      "body": "<html>\n<p>Hi everyone. I wanted to get some advice from the community here on advancing what I'm doing with my photography. Please let me know if this is too commercial - not trying to self-promote, just would like some ideas.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3929/15403949251_4c2fd598bd_b.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"/></p>\n<p>Photography has always been a fun hobby for me, and I'm not looking to make it a fulltime job. I mainly shoot outdoor adventures/experiences and some travels.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>This past year or so, I started selling some prints just to people I know who saw my photos on Facebook, Instagram, etc.. I had some encouragement to try to promote my work outside of these circles, so I started a Facebook page just for my photography itself as well as a print service page in addition to my portfolio. I've just posted a few photos so far to experiment but haven't promoted the page among my friends or anywhere else. Honestly I have a bit of aversion to self-promotion so this step is the hardest for me.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/sljphotos\">https://www.facebook.com/sljphotos</a></p>\n<p>What experience do people have with Facebook-based methods to promote a followership? I'd like to get some people outside of just my friend circles to tune in -- for example I live in Colorado, and it'd be great to have some people in my community following my work to order prints, etc..&nbsp;</p>\n<p>I'm considering some of the Facebook ad programs, but I don't know how high yield they would be, and I'm working with a modest budget since this is just a side gig for me. If anyone has experience with promoting their photography Facebook page just through the ad service, I'd be really interested to hear about your experience.</p>\n<p>I'd love to hear any experiences, ideas, thoughts... and of course I'd be flattered if you check out any of my work :).       "body": "The desire to understand politics and make unbiased opinions and suggestions for change is something we as US citizens are not taught or encouraged to explore.  It is one of the saddest aspects of US life in my mind.  A free country of the people, by the people, and for the people that has allowed itself to become slaves to corporate greed and politics through sheer ignorance.  I love seeing people thinking outside the box and it gives me hope everytime I see or hear people questioning things.  I encourage you to keep exploring different lines of thought and learning about everything you can.  Make up your own mind.  If you want some interesting  research material for understanding why the US is the way it is and how it got here, I'll give you a few topics to explore without my opinions attached.  The Monroe Doctorine and it's power related to the continent as a whole.  Glass–Steagall and it's effects on the direction of the US economy during the first Clinton administration forward.  NAFTA and SAFTA and most recently the leader of Mexico, Canada, and the US holding a summit to discuss the idea of \"The Amero.\"  And bonus points if you can find information about proxywars and how the US and other world powers use them to violate national sovereignty and manipulate other nations to shadow box each other.",

      "body": "I would think of that approach as more business practical.  Politics is far from a \"right or wrong\" issue in plenty of instances.  There are also costs and benefits that are not directly quantifiable.  In politics you are almost always right and wrong at the same time.  One persons benefit is in general a detriment to another.  All decisions ultimately impact the global dynamic from so many points of view that you would be rating the observations or predictions on a tiered score.  The tiered score is also different based on who the score impacts and the weight of said impact.  For example, the US goes to war with any European or Asian country.  For the US it may be viewed as positive or negative depending on the possible gains or justification.  Within the US, the issue compunds further based on who benefits (military contracts) and who suffers (draftees or families that ultimately deal with lost or absentee members), and that's just two facets of one side of the problem.  You then have to weigh the costs and benefits for each affected party in the country that the US went to war with and ultimately how the war affects all other countries.  So while it is an interesting concept, it is fundamentally flawed because it requires varying degrees of right and wrong and those degreese change and interlope depending on too many factors.",

      "title": "Chapter 2: Greece",
      "body": "<html>\n<p>This is a continuation of my last post about starting my freshman year back in 2004. After finishing my winter quarter classes in Italian, English, chemistry, and matrix algebra, I took a few days off and then flew from Seattle to Rome. En route, I got bumped from my flight and ended up with a first class flight from Cincinnati to Rome. Not a bad way to start my international traveling debut!</p>\n<p>I spent a few days traipsing around Rome, Naples, and then jumped on a large ferry that went from Brindisi, Italy to Igoumenitsa, Greece. The ferry took all night to cross the Adriatic Sea, and when I disembarked around 5am in the gritty little port area, I realized that all of the signs were written in the Greek alphabet, so it took some wandering and horrific mispronunciations to eventually find the bus terminal where I could catch a bus up to Ioannina.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8250/28493045574_9263d1b147_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"591\"/></p>\n<p>We went out to the temple of Dodoni after our first week in Ioannina. Dodoni had an ancient Greek temple and this massive Roman amphitheater. I think I'll always think about the photo below as being sort of a pivotal moment in my life. It was the first time I thought about a photograph as being a creative expression. I thought a little about how I wanted to frame this tree since I liked how it looked up at the top of the theater, and rather than just take a snapshot for posterity, I tried to frame it in a way that captured the feeling of being in this place. From that moment forward, taking photos for me was more about artistic expression than about documentation.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8092/29009195502_64d52ffc17.