      "body": "![shutterstock_338000447.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcNCNNhunqwQkAoPSKqsukPCBqVeK9pto9XbyCizD7GVg/shutterstock_338000447.jpg)\n\nA lot of business owners focus on (and brag about) vanity metrics.\n\nOne of the vanity metrics that online business owners most like to talk about is email list size.\n\nHere's the thing about that...\n\nAs is true with bumping bellies, it's not the size of your list that matters, it's what you do with it that counts.\n\nOf course, there's a \"minimum acceptable size.\" But, beyond that, it's all about the results.\n\nThat's why you can be assured that most of the braggers, while talking a big game, can't get it up consistently.\n\nIf they were able to work da magic, they wouldn't rely on size talk, you know what I'm sayin'?\n\nThe people who know what they're doing with their list prefer to keep it tighter and more agile.\n\nFor example, I have an email list for my other company that has around 10,000 people on it. Except, it could easily have 50,000 people on it if I treated it differently.\n\nThe reason it doesn't have double or triple the subscribers is because I go in every quarter and delete close to 2500 people who aren't opening or clicking. I've been doing that for years.\n\nI also email very often. I started with once a week and then moved to three times a week. Now, I email almost daily (just like I do with this list).\n\nUpping the frequency encourages people who aren't thirsty for what I have to offer, to unsubscribe.\n\nFor most email lists, a \"good\" return is to earn $1 per subscriber per month directly from your email list (not counting any other channels).\n\nI earn significantly more than $1 per subscriber.\n\nThat's what I mean when I talk about performance.\n\nList size doesn't matter if your open rates suck. List size doesn't matter if your CTR (click-through rate) sucks. List size doesn't matter if your subscribers don't want what you sell. And none of that stuff matters if you can't generate sales.\n\nDo you need to be actively working on growing your email list? Absolutely. Without question.\n\nBut you should also be actively working on your technique and keeping your _bidness_ from going limp.\n\nAin't nobody getting with Gumby, okay?",

And it's why using Facebook for your core video strategy isn't a good idea (for now).\n\nHere are the two main problems...\n1. The average watch time of a Facebook video is 23 seconds.\n2. The number of views a Facebook video gets beyond the 7-day market pales in comparison to what the video initially receives.\n\nNow, some people will also say that there's a third problem – the fact that 80%ish of Facebook videos are watched with the sound off. But that's really a symptom of this other problem I'm going to tell you about.\n\nHere's how Facebook is purposefully manipulating view data...\n\n1. Facebook purposefully autoplay videos in the newsfeed.\n2. Facebook counts someone as being a viewer if they watch for 3 seconds – about the minimum time it takes for someone to interpret what's going on inside a video in the first place.\n\nThese tactics are designed to inflate the view count on Facebook videos so publishers think they're getting a lot of reach and so advertisers can be charged for more views.\n\nThe reality is that publishers like you aren't getting any relevant reach. You're being lied to.\n\nThe autoplay feature, combined with the 3-second view counter, is also why 80%ish of Facebook videos are played with the sound off.\n\nIt's not because Facebook users love watching videos they can't hear, it's because they're not actually watching them!\nTo contrast, YouTube doesn't autoplay videos and they don't count someone as a viewer until the 30-second mark. 
\n\nAlso, a YouTube video will collect as much, or more, views in the months and years following the publish date as it will in the initial week.\n\nSo, even without Facebook's shenanigans, it's terrible to build a strategy around video content that only has a 7-day shelf-life.\n\nYou're getting this, right? Facebook sucks for video.
