| title | PR Measurement 101: Principles - Which do you use? |
| body | Even today in 2018, effectively measuring public relations programs is still a challenge to many PR practitioners. To overcome this challenge, we have decided to write a three-part blog series (Principles, Essentials, Advancement) that outlines key measurement areas that can help every PR practitioner institute and practice a measurement program for any type of client. This first blog post in this series will layout a handful of principles to PR measurement that we apply to each and every PR measurement program. Below is a list of essential PR measurement principles in order to effectively measure the success of your PR program: * Understand your key business objectives and how they align with your communications program. * Set [SMART](https://sparkpr.com/news/re-thinking-how-to-measure-pr-success/) goals that align with your key business objectives. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-focused, and Time-bound. * Strategies and Tactics. [Understand the difference](https://sparkpr.com/news/gost-podcast/) and how they support your goals and objectives. * Assign KPIs (key performance indicators) that align with your strategies, tactics, and goals, which also align with your key business objectives. * Benchmark longitudinally (over time). Set your KPIs from ground zero and then determine how often you want to check-in on the data to track movement. If your media volume is low (below 100 mentions per month) we would recommend quarterly check-ins and reporting. * Use data as a tool for course correcting. Sure, having big shiny numbers that point to the success of a campaign is great, but it’s not everything. It is just as important to look at the less than impressive numbers to determine what’s not working and how you can correct the PR tactics and strategies moving forward. * Stay clear of PR tool overload. There are seemingly countless media measurement tools to choose from when it comes to media monitoring and measurement. Due diligence and select tools/platforms that best support your needs and budget. Don’t feel pressured by sales reps. Some of my favorite PR-centric tools include [LexisNexis Newsdesk](https://www.lexisnexis.com/en-us/products/newsdesk.page) and [CoverageBook](https://coveragebook.com/). * Metrics should not be vain. We will cover metrics in the next blog post of this series but provide data beyond “vanity metrics” (Impressions, AVEs, UMVs, Share of Voice) and to metrics that point to coverage quality and business impact. * Look beyond the numbers. Do not report only data. Data without context is meaningless, which is why dashboards can be dangerous. It’s very important to provide the proper context to your data points, as well as key insights and strategic program recommendations with your analysis. Do you have any PR measurement principles that you follow? Any questions? Please Tweet us at [@sparkpr](https://twitter.com/sparkpr)! ## About the Author *Alex is currently the Digital Marketing and Analytics Manager at [SparkPR](https://sparkpr.com/), a full-service integrated marketing agency that focuses on Consumer technology & B2B markets. | title | Blockchain: The Next Dot Com Boom or Modern Gold Rush? (Learnings from The Truth Machine: The Blockchain and the Future of Everything) |
| body | Trust is one of the most fundamental currencies when it comes to — well, everything. The absence of trust slows processes and promotes suspicion, often leading to failure — a nightmare for any business or relationship. The growing buzz surrounding blockchain has ultimately turned into a conversation about the opportunities this technology presents for the future, and how it stands to drastically improve so many of the legacy systems originally built and assumed to be trustworthy. [Sparkpr](https://sparkpr.com/), interested and involved in these conversations for some time, recently hosted a thought-provoking discussion with author [Michael J. Casey](http://www.michaeljcasey.com/) and some of the most respected industry experts and journalists. ### Here are some of the key takeaways: **“Trust is extremely expensive,”** declared Michael J. Casey, senior advisor at MIT Media Lab’s Digital Currency Initiative and chairman of CoinDesk’s advisory board, who recently co-authored ‘[The Truth Machine: The Blockchain and the Future of Everything](https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250304964)’ with The Wall Street Journal reporter [Paul Vigna](https://www.wsj.com/news/author/7296). The new book, published on February 27, instantly received multiple accolades. The intimate gathering, hosted by Spark and sponsored by [Sparkchain](https://www.sparkchain.com/), [Current](https://current.us/), and the [Digital Asset Trade Association](http://digitalasset.org/) last week, provided the perfect venue for a discussion on the history of blockchain, the opportunities it presents and a forward-thinking, spirited conversation about what’s next. The event kicked off with networking which led to Michael Casey presenting how he and Vigna first co-authored “The Age of Cryptocurrency: How Bitcoin and The Blockchain Are Changing The Global Economic Order,” published in 2015, which led them to further examine blockchain. He discussed how blockchain has been considered to be the modern “tech bubble” or “the next gold rush” and shared ideas to help demystify and frame the conversation around this disruptive technology. Casey explained that our ability to successfully build civilizations is rooted in storytelling. The way we tell stories allows us to reach agreements and find a common language that establishes a foundation for trade which, ultimately, builds society. “There are two core elements to why we’re able to do this,” said Casey. He continued by suggesting that first, in order to reach an agreement, people need an accurate and efficient way to share information. The delivery of the message has evolved, from one-on-one interaction to riding a horse and using a car or plane to deliver a message, and today the internet has made this process as simple as pushing a button. As a result, the