| title | MultiValued Field Extension for RegexTransformer |
| body | Solr has different kinds of transformers which are used while importing data to the search engine. For the whole list of built in transformers, you can take a look at [transformer wiki](https://wiki.apache.org/solr/DataImportHandler#Transformer) For the focus of this post, we will talk about [RegexTransformer](https://wiki.apache.org/solr/DataImportHandler#RegexTransformer) which uses patterns to processes the incoming data. It is quite useful when you need to process the data before indexing, but it has a shortcoming, multivalued fields are not supported. For instance, assuming that you have a field for storing document's language. For single values, it is pretty straightforward. But what if we need multiple values for this field? You might have some serialized format in yout db, and you may need to extract the language related info. For instance, you may have sth like ``` t:9:{u:5;s:7:"fr";k:1;y:2:"jp";k:2;y:2:"bg";} ``` With the build in transformer, you can get "fr,jp,bg" into a single field. But what if you need to put each of these fields into a multiValued field? Solution is extending RegexTransformer to support it ;) You can find [the code of the extension](https://github.com/hcetavaj/multivalueregextransformer) Once you get the code and build the jar, simply add the below property to your entity tag in your import script: ``` transformer="com.hcetavaj.MultiValuedRegex" ``` As this is an [extension to RegexTransformer](https://github.com/hcetavaj/multivalueregextransformer), all of the properties of it support. To enable multiValued field support, simply add the below property to your field mapping: ``` multiRegex="pattern comes here" ``` Then simply start importing and watch ;) |

| title | Customizing Solr's Distance Units |
| body | Solr provides built in support for distance related sorting and searching. [Spatial Search](https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/solr/Spatial+Search) topic has a nice and detailed page on Solr Wiki. Now imagine that you have task, you want to deal with distance, in a way that you can cluster some certain distances into a single "clustered unit". Real life scenario? Well assume that you are city center, and looking for a restaurant. As it is rush hour, although some restaurants appear to be closer to you, it could be actually harder to reach there. Here is a lovely map: In the above plane, we are the black dot, and colorful ones are the restaurants. And below, you can see the the same map with layers based on the "reaching time" So here, the outermost circle is 5 km limit, while innermost is 1 km.Based on our rush hour scenario, Red Restaurants are within 5 mins from us. ( 0 to 1 km) Yellow Restaurants are within 10 mins from us (1 km to 4 km) Green Restaurants are within 20 mins from us (4 km to 5 km) Gray Restaurants are more than 30 mins from us (5+ km) While geofilt function differs on sorting yellow restaurants, we need some function to consider all yellows identical for their distance parameter. In order to write a customized distance function, it is quite useful to take a look at GeoDistValueSourceParser.java and HaversineConstFunction.java classes. You can use [grepcode](http://grepcode.com/file/repo1.maven.org/maven2/org.apache.solr/solr-core/5.2.1/org/apache/solr/search/function/distance/HaversineConstFunction.java?av=f), if you feel lazy to download whole source code. You can find the code for the plugin for the above on [my github](https://github.com/hcetavaj/solrdistancestrip) So how to use it? Well, here comes the configs for solrconfig.xml file. Simply, add the below line to the config file: ``` <valueSourceParser name="strips" class="com.hcetavaj.solr.Strip" /> ``` After this, don't forget to add the jar file into the classpath or to the shared lib folder of the collection. Once the configs are done, you can add the newly created custom value parser for geofilt. Just add ``` _strips_:strips("1,4,5") ``` to your fl while keeping the rest of the params the same for geofilt, for the case mentioned above. You can also use it for sorting, hence getting the results like the second image above. If you check the code carefully, you will see that it can also support queries with identical strip sizes. In order to use it in that way, simply use it with two integers, first one is for the width and the second for the amount of the strips: strips(2,5) - 5 strips with 2 km width. |

