titleTHINK BIG
bodyINTRODUCTION: AS MAN THINKS *What is in a thought? Our thoughts are us. they represent us. if we are able to discern the way a person thinks, then we know what he is. The outward presentation of a person does not truly represent his person. For example Eliab (eldest of Jesse's eight sons) looked huge and intimidating externally. that is what we see about him. (). 1Samuel 16:6-7 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, surely the LORD's anointed is before him. But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the ourward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. But he was a fearful person. Not only will he not dare the giant Goliath, he will allow David to dare him. Yet Eliab was of such a stature that Samuel was almost too sure that he was the best king Israel should have. (). 1Samuel 17:28: And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he (David) spoke unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? Know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art down that thou mightest see the battle. in contrast, consider David, the youngest son of Jesse. He looked more of a kitchen boy than a fighter. (). 1Samuel 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and witha of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, arise, anoint him: for this is he. yet the true observation around him was that he was darer. He was proud. He was a fighter inside him. He was a winner. He had felt insulted that a bear or lion would strike at his sheepfold and had fought those beasts to death. He was the type who was hot afraid of death. He was a risk taker. (). 1Samuel 17:36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and his uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. Our thought is an outlet of what we are, inside (). Mat 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Our thought is a summary of our true state of holiness. Holiness originates and resides in the heart. From there it moves to the hands to perform holy jobs, duties and actions. From the heart and thought holiness moves to the feet to advance in holy directions. (). Matthew 12:35: A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. By Prof. Rev. Stephen Olugbemiga Owa Landmark University, Omu Aran

Know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art down that thou mightest see the battle.\n\nin contrast, consider David, the youngest son of Jesse. He looked more of a kitchen boy than a fighter.\n \n (). 1Samuel 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and witha of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, arise, anoint him: for this is he.\n\nyet the true observation around him was that he was darer. He was proud. He was a fighter inside him. He was a winner. He had felt insulted that a bear or lion would strike at his sheepfold and had fought those beasts to death. He was the type who was hot afraid of death. He was a risk taker.\n\n (). 1Samuel 17:36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and his uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.\n\nOur thought is an outlet of what we are, inside\n (). Mat 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.\n\nOur thought is a summary of our true state of holiness. Holiness originates and resides in the heart. From there it moves to the hands to perform holy jobs, duties and actions. From the heart and thought holiness moves to the feet to advance in holy directions.\n (). Matthew 12:35: A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.\n\nBy Prof. Rev. titleIntegrity (Essence and Development )
bodyIntegrity is a quality of being honest and having strong moral values. Having integrity means that you live in accordance with your deepest values, you are honest with everyone and you keep to your word. Integrity is a highly valued trait, especially in leaders. When you live with integrity, you are more likely to be considered for important promotions and leadership positions. To develop your integrity you have to first start with identifying your core values. These would be values you would not compromise, no matter the situation you find yourself in. Next, you have to analyse every choice you make to ensure that you are doing the right thing. Next thing you have to do is to develop a culture for yourself, work on building your self confidence and self esteem, also develop relationships with others who have integrity. The trait ( integrity) is not a common one as it entails following your moral or ethical convictions and doing the right thing in all circumstances, even if no one is there watching you. Having integrity means you are true to yourself and would do nothing that demeans or dishonors you. Contents 1 WHAT IS INTEGRITY 2 IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRITY 3 TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP UP THE PATH OF INTEGRITY 4 HOW TO DEVELOP AND KEEP INTEGRITY 4.1 Define Your Values 4.2 Motivate Integrity 4.3 Examine every choice you make WHAT IS INTEGRITY Integrity is a character that many of us value in others and ourselves, and it’s one we look for consistently in our leaders. But what does it really entail? what does it mean to possess this trait. The dictionary defines integrity as: 1.The state of being whole and entirely undiminished. 