| body | Going to grad school in the humanities can be a rewarding experience, and it is important to get feedback on the decision from a professor's perspective. Generally speaking, attending graduate school in the humanities can provide students with both academic and personal growth opportunities. A professor may encourage potential students to pursue graduate studies if they are passionate about their subject of study and have an interest in advancing their knowledge of it. In addition, grad school provides opportunities for research and critical thinking, which can help broaden one’s understanding of the subject matter. Moreover, pursuing an advanced degree in the humanities may make an individual more competitive in the job market. Employers often consider applicants who have additional qualifications such as graduate degrees when making hiring decisions. Furthermore, completing a doctoral program can open up new career paths that would not be available with just a bachelor’s or master’s degree. However, there are also disadvantages that should be considered before deciding whether to attend grad school in the humanities. It is often expensive to pursue an advanced degree, so individuals should weigh the cost against potential benefits when making this decision. Additionally, many graduate programs require students to invest long hours into research projects and coursework that can take away from other activities outside of academics. Finally, it is important to remember that there are no guarantees of employment after graduating with a higher degree; individuals should carefully consider factors such as job availability before committing themselves to this path. Overall, deciding whether or not to attend grad school in the humanities is a very personal choice that requires careful consideration of all costs and benefits associated with such a decision. you can check some tips on https://dotcinker.com/ about it. Ultimately, it is important for prospective students to approach this decision thoughtfully so they can make an informed choice about their future goals and career plans. |

| body | Hello, I don't know if you are still active on steemit , but if you are, I'm desperately in need of your help. I am a 34 year old guy from France, and I recently felt anxiety about the consequences on life on a daily basis if we take seriously what both philosophy of mind and neuroscience tells us about the human condition. But even if I have a degree in philosophy, I surmised that I wasn't up to date on exactly what was going on in the field and so decided to dig into it a little bit deeper, because my experience has been that with a better understanding of what one is talking about comes relief about previous fears. But this time, it was the opposite, the more I read about it the more I found the consequences catastrophic . Right now I'm in a state of shock and panic, and don't really know how to get on with my life with the knowledge that there's no free will. I have the feeling that everything that makes life worth living depends at some level on agentivity, i.e. the possibility of seeing oneself and the others as the source of their beliefs and able to make choices. I mean from building a life in tune with values you care about to simple human relationships, everything crumbles without it. At least it's how I see things right now and I guess there's the compatibilism we all know about but here's another one : the idea that life can be enjoyed and lived happily without free will. I would love to hear about that kind of compatibilism, because right now, I feel terrible and lost. Thanks for any reply ! David. |

| body | Okay, well I'm curious - especially to see what kind of information-processing does *not* count as what Dennett called "maximally bland computationalism" - which includes *e.g.* quantum computing. And I don't think Dennett is a *pessimist* - he still clearly thinks the world is a wonderful place. You might think the world is wonderful even if it doesn't have unicorns in it without thereby being a "pessimist" for saying there are no unicorns, and Dennett similarly thinks it's wonderful even without *qualia* in it. But I will await your neat solution! |

| body | As we will see next time it is not just any old information that can do the trick. And in the end it doesn't imply computational functionalism at least which is what Searle and others have been targeting. Dennett is a pessimist par excellence, trying to disenchant the world maximally - to me it seems he is getting old and weary and is bitter that he never found a solution to all the paradoxical question he posed with Hofstadter as a youth. Churchland is another beast altogether, and as we will see I have a lot of common ground with him. Unfortunately, Churchland is enveloped by the same pessimism that Dennett and his wife Patricia are particularly aggressive in advocating, but I think there is a neat solution around all these spiritual quagmires. Religion and postmodernism was dead before I was born, and I was educated in the conservative pessimism of analytic, linguistic philosophy, so all these passive-aggressive calls to rigor of all kinds falls completely flat. |

"body": "As we will see next time it is not just any old information that can do the trick. Religion and postmodernism was dead before I was born, and I was educated in the conservative pessimism of analytic, linguistic philosophy, so all these passive-aggressive calls to rigor of all kinds falls completely flat.",

| body | Thanks for your thoughts. Again I'm glad to see cool philosophy problems discussed on steemit and getting some attention! The idea that consciousness is information sounds to me to be the "functionalist" approach to consciousness. Dennett and the Churchlands, for example, would agree that in many meanings of the term "consciousness" it's basically a kind of information-processing. But when it comes to the "what-it's-like" sense of consciousness - the [*qualia*](http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/qualia/) - there seem to be convincing arguments that consciousness in *that* sense could not be pure information-processing. Dennett agrees and says consciousness in *that* sense does not exist - mental states are *just* information processing. So are you a Dennettian eliminativist after all? Or do you mean something else by "consciousness"? Or do you have some response to those arguments? I also think it's worth being careful of contradictory solutions if you're literally searching for *truth* instead of something that sounds metaphorically suggestive but doesn't actually mean anything. It sounds deep and suggestive to say "I am nothing" *and* "I am everything", but both seem literally false upon a moment of reflection. Descartes has given pretty good reason to convince yourself you exist (so you're not *nothing* - nothing can't write steemit posts), and you clearly aren't strawberry ice cream or the Tower of Pisa, so you're not *everything* either. If you're just trying to evoke a kind of wonder or emotional response without actually trying to figure out what's true, then this can be poetically effective, but it is a very different goal from trying to figure out what consciousness *is*. |

| body | Thanks @andreaspeijerb, I'm so glad to hear this was helpful to at least one person! (I also plan to refer my future students to it, so it's useful to me I guess even if no one else reads it.) And congrats on making a hard decision with what sounds like a lot of honest soul-searching. (3) sounds like an especially decisive factor. And I'm sorry to hear you ran into academic politics. I've heard similar anecdotes about the "soft sciences". |

| body | Very high quality content, @spetey and perfect timing for me and I'm sure many others who have to decide this summer if they want to try a career in Academia. I've decided against it, because **1)** I enjoy researching lots of different topics very intensely for a short period of time, max 6 months, before I get bored and move on to the next exciting subject. This is not a good personality for an academic, but more suitable for a journalist or writer. **2)** I don't agree with the politics of academia. It was hard getting decent grades when my professor was an outspoken socialist and the course was in the soft sciences. This was a sign that philosophy is not a discipline where I can be as rigorous as I'd like to be without having to be afraid of stepping on toes, unless I go the logic/philosophy of language route, for which I'm not nearly smart enough [I know because I'm married to someone who is]. **3)** I can be exceptional at other things I like better *and* that are in higher demand. Now my goal is to just graduate with honors and get a publication out of my MA thesis, so that the tuition money wasn't completely wasted. |