"title": "Customizing Solr's Distance Units",
"body": "Solr provides built in support for distance related sorting and searching. [Spatial Search](https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/solr/Spatial+Search) topic has a nice and detailed page on Solr Wiki.\n\nNow imagine that you have task, you want to deal with distance, in a way that you can cluster some certain distances into a single \"clustered unit\".\n\nReal life scenario? Well assume that you are city center, and looking for a restaurant. As it is rush hour, although some restaurants appear to be closer to you, it could be actually harder to reach there.\n\nHere is a lovely map:\n\n\n\nIn the above plane, we are the black dot, and colorful ones are the restaurants. And below, you can see the the same map with layers based on the \"reaching time\"\n\n\n\nSo here, the outermost circle is 5 km limit, while innermost is 1 km.Based on our rush hour scenario,\n\nRed Restaurants are within 5 mins from us. ( 0 to 1 km)\n\nYellow Restaurants are within 10 mins from us (1 km to 4 km)\n\nGreen Restaurants are within 20 mins from us (4 km to 5 km)\n\nGray Restaurants are more than 30 mins from us (5+ km)\n\nWhile geofilt function differs on sorting yellow restaurants, we need some function to consider all yellows identical for their distance parameter.\n\nIn order to write a customized distance function, it is quite useful to take a look at GeoDistValueSourceParser.java and HaversineConstFunction.java classes. You can use [grepcode](http://grepcode.com/file/repo1.maven.org/maven2/org.apache.solr/solr-core/5.2.1/org/apache/solr/search/function/distance/HaversineConstFunction.java?av=f), if you feel lazy to download whole source code.\n\nYou can find the code for the plugin for the above on [my github](https://github.com/hcetavaj/solrdistancestrip)\n\nSo how to use it? Well, here comes the configs for solrconfig.xml file. Simply, add the below line to the config file:\n\n```\n<valueSourceParser name=\"strips\" class=\"com.hcetavaj.solr.Strip\" />\n```\n\nAfter this, don't forget to add the jar file into the classpath or to the shared lib folder of the collection.\n\nOnce the configs are done, you can add the newly created custom value parser for geofilt. Just add \n```\n_strips_:strips(\"1,4,5\") \n```\nto your fl while keeping the rest of the params the same for geofilt, for the case mentioned above. You can also use it for sorting, hence getting the results like the second image above.\n\nIf you check the code carefully, you will see that it can also support queries with identical strip sizes. In order to use it in that way, simply use it with two integers, first one is for the width and the second for the amount of the strips: strips(2,5) - 5 strips with 2 km width.",

