My kids love these! (They even have Oregon Trail in card game form too.)\r\n<h5>Puzzles</h5>\r\nSome of our favorite Christmas vacation memory making happens with our kids around puzzle building, Lego building and board games. Here are favorites of ours in each of those categories. My kids have had both of these particular puzzles and loved them. They're giant floor puzzles, but come in a not-much-larger-than-an-ordinary-puzzle box. They are sturdy, durable and last well.\r\nThey are the perfect distraction for kids, when I'm busy making a feast or the sides or the pie I forgot to prepare.\r\n<h5>Lego</h5>\r\nAs far as Lego, can you really go wrong with any of them? I ordered the <a href=\"https://amzn.to/2RCPHRJ\">Millenium Falcon</a> for my husband last year, and his eyes were LIT up last Christmas. I got it on a Black Friday sale, and though even at it's 50% off sale price it was more than I'd ever spent on a Christmas gift for anyone ever; I don't regret it one bit. I'd saved up for it, and he was one happy man, building Legos with our kids that Christmas week.\r\n<h5>Board Games</h5>\r\n<a href=\"https://amzn.to/2PLlG4X\">Ticket to Ride</a> is a favorite board game in our house. It comes in its classic original format, but also in Germany, Africa, Old West, France, India and other themes. This is a toy I bought for my kids years ago, and wouldn't be surprised if my grandchildren someday also play with. I'm talking about preparing for a baby's arrival and BORROWING what you're in need of. That's a first, doable step in preparing for a new baby.</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>We all read the statistics of how much of a fortune a new irreplaceable little human is going to cost us, but really, what I've found, having had four such little humans, is that the thing they've cost me is a bit of sleep, but they've not cost THAT much financially.</div>\r\n</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<h2>Make a List</h2>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>\r\n<div>So let's make a list - I love lists. Lists make me feel organized, capable and maybe even IN CONTROL. And three out of my four pregnancies were not things that made me feel in control. They made me feel like my life was taking a wildly different direction than I'd been anticipating at the moment. (Doesn't matter much in this blog post on financial preparation for a baby, but I just have to add, that each child has been shatteringly exhausting as a newborn, but magical, joyful and overwhelmingly WORTH it.)</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<h2>Things That Are NEEDED For A New Baby</h2>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div><a href=\"https://amzn.to/2yP3YUo\">Diapers/wipes</a></div>\r\n<div><a href=\"https://amzn.to/2Ql0LTl\">Carseat</a></div>\r\n<div><a href=\"https://amzn.to/2Ql0LTl\">Clothing</a></div>\r\n<div>Insurance/medical care</div>\r\n<div><a href=\"https://sixonabudget.com/what-if-the-way-you-shop-for-groceries-could-change-your-life/\">Food </a></div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>The chairs, the strollers, the swings, the toys, the baby carriers, the latest and greatest WANTS can all be included in a budget as well. Remember that even those often can be borrowed or bought secondhand at thrift stores, consignment shops, on Facebook Marketplace, etc. for a fraction of their retail cost.</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>Diapers and wetwipes I have often found great deals on <a href=\"https://amzn.to/2yP3YUo\">Amazon's Subscribe and Save</a>. Also you can write to the manufacturers and request coupons and promotion details. The free <a href=\"https://www.joinhoney.com/ref/aivp4f5\">Honey app</a> can also help you find the best deals easily and quickly online.</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>Carseats often go on amazing sale around Black Friday or Cyber Monday.</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>Clothing can certainly be borrowed or bought second hand. If you want to buy brand new, don't forget to check things like RetailMeNot and remember, NOT MUCH IS NEEDED. I've had NICU babies and I've had healthy-from-the-start babies and both have needed SO MUCH LESS than others tell you they need as far as clothing and toys and STUFF go.</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>When I gave birth to our first, we were living outside the United States at the time, and I bought all things secondhand for him except the diapers and wipes. The secondhand store I frequented had more room decor geared for boys than girls and more clothing for girls than boys. We didn't know if we were having a boy or girl, and what I learned from that was the baby won't care how the room looks and as long as I had a stash of <a href=\"https://amzn.to/2Ql0LTl\">white onesies</a> and plenty of diapers and wipes, we were mostly ready for whatever the day held.</div>\r\n<div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<h2>How To Shop Responsibly For Baby</h2>\r\n<div><br class=\"gmail-Apple-interchange-newline\" />The realization that you're having a new baby can be the answer to every dream you've had or you can think it's your worst nightmare. If it's the former, you can spend, spend, spend because you're in celebration mode. Babies are each irreplaceable, unique and bring with them that often a once-in-a-life-time (or nearly) feeling which lends itself to frivolous, binge spending.</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>On the other hand, if it's the latter, it can feel like panic, stress, lack of control, life going in a direction you hadn't anticipated....all of which can trigger spending, spending, spending. BUYING something makes us often feel like we're FIXING something, like we're in control of something, and when a pregnancy makes you feel you're not in control, BUYING *stuff*, necessary or not, can make us feel more prepared, more ready, more in control. But what fuels the feeling of being out of control? Spending and the credit card bills that come inevitably from that spending.