Ngoài ra, ở mỗi quốc gia khác nhau người ta dùng những đồng tiền khác nhau nên việc giao dịch quốc tế phát sinh khá nhiều chi phí và tốn khá nhiều thời gian để hoàn thành các giao dịch. - Một trong những phát minh vĩ đại nhất của nhân loại trong thế kỷ XX là sự ra đời của Internet, mở ra một thời đại mới của công nghệ không dây. Đi theo xu thế đó là hàng ngàn dịch vụ như yahoo, Facebook, Google, Uber, viber, Zalo,… và hàng triệu website thương mại điện tử ra đời. Để phục vụ cho các nhu cầu thanh toán trực tuyến, đồng tiền bắt đầu được "điện tử hóa", giúp cho các giao dịch trở nên dễ dàng và tiện lợi hơn thông qua ngân hàng trực tuyến - ibanking, qua thẻ visa.v.v... Tuy nhiên việc giao dịch vẫn phải qua trung gian, và với các giao dịch quốc tế phát sinh thêm khá nhiều chi phí như phí chuyển tiền, phí chuyển đổi ngoại tệ. Số lượng đồng tiền này gắn liền với số lượng tiền giấy được phát hành, do vậy vẫn không giải quyết được vấn đề lạm phát dẫn đến nguy cơ mất giá của đồng tiền. - Xu thế thương mại điện tử, giao dịch online ngày càng lớn mạnh, kích thích con người cần phải phát minh ra một loại đồng tiền kỹ thuật số đủ mạnh, sử dụng rộng rãi trên toàn cầu, giao dịch không qua trung gian để cho việc giao dịch trở nên đơn giản, dễ dàng và ít tốn chi phí hơn, việc lưu giữ trở nên an toàn, không bị mất dần giá trị do lạm phát gây ra. Năm 2008, đồng tiền kỹ thuật số đầu tiên trên thế giới ra đời với tên gọi là Bitcoin, một đồng tiền mang tính cách mạng xuất hiện trên internet, mở ra một giải pháp thanh toán hoàn hảo trên phạm vi toàn cầu, với khả năng có thể được gửi trực tiếp đến bất cứ nơi nào trên thế giới ngay lập tức với chi phí gần như bằng 0. Chỉ trong vòng 5 năm, trị giá đồng Bitcoin tăng từ < $0.1 lên $1240, tăng gấp hơn 12 nghìn lần. Giá trị của đồng Bitcoin vượt xa tất cả các đồng tiền USD, EURO,.v.v. và trở thành đồng tiền thành công nhất trong lịch sử tiền tệ thế giới. Như vậy, đồng tiền kỹ thuật số chính là sản phẩm độc đáo của khoa học công nghệ hiện đại, không thể làm giả hay nhân bản, là phương tiện thanh toán và lưu trữ hoàn hảo cho mọi người, do vậy nó sẽ là đồng tiền được sử dụng phổ biến trong tương lai gần.