pace with which we share and exchange information has dramatically accelerated. > “The capacity to share information is reaching this profoundly rapid and effective, efficient state where you can broadcast to the world virtually for free and virtually instantaneously. The other component of this is trust, trust is critical,” said Casey. Unfortunately, humans do not inherently trust each other and as result, have institutionalized a solution to this problem. The rise of fiat currencies, as an example, with banks and record-keepers as trusted third-parties that have been given the authority and responsibility to securely maintain our most valuable and sensitive information. These trusted information custodians create centralized honeypots of personal data that become irresistible targets for hackers and thieves. Systems around the world built on this architecture are being breached daily, and as a result, these institutions are losing our trust. In this context, it is easy to see the appeal of an alternative approach where our personal information is secured within a decentralized architecture without the need for third-party middlemen managing our most sensitive and valuable personal information. Blockchain applications built on cryptographically secure decentralized architectures have the potential to not only usher in a new wave of technologies, but a new age of trust. The impactful idea behind creating a decentralized blockchain marketplace is that it presents the possibility to change the very nature of societal organization. The promise of blockchain technology is that it allows individuals to create their own networks, business arrangements, and trusted relationships. Blockchains point everyone toward what’s being referred to as, “The Internet of Value;” as the objective is no longer about directly sending information, but about exchanging anything of value (ie currency, digital assets, data, etc) with complete trust. > “The principle of decentralized record-keeping is real and it’s so profound. This is a shift in technology, a shift in record-keeping that’s 500 years in the making,” stressed Michael Casey. Michael took the history of blockchain through the virtual time machine, detailing how blockchain was built and how certain beliefs and truths have come into being understood, highlighting how the principles of blockchain could have profound implications on the future. As professional communicators, we spend much of our time focused on the details of building great businesses, developing the right message and finding the right audience for our meaningful stories. This gathering was an opportunity to bring attention to this topic, engage industry thought leaders, and collectively imagine where this technology can lead. We at Spark highly recommend everyone pick up a copy of ‘The Truth Machine: The Blockchain and the Future of Everything.” We send our heartfelt thank you to Michael for his great contribution and significant role in continuing to lead and shape the conversation around blockchain and how it will impact the future of everything. |

The delivery of the message has evolved, from one-on-one interaction to riding a horse and using a car or plane to deliver a message, and today the internet has made this process as simple as pushing a button. As a result, the pace with which we share and exchange information has dramatically accelerated.\n\n> “The capacity to share information is reaching this profoundly rapid and effective, efficient state where you can broadcast to the world virtually for free and virtually instantaneously. The other component of this is trust, trust is critical,” said Casey.\n\n\n\nUnfortunately, humans do not inherently trust each other and as result, have institutionalized a solution to this problem. Blockchain applications built on cryptographically secure decentralized architectures have the potential to not only usher in a new wave of technologies, but a new age of trust.\n\n\n\nThe impactful idea behind creating a decentralized blockchain marketplace is that it presents the possibility to change the very nature of societal organization. The promise of blockchain technology is that it allows individuals to create their own networks, business arrangements, and trusted relationships. Blockchains point everyone toward what’s being referred to as, “The Internet of Value;” as the objective is no longer about directly sending information, but about exchanging anything of value (ie currency, digital assets, data, etc) with complete trust.\n\n> “The principle of decentralized record-keeping is real and it’s so profound. This is a shift in technology, a shift in record-keeping that’s 500 years in the making,” stressed Michael Casey.\n\nMichael took the history of blockchain through the virtual time machine, detailing how blockchain was built and how certain beliefs and truths have come into being understood, highlighting how the principles of blockchain could have profound implications on the future.\n\nAs professional communicators, we spend much of our time focused on the details of building great businesses, developing the right message and finding the right audience for our meaningful stories. This gathering was an opportunity to bring attention to this topic, engage industry thought leaders, and collectively imagine where this technology can lead.\n\n\n\nWe at Spark highly recommend everyone pick up a copy of ‘The Truth Machine: The Blockchain and the Future of Everything.” We send our heartfelt thank you to Michael for his great contribution and significant role in continuing to lead and shape the conversation around blockchain and how it will impact the future of everything.\n\n",

| title | The Blockchain-based Market Exploded In 2017, Here Are The Technology Trends You Can Expect in 2018 |
| body | In 2017 there was a rapid growth in blockchain-based technologies and in no time the crypto market begin to take over the media but was this a short-lived trend or will these and other kinds of technologies persist into 2018 and dominate the industry? Here are some thoughts and predictions on technology trends from our experts at Spark.
