Why are the same roles observed in societies, that never interact with each others societies/civilizations ?- If it is a construct rather than a biological advantage, in some practical way, there is no reason for separate groups of people, to all engage in the same 'construct'. I also ask them : 'how on earth did women fall for the argument, that earning money and paying tax, has more value than creating life, and nurturing the next generation?' I don't have many feminist friends.

bodyOne of my justifications for anarchism has been that the horrors of the twentieth century were only possible because there existed the centralized institutions of power that the ideologues could grab hold of in order to enforce their misguided ideas onto such large numbers of people who had little power to resist. The decentralisation of political power is a buffer against this kind of disaster scenario. This, at least, is a problem very worthy of consideration. But the other part of the story is that these ideologues were calling for radical changes because they over-estimated their own understanding of how society works. The great danger of the intellect, which at its best is so conducive to human flourishing, is that it tends to fall in love with its own creations (to borrow a phrase I learnt from Jordan Peterson, but which originated from the Catholic Church). That is, it creates a model of some phenomenon, and thinks that it basically has the whole story. This leads to arrogance and over-confidence, which can be extremely dangerous. So, the irony in my story is that I became so enamoured with the philosophy of libertarian anarchism, that I failed to appreciate just how little of the big picture I was seeing. Of course, I may have realised that an immediate abolition of the existent state without any kind of organized transition would be disastrous, but I did not (and still do not) understand just how deep the difficulty is. To the ordinary reader, it will not be hard to see how a naïve approach to such issues could be dangerous. An anarchistic society, properly understood, needn't be a Hobbesian nightmare of savagery and chaos, but I do think that at least chaos is the default state of affairs. One could view human history as a slow and profoundly difficult struggle, through trial and error (and often grave error), towards forms of social organization more conducive to human flourishing. Great progress has been made, as evidenced by the drastic and ongoing decline of death and misery, brought about by technological advancement as well as the improvement of political institutions (in no small part a respect of individual liberty), which we MUST NOT take for granted. As a principle, then, I believe that **one should seek to understand as well as possible why things are the way they are before calling for drastic changes - and even then, one should proceed with caution.** Even my former religious conviction, I believe, became toxic partly because of my intellectualisation and speculative theologising. In other words, it was the illusion of knowledge, for I convinced myself that I understood what I now see clearly that I did not. Having realised that, and that I may have thrown the baby out with the bathwater, I find myself dipping my toes again in that old pool (partly via Jordan Peterson's video series on the psychological significance of the Bible). ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPoDFsqyBCExAXvpQdaC8J5nGok5G36UxXVez9u4wibys/image.png) So, let me then not cast the first stone, for I myself have sinned. In light of this, I turn as just one example to the issue of feminism, and the naïve approach too many feminists take to gender, of which I have long been a critic. The problem I see is that so many feminists have abstracted gender entirely away from biological sex (when, more realistically, gender could be viewed as the social aspect of sex). Gender norms are taken to be purely social constructions; they are reduced to no more than a manifestation of patriarchal oppression. Little heed is given to the notion that gender is partly an expression of underlying biological realities, or the historical (and now significantly, but not totally diminished) necessity of specialisation, i.e. the division of labour between men and women, i.e. gender roles. I am not suggesting, of course, that we have gotten these things entirely right, or that there's no room for improvement, or adaptation, because there certainly is. My point is that there are deep reasons for these norms to be the way they are, much deeper than anyone currently understands. Thus, we should proceed with caution, and not recklessly throw out all progress that may have been made over millennia of human history, towards understanding what it means to be human, and to be male or female. Yet, modern naïve gender ideology has even passed into the education system and is being pressed onto young impressionable children. To strip children of their inheritance with regards to our cultural understanding of gender is not just a manifestation of over-confidence in ideology, but could interfere with the psychological development of those children in such a way that could have consequences more far-reaching and destructive than even the most reactionary conservatives anticipate. But the issue of gender is just one of many, and the problem is much broader than this. The problem of hubris and the limits of our knowledge extends to both sides of the political spectrum, and into many sciences (and economics). This is a general flaw in thinking, and a universal reality of the human condition, of which we must remain forever alert. Recognising the flaw in others is useful not only so that you can call them out, but also because it makes it easier to recognise the flaw in oneself, and understand its significance. I hope the reader will heed my warning.