</div>\r\n</div>\r\n</div>\r\n<h2>You Can Do This!</h2>\r\n<div>\r\n<div>Maternity clothes can also be found easily secondhand or, as friends of mine do, swapped between women - one wardrobe for two women; it's worked out really well for them. Saved them a lot of money, hassle and storage. Swapping maternity clothes between moms can reduce the cost of investing money in a wardrobe that you don't need for more than 9 months at a time.</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>Financially preparing for a baby's arrival is, in my opinion, four kids into it, doable and more worth it than I ever imagined!</div>\r\n</div>\r\n<div></div>\r\n<div>No need to go into debt to prepare for a new one! When I was about 12 years old, I received a daily email with an inspiration. One day the inspiration was, \"see everything outside your front doorstep through a tourist's eyes\". I've loved that and try to keep it in mind.  (<a href=\"https://sixonabudget.com/how-to-make-a-budget/\">Here's how to get a budget started with your dreams, what matters most to you, in mind.</a>)\r\n<h2>Cash Flowed Travel</h2>\r\n(Real quick - what's cash-flowed anything? Cash flowed means something that has been saved up for and paid for entirely without charging it and without debt.)\r\n\r\nI've traveled and lived in many places in the USA and also in Japan and Argentina. Travel is something that sets my heart on fire, and I had no idea it would be even <em>more </em>fun now as a family! We recently traveled as a family of six to Rome. A beautiful, cash-flowed trip.\r\n\r\nWhen we were there, my husband and I said, how can we make this happen again sooner than later? We decided our goal was to save up the amount we'd spent on our trip to Rome and put that amount into savings for another trip PLUS we had to save an equal amount to be left in savings, we needed to max out our annual retirement contributions through my husband's work as well. We decided we'd reassess in 4 to 5 years if we were ready to go back across the pond. Try 3 MONTHS rather than 3 YEARS!\r\n<p><center><img class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-869\" src=\"https://sixonabudget.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/33381977_10155795691849576_5110456881134960640_n-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" /><br/></center></p>\r\n<center>I share this picture because it was taken in Rome, and it captures for me the sheer, intense joy of our time there.</center></p>\r\n\r\n<h2>Progress Is Possible</h2>\r\nIn three months, working hard, hustling, taking on side work, cutting back on our wants, etc. we had done exactly the above (and are on track to max out the retirement contributions this year.) No, we aren't rich; we aren't famous. We've merely analyzed our bills, tweaked our budget endlessly, and sold, sold, sold stuff where we can and tried to cut out as many wants as possible, while not dramatically tampering with our quality of life.\r\n\r\nSomething that shocked us was how little the quality of our life was affected by these changes. <a href=\"https://sixonabudget.com/reduce-7-monthly-bills-today-heres-how/\">Click here for ideas on how to cut 7 monthly bills without cutting your luxuries. </a>\r\n<h2>Frugal Travel</h2>\r\n<h3>Airline Tickets</h3>\r\nTraveling on a budget doesn't have to be drab traveling. No way! It just means making a little more effort and thinking a little outside the box. For example, we bought airline tickets through Norwegian Airlines. They are the cheapest tickets for the greatest service we've found flying to Europe. However, you have to pay separately $45 per meal per person. They welcome you bringing on your own food for free though should you prefer. So a couple nights before we flew to Italy, I went to Target and Aldi and bought up the least expensive, easy to pack, filling snacks I could find. I stuffed an entire backpack with those snacks, and we even drew from them throughout our time in Europe to supplement the items we picked up there.\r\n(I hear WOW is also a great place to search for good prices on tickets.)\r\n<h3>Discounts On Museums And Transportation Passes</h3>\r\nI did research - a lot of it to find the days that museums would be less expensive (but be careful there, because going on a Free Admission day can really knock the experience, if it's free, it's likely to be crowded), asked locals online about the best times of days and discounts ahead of time, like if I knew my kids wouldn't want to spend many hours at a certain art museum, I learned that if we went an hour before closing, admission would be 50% off.  I did transportation comparisons on passes for public transport vs. renting a car. All of this can be done with just a small bit of effort online ahead of time.\r\n\r\nAlso, if you're going to most places in Europe or the Middle East, I recommend renting from the library any and all DVDs by Rick Steves. He also has the most helpful guidebooks. We rented his materials, and ended up purchasing one of his <a href=\"https://amzn.to/2ELBosx\">pocket guide books (which included a map)</a> to bring along with us. I highly recommend that; it was really helpful!\r\n<h3>Luggage</h3>\r\nRemember when calculating the costs, that most airlines now charge for luggage. Be sure to investigate every detail of this before you travel. I contacted Norwegian Airlines Live Chat a number of times to be sure I had it just right, so we'd be charged the least possible, yet have all the luggage we needed for comfortable, convenient travel.  We used backpacks and purses and then one paid for checked piece of luggage for our family of six.