      "body": "There is clearly a gap between the Transhuman and Transgender groups despite their having some significant common ground.  Although having no clear central authority or even cohesion among these very broad categories there still seems to be little space in which they interact.   This continues to be an odd phenomena and an interesting sociological conundrum.  There seem to be some key aspects to this that are worth considering.   While these are highly speculative with little hard data in direct support they nevertheless are points that may help to find bridges to help support common ground.\n\nPerhaps the largest issue that keeps these two communities apart is the simple fact that they often do not interact with each other.   Most people who are Trans and perhaps even majority of people in general simply have not heard of Transhumanism to begin with.    Trashumanists and Transgender individuals tend to be somewhat insure to begin with and while very few people in the world now are unaware of Transgenderism and its related issues there is nevertheless a great deal of difficulty in getting people to reach out in either direction.   \n\nHow the communities are couched is part of this problem as well.  Transgenderism is often not seen as a technical problem. It is usually defined primarily in terms of  its social aspects.  How are people who express this identity treated and what sort of social and psychological support is desired.  Transgender communities also tend to be close knit exhibiting a certain degree of desire for isolation from the larger world.  This desire for privacy connected with a sense that they are not well understood in the world leads to a higher degree of insularity than might be found in the wider populace.  Transhumanism also has its own drivers of isolation but they come from a different direction.  Transhumanists by and large fall within what might best be described as a 'technophile' background.  These are people who are deeply interested in technology and what can be done with it.   Indeed Transhumanism as a movement sprang from such people getting together and talking about the future and then publishing various works both fictional and academic speculating about the future of technology.   It results in many interesting topics and useful insights however it creates a certain limited space around itself.  Few Transhumanists seem to want to go back to basics and try and explain the jargon and ideas that are foundational to Transhumanism to neophytes.  Indeed most become frustrated even when they try as usually their audiences do not share their enthusiasm for seemingly abstract concepts.   \n\nTo counter this it is important to try and get people talking and engaging more.  Transhumanists would probably be quite happy to have more discussions with people who could find reason to get excited about some of their favorite technologies.  It would help to overcome some of the frustration that is occasionally expressed regarding peoples disinterest or outright rejection of some of the most foundational principles such as human modification.   Likewise Transgender individuals may find it refreshing to meet people who, while not necessarily interested in gender specific issues, are deeply interested in improving lives by finding ways to make radical body modifications more available and more accepted.   Building this as a common ground may well help to make clearer one of the most important common spaces.  \n\nSo how to we broach these issues such that both grounds can find greater reason to talk to each other?  First it certainly behooves Transhumanists to make themselves more visible and more accessible.  Transhumanism remains a fringe group in almost every way.   There needs to be a more concerted effort to get futurist ideas into the common mindset not just as some curiosity of intellectuals but as a real and meaningful social movement toward a brighter future.  It also has to be a positive approach such that people are eager to engage.  This is especially important given the dark future and cyberpunk media that is currently dominant regarding most H+ subjects.   In addition to changing the media with a powerful emphasis on creating it themselves then Transhumanists ought to open up more and talk about H+ with people on a regular basis.  It is also important to create more local interaction between Transhumanists to give people a direct link to the movement where one does not frequently exist at this time.  A greater emphasis in Transhumanism of the areas that go beyond the technology would likely help as well.  After all most Transhumanists would agree that rights to the self and freedom to develop technologies are vital to a successful human future.  Such a world must also treat people equally and as individuals and this also is an area of connection that is too often overlooked.\n\nFrom the other side Transgender individuals and groups might benefit from being a little more open to novel approaches.  A little more flexibility among some groups and willingness to network with technologists would be excellent.  After all it is through developments in technology and medicine that transitions have gotten so far as they have.  An increased degree of curiosity with efforts to learn as much as possible about relevant topics is desirable.   Efforts to proactively campaign in favor of supporting technologies to achieve better outcomes would be a mutual goal and make visible more of the points of connection to Transhumanists than may be readily apparent to many at this time.\n\nThere is much to recommend more interconnection between these movements and shared ideas and goals can be helped along by creating more dialog between them.",

On a very superficial level transsexuals are among the first of the transhumans as we push the limits of our birth sex. I'm merely reaffirming that we have to be the change we want to see.  You being trans, will have a greater impact on the trans community that I would.  Likewise with me and the deaf community, since I'm deaf, that's where I'd have any sort of impact.  =3\n\nI'm sure @KittyHPlus and you will have plenty to talk about, you have two interests that already align and at least one (Transhumanism) can form a friendship and see where things go from there.\n\nWish you the best in your approach with the transgender community inviting them into the transhumanist community!       "body": "One would never expect the whole populace of any group of people to be on board with an idea or philosophy.  Especially, as you say, one as diverse as the Transgender population.  However, there is every reason to wonder why more aren't interested in it which was what the questions in the article are driving at.  The same could absolutely be said of the deaf community and anyone else who would stand to benefit from Transhumanist approaches to technology and social systems.   The more the merrier and hopefully more successful so if a wider array of people can be reached it would be great.  Transgender individuals do stand out a little in this regard though and make them especially interesting in terms of wondering why they are not as involved.  The most notable simply being the scale to which many are interested in modification and customization.  A group like the deaf or blind want one fairly specific feature repaired.  A very important one to be sure but they are less likely to want to change so dramatically.  \n\nI wholeheartedly agree that I and anyone else I can convince to help should be reaching out as much as possible.  In some ways this post was a step in that direction.  To whatever extent possible it might be worth coordinating on some elements.  After all the fundamental interest is similar - changes and improvements to the body.  It will be a challenge to connect with the community but an interesting challenge to be sure and well worth the effort.    \n\nI will reach out to KittyHPlus and see what may be of interest.",