2. A sound, unimpaired or perfect condition. 3. Adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral principles or character; Honesty. Although the definition is sound, it can be a bit more complex to define integrity in our everyday lives. You could say that integrity is doing the right thing when faced with an awkward situation and maybe no one is looking, or even when the choice is difficult. We let our actions speak for who we are and what we stand for. IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRITY You do not wake up one morning a bad person,it happens by a thousand tiny surrenders of self -respect for self- interest. – American writer Robert Bra ult. One major importance of integrity is that it is a great key to success. Everyone always admires one with great and outstanding personality and always want to work with such or have business deals with them, having integrity puts you at the top of peoples list. Another benefit of integrity is that it shows a trait of great leadership, and would make you always a candidate for leadership positions. Next is being known as a person with high integrity makes people commit things into your hands and defend you even in your absence. Integrity also makes life very easy and simple. TIPS ON HOW TO KEEP UP THE PATH OF INTEGRITY Learn to take responsibility for your actions, when you make a mistake, own up to it immediately and do what it takes to handle the situation by putting things in place. Always keep to your words, and don’t make promises that you know you can’t keep. Keep your promises even if it takes extra efforts. In times of fear, disasters, and chaos, the temptation is even greater to make a wrong choice. Use these opportunities to demonstrate your true character. Go back to store, and pay for something you forgot to pay for. Avoid white lies. They may seem harmless, but little lies are still lies. Always say the truth. Do not gossip or talk badly about someone. Avoid appearing self-satisfied when you are acting with integrity. Stay humble and down to earth, don’t look for approval. Inform the cashier that you were given too much change. Never betray a friend’s trust even when you are in trouble. Avoid keeping secrets from those you love. Return money that you noticed was dropped without expecting a reward. Never engaging in conversations on how to cheat someone. HOW TO DEVELOP AND KEEP INTEGRITY A Japanese proverb says that ” The reputation of a thousand years may be determined by the conduct of one hour” Your reputation is very much determined by your integrity, and just as the proverb states, all it takes is a single mistake, bad choice, wrong step, to destroy a lifetime worth of integrity. But with these few steps you can work on developing and protecting your own integrity. Define Your Values Living by values would be a difficult task when you don’t know what you truly believe in. Therefore, start by first defining your core values. These are values that no matter what the result would be, you would not go against them. Motivate Integrity There are some traits if one has, such person is likely to have integrity as this traits tally with integrity. such as being humble, having a strong sense of self, having high esteem, being self- confident. These characteristics are vital because, sometimes you would be under intense pressure from others to make the wrong choice. Work on building and improving these characteristics within yourself, so that you would have the ability and courage to do the right thing when the time comes. Work on developing character, spend time getting to know yourself and what you believe in. Develop friendships and work relationships with those who demonstrate integrity, and who will support your decisions. Examine every choice you make Most times people make bad choices, or cut corners when they notice that there is no one watching. Having integrity implies that no matter what, you will always stick to doing the right things and making the right choice: most especially when there is no one watching. You would normally know what is right and wrong, although sometimes you might need some time alone to think and figure out what the right step is. Always asks yourself some questions when you seem not convinced about a choice you want to make. Source: www.vira.ng

titleManagement tips from a brilliant business leader
