\n\n일본은 우리나라만큼이나 도시괴담이 많은 곳이다. 그 유명한 ‘빨간 마스크’부터 시작해 ‘귀신에게 쫓기는 아이(히키코)’ 등 실로 다양한 괴담들이 도시 전체를 떠돈다.\n \n대부분의 도시괴담은 말 그대로 확인되지 않은 해괴한 이야기에 지나지 않는다. 하지만 2011년 여름, 괴담 속 소인(小人)을 직접 목격했다는 이야기가 신문에 실려 사람들을 놀라게 했다.

\n\n이야기의 주인공은 ‘작은 아저씨’ 괴담에 등장하는 아주 작은 인간이다. 키는 8~12cm 정도로, 생김새는 중년남성을 닮았다고 해서 ‘작은 아저씨(小さいおじさん)’라는 별칭이 붙었다.

\n\n‘작은 아저씨’가 신문에 등장한 것은 1972년 아키다현에서 촬영한 사진이 뒤늦게 신문사에 전해지면서 가능했다. 무려 39년이나 지난 2011년 7월1일 큐슈스포츠신문이 기사로 다루면서 ‘작은 아저씨’는 비로소 괴담 밖으로 나왔다.

\n\n당시 신문에 게재된 사진에는 이상한 포즈를 취한 희부연 물체 3개가 포착돼 있었다. 유치원생과 보호자들이 함께 찍은 기념사진에 ‘작은 아저씨’ 3명이 함께 찍혔다는 것이 기사의 내용이었다. 제보를 받은 기자들은 사진 속 여자아이의 왼쪽 다리를 유심히 관찰한 결과 사람 형상을 한 몹시 작은 물체 셋이 촬영된 것으로 결론 내렸다.\n \n

\n\n지난해 이 사진이 공개되자 일본 오컬트 마니아들 사이에서는 일대 소동이 벌어졌다. 유치원생들이 기념 촬영을 한 공원은 오컬트 마니아들의 성지가 됐다. \n\n‘작은 아저씨’ 사진과 관련, 오컬트 연구가 야마구치 빈타로씨는 당시 이렇게 말했다.\n\n

“사진 속 세 물체는 틀림없는 ‘작은 아저씨’다. 이전부터 ‘작은 아저씨’에 관한 정보는 연예인, 회사원, 정치가 등 분야를 막론하고 이어져 왔다. 사진을 면밀히 살펴본 결과 조작된 흔적은 없었다. 이들은 분명 괴담 속 ‘작은 아저씨’다.”

\n\n그렇다면 일본에서 꽤 유명한 ‘작은 아저씨’들의 정체는 과연 무엇일까. 현지인들은 이들이 외계인, 요정, 그것도 아니면 인간의 망상이 빚어낸 가공의 인물이라고 주장해 왔다.

\n\n야마구치씨는 “과학적으로 보면 인간은 쥐나 새 같은 동물을 봤을 때 순간적으로 아주 작은 사람을 본 것처럼 착각한다. 하지만 문제의 사진은 ‘작은 아저씨’가 실존한다는 것을 분명하게 보여준다. ‘작은 아저씨’는 결코 망상이 만들어낸 이미지가 아니다”라고 주장했다.

\n\n한 가지 분명한 것은 일본의 ‘작은 아저씨’ 괴담과 비슷한 이야기가 다른 나라에도 존재한다는 점이다. 영화 ‘반지의 제왕’ 시리즈에 등장하는 소인족 호빗이나 동화 ‘백설공주’에 나오는 일곱 난장이가 대표적이다. 물론 이들은 실제로 사진이 찍힌 적이 전혀 없는 것으로 보아 가공의 인물임이 틀림없다.",
