      "body": "Hello, \n\nI don't know if you are still active on steemit , but if you are, I'm desperately in need of your help.\n\nI am a 34 year old guy from France, and I recently felt anxiety about the consequences on life on a daily basis if we take seriously what both philosophy of mind and neuroscience tells us about the human condition. \n\nBut even if I have a degree in philosophy, I surmised that I wasn't up to date on exactly what was going on in the field and so decided to dig into it a little bit deeper, because my experience has been that with a better understanding of what one is talking about comes relief about previous fears. \n\nBut this time, it was the opposite, the more I read about it the more I found the consequences catastrophic . Right now I'm in a state of shock and panic, and don't really know how to get on with my life with the knowledge that there's no free will.\n\nI have the feeling that everything that makes life worth living depends at some level on agentivity, i.e. the possibility of seeing oneself and the others as the source of their beliefs and able to make choices. I mean from building a life in tune with values you care about to simple human relationships, everything crumbles without it. At least it's how I see things right now and I guess there's the compatibilism we all know about but here's another one : the idea that life can be enjoyed and lived happily without free will. \n\nI would love to hear about that kind of compatibilism, because right now, I feel terrible and lost.\n\nThanks for any reply !\n\nDavid.",

Dennett and the Churchlands, for example, would agree that in many meanings of the term \"consciousness\" it's basically a kind of information-processing. But when it comes to the \"what-it's-like\" sense of consciousness - the [*qualia*](http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/qualia/) - there seem to be convincing arguments that consciousness in *that* sense could not be pure information-processing. Dennett agrees and says consciousness in *that* sense does not exist - mental states are *just* information processing. So are you a Dennettian eliminativist after all? Or do you mean something else by \"consciousness\"? Or do you have some response to those arguments?\n\nI also think it's worth being careful of contradictory solutions if you're literally searching for *truth* instead of something that sounds metaphorically suggestive but doesn't actually mean anything. It sounds deep and suggestive to say \"I am nothing\" *and* \"I am everything\", but both seem literally false upon a moment of reflection. Descartes has given pretty good reason to convince yourself you exist (so you're not *nothing* - nothing can't write steemit posts), and you clearly aren't strawberry ice cream or the Tower of Pisa, so you're not *everything* either. The thought of a world with divine order is a lot more attractive to most people than one where shit just happens .\n\nThis reasoning has its own name - the [Just World Fallacy](https://youarenotsosmart.com/2010/06/07/the-just-world-fallacy/). I think it's one of the most pernicious.",

      "body": "Very high quality content,  @spetey and perfect timing for me and I'm sure many others who have to decide this summer if they want to try a career in Academia. I've decided against it, because \n\n**1)** I enjoy researching lots of different topics very intensely for a short period of time, max 6 months, before I get bored and move on to the next exciting subject. This is not a good personality for an academic, but more suitable for a journalist or writer. \n**2)** I don't agree with the politics of academia. It was hard getting decent grades when my professor was an outspoken socialist and the course was in the soft sciences. This was a sign that philosophy is not a discipline where I can be as rigorous as I'd like to be without having to be afraid of stepping on toes, unless I go the logic/philosophy of language route, for which I'm not nearly smart enough [I know because I'm married to someone who is].\n**3)** I can be exceptional at other things I like better *and* that are in higher demand. \n\nNow my goal is to just graduate with honors and get a publication out of my MA thesis, so that the tuition money wasn't completely wasted.",