Alan Soucy, CEO
One undeniable trend in the industry this year has been the emergence of blockchain based protocols and applications. New highly disruptive blockchain projects are being formed at an unprecedented rate and have already begun to disrupt industries such as financial services, gaming, identity verification, and data storage, to name a few. Just as blockchain is a technology built on a decentralized data network securing a distributed ledger, the funding of blockchain projects is a process whereby a network of decentralized individuals is joined by a common interest to fund a specific project. As a result, we anticipate a trend will emerge where technology innovation, and the capital to fuel that innovation, will become less concentrated in Silicon Valley and become increasingly decentralized throughout the world. Anticipating the emergence and importance of blockchain in 2017, early in the year Spark formalized a division with specific skills to service the blockchain and cryptocurrency markets, called [Sparkchain](https://sparkchain.com/)
Donna Burke, Founder
The biggest tech trend of 2017, in my opinion, was the torrid pace of marketing. Nowhere was this felt more acutely than in the blockchain space. Companies that might normally prepare for months to secure venture funding were created, launched, and raised tens of millions of dollars oftentimes in less than three months. Funding was secured for concepts, not betas, and was often by wealthy individual investors and not VCs.
Larry Smalheiser, Vice President
2018 will be the year blockchain technology has a huge disruptive impact across industries and geographic boundaries. We’ll see many real-world applications come online and it will be a key topic that mainstream culture is talking about. Looking beyond the popularity of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, a few other themes took over the media and the social scene this year: influencer marketing, cord-cutting, the Internet of Things, and bots.
Shane Jordan, Vice President of Strategic Insights
[Influencer marketing](https://sparkpr.com/news/influencer-marketing-is-dead-long-live-influencer-relations/) has grown and will continue to grow into a staple of most brands’ communication strategy. Technologies and processes to measure the business impact of influencer marketing and the ability to amplify influencer content will grow more sophisticated and become more commonplace. Spark is uniquely well-positioned to be a leader in this area given our experience, expertise, and proven track record of successfully partnering brands with key influencers, raising valuable brand awareness and driving content engagement.
Linda Chung, Vice President, Broadcast, Video and Media Services
As cord-cutting continues to accelerate at a rapid clip, cable companies are investing in live-streaming services, launching media apps, and partnering up with social media platforms to deliver video content. The upcoming [“TicToc by Bloomberg”](http://variety.com/t/tictoc-by-bloomberg/) on Twitter just launched and we’ll continue to see more of these types of partnerships in 2018.
Katie Johnson, Vice President
The Internet of Things has really gone mainstream at this point. Technology surrounds us and there’s not much we can do these days that doesn’t have some sort of smart component. These devices are intertwined into our lives and because of all the data they are collecting about how we live, will only become more so as we go into 2018 and beyond.
Vanessa Zucker, Senior Marketing Manager
[Bots](https://sparkpr.com/news/evolution-of-advertising-rise-of-the-bots) will continue to manipulate what content we see and how we discover that content, especially on social channels. We will continue to need more sophisticated ways to determine which bot-driven aspects of social profiles and content are valuable, especially while wading through the gross overabundance of (oftentimes low-quality) bot content. In the process of sorting out what we should pay attention to and what we should not, we will redefine how we determine value on social media. For example, swarms of bot followers on Twitter will render a user’s follower count a vanity metric and cloud the judgement of said user as a social media influencer based on follower count. Repetitive liking by bots and retweeting to other bots will also confuse the true value of social interactions. Instead, correlating earned media performance with business impact metrics like sales, conversions, and white paper downloads shows which content actually had an impact on viewers. This places a much higher prize on the ability to capture and sustain genuine human attention; Bots won’t drive sales and conversions but real people will. That is until we give our emotion-based purchasing decisions entirely to bots that can make purchases for us. Which 2017 technology trends that will influence 2018 have you noticed this year? Tweet us @sparkpr and let us know! |

| title | From Blockchain to Bots: The Blockchain-based Market Exploded In 2017, Here Are The Technology Trends You Can Expect in 2018 |
| body | In 2017 there was a rapid growth in blockchain-based technologies and in no time the crypto market begin to take over the media but was this a short-lived trend or will these and other kinds of technologies persist into 2018 and dominate the industry?
