bodyThanks for explaining about the two schools of thought. Unfortunately articles older than 7 days are wasted votes. I wish authors could still be paid for votes no matter how old the article is. Just because an article wasn't found to be useful by folk in the right place in the first week, doesn't mean the article is worthless to humanity. A blanket ban on divorce is something that I had sincerely tried to justify but it couldn't hold out against the exceptions, no matter how I tried to twist scriptures to be totally against divorce. Consider that King David was divorced by his first wife and then he married another woman, while his first wife married another man under the law of the land: https://steemit.com/christianity/@biblenerd/king-david-remarried-after-divorce-by-first-wife

titleCalling - Vocation
body<html> <p><strong>Calling</strong></p> <p>The bible says that many are called but few are chosen. I think that means that Godʼs call goes out to everyone, as he wants no one to perish, but not many respond to His call. There are many reasons that people do not respond positively to Godʼs call and some of them I have learned from my sons.</p> <p><strong>Distraction</strong></p> <p>Sometimes, I need to call one of the boys to come and help me with a house- hold chore. They are normally upstairs playing on one of their games and I tend to get a few different responses from them before they answer my call. The most common response is that I donʼt get a response at all. In this case I have to go upstairs and open their bedroom door, only to find them so en- grossed in playing their Xbox game that they havenʼt heard me calling them.</p> <p><strong>Wait a minute</strong></p> <p>Another response is that they shout back to me, ʻin a minute dad!ʼ Two things normally follow this response, the minute becomes thirty minutes or I forget to call them again and do the job myself.</p> <p><strong>Ignore</strong></p> <p>Quite often the boys ignore my call because they donʼt want to do the house- hold chore I have waiting for them. When this happens they end up doing the chore and being disciplined.</p> <p><strong>Refuse</strong></p> <p>The worse response is when they refuse to come and help and ask me to re- quest one of their brothers to help instead because they are to busy.</p> <p>Many people today donʼt respond to Godʼs call because they are distracted by the pleasures of this world, or they want to finish what they are doing first, or just ignore or refuse defiantly to respond to Godʼs offer of forgiveness.</p> <p><strong>SJO</strong></p> </html>

There are many reasons that people do not respond positively to Godʼs call and some of them I have learned from my sons.</p>\n<p><strong>Distraction</strong></p>\n<p>Sometimes, I need to call one of the boys to come and help me with a house- hold chore. They are normally upstairs playing on one of their games and I tend to get a few different responses from them before they answer my call. The most common response is that I donʼt get a response at all. In this case I have to go upstairs and open their bedroom door, only to find them so en- grossed in playing their Xbox game that they havenʼt heard me calling them.</p>\n<p><strong>Wait a minute</strong></p>\n<p>Another response is that they shout back to me, ʻin a minute dad!ʼ Two things normally follow this response, the minute becomes thirty minutes or I forget to call them again and do the job myself.</p>\n<p><strong>Ignore</strong></p>\n<p>Quite often the boys ignore my call because they donʼt want to do the house- hold chore I have waiting for them. When this happens they end up doing the chore and being disciplined.</p>\n<p><strong>Refuse</strong></p>\n<p>The worse response is when they refuse to come and help and ask me to re- quest one of their brothers to help instead because they are to busy.</p>\n<p>Many people today donʼt respond to Godʼs call because they are distracted by the pleasures of this world, or they want to finish what they are doing first, or just ignore or refuse defiantly to respond to Godʼs offer of forgiveness.</p>\n<p><strong>SJO</strong></p>\n</html>",

