Blockchain technology is a decentralised digital ledger in which transactions made in cryptocurrencies are recorded chronologically and publicly.\n\n\"There are multiple applications of blockchain (for the company). The team would work on various blockchain products,\" the report quoted a source as saying.\n\nWhile the JioCoin plan is still in initial stage, the official did tell the business daily as to how Reliance Jio could use the new technology. He said: \"It can be used in supply chain management logistics. Loyalty points could altogether be based on JioCoin.\" The company's new venture will be headed by Mukesh Ambani's son Akash Ambani.\n\nThe report comes barely a fortnight after the Finance Ministry and the RBI clearly stated that the creation, trading or usage of virtual currencies as a medium for payment were not authorised by the central bank or monetary authority.\n\nFinance Ministry Arun Jaitley underlined that the virtual currencies including Bitcoin don't have any intrinsic value and are not backed by any kind of assets.\n\nHe said that cryptocurrencies were not legal tender and those indulging in such transactions were doing it at their own risk. Recently, the Income Tax conducted a survey on nine major cryptocurrency exchanges to investigate instances of tax evasion. The Tax authority has reportedly found that there are 6 lakh active cryptocurrency traders in the country.\n\nLast month, the Reserve Bank issued its third warning, reminding the investors of its earlier concerns. In its earlier warnings, the RBI had said that it has not given any licence or authorisation to any entities to operate such schemes or deal with bitcoin or any virtual currency. The government has already constituted a panel under Economic Affairs secretary to deliberate over all issues related to cryptocurrencies and propose specific actions that need to be taken.\n\nPresently, there are over 1300 virtual currencies in operation worldwide. India has identified 11 exchanges dealing with virtual currencies.\n\n<h3>Here's why the RBI and government think that cryptocurrency could pose risks to investors:</h3>\n<ol>\n<li>\nThe RBI says that virtual currency being in digital form are stored in digital-electronic media that are called electronic wallets. Companies that do so see their stocks rise in value afterward. The latest company to jump on this trend is, unexpectedly, Kodak, which just launched its own KodakCoin, a cryptocurrency for photographers. As soon as the news was announced, Kodak’s stock (KODK) jumped up, and as of this writing, its stock price is $5.02, a 60 percent gain.\n\nKodakCoins will work as tokens inside the new blockchain-powered KodakOne rights management platform. The platform will supposedly create a digital ledger of rights ownership that photographers can use to register and license new and old work. Both the platform and cryptocurrency are supposed to “empower photographers and agencies to take greater control in image rights management,” according to the press release. The digital currency is meant to create a new economy for photographers to receive payment and sell work on a secure platform.\n\nKodak CEO Jeff Clarke said in a press statement, “For many in the tech industry, ‘blockchain’ and ‘cryptocurrency’ are hot buzzwords, but for photographers who’ve long struggled to assert control over their work and how it’s used, these buzzwords are the keys to solving what felt like an unsolvable problem.”\n\nThere’s also a precedent for selling artwork or illustrations through blockchain technology, as the world saw with the Ethereum-based CryptoKitties. CryptoKitties features artwork drawn by Guilherme Twardowski, who drew every single cat and cat feature in the game.\n\nBut while Kodak’s proposed blockchain-powered platform and virtual coin sound good on paper, it’s not clear why the photography company needs to use blockchain to achieve its goals, rather than just create another social media platform instead. At a press conference, Pluto Exchange Founder and chief executive Bharat Verma said that his company is all set to launch the country's first app-based wallet that enables bitcoin transactions using a mobile number.\n\"The Pluto Exchange mobile app offers a solution to the coordination problem between payment processors, financial gateways and banks,\" Verma said.\n\n\"All other apps already in the market do transactions using bitcoin addresses, which are long and prone to error while copying. Pluto Exchange will change this scenario by enabling transactions using mobile numbers only, which are just 10 digits,\" he said.\n\nUntil now using a four-digit personal identification number (PIN), users could buy, sell, store and spend bitcoins via a mobile number, Verma added. Elaborating, he said the app would permit a range of transactions, including payments, remittances, business-to-business commerce, supply chain finance, asset management and trading.\n\nHe also said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was concerned about the use of cash for dealing in virtual currencies, whose values have turned volatile of late. \"The RBI considers bitcoins as de-centralised trading that is completely unregulated..so their status is not clear,\" he said. In India, there are at least 15 bitcoin exchange forums, with the majority being set up over the past two years.\n\nBitcoin values in New York, for instance, have soared nearly 1,600 per cent in 2016 and currently range upwards of $15,000. In India, bitcoins have been trading at more than Rs. 10 lakh each, while people are investing amounts ranging from Rs. 3,000 to several lakhs to buy these.",

Litecoin which has been stable at $280 for a week has also dropped 12% in the past 24 hours falling to $250 at the time of writing.\n\nRIPPLE ON A ROLL\nOne winner has again emerged, emulating its actions a week ago by knocking Bitcoin Cash (BCH) off the third spot in the market capacity charts. Ripple has gained a lot of attention in recent weeks, even Nasdaq reported on the altcoin’s performance yesterday. In a sea of red down as far as Bitconnect at 18th, Ripple is the only coin showing green gains this morning.\n\nRipple on a Roll\n\nXRP has shown a shallow but steady upwards gradient over the past week rising from $0.89 to an all-time high of $1.47 according to analytics website Coinmarketcap. This is an impressive 65% gain over the period when most other altcoins, and even Bitcoin, has lost out. Its market capacity is currently $52 billion, whereas Bitcoin Cash has dropped to around $45 billion due to recent selloffs. Even news of today’s SegWit2x BTC hard fork hasn’t been able to bolster its prices as it did previously when people jumped on for free equivalent coins.\n\nCREDIT CARD CREDENCE\nA lot rides on the news in crypto land and a coin can shed or gain double-digit percentages on fake news, FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt), or a pump from someone ‘in the know’ such as John McAfee. Verge is a prime example of this going both ways in the past seven days just on ‘news’.\n\nIt has been good so far for Ripple. News yesterday that SBI Holdings and subsidiary SBI Ripple Asia would establish a consortium with a number of Japanese credit card companies using Ripple’s blockchain has given the digital asset a further boost. Initially, the syndicate will be composed of three major credit card providers including JCB, Sumitomo Mitsui Card and Credit Saison.\n\nRipple is often seen as being more stable and established than other cryptocurrencies.
