Popular game engines like Unreal Engine 4, Unity, Game Maker Studio, and even RPG Maker enable anyone with a computer and internet connection to develop their own video games.&nbsp;</p> <p><br> <img src="https://preview.ibb.co/ehgaqS/engines.png" width="640" height="427"/></p> <p><br></p> <p>This Saturday, I am going to host a panel at PAX East -- Surviving Indie Presents: Surviving Development Failure, my story of trying to create my first video game but ultimately failing because of mismanagement, poor business decisions, and the lack of funds to complete it. The demo was created in Game Maker 8 and heavily inspired by older first-person-shooters like DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D. Its theme… mood… the gameplay… I instantly grew attached to it. It was already gaining a decent following on GameJolt; he had people constantly asking my friend when the game was going to be released. I think this is what really made me want to help develop this tame. In my option, utilizing voice actors adds emotion to the story that’s being told. I felt like that’s exactly why we needed to find professional voice actors for every single character of ours. I decided to call several friends who were more than happy to join. These are guys who’ve worked on games like <em>Metal Gear Solid, Fallout 4, TellTale’s Walking Dead, </em>and <em>The Sims 3. </em>I felt like this would give us an advantage, especially since I wanted to find a publisher or investor to help me with development.&nbsp;</p> <p>As we were developing the game, we both realized that using Game Maker 8, a very dated and limited game engine, wouldn’t allow us to fully create the game we had in mind. As someone who believes in “going big or going home,” I made a bold proposal: let’s develop this game using Unreal Engine 4. Considering it was still relatively new at the time, we were both excited about the possibilities this game engine allowed us to imagine. I went to want eLance, which is now known as Upwork, to hire qualified programmers and artists to help us create the game of our dreams.</p> <p><br> We ended up with a nearly complete 3D model of our main character, Detective Michael Thane, a incomplete build of the game, and several various objects that were meant to be used in the vertical slice. Things were looking good, but a harsh reality would eventually sink in -- I was trying to develop a AAA style first-person-shooter with the lack of knowledge and experience in game development.</p> <p><br> As time went on, more money was required to pay my developers. I was the only one on the team working a full-time job because my friend was going to school, so I was eventually unable to fund our developers. But I wasn’t ready to give up just yet. My friend and I decided to use an open source version of the DOOM engine to develop our game. We actually started to make progress. We decided to create the vertical slice in this engine instead because it allowed us to mix in our own artstyle with one that fans are familiar with. I saw that as an opportunity to grew interest and learn more about how publishers and developers invest time and resources into video games, so I decided to submit our game. Once I received the confirmation that we were in, my friend and I began to prepare our pitch material.&nbsp;</p> <p><br> We never prepared a pitch deck before, so it was pretty nerve wracking. We were both tired after 3 builds and seemingly no progress being made. As a final ditch effort, we decided to completely change the game mechanics to something we felt was more realistic within our abilities.