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\"/></p>\n<p>I gave my camera to my new friend Conner (who became a great friend for me over the years), and he took this photo of me in the middle of the amphitheater.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8084/28495707923_d9560e5950_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"/></p>\n<p>I didn't realize that northwestern Greece had so many mountains. We had arrived in late March, and there was still quite a bit of snow in the mountains during our first few weeks in Ioannina.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8484/28495710013_3a09df2f22_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"/></p>\n<p>We spent another weekend traveling to Meteora in north-central Greece. Yes, this is the area that gave Linkin Park the name for their album. Haha. I think I've been to three gorges now that claim to have a Guinness record for being the deepest, longest, etc.. My sister was studying abroad in Rome, so I went back to Igoumenitsa and took the ferry back across the Adriatic, this time to Bari. In Bari, I got on a train and rode it across the Italian Peninsula to Rome. En route, I sat next to a guy from Syria. He didn't speak much English and I didn't speak much Italian and no Arabic, but we managed to have a small conversation. Nice guy. I probably could not have placed Syria on a map at that time.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The next day in Rome, I walked around with my mom taking photos while we waited for my sister to finish her last bit of work before she was free for the weekend. This is the Parthenon.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8687/28492745514_08a2f80c49_c.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"/></p>\n<p>Pope Francis had died a few weeks earlier, and people were still crowding around the Vatican to pass by his grave, which is pictured below. Mom continued on to catch a ferry to Tunisia, Emily went back to Rome, and I took a train back up to Bari to head back to Ioannina. One of my train trips got delayed and I ended up spending a night sleeping in my sleeping bag in the middle of a park, and then I ended up taking the wrong train and ended up in the port city of Patras, Greece, instead. I'm good at problem solving through and found a bus to take up to Ioannina. There was this one little picturesque creek running through someone's backyard about an hour out of Ioannina. I thought it was so beautiful, and then I ended up passing by it 3-4 more times during my time in Greece.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Back in Ioannina for the last few weeks of my exchange program. I went out to Corfu for a few days with some friends and then had to head back to Athens to catch my flight to Brussels. I'm 30, living in the USA, and working as a doctor.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1682/26350507442_20403b1a30_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"/></p>\n<p>I worked at the hospital most of the night last night and spent a good part of today sleeping, and then I started exploring Steemit for the first time.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5316/5905523736_8136db5bf2_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"478\"/></p>\n<p>The funny thing is that about a year ago I was talking with a few of my friends and I proposed a thought experiment that I had been contemplating. The essence of it was that I wanted to create my own small virtual economy where \"citizens\" could own, buy, or sell stocks in trending ideas or topics. So when I came across Steemit, I laughed and texted my friends that it turned out someone had built what I had been contemplating. Hence, it was wonderful to stumble across this new online society, environment, ecosystem, or whatever we call it.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7626/16968666450_d181242546_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"450\"/></p>\n<p>My life story to date: Born and raised in very small rural towns in the western USA, went to college and studied biochemistry, Arabic, and spent quite some time traveling around the world and living in the Middle East. I love the Middle East. It's a beautiful place, and I hope it will find some peace sometime soon because the people who live there are wonderful, too.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3516/3237727836_6975e4bef4_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"/></p>\n<p>After college I started a research fellowship in epidemiology that included some training in statistical programming and a bit of computer science to expand on an undergrad class in Java, and then started medical school. Before finishing my masters fellowship, though, I spent some time in Zambia working on a research project.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5120/5873094293_0aeb40ac56_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\"/></p>\n<p>I had picked up a few projects involving machine learning in my fellowship, so in medical school I started to work with scikit-learn, Orange, and more recently TensorFlow to apply machine learning classifiers to clinical research projects. In general, I think I'm an engineer or computer scientist at heart because I love projects like this but also felt throughout my life that medicine was sort of a calling, so currently I'm working to combine these two disciplines. If you hadn't noticed, I also love traveling, and in medical school I was able to visit Vietnam three times to work on a research project. I'm going to start in college. This is a photograph from my freshman year dorm room, looking across Lake Union in Seattle at Mount Rainier at sunrise. This was in early January 2005. I had spent my first term taking computer science, calculus, and a Native American studies class. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, but I felt that the Java programming class had been so much easier for other students, so I decided to opt out of pursuing computer science. I didn't realize at the time that many of them had been programming for years. To be honest, I was sort of miserable my first term or two in college. I didn't like Seattle or UW at the time, wasn't interested in the frat/party scene, and had a hard time meeting people with similar interests.&nbsp;For winter term, I signed up for general chemistry, matrix algebra, Italian, and English composition.</p>\n</html>",