      "body": "One of my justifications for anarchism has been that the horrors of the twentieth century were only possible because there existed the centralized institutions of power that the ideologues could grab hold of in order to enforce their misguided ideas onto such large numbers of people who had little power to resist. The decentralisation of political power is a buffer against this kind of disaster scenario. This, at least, is a problem very worthy of consideration.\n\nBut the other part of the story is that these ideologues were calling for radical changes because they over-estimated their own understanding of how society works. The great danger of the intellect, which at its best is so conducive to human flourishing, is that it tends to fall in love with its own creations (to borrow a phrase I learnt from Jordan Peterson, but which originated from the Catholic Church). That is, it creates a model of some phenomenon, and thinks that it basically has the whole story. This leads to arrogance and over-confidence, which can be extremely dangerous.\n\nSo, the irony in my story is that I became so enamoured with the philosophy of libertarian anarchism, that I failed to appreciate just how little of the big picture I was seeing. Of course, I may have realised that an immediate abolition of the existent state without any kind of organized transition would be disastrous, but I did not (and still do not) understand just how deep the difficulty is.\n\nTo the ordinary reader, it will not be hard to see how a naïve approach to such issues could be dangerous. An anarchistic society, properly understood, needn't be a Hobbesian nightmare of savagery and chaos, but I do think that at least chaos is the default state of affairs. One could view human history as a slow and profoundly difficult struggle, through trial and error (and often grave error), towards forms of social organization more conducive to human flourishing. Great progress has been made, as evidenced by the drastic and ongoing decline of death and misery, brought about by technological advancement as well as the improvement of political institutions (in no small part a respect of individual liberty), which we MUST NOT take for granted.\n\nAs a principle, then, I believe that **one should seek to understand as well as possible why things are the way they are before calling for drastic changes - and even then, one should proceed with caution.**\n\nEven my former religious conviction, I believe, became toxic partly because of my intellectualisation and speculative theologising. In other words, it was the illusion of knowledge, for I convinced myself that I understood what I now see clearly that I did not. Having realised that, and that I may have thrown the baby out with the bathwater, I find myself dipping my toes again in that old pool (partly via Jordan Peterson's video series on the psychological significance of the Bible).\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPoDFsqyBCExAXvpQdaC8J5nGok5G36UxXVez9u4wibys/image.png)\n\nSo, let me then not cast the first stone, for I myself have sinned.\n\nIn light of this, I turn as just one example to the issue of feminism, and the naïve approach too many feminists take to gender, of which I have long been a critic.\n\nThe problem I see is that so many feminists have abstracted gender entirely away from biological sex (when, more realistically, gender could be viewed as the social aspect of sex). Gender norms are taken to be purely social constructions; they are reduced to no more than a manifestation of patriarchal oppression. Little heed is given to the notion that gender is partly an expression of underlying biological realities, or the historical (and now significantly, but not totally diminished) necessity of specialisation, i.e. the division of labour between men and women, i.e. gender roles.\n\nI am not suggesting, of course, that we have gotten these things entirely right, or that there's no room for improvement, or adaptation, because there certainly is. My point is that there are deep reasons for these norms to be the way they are, much deeper than anyone currently understands. Thus, we should proceed with caution, and not recklessly throw out all progress that may have been made over millennia of human history, towards understanding what it means to be human, and to be male or female.\n\nYet, modern naïve gender ideology has even passed into the education system and is being pressed onto young impressionable children. To strip children of their inheritance with regards to our cultural understanding of gender is not just a manifestation of over-confidence in ideology, but could interfere with the psychological development of those children in such a way that could have consequences more far-reaching and destructive than even the most reactionary conservatives anticipate.\n\nBut the issue of gender is just one of many, and the problem is much broader than this. The problem of hubris and the limits of our knowledge extends to both sides of the political spectrum, and into many sciences (and economics). This is a general flaw in thinking, and a universal reality of the human condition, of which we must remain forever alert. Recognising the flaw in others is useful not only so that you can call them out, but also because it makes it easier to recognise the flaw in oneself, and understand its significance. I hope the reader will heed my warning.",

bodyWhat is most important to you? Years ago, my answer to that question was God, for I was very religious. In light of my belief system, this made sense – God should be the most important thing in my life. But what about truth – is truth less important than God? The significance of this question is that without truth, living life in service to God might be a mistake, because my belief system could be erroneous. It made some sense, in light of my belief system, to say that I should not consider such a possibility, for on the assumption that my beliefs were correct, it would surely be better for me to focus on serving God than concern myself with blasphemous questions. But, what if I were wrong? There is a great quote by Gandhi: “there is no god higher than truth”. I don’t know what he meant by this, but to me it expresses very well my point. Truth should (in general) be the highest priority, for without truth, all our efforts to do good may be in vain, or even harmful. It is reckless to devote oneself to a cause without exposing oneself to opposing arguments, and without considering the consequences of being wrong. The advocates of social justice have, to various degrees, defined ideas outside of a narrow band as evil (e.g. racist, sexist, transphobic, etc.) and therefore unworthy of consideration. This attitude has for a long time been adopted by society at large, and the band has become narrower and narrower in this time. Only recently has the process been seriously disturbed. They say that