'인터넷의 돈'(money of internet)이 아니다. 비트코인이 혁신이라고 생각하는 사람들은 결제기반의 인터넷이 무료광고 기반 인터넷을 창조적으로 파괴하리라고 내다보았다. 현재의 인터넷은 대부분 무료로 서비스를 제공한다. 사용자 입장에서는 무료가 주는 이익도 상당하다. 그러나 무료로 서비스를 제공할 수 있으려면 자금력이 뒷받침 되어야 하기 때문에 무료기반 인터넷은 어쩔 수 없이 구글이나 페이스북처럼 거대 공룡 기업과 독점을 낳았다. 돈의 인터넷을 주창하는 이들은 비트코인이 불러올 혁신이 인터넷을 공룡 포탈에게서 개미 유저들에게 권력을 이동시키라고 기대하고 있다.  \n\n스팀잇(steemit)은 페이스북 같은 SNS를 블록체인으로 옮겨놓으면 무슨 일이 벌어질 수 있는지를 잘 보여준다. 페이스북에 올린 글과 사진에 ‘좋아요’가 많이 달리면 기분이 좋다. 만약 스팀잇에 올린 글에 ‘좋아요’에 해당하는 업보트(upvote)가 많으면 기분만 좋은 것이 아니라 부자가 될 수도 있다. 사람들이 준 업보트는 스팀잇에서 사용하는 스팀(Steem)이라는 토큰으로 교환되고 토큰은 공개시장에서 자유롭게 사고 팔리기 때문에 현찰과 다름없다. 실제로 제프버윅(jeff Berwick)이라는 캐나다 사업가는 스팀잇에 올린 자신의 글로 하루 밤 사이에 15,000달러 정도를 벌었다.  꼭 버윅처럼 유명인사가 아니라고 해도 스팀잇에 글을 올려서 얻은 토큰으로 생활이 가능하다. 버윅이 소개한 릴리 다빈이라는 미국인은 마리화나 불법재배 수배를 피해 멕시코로 도망했다. 그녀는 스팀잇에 매일 글을 올리고 하루 2000달러 정도의 수익을 올리며 도망자답지 않게 여유롭게 살아가고 있다. 지지를 많이 받을수록 금액도 크지만 일단 글을 올리는 것만으로도 보상을 받을 수 있다. 심지어는 글을 올리지 않고 다른 이들의 글에 투표하는 행위만으로도 보상을 받는다. 보상은 누군가가 주는 것이 아니라 시스템이 제공한다. 이 부분을 납득하기는 쉽지 않다. 스팀잇이 구동되는 블록체인의 시스템이 정해진 규칙에 따라 글을 올린 사람과 글을 추천한 사람에게 지급한다. 그리고 보상에 사용한 토큰은 암호화폐 시장에서 수요와 공급의 법칙에 따라 가격을 형성한다. 보상에 사용되는 스팀은 글로벌 시장에서 유통되는데 전체 시장가치는 2017년 8월 현재 3억달러가 넘는다. 이들은 오프라인 회합도 거창하게 한다. 2016년 11월에 암스테르담에서 열린 첫번째 스팀페스트(steemfest)에 참여한 35명의 연사들은 32개 국가에서 왔는데 모두 스팀잇에서 얻은 스팀달러로 여행경비를 마련했다고 한다 .\n\n스팀잇에서 이루어지는 보상은 정보를 생산한 사람들과 정보를 평가하는 사람들에게 돌아간다. 시스템이 보상을 하기 때문에 사용자들에게는 눈치를 봐야할 ‘갑’이 존재하지 않는다. 스팀잇과 스팀의 가치가 폭발적으로 증가할수록 기성화된 공룡 SNS 기업들의 수익구조에 의문을 품을 수밖에 없다. 페이스북이나 카카오스토리 같은 SNS는 수많은 사람들의 지식과 수고로 만든 가치를 회사의 주주들에게 헌납하는 구조이지만 스팀잇이 회사의 뜻대로 움직일 수 있는 공간이 아니라는 사실을 스팀잇의 CEO인 네드 스캇은 강조한다. \n\n하루 밤 사이에 글 하나로 15000달러를 번 버윅을 포함해서 많은 사람들은 스팀잇이 지속가능하다고 보지 않았다. 그러나 현실에서 벌어지고 있다. 납득이 가지 않는다는 이유로 블록체인이 만들고 있는 변화에 눈과 귀를 닫는 것은 별로 현명한 행동이 아니다. 현실에서 작동하고 있는데도 이를 가능하지 않다고 생각했던 상식에 오히려 의문을 품어야 한다. \n블록체인으로 이루어지는 토큰화(tokenization)가 바로 ‘돈의 인터넷’이 현실에서 작동하는 방식이다. 