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https://amzn.to/2CJ9F9b\">On Prime Day we found these for I believe $25 out of pocket. Best deal ever! They roll like a DREAM. </a> Can't wait to use them in Paris! Right now, they're still on a 70%+ off sale!\r\n<h3>Lodging</h3>\r\n<a href=\"https://www.booking.com/?aid=906594;label=wp-banner-widget-generic-906594\">Booking.com made finding and booking</a> an incredible place so easy! Let me tell you about the place we stayed. We met up with our nanny there in Rome, so we needed even more space. We found a three bedroom apartment, a giant kitchen and dining area and a massive L shaped couch. It was just a two block walk to the Vatican. Right by the metro. Convenient markets and cafes nearby. Beautiful patio. Even a washer and dryer! Can't recommend using booking.com enough. <a href=\"https://www.booking.com/?aid=906594;label=wp-banner-widget-generic-906594\">Click here - to start planning your vacation, with my referral.</a>\r\n<h3>Food</h3>\r\nFood is the biggest savings we've made (<a href=\"https://sixonabudget.com/what-if-the-way-you-shop-for-groceries-could-change-your-life/\">saving over $1000/month for food</a>), and it was also one of the simplest ways to save while traveling. I prefer to find a place with a kitchen or at least a microwave and refrigerator. I buy groceries nearby and make as many home cooked meals as possible, helping boost the budget for spending and indulging on a few really special local restaurants for the others. Though those restaurant meals are considerably more expensive than homecooked meals, they are very much a part of what I want my kids to get to experience of the new culture we're immersing ourselves in for the duration of our vacation.\r\n\r\nWe can save money by saying NO to the things we want NOW so that we can say YES to things we want MOST. For us, travel is one of those \"MOSTS.\" And it can be done! You can make the memories of a lifetime on a budget! And when it comes to a budget, especially when you're just starting out with making one, a hit by Murphy can knock your budget to the floor pretty fast. But what will help resuscitate your budget? A plan! A plan to absorb the unexpected expenses of life. We can budget with an optimistic or pessimistic mindset. But what may be best is to make a realistic budget that is flexible enough to absorb the bumps and twists of life.\r\n<h2>Where To Start Your Budget</h2>\r\nHow to START making a budget has been detailed in this post (<a href=\"https://sixonabudget.com/how-to-make-a-budget/\">click here</a>).That was Budgeting 101, and this next step is the sustaining of a budget. A budget is a living tool, meaning it needs to be tweaked and adjusted and ever-changed according to the changes that happen in our lives season to season, month to month, even week to week.\r\n<h2>Emergency Fund</h2>\r\nStudies show that 50% of Americans could not absorb an unexpected expense of $400 or more without having to sell something or having to go into debt to pay for it. THIS is why, it is so commonly recommended that you have $1000 saved up. Get that saved up as fast as possible. These 1,000 dollars should not be invested somewhere or even in a CD. This is $1000 to have available to usee in an emergency. Remember, Christmas is not an emergency. We know when that's going to happen and it happens every year.<a href=\"https://sixonabudget.com/5-ways-to-save-for-christmas-when-youre-santa-to-many/\"> (If you want tips on how to make Christmas more affordable, yet more magical than ever, click here.)</a>\r\n\r\nAfter you have the $1,000 saved up, Dave Ramsey, financial guru extraordinaire, recommends having 3-6 months of living expenses saved up as a part of that emergency fund. If something goes really wrong, you'll have a cushion while you revamp to come up with another plan.  <a href=\"https://sixonabudget.com/be-financially-prepared-today-four-questions-to-answer-first/\">To learn more about how to do exactly this, click here.</a>\r\n<h2>Unexpected Expenses</h2>\r\nWhat do these unexpected expenses look like? They don't technically, generally fall into the Emergency Fund category, because they can be planned for. The Emergency Fund is supposed to be touched only in a crisis/emergency. Unexpected expenses are for example taxes, license renewal, fines, home repairs, haircuts, veterinary care, field trip fees, fundraisers, memberships like Amazon or Sam's Club. These aren't consistent bills that show up each month. They may not even be things you think about often, but all of a sudden you got a speeding ticket, and how are you going to pay for it, for example?\r\n\r\nTHIS is where sinking funds for unexpected expenses come into play. (The term \"sinking funds\" brings nothing happy to mind for me, so I simply call them \"funds\". I know \"sinking funds\" is the commonly used term, but it does nothing to motivate me to save towards them, so I've discarded the use of it in our personal finances.)\r\n<h2>How To Be Prepared</h2>\r\nPanicking over finances and a feeling of scarcity can be behind you. You're hustling to get debt free, pursuing it with intensity and focusing on spending on needs vs. wants. BUT how do you feel secure and at ease when these unexpected bills pop up?  You make Sinking Funds. There's not too much different between savings accounts and sinking funds. You could say sinking funds are savings accounts with specific missions.\r\n\r\nIf you know you have new car tabs coming due, ask yourself how much time you have yet to save for them, and divide that total by the number of months or paychecks you have to left before it's due. Start saving that amount and setting it aside. Then when that bill comes due, you can pay it with peace of mind that you were ready for it and have saved for it.