bodyIn the early days of Microsoft, I felt pretty confident about my coding skills, but I had a lot to learn about project management. This became abundantly clear after an incident in 1978, when I told Intel—a really important customer—that we would deliver them a version of Microsoft BASIC in four weeks. They thought I was crazy to promise it that fast, and it turned out that they were right. We were two weeks late. As it happens, Intel employed someone who would end up helping me improve my management skills: Andy Grove. A precise, hard-driving guy, Andy oversaw their strategy and operations, and he championed the idea of management by objective. Andy and I became friendly over the years, I studied several of the business books he wrote early on, and Microsoft adopted some of the methods that Intel used. I consider Andy one of the great business leaders of the 20th century. Andy’s ideas are a basis for the management system called OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) developed by John Doerr, a venture capitalist and a frequent business partner of mine. In his new book, Measure What Matters: How Google, Bono, and the Gates Foundation Rock the World With OKRs, John explains how OKRs work and shows how you can apply them in all sorts of situations. I’d recommend John’s book for anyone interested in becoming a better manager (and I’d say that even if I hadn’t been interviewed for a super-nice chapter about the Gates Foundation). In the excerpt below, John tells the inside story of how Andy inspired the idea of OKRs. Excerpt from Measure What Matters By John Doerr Intel was Grove’s laboratory for management innovation. He loved to teach, and the company reaped the benefits. A few days after getting hired, I received a coveted invitation to Intel’s Organization, Philosophy, and Economics course, known as iOPEC, a seminar on Intel strategy and operations. Resident professor: Dr. Andy Grove. In the space of an hour, Grove traced the company’s history, year by year. He summarized Intel’s core pursuits: a profit margin twice the industry norm, market leadership in any product line it entered, the creation of “challenging jobs” and “growth opportunities” for employees. Fair enough, I thought, though I’d heard similar things at business school. Then he said something that left a lasting impression on me. He referenced his previous company, Fairchild, where he’d first met Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore and went on to blaze a trail in silicon wafer research. Fairchild was the industry’s gold standard, but it had one great flaw: a lack of “achievement orientation.” “Expertise was very much valued there,” Andy explained. “That is why people got hired. That’s why people got promoted. Their effectiveness at translating that knowledge into actual results was kind of shrugged off.” At Intel, he went on, “we tend to be exactly the opposite. It almost doesn’t matter what you know. It’s what you can do with whatever you know or can acquire and actually accomplish [that] tends to be valued here.” Hence the company’s slogan: “Intel delivers.” It almost doesn’t matter what you know… To claim that knowledge was secondary and execution all-important—well, I wouldn’t learn that at Harvard. I found the proposition thrilling, a real-world affirmation of accomplishment over credentials. But Grove wasn’t finished, and he had saved the best for last. Over a few closing minutes, he outlined a system he’d begun to install in 1971, when Intel was three years old. It was my first exposure to the art of formal goal setting. I was mesmerized. A few unvarnished excerpts, straight from the father of OKRs: Now, the two key phrases…are objectives and the key result. And they match the two purposes. The objective is the direction: “We want to dominate the mid-range microcomputer component business.” That’s an objective. That’s where we’re going to go. Key results for this quarter: “Win ten new designs for the 8085” is one key result. It’s a milestone. The two are not the same… The key result has to be measurable. But at the end you can look, and without any arguments: Did I do that or did I not do it? Yes? No? Simple. No judgments in it. Now, did we dominate the mid-range microcomputer business? That’s for us to argue in the years to come, but over the next quarter we’ll know whether we’ve won ten new designs or not. It was a “very, very simple system,” Grove said, knowing simplicity was catnip to an audience of engineers. On its face, the conception seemed logical, commonsensical—and inspiring. Against the stale management orthodoxy of the period, Grove had created something fresh and original. Strictly speaking, however, his “objectives and key results” did not spring from the void. The process had a precursor. In finding his way, Grove had followed the trail of a legendary, Vienna-born gadfly, the first great “modern” business management thinker: Peter Drucker. Key results for this quarter: “Win ten new designs for the 8085” is one key result. It’s a milestone. The two are not the same…\n\n\nThe key result has to be measurable. But at the end you can look, and without any arguments: Did I do that or did I not do it? Yes? No? Simple. No judgments in it.\n\n\nNow, did we dominate the mid-range microcomputer business? That’s for us to argue in the years to come, but over the next quarter we’ll know whether we’ve won ten new designs or not.\n\nIt was a “very, very simple system,” Grove said, knowing simplicity was catnip to an audience of engineers. On its face, the conception seemed logical, commonsensical—and inspiring. Against the stale management orthodoxy of the period, Grove had created something fresh and original. Strictly speaking, however, his “objectives and key results” did not spring from the void. The process had a precursor. In finding his way, Grove had followed the trail of a legendary, Vienna-born gadfly, the first great “modern” business management thinker: Peter Drucker.\n\nExcerpted from Measure What Matters: How Google, Bono and the Gates Foundation Rock the Work with OKRs by John Doerr, in agreement with Portfolio, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House LLC. titleFixing financial aid