titleMarriage & Divorce
bodyDoes the Law of Moses allows divorce? In the days of Moses there was a widespread practice for men to divorce their wives over sometimes quite trivial matters. The wives unfortunately had no power to divorce their husbands and were therefore at their mercy. Moses told Godʼs people that divorce in Godʼs eyes was wrong but because the practice was so widespread he could not stop it completely. Moses instead gave strict guidelines to the men on what they must do if they desired a divorce in order to protect the wives from the whimsical attitudes of their husbands. Mosaic Divorce Guidelines The husband wishing to divorce his wife was required by mosaic law to give his wife written divorce papers and to go through legal proceedings to estab- lish the grounds for divorce. He could no longer divorce his wife on a whim. The divorce papers protected the divorced wife by enabling her to remarry. What was the trap the pharisees were setting for Jesus? In the days of Jesus there were two main rabbinical schools of thoughts or camps on the subject of divorce. The school of ʻShammaiʼ taught that the only reason for divorce was adultery and was punishable by death. Hillel's school recognized the most trifling cause as enough for divorce, e.g. the wife's burn- ing the husband's food in cooking. The pharisees wanted to entangle Jesus in the dispute between the two school. Jesus responds to the pharisees question by asking them to consider Godʼs primal law in Genesis! Jesus pointed out to the pharisees that Moses only tolerated divorce because of ʻthe hardness of their heartsʼ and that Godʼs primal law states no one should break what God has joined together. Jesusʼ answer confounded both camps. The whole subject of divorce is not fully addressed by Jesus in this exchange with the pharisees as they are not genuinely interested in His answer. Jesus continued His teaching with the disciples alone and St.Paul also addressed the subject in his epistles. SJO

bodyAs a believer in Christ, I understand that we will undergo suffering. In fact, our pastor spoke of this very topic a month ago, reading from 2 Corinthians 1:3-7. I found this message very soothing. It promises that while we suffer as Christ suffered, we will also be comforted. It is a difficult idea to grasp for me when sometimes all I see is bad news in my family's life. That's why faith is so difficult. We have to persist and believe that hard times do not last and that with Christ's strength we will always come out for the better. Please follow me, as I am following you. I need more Christian people to network and share hope with.

bodyI would like to talk to you about the subject of ʻhealingʼ. The New Testament records for us many encounters that Jesus had with people who had various things wrong with them. Jesus met people who had been blind from birth and He miraculously gave them their sight. He also healed the deaf, lame and many people suffering from leprosy. He even raised the dead, most famously His friend Lazarus! Questions about Healing The subject of healing raises many questions for both Christian believers, agnostics and atheists. Some want to know why sickness and suffering afflict people if God is good and all powerful. Some people who are ill are tempted to blame themselves for being sick, feeling they must have upset God in some way and that He is punishing them through their sickness. I know some people have wondered why I have Parkinsonʼs Disease as Iʼm a vicar and therefore must be in Godʼs good books and immune from sickness.

titleWhat held Jesus to the cross
bodyHave you ever asked yourself the question, “What held Jesus on the cross?” If He really was God in the flesh mere nails could not of held Him on that ugly cross. He could have commanded a legion of angels to free Him from the agony of the crucifixion. The crowds of people jeered Jesus whilst He was on the cross... “People who passed by said terrible things about Jesus. They shook their heads and shouted, “So youʼre the one who claimed you could tear down the temple and build it again in three days! If you are Godʼs Son, save yourself and come down from the cross!” (Matthew 27:39-40). Jesus didnʼt climb down from the cross but stayed on it until His last breath, but why? Save Yourself Jesus did not enter the world to save Himself but rather to save all those that would believe in Him, repent of their sins and ask Him to be the leader of their lives. Jesus stayed on the cross for you and me...Us all! It was His love for us that held Him to the cross! He loves us so much that He endured the shame, jeers and pain to set us free from death and sickness. Donʼt ever doubt that God loves you, just look at the cross and Jesus with His outstretched arms and Hear Him say to you this is how much I love YOU!

titleManage and Protect the Earth
bodyIn the book of Genesis which is the first book in the Bible and means the ‘book of beginnings.’ We can read how God created the earth and the universe and said it was ‘good.’ And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good. Gen 1:31 The human race was put on the earth to enjoy it and to take care of it. God gave us two jobs when He entrusted the earth to us all. The first was that we were to ‘manage’ it. The second was that we should ‘protect’ it. To manage the earth meant to farm it and that is the oldest occupation in the world. Now days with the world population as it is, means that the earth needs to provide vast quantities of food in order for the human race to survive. The second requirement God gave us all was to protect the earth which means that we should not harm it or waste its resources. We fail to keep the above requirements because we are selfish and sinful. The earth can provided enough food for everyone yet some starve and some have health problems due to obesity and high cholesterol. We are using up the earth’s resources in an unclean way and not preserving it for the generations to come or the fellow creatures that share it with us. We can all do something, as collectively we are all responsible and God will hold us all to account.