there are certain beliefs, attitudes and prejudices which pervade our society, leading to discrimination against and the disenfranchisement of certain groups: women, ethnic minorities, sexual minorities, etc. These beliefs, the actions they motivate and the resulting societal inequalities constitute systems of oppression, e.g. the patriarchy. Therefore, saying things that reinforce these attitudes is (for example) racist. If you consider the inequalities between whites and blacks in the US, with regards to incarceration say, this is said to be a result of racism, i.e. prejudice (+the power to act on it). Suppose you want to look into the underlying causes, and discover that the greater rates of incarceration are to some extent explained by greater criminality on the part of the black population. Suppose you say so. It doesn’t matter whether this is true or not, the reaction of many social justice activists and ideologues will be to dismiss your statement as racist (since it reinforces the prejudiced attitudes which result in oppression). But what if it’s true? What if this is an important part of the story? And how can we effectively address problems that we don’t properly understand? It is very fashionable these days to criticise feminists and “SJWs” on the grounds that they support the wrong kind of equality, i.e. equality of outcome, rather than equality of opportunity. For instance, men and women don’t need to be equally represented in every field of human endeavour, as long as they have equal opportunity. The response to this will be to say that outcomes would not be so unequal if there were really equal opportunities. Indeed, to say otherwise would be to claim that there are some sort of innate differences between groups that results in unequal or disproportionate representations – which is, of course, the kind of prejudiced attitude that contributes to the oppression. Thus, since discrimination must be taking place, we need to put in place programs (such as affirmative action) to correct this. They do not want to entertain the possibility that they are wrong, for as stated, this would be sexist, racist, etc. But what if they are wrong, and what if these programs are misguided, or even actively harmful? “But they’re not!” you protest, as you attempt to silence all who disagree with you. Well, not quite, you allow some disagreement, with a range, but you will never allow dissent about your most cherished and central beliefs, at the core of your ideology. I have already been through the process of having my most deeply cherished beliefs challenged and ultimately revoked. The conclusion I finally came to is beside the point – even if I had remained religious I would have learnt from the challenge. But it was a humbling experience, and I am grateful for it. I know better than to shut myself off from intellectual opposition, no matter how certain I may feel.       "body": "What is most important to you?\n\nYears ago, my answer to that question was God, for I was very religious. In light of my belief system, this made sense – God should be the most important thing in my life.\n\nBut what about truth – is truth less important than God? The significance of this question is that without truth, living life in service to God might be a mistake, because my belief system could be erroneous.\n\nIt made some sense, in light of my belief system, to say that I should not consider such a possibility, for on the assumption that my beliefs were correct, it would surely be better for me to focus on serving God than concern myself with blasphemous questions.\n\nBut, what if I were wrong?\n\nThere is a great quote by Gandhi: “there is no god higher than truth”. I don’t know what he meant by this, but to me it expresses very well my point. Truth should (in general) be the highest priority, for without truth, all our efforts to do good may be in vain, or even harmful.\n\nIt is reckless to devote oneself to a cause without exposing oneself to opposing arguments, and without considering the consequences of being wrong.\n\nThe advocates of social justice have, to various degrees, defined ideas outside of a narrow band as evil (e.g. racist, sexist, transphobic, etc.) and therefore unworthy of consideration. This attitude has for a long time been adopted by society at large, and the band has become narrower and narrower in this time. Only recently has the process been seriously disturbed.\nThey say that there are certain beliefs, attitudes and prejudices which pervade our society, leading to discrimination against and the disenfranchisement of certain groups: women, ethnic minorities, sexual minorities, etc. These beliefs, the actions they motivate and the resulting societal inequalities constitute systems of oppression, e.g. the patriarchy. \n\nTherefore, saying things that reinforce these attitudes is (for example) racist. If you consider the inequalities between whites and blacks in the US, with regards to incarceration say, this is said to be a result of racism, i.e. prejudice (+the power to act on it). Suppose you want to look into the underlying causes, and discover that the greater rates of incarceration are to some extent explained by greater criminality on the part of the black population. Suppose you say so. It doesn’t matter whether this is true or not, the reaction of many social justice activists and ideologues will be to dismiss your statement as racist (since it reinforces the prejudiced attitudes which result in oppression). \n\nBut what if it’s true? What if this is an important part of the story? And how can we effectively address problems that we don’t properly understand?\n\nIt is very fashionable these days to criticise feminists and “SJWs” on the grounds that they support the wrong kind of equality, i.e. equality of outcome, rather than equality of opportunity. For instance, men and women don’t need to be equally represented in every field of human endeavour, as long as they have equal opportunity.\n\nThe response to this will be to say that outcomes would not be so unequal if there were really equal opportunities. Indeed, to say otherwise would be to claim that there are some sort of innate differences between groups that results in unequal or disproportionate representations – which is, of course, the kind of prejudiced attitude that contributes to the oppression. Thus, since discrimination must be taking place, we need to put in place programs (such as affirmative action) to correct this.\n\nThey do not want to entertain the possibility that they are wrong, for as stated, this would be sexist, racist, etc. But what if they are wrong, and what if these programs are misguided, or even actively harmful?\n\n“But they’re not!” you protest, as you attempt to silence all who disagree with you. Well, not quite, you allow some disagreement, with a range, but you will never allow dissent about your most cherished and central beliefs, at the core of your ideology.