| title | Myths of Productivity - 8-hour Workday |
| body | This article is related to the initial one, which you can find here: https://steemit.com/productivity/@stephanruhl/reflections-on-productivity Anyone who has worked in a full-time job is aware of this holy rule, working 8-hours per day. Even the phrase "full-time job" is actually synonym for "8-hour a day" - well, better to call it "at least 8-hour a day". With the exception of some occupations, the question I will share my ideas on is, do we actually need/have to work for 8-hour or longer everyday? If you make a small Google search with 8-hour workday, you will see that there are plenty of results, both telling about its history, people who are supporting and opposing it, with different reasons. Here is the first paragraph from Wikipedia: "The eight-hour day movement or 40-hour week movement, also known as the short-time movement, was a social movement to regulate the length of a working day, preventing excesses and abuses. It was started by James Deb and had its origins in the Industrial Revolution in Britain, where industrial production in large factories transformed working life. The use of child labour was common. The working day could range from 10 to 16 hours, and the work week was typically six days a week." So as you can see from the above line (well, if you are interested, continue to dig it online for the detailed history of the 8-hour), it came with the Industrial Revolution, which was between 1820 - 1840s. And again, it is clear that it was an improvement that time. So do we still need it after almost 200 years? Are we all working in Industrial Revolution era factories? Do we really need/have to sacrifice 1/3 of our day? - which excludes the commuting time, the time you spent for getting ready etc. Are we really creative for 8-hour non-stop? Or rather, can we be creative and productive, and be "in flow" that long, without medications? The questions above would go almost forever. Not many people had asked these, not even to themselves. You know, once sth becomes a norm, you dont even realise it, it is just the part of the life. We do not even think about if there are any ways to measure the productivity, creativity and maybe more important, the motivation of the employee. Employers are happy to see that people comes at 8, start working, then takes a break at 12 for lunch, then at 1 starts working again till 5. And if you are in software business, you know that lunch break never takes that long and job never ends at 5. No need to mention the tools like Slack, other messaging tools and emails which are flowing to you 24/7 (Ever heard any company which considers these as overtime? Of course not ;) ) There is a nice article on Inc: https://www.inc.com/melanie-curtin/in-an-8-hour-day-the-average-worker-is-productive-for-this-many-hours.html to show how actually we spend hour 8-hour in office. And one more here https://blog.bufferapp.com/optimal-work-time-how-long-should-we-work-every-day-the-science-of-mental-strength for some heads up. Personally, here are the flaws which I think, exists in 8-hour workday rule: - Time vs Money: If an employer thinks that he/she is paying to the employee for the time spent for work, then why we are not paid for the all of the extra things we do after work and the time spent in commuting? Are we commuting in crowded buses/subways for fun? - Productivity vs Status Quo: Imagine two different employee, both comes at 8 and leaves at 5. Employee A does his/her daily job in 4 hours, and for the rest of the time he/she checks mails, hangs around social media, and studies some new stuff on MOOCs or tutorials. Employee B doesn't do his/her daily job in 8 hours, because of spending too much time on non-work stuff (social media, checking bank accounts, replying mails), hence he/she works at least 2 hours overtime to catch up. Which one is more productive here? Does Employee A need to stay in office after 4 hours? Can Employee B be motivated to change his/her habits, so he/she can finish the tasks in shorter time? If yes, what would he/she do, if he/she need/have to stay in office longer? - Illusions: Employers or people who has capital got used to measure money with time (interest rates, RoR, RoI etc all based on time), hence they have strong dogma about working hours for the salary which they pay. - Human Resources or Human Restraints: Any HR Dept comes up with any ideas on these issues, other than fancy and trendy things like team building activities and so on? Do you need to build a team out of people who have been working together long enough? Technology is said to make people's life easier and more creative/effective/productive. It is quite easy to compare the technology btw 1800s and 2000s. Is it the same or the gap is too large? Why do we need to work as long as 1800-era worker in 2000s? |

