All fruits are fine but limit them to once per day. Avoid fruit juices and sugary desserts because they will raise your blood sugar too much. The Best Low Carb Sweeteners & Sugar Substitutes on a Ketogenic Diet You might be surprised by just how many sweeteners and sugar substitutes are keto-friendly! Here’s a rundown of some of my favorites. Starchy Vegetables on a Ketogenic Diet (for some) Vegetables are very important on a ketogenic diet, but you have to be careful which ones you pick. Starchy vegetables (like potatoes) are pretty much off-limits and some, like corn, should be eaten sparingly. This is because these starchy foods can throw your body out of ketosis and prevent weight loss. Stick with low-carb veggies that grow above ground (e.g., broccoli, spinach). Carbohydrates to Avoid on a Ketogenic Diet Sugars in their many forms, including glucose, fructose, sucrose, and maltose; grains, such as wheat and corn; root vegetables like potatoes and sweet potatoes; legumes, such as soybeans and peanuts; fruits like apples, oranges, and bananas; starchy vegetables like beans or peas. How Much Fat, Protein, and Carbs Should I Eat? Once you know your calorie needs, and how many calories are in keto diet foods, you’ll want to figure out how much of each macronutrient you should eat. That will depend on your age, gender, weight, height, and activity level. Main Concerns about Going Keto When you start following a ketogenic diet, your body will be forced into a state of ketosis. In that condition, it burns fat instead of carbohydrates as its main source of fuel. That’s why a lot of people on low-carb diets complain about experiencing keto flu symptoms such as irritability, fatigue, headaches, and constipation. Common Reasons for Failure While Following the Keto Lifestyle Though keto is fairly easy to follow, it’s important that you maintain a proper diet and exercise regimen in order to ensure success.
