoyed trying all the different dishes and given the very low cost it made sense for us to eat out for each meal.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/fe27bc3f86.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<p>And the malls. Davao has a number of very large shopping malls spread across the city. As we visited various malls, usually by taxi, I came to wonder where all the money comes from to finance the malls and then who spends the money there to keep them open. During a taxi journey you could come through neighborhoods of abject poverty only to turn the corner to a large American style mall. It was a very confusing experience and there were very few places in Davao where I passed residences that I thought would house families with the disposable incomes to visit and spend at these malls. I guess this is the wealth gap in full effect.</p>\n<h3>Brownouts are the new blackouts.</h3>\n<p>Lou and myself went between malls, cafes, our apartment and even some co-working spaces to do our work and overall we enjoyed these experiences. Davao has a series of rolling blackouts, referred to as brownouts (to make people think the are less serious?) due to the demand for power in the city so at times we’d either chuckle or roll our eyes as internet connections would vanish along with the lighting and aircon. Then you’d get a load whir as a diesel generator kicked in or continued silence as nothing kicked anything. Apparently the power company releases a schedule of the brownouts but most locals grin wryly when you mention this as the actual timings are never on the schedule. Bless this place.</p>\n<p>Lou was also keen to do some charity work in Davao. Through Pinky, our original host and caramel shortbread extraordinaire, we managed to schedule a basketball clinic at the local school that her children had attended. For anyone that doesn’t know, basketball is the national sport of the Philippines. This suited me as NBA was on TV 24/7 and there were basketball courts everywhere.&nbsp;</p>\n<h3>This country is seriously passionate about basketball and many youngsters will race across dusty courts in flip flops or barefoot to try and improve their skills.</h3>\n<p><img src=\"https://i.imgsafe.org/fe278489ca.jpg\" width=\"1777\" height=\"1080\"/></p>\n<p>It was somewhat frustrating to me, the Philippines is a poor country and it seems to lack the infrastructure for many basic things. Add the fact there are over 7,000 islands in the country and you can appreciate the logistical challenges too. I found myself wishing that the youngsters could be taught the game of basketball to a better standard as they are so into the game like I was (and still am!) at that age. Sadly the Filipino’s share their height with rest of Asia so the scouting report would probably read a classic cliche like “You can’t teach height” although it does seem that you can teach undercutting box outs and quick elbows.</p>\n</html>",