Nowhere was this felt more acutely than in the blockchain space. | title | The Tipping Point For Blockchain |
| body | As we reflect on our company’s progress in last year and a company that has for almost 20 years sat at the forefront of digital transformation, we cannot help but notice the impact that crypto and blockchain technology has had on our company. As such, movement that demanded our attention early this year, appeared to be so disruptive that we strengthened and aligned our resources to establish Sparkchain: our dedicated cryptocurrency and blockchain technology practice. Along the way, we witnessed the parallel growth, widespread adoption and tremendous changes in an industry we’ve ridden side-saddle with since Sparkchain’s inception. During this past year, we have partnered with over 20 blockchain companies to reach ambitious business goals, communicate important missions, build reputations and networks of influence and assist in fundraising of more than $400M for innovative projects. Our clients’ proprietary solutions represent many blockchain use cases – from identity verification and protection, re-imagined PHR (personal health records), enhanced enterprise-grade security and infrastructure for DApps, to a mighty contender of the world’s most famous e-retailer, to name just a few. Here are some worthy-to-mention developments and trends we’ve observed this year:
**The year of smart contracts**
Smart contracts are the blockchain’s killer app. Described as a “mechanism for creating a more collaborative economy,” smart contracts – digital codes intended to facilitate, verify, or enforce the negotiation or performance of a contract – can execute complicated multi-party agreements securely and efficiently without the oversight of a central authority. From digital identity to payment processing, clinical research and land title recording, smart contracts can automate and reshape many business processes and operations.
**The influx of capital to fund blockchain-related projects**
Funding for blockchain companies has exploded this year. According to Coindesk, over $3.5 billion was invested in 2017 alone, and more than 75% of those investments occurred in the second half of the year. In fact, by mid-year, the number of funds raised by cryptocurrency and blockchain startups via so-called initial coin offerings (ICOs) or Token Generation Events (TGE’s) eclipsed all angel and seed stage venture capital funding worldwide. It became clear in 2017 that these new innovative fundraising alternatives have begun to disrupt the venture capital community, and based on these trends the ramifications are just beginning to surface.
**Regulations are tightening: The SEC begins to weigh in**
With the explosive growth of funds being raised through ICO’s, the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission has begun to establish a framework of guidelines addressing the legality of ICOs. Recently the Commision ruled that some digital tokens that were previously considered utility tokens are actually securities. These evolving SEC guidelines have created quite a stir within the blockchain and crypto community and, most recently, prompted one company to halt its ICO and return all of the $15 million of raised funds back to investors. The SEC issued a public statement that it will “continue to scrutinize the market vigilantly for improper offerings that seek to sell securities to the general public without the required registration or exemption…”.
**Blockchain is driving disruptive digital transformation**
From reshaping fintech and property and health records management to innovating supply chain, healthcare, banking and insurance industries, among many others, blockchain will drive digital transformation by automation and digitization of processes, tokenization of physical assets and codification of complex contracts. At the core of this transformation is the blockchain’s distributed ledger technology, which is decentralized, immutable, and operates with no regard to international borders.
**Broad adoption has begun**
While many new companies have been launched based on blockchain technologies, there is an increasing number of established institutions investing in blockchain projects as well. For example, Walmart implemented two blockchain projects to track food products from suppliers to retail and ultimately to consumers to address food safety concerns. In the financial sector, U.S. banking leaders Goldman Sachs and J.P.Morgan Chase successfully completed a six-month experimental blockchain-based project for processing equity swaps involving aspects such as amendment and termination of operations, stock splits, and dividends. But these industry giants only represent a small sample of blockchain initiatives. In fact, according to a study by U.K. research firm Juniper Research, more than half of the world’s top corporations are investigating blockchain. It has been a landmark year for Spark and Sparkchain, our rapidly growing blockchain, and crypto focused strategic communications practice. Whether you believe in cryptocurrencies or not, one thing is clear: blockchain technology hit its early stride in 2017. Companies with foresight and courage are now developing blockchain technologies to transform markets and industries. As we gear up for the new year, we look forward to new clients, partners, and opportunities to shape, influence and lead industry conversations. We will continue to deepen our expertise and expand our talented team to support this transformation as we have for other disruptive technology advancements for nearly 20 years. There are many more insights about blockchain we’d like to share and discuss – so stay tuned for our next blog post! |

| title | The Tipping Point For Blockchain |
| body | As we reflect on our company’s progress in last year and a company that has for almost 20 years sat at the forefront of digital transformation, we cannot help but notice the impact that crypto and blockchain technology has had on our company.
In the financial sector, U.S. banking leaders Goldman Sachs and J.P.Morgan Chase successfully completed a six-month experimental blockchain-based project for processing equity swaps involving aspects such as amendment and termination of operations, stock splits, and dividends. | body | Great post with excellent points. Investors should definitely research the projects in which they plan to invest but ICOs require extra research in the midst of lack of as well as changing regulations. While looking for third-party advice, even more effort must go into research since other investors may mislead people to benefit themselves. On the flip side, legitimate companies holding ICOs must provide this information in a transparent way so that potential investors can easily find it. There's a guide on my account for companies that explains [how to be transparent and avoid being called a scam here](https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@sparkchain/how-to-avoid-being-called-a-scam-10-tips-every-blockchain-and-crypto-company-needs-to-know). |