| title | Reflections on Productivity |
| body | Time to time we are all facing the same question: How to be more productive? And another one usually follows: How to be motivated to be productive? Not only us as employees, but the same question bugs employers as well... However, most of the times, it just feels like we are not ready for the answers. We want to be productive and/or motivated in a way that conforms the current conditions. It is not that hard to see a boss who keeps talking about productivity, but once he needs to change something (from the office interior to work schedules), he becomes inactive. Same applies for employees as well: We are looking for a positive change, but damn afraid to take action. In this post (and possibly in the following ones) I would like to share what I am thinking about productivity and motivation, from a software engineer perspective. Some of the things I might say may not be applicable for your case, but hopefully, you will find something useful. If you are in software business, you would agree that productivity usually relies on focus, which eventually leads to a [Flow State](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology)). So how can we remain focused? With the recent startup boom and having less capital requirements to start/do software business, open offices have become kind of standard or something to be expected for software. Although it has benefits, including less expense, feeling of working together (emphasis on feeling here, it is not actually working together... in a way), not everyone is happy to work in an open office. Some people have [misophonia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia) that open office becomes a trap for distraction (How many of us using headphones?) . You may heard of if for the first time, but after thinking for some time, you may realize that you also have it. Noisy keyboards, lousy colleagues (well, you know "heyy we are a family, we are actually not working but bla bla" kind of mottos triggers these), being distracted by seeing sth around and so on... Not that hard to imagine if you have worked in an open office. A small google search about open offices and how people feels about them would give quite insights about the difference of perception between an employee and employer on this part (You can take a look at [here](https://www.fastcompany.com/3022456/the-10-worst-things-about-working-in-an-open-office-in-your-words) for instance.) So okay, open office is not the best choice for focus, hence for productivity, but how to improve the situation if your company only has a single office and it is open (or shared... or a co-working space)? There is an easy option for this case: Working with flexible schedule, including remote working. Though the option itself is easy, it is usually not very easy to convince your boss or HR... You know, questions like "How can we be sure that he/she is working?" Actually this is quite a funny question. What makes you think that he/she is working 8-hour with full focus in office (to HR, do you actually focus on 8-hr a day in office? ) ? Or even if he/she is seems like working (or just looking at the monitor) for 8-hours, how do you know that he/she actually produce anything? And maybe more important aspect, how do you expect a person to have steel like focus for 8-hours, which is not feasible and possible, biologically? Or (well, this is my favorite and would love to ask HR itself) do you really work 8-hours everyday, fully? Asking these questions may not end well if you dont have an open minded boss (and colleagues) to be honest. Besides remote working, a flexible schedule would also help for focus. It is quite naive to think and expect everyone to be productive and highly focused only within a certain time period like 8 to 5. Some people (including myself) would be more productive at night (less people to distract you, silence, lack of distruptions etc). Here, by "flexible schedule" I am not talking about "fake flexiblity" like "Oh you can come to office between 7 to 9 am and leave 4 to 6 pm, we are flexible" kind, but real flexibility. Why not letting people to come to office any time? Most of the software companies keep the servers running 24-hr, so other than enlightment of the office, there is no real cost, if you are worried about that part. (And actually, if you give a thought about it, letting your employee to work remotely would externalize your costs to keep the office warm/cool, power consumption etc etc). For some businesses, it might not be possible to have similar scheme, but for software and IT in general, it is not very hard to think about these to improve the focus and productivity. 8-hr work day is basically a leftover from the industrial revolution era, which is far far behind. So why not thinking for going better? |

| title | World of Stupidity - Part 1 |
| body | I have been kinda tired of people, events and of the world in general, and would like share my opinions on various topics.This will be a series of posts, if I do not feel too lazy to continue... We all know the attacks in Manchester and Jakarta recently (if you are seeing Jakarta attacks for the first time here, yes, you are also part of the stupidity... sorry). So let me start with these events, from one perspective: security checks in daily life.. If you are living in a big city or somewhere near any of conflict areas, possibly you have encountered these "checks". They may stop you and ask you to show your ID card, X-ray your bags, confiscate your water bottle, ask you to drink from your bottle (so they can be sure that you are not carrying something bad )and so on. I have a question for your then... Do you really think these are the proper ways to "secure" people? Feel free to reply this post with your ideas... Because I am quite curious what others are thinking and if I am alone in the way I think. Personally, I think these kind of checks are mostly useless. Think of a terrorist. As he/she knows that they X-ray your bag, would they put their TNT in the bags? Or carry some chemical in a water bottle if they know that those are checked? And how about the random ID checks on the streets? If you are wearing a bit different or having a different style like a beard or some other symbols on you, they will stop and ask you show your ID so they can check your criminal history on some POS-like machines. If you are wearing a suit, well-shaved or have trendy style, you will never be stopped to show your ID (at least I have never seen or encountered such thing). Our security measures are flawed and heavily biased... Instead of realising this and trying to think of different methods, we are just making these flaws and biases stronger with each attack. Summary: We do not have a security problem, we have a stupidity problem. |

| body | I think the article I was showcasing did make that point - that, due to current economic conditions, companies are being forced to ask more of their employees and employees are doing more with less. It's not only the governments' fault, but they play a far larger role in how the economy goes than companies do. Companies are forced to react to changing market forces "as they happen" and government can be one of the biggest influences on markets. |

| body | I couldnt watch the vide because of some network problems (possibly because of the wifi of the cafe) but I just cant see the point of blaming governments for the inflation part... I do know what inflation is and what is the role of the governments, but seriously, corporations are not guilty at all for the burnouts ? Okay, inflation is because of gov'ts, but the working conditions? long working hours? making it almost impossible to get a 2-week long leave? |