모든 권리가 미분화되고, 유동화되며, 즉시적이며 글로벌한 시장에서 거래된다. 제품도 사업도 아이디어도 놀이도 그리고 자신의 신분마저도 토큰화의 대상에서 예외가 아니다. 심지어는 벌칙마저도 토큰화할 수 있다.  \n \n주기적으로 관리해주지 않으면 쌓이는 스펨 때문에 이메일은 부차적인 통신수단으로 전락했다. 그 피해를 비용으로 따지면 년 200억달러 정도에 이른다고한다. 토큰을 이용해 이 문제를 해결하려는 벤처기업이있다. 비트바운스(Bitbounce)라는 회사이다. 대량메일이나 광고를 보내려는 사람은 일정한 토큰을 메일에 첨부한다. 송신자에게는 일종의 벌칙이지만 수신자에게는 수입이다. 수신자가 메일을 클릭해서 열면 토큰을 얻는다. 수신자의 주소록에 있거나 수신자가 면제해준 이들은 토큰을 첨부할 필요가 없다. 물론 수신자는 선별적으로 토큰을 받을 수도 있고 돌려보낼 수도 있다. 손편지를 보내기 위해서 붙여야 하는 우표와 비슷한데 수신자가 우표를 재활용한다는 차이가 있다. 우표를 독점적으로 판매해서 이익을 챙기는 체신부가 없는 분산형 방식의 우표라는 점에서 블록체인의 분산형 속성을 다시 한번 확인할 수 있는 사업모델이다. 이 사업 아이디어는 많은 이들의 호응을 얻어 매달 사용자가 300%씩 성장하는 중이다.\n\n이 회사는 메일에 첨부하는 토큰인 크레도(Credo)를 공개시장에서 판매하고 있다. 소위 ICO라고 불리는 새로운 자금모금 방식이다. 벤처기업들이 사업자금을 모으기 위해서 주식을 공매하는 대신 새로운 코인을 만들어 공개시장에서 출시하여 판매하는 행위를 IPO(Initial Public Offering)에 빗대어 ICO(Initial Coin Offering)라고 부른다. 2017년 들어서 ICO규모가 크게 성장했는데 2017년 상반기에만 10억달러를 넘어섰다. 블록체인 스타트업인 테조스(Tezos)와 이오에스(EOS)는 ICO를 통해서 각각 2억달러 이상 자금을 모았다. 7월 26일 ICO를 할 예정이던 크레도는 테조스와 이오에스에 이어 가장 큰 ICO 이벤트가 될 것이라고 언론의 관심을 모았다. 회사의 모금 목표 액은 최대 2천만불이지만 팔지 않고 회사가 보유할 코인의 가치를 고려하면 앞선 코인들보다 더 커질것으로 기대를 모았다. 실리콘벨리의 존경받는 비트코인 투자자인 팀 드레이퍼는 크레도가 공개적으로 판매되기도 전에 10%를 미리 구입했다. 암호화폐 세계에서라면 워런버펫에 버금가는 신뢰를 얻고 있는 드레이퍼의 적극적인 추천을 힘입었으니 크레도의 ICO는 성공이 보장된 셈이기도 했다. 크레도의 ICO 하루 전날 미 증권감독위원회(SEC)는 ICO가 SEC가 관할하는 미국 증권법의 규제대상이라고 밝혔다. 겉잡을 수 없이 날로 확장하는 ICO열풍을 잠재우기 위해서 크레도의 ICO 하루 전날에 SEC는 의도적으로 규제를 선언했다. \n\nSEC는 모든 토큰이 증권이라고 말하지는 않았기 때문에 업계에서는 증권처럼 인식되지 않는 토큰을 만들어서라도 ICO를 지속하려고 한다. 결국 초기 모험 사업가들과 신산업의 고삐를 움켜 쥐려는 규제 당국간의 사안별 법정공방을 통해 토큰의 증권판별 기준도 명료화 되어갈 것이다. 그러나 블록체인이 가능케한 토큰화라는 물결은 막을 수 없을 것이다. 심지어 SEC 스스로 2016년에 증권을 토큰화해서 거래하려는 오버스탁(OverStock)의 T0를 허가해 주기도 했다. 전세계 정부기구로는 최초로 ICO에 제동을 걸고 나서기는 했지만 SEC 마저도 혁신의 물결을 맨몸으로 막아서려다 휩쓸릴 생각은 없어 보인다. 거래할 수 있는 거의 모든 권리가 토큰으로 유통되는 세상이 열리고 있다.",