titleThe Power of a Pastoral Visit
bodyAbout a month ago I visited a member of our congregation who’d been diagnosed with cancer. At first it didn’t look like anyone was in, so I tapped on the door very quietly. I knew the family as I’d conducted Carol’s daughters wedding a few years ago. Carol enjoyed the wedding service so much that she had started to attend church. Carol’s husband answered the door and recognised me as the vicar from the wedding. He checked with his wife to see if she was okay for a visitor as she was lying down resting after her chemotherapy session. I heard a squeal of excitement as her husband beckoned me in. I walked into the sitting room to see Carol lying on the sofa with a blanket around her. As soon as she clapped eyes on me she squealed even more and pulled me down to where she was lying for a hug. Her husband made us a cup tea and we all laughed chatted for an hour or so. I reflected on the reaction my visit caused as I made my way home. It was obvious to me that my visit gave Carol a boost. I decided not to underestimate the power of a pastoral visit. Names have been changed to protect the person’s identity.

titleChristians are Cannibals
bodyThe early Christians were accused of cannibalism because they were said to, ‘eat the body and drink the blood of Jesus.’ This was obviously a misunderstanding of the meaning and action that the early Christian’s placed on the celebration of Holy Communion. In John’s gospel chapter six Jesus Himself said, 51 “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.” 52 The Jews therefore quarrelled among themselves, saying, “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?” 53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you”. The church over the years has discussed or argued about the meaning and nature of the eucharist/holy communion. Roman Catholics have been taught to believe in transubstantiation which is the belief that the bread and wine change when the priests prays over them. Anglicans have been taught that the bread and wine change on the recipients reception of the elements via the faith of the recipient. This teaching is called Consubstantiation. Which version is correct? Imagine that two ropes are hanging from the sky. As you look up you see the cloud masking the ropes. Here on earth we see clearly that the two ropes are separate but as we look up we cannot see where the ropes join paradoxically. That I think is the same for many Christian mysteries we cannot see as God sees where doctrines join together. The New King James Version. (1982). (Jn 6:51–53). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.

bodyI agree. I had to deal with this concept when my first husband passed from cancer. At that point I realized I had believed the lie that I wouldn't have to suffer something like that because I was a Christian. That theology can be very damaging to our hearts. Thanks for this article.

titleAs the Father has loved me
bodyJesus was very secure in the knowledge that He was deeply loved by His heavenly Father. God the Father publicly declared His pleasure and love for His Son Jesus at His baptism. You might then question God as to why He allowed His Son to suffer, if the love He had for His Son was so deep. In Isaiah 53, it is revealed that, ‘The LORD says, “It was my will that he should suffer; his death was a sacrifice to bring forgiveness.” Jesus Himself was so devoted to His Father that in the garden of Gethsemane He said those famous words, ‘not my will be done but thy will be done.’ God allowed and willed His beloved Son to suffer the horror of the cross to enable us all to receive forgiveness. Suffering as Christian’s If by becoming a Christian it meant that you would never have to suffer, churches up and down the land would be full to the brim. When you take time to meditate on the life of Jesus and what He endured for us you cannot escape the fact that suffering is part of the Christian life. God loves us enough to allow us to suffer. Do we love God enough to endure what might come our way on the journey of life. Is there room in our theology for suffering. The Purpose of Suffering for the Christian We can see and understand the purpose of suffering in the life of Jesus when we read the Gospels. Jesus didn’t suffer because He’d done anything wrong but rather endured it for our wrong doing to reconcile us to God. Christian’s sometimes suffer because they disobey God either through ignorance of God’s will, personal weakness to various sins or sometime through deliberate disobedience of God’s revealed will. It is sometimes like twisting what Jesus said in the garden of Gethsemane by saying, ‘my will be done not God’s will be done.’ The Christian Life Suffering is not something that a Christian seeks but rather embraces with the knowledge that God’s grace is sufficient in our weakness.