I do know what inflation is and what is the role of the governments, but seriously, corporations are not guilty at all for the burnouts ? Okay, inflation is because of gov'ts, but the working conditions? long working hours? making it almost impossible to get a 2-week long leave?",

| title | Sugar&Refined Carb Detox |
| body | I have been on a no sugar and no refined carbs diet since some time in January, and just would like to share my experience and feelings in general... Hope that it will help&motivate people for a healthier lifestyle. Before giving more details, I would like to tell that everyone is different and something which worked fine on me may not be the best thing for you, so I strongly recommend you to do your own research before changing your diet and your lifestyle. You should have a proper medical check as well, if you have any history of illnesses. So everything has started by chance to be honest. First I have started reading articles here and also on medium.com about establishment in general, mostly on economic perspective... Then there were people sharing about how the food industry and healthcare were actually doing bad stuff on us.. Initially I was not impressed, but out of curiosity I have started reading/watching more about those... The claimed evidence was quite realistic, so I wanted to give a try to see the effect. I am 193 cms and was 98 - 99 kgs back in January. My diet was pretty much the same with any other person, and almost 0 exercise... I am about to be 30 in May. Once I made my mind about "experimenting" on myself, I have cut the sugar, at once. For the first 4 or 5 days, I was feeling unwell, tired, and depressed. It was the withdrawal. I found many other people having similar symptoms. I am a coffee addict (not like the people who cant wake up without coffee chains, but the one who drinks unfiltered coffee, multiple cups) and sugar withdrawal was as strong as caffeine withdrawal. At the same time, I have stopped consuming all kinds of processed carbs - snacks, anything with white flour, bread, dumplings, pizzas. I have replaced the missing carbs with butter and olive oil. I haven't restricted my natural carb intake too much though, I still have vegetables (not potatoes though). And I have plenty of meat with natural fat on it. Plus, I have been drinking more water. It happened naturally, nothing to do with the "drink XX glass of water even if you are not thirsty" thingy... And result is... I am now 87.5 kgs... feeling much less tired after work... I feel much sharper mentally... My chronic pollen allergy is almost gone for this spring.. And most of the times I am the only one around who is not sick while others are having flu or cold. And good news for lazy people, this all happened with 0 exercise (well, I am not defending that it is good). I have just recently started calisthenics to shape my body a bit... Brief points of my experience: - Cut the sugar completely, and avoid processed foods as much as you can (you know, it is not very easy nowadays) - Avoid juices... including NFCs and 100% ones without sugar. Fruits themselves are perfectly okay to consume.(This is something interesting. Just research for fruits vs. juices online) - Dont be afraid of the fats and oils. Depending on your country/culture, pick the natural and cold pressed oils and fats. For me it is butter and olive oil. For you it can be different. Research and find the best fit for you. - Yoghurt and milk are okay. Yoghurt is better than milk, ofc without any sugar or sweeteners. - Increase the amount of meat intake. As long as it is natural and with natural fat on it, go for it. (In case your religion or beliefs do not let you eat certain types of meats, just eat the allowed ones, as long as it is natural.) - Nuts - pistachios, hazelnuts, walnuts - you can eat them all. As I said at the beginning, hope this helps you :) |

| body | Eric glad to hear that you are feeling and looking much better! I have found a near paleo diet to be perfect for me and I keep my fats high to ensure optimal hormone production as well as keeping protein at a moderate/high level to support my training and muscle building goals. I keep my carbs pre intra and post workout. Stephan just avoid anything with added sugar. Stick to things like Lean meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. Basically eat whole foods. If it looks like it did in nature when it was killed, picked or dug up then eat it! That is a good place to start and it will do wonders with how you feel :) I will expand on these in coming posts! |