The trans community is a very diverse group just like any other group.  You'd think there'd also be more blind and deaf in the transhumanist community but so far I'm the only deaf transhumanist that I'm aware of. *Shrug*\n\nTell you what though, why don't YOU reach out to the trans community? :)  I always say, be the change you want to see.  I try my best to reach out and advocate for the deaf, you can do the same with trans and we'll tackle our respective groups in bringing them into the fold.\n\nAlso you can work with @KittyHPlus if she feels up to working with you.  You both are trans and transhumanist.  Just don't butt heads. ;) Again, not everyone in a community agrees with each other, so be nice and focus on what you have in common and set aside the differences.",

      "body": "Transhumanism is, at its root, about improving the human condition through the use of technology.  This shows up in many ways from the development of better prosthetics to the development of mind machine interfaces.  Its most focused form is that of the drive to solve the problem of aging itself.  These are all ways in which we seek to improve our bodies and help us live longer and happier lives.   Virtually everyone out there can benefit from these new technologies and likely will to some extent.  Even those who have no desire to radically change their bodies will still find value in new medical applications and repairs to rebuild their existing bodies to better health.   \n\nThere are many though who see these new technologies as opportunities to not just maintain but to enhance themselves to a state that they find superior to the one that was granted by chance and evolution.  Controlled automodification has always been around in small forms such as piercings but has been kept from its full potential by limitations of the body itself.  With those barriers falling futurists and the technologies they promote are starting to see opportunities for people to mold themselves to fit their visions.  It is therefore somewhat surprising that one of the most ardent groups of individuals who frequently seek significant modification is not one which seems to connect with Transhumanism or Futurism.\n\nTransgenderism  is a state of being where people feel that they wish to be or otherwise identify with another body type.  After all we are not defined by our bodies but our minds.  Most people have a preference for a body in their minds though.  Some people wish they were taller, others wish they had a little more meat on their bones or perhaps a different shade of hair.  Beyond that piercings are a standard in many societies as are tattoos.  These are long term or permanent changes to bodies that are more or less considered normal.  Many of them are available now and have been available for quite a long time via technology.  People have embraced these opportunities one at a time as it was learned how to do them and have sought new technologies to help decrease the cost and achieve ever more interesting variants.  It is interesting then, that we have seen far less enthusiasm from the Transgender community for Transhumanism and the technology it supports.\n\nTo be sure there are many who are transgender who, while they may identify with another form or see themselves as another sex, for various reasons do not seek or desire to actually physically change themselves.  However, even with this consideration there are many who are actively trying to change themselves or trying to find the best ways to do so.  There is a whole process now in place to enable this to be accomplished to varying levels depending on the needs and desires of the individual.   \n\nThese technologies to improve humans and their condition is precisely what transhumanism is based in and as others have mentioned this creates a clear alignment of purpose between these groups.   Yet transhumanists do not seem particularly interested in connecting with Transgender individuals.  Indeed it seems that many transgender folks have never heard of that ideology.  Why is it that groups like this are being overlooked by transhumanists?  Why is there so little outreach in this direction and what might be done to try and connect more with those who so clearly have an interest?",

I would generally disagree that Transhumanism is not getting a great deal of media attention even if they do not use that term.   Every time I look at the media I see it saturated with news about the latest developments in Self-Driving cars, new uses of stem cells, robotic eye enhancements, cryopreservation methods and more.  The key here isn't talking about H+ issues but bringing them into a greater focus and linking the disparate elements.  It is also necessary to discuss more of long term applications and values to push back against some of the less well thought out criticisms.   \n\nIt would also be very helpful if we could get more solid transhumanism into our Science Fiction in a positive light.  I wrote a piece about this on my blog here on steemit not too long ago.  We are seeing more good SF coming out with shows like the Expanse but for all their advances they don't integrate very much of what we would normally refer to as Transhumanism.  Even when aspects of what the characters suffer from in the series would be some of the best and most obvious applications thereof.  \n\nI'd be interested in working on getting more media out there looking at things beyond the party and more at what is going on in research fields and among the more grass roots levels of inventors and technophiles as well as people who just think this is a great idea.",