body“Overwhelming,” “confusing,” “scary,” “intimidating,” “nerve-wracking,” “embarrassing,” and “miserable.” The college students I met recently sounded like they were describing a horror film or a tough final exam. Instead, they were recounting their struggles navigating America’s financial aid system. Each year, the U.S. government offers more than $120 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds to help students pay for college. But the overly complex and confusing financial aid system is failing the students most in need of assistance, preventing them from pursuing their dreams of attending college. Only about half of low-income high school seniors who would qualify for federal student loans or grants apply for them. And just under one-third of low-income high school seniors who would be eligible for Pell Grants, a federal subsidy for the neediest students that does not need to be paid back, take advantage of them when they start college. Without financial aid, many students drop out of school or decide not to go to college at all. At a time when our country needs more college graduates, the financial aid application process has become an unnecessary roadblock on the path to a higher education degree. The group of first-generation college students I sat down with recently in Washington, DC told me that one of the biggest challenges they face is the application form itself. Any student who wants a federal grant or loan needs to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as FAFSA. With 108 detailed questions, the FAFSA is more than three times longer than a standard federal income tax form. It quizzes prospective students on “untaxed portions of IRA distributions from IRS Form 1040—Lines (16a minus 15 b)” and uses confusing terms like “emancipated minor” and “dislocated worker.” “I called up my parents to ask, ‘Hey, what does this question mean about welfare,’ and they didn’t even know how to answer it,” Kevion Ellis, a first-generation student attending the University of Northern Colorado said. “It really frustrated me.” Kyle Brodnick, a student at Governors State University, described how even after filling out his application successfully his grant was delayed because of a confusing verification process. As a result, the university dropped him from his classes. “The teacher is like, ‘I don’t have you on my list anymore,’” he said. “It was embarrassing.” Much of the information students are asked to provide is redundant. They must give it once to the federal government and again to the university. And many of the questions are irrelevant for most applicants, making it longer and more complicated than necessary. According to one study, about one-third of the questions on the FAFSA need to be answered by just 1 percent of applicants. These challenges hit low-income and first-generation students the hardest. Without financial aid, many of the neediest students cannot afford tuition and they give up on their dreams of going to college. This is tragic. Not just for students and their families, but our country’s efforts to fight inequity. A high-income student is five times more likely than a low-income student to have a college degree by age 24. Our foundation, along with many university officials, political leaders, and researchers, has been working on several proposals to address these challenges: Simplify the FAFSA form: Because of their financial situations, three-quarters of all FAFSA applicants do not need to answer the long list of questions on the form. One proposal is to shorten the form for these applicants, particularly low-income filers. For some applicants, more information may be needed to consider their aid application, but the number of questions can still be reduced. Some minor changes to the form to make it simpler have already increased the number of students applying for aid. Encourage data sharing: Some FAFSA filers can use existing tax information already reported to the IRS to pre-populate the FAFSA application form using the IRS’s data retrieval tool. We should expand access to this data for more filers in the future. Go mobile: A new mobile app for FAFSA is expected to be released by the U.S. Department of Education this year. Given that more students have mobile devices than computers, this change should lead to higher application rates. At the heart of all these proposals to simplify the financial aid process is an even simpler idea. If we want to give more students the opportunity to go to college, we should meet them where they are. We need to understand the challenges of higher education from their perspective, and that starts by listening to what they have to say. Thanks to the students sharing their stories, I now have a better appreciation of the challenges they face in getting financial aid. Our foundation looks forward to continuing to work with students, universities, government, and other partners on solutions that make a path to a college degree more efficient, more affordable, and more accessible to everyone.
