A video platform that grew fairly popular in the wake of YouTube's first round of self-destructive action. As YouTube began to cater to advertisers as opposed to their content creators, \"the humans\" over at vid.me launched an arguably clever little propaganda stint about being a platform supporting free speech...that sure has come around to fiercely bite them in the ass.</p>\n<p>Vid.me is like the odd, awkward weeaboo cousin of YouTube. And let's face it, YouTube isn't much of a \"friend\" as-is. Vid.me is &nbsp;likable enough. One can let them hangout for a little bit, and actually enjoy their company. But it's inevitable...the moment someone says a single critical word about them or something they like, a full snowflake fury erupts. Irrational behavior and poor decisions follow.</p>\n<p>But the elephant in the room is the hypocrisy. Flouting their statements on supporting free speech and being \"creator-friendly\", it is common to see both passive and outright censorship occurring. <strong>Common</strong> being the keyword. One of the major forms of passive censorship was <em><strong>removing and preventing</strong></em> any video \"tagged\" as political from the site's trending section. Furthermore, staffers have the capability to alter categories on whim. So if there is a message that they do not like, well, off to quarantine it goes. And if that isn't enough already, add to it that the staffers have no problem featuring a political video if it lines up with their sentiments.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://cdn.pbrd.co/images/GEPGUzw.jpg\" width=\"527\" height=\"293\"/></p>\n<p><em>Photo c/o @Preposterown (Twitter)</em></p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>I recently have seen some videos going up by select users speaking of a 50 Gigabyte storage limit. Every creator that has made one of these kind of videos has far surpassed the 50 GB limit, meaning they will have to go through their content and pick what stays and goes. Or, \"the humans\" will happily do so. And I bet we all know what videos they'll be removing...but this development got me fairly curious. Some argue that it is a cost concern. Others argue that it is selective censorship...the latter looking more likely.</p>\n<p>Selective censorship began to become more and more of a likely explanation after having seen a comment on one such video stating that vid.me is more-or-less a UI for Amazon Cloudfront; a Content Delivery Network. They also went into how much it all costs, etc. Well, the comment has vanished. Which told me there must be something to that. Either it was a little too close to truth, or it was complete rubbish. So I dug a little myself.</p>\n<p>Vid.me was founded January 17, 2014 by Warren Shaeffer and Alex Benzer. On April 7th of the following year, they &nbsp;gained an additional 3.2 million USD in private funding from nine sources, one being completely undisclosed. On December 2016, another 6 million USD was provided by seven sources. These are the only disclosed funding records.</p>\n<p>There is surprisingly little information made available about Vid.me or it's parent company BitKitchen. An article here or blog post there that serve little more than propaganda. As far as actual company information...there's virtually zilch. I did find another, and rather curious <a href=\"https://datafox.com/vidme\">financial report</a> that states a total funding of 18.4 million USD. Whether that is some sort of fluke or there's more to that report, I'm not sure yet. The source requires requests, and that takes time if the request is granted at all.</p>\n<p>So what of the claims that vid.me is little more than a UI for AWS CloudFront? That turned out to be true, at least to an extent. With a simple page inspection, one can find all the source links for various site properties, including where the video is hosted. Which is indeed on a CloudFront network domain (jargon-lingo/url_noise/blah-blah/cloudfront.net). I considered the possibility of CloudFront being used to merely \"skin\" the site page. Such as the first 10 Terabytes of data transfer out only costing 0.082 USD per gigabyte per month. That would mean that at it's most expensive, the bill would be 850 USD plus any applicable taxes. And while the end price goes up as data transfer increases, AWS offers the standard bulk discounts that most other services offer. At the most extreme level of data transfer, surpassing 5 petabytes of data out per month, the bill sums up to 20,000 USD per month plus any applicable taxes. With a monthly traffic of approximately 5.5 thousand, I don't see how infrastructure lease costs could surpass perhaps a few thousand dollars. It certainly isn't surpassing that 5 petabyte mark. So I simply cannot accept that a storage limit, especially on only select users, is a symptom of upkeep costs.</p>\n<p>I'm not knocking vid.me for using a third-party solution. It's actually pretty smart. Much cheaper than, say, owning and operating a dedicated facility. However, trying to rationalize selective limits with an excuse of costs takes a huge blow when your CEO has an estimated revenue of 1.1 million USD. Apparently your company is doing pretty well, profit-side. We've tried \"our\" best to make it seem convoluted. Perhaps to some success considering how many in the world still wrestle with the idea. And why would we intentionally add arbitrary complexities into a system?</p>\n<ol>\n  <li>The complexities added suit an agenda and it's aims.</li>\n  <li>If people can't understand something, they usually don't bother trying to.</li>\n  <li>If complex enough, people will avoid the subject altogether.</li>\n</ol>\n<p>These three factors are the foundation of a loop, really. Add complexities&gt;people don't understand them&gt;people avoid them&gt;the manufacturer(s) of said complexities have less societal dissent&gt;repeat. In other words, <em>they can get away with a lot more crap</em>. Take fractional banking for instance. The surface looks very complex and technical. That forces people away...until a few people point out it's simplicity. Then those that benefit from the workings of fractional banking (banks, other financial institutions, as well as colleges and universities that \"teach\" financial practice) need more <em>scary things </em>to turn people away again. So, they do just that by adding more requirements and rules and loopholes. But in the end, it's the same beast it was beforehand. But perhaps with some new stipulations that further benefit a select group here or there.</p>\n<p>Well, the same goes for morality. <strong>Base morality doesn't pick favorites.</strong> It doesn't benefit one group and put another at a disadvantage. Society, as a whole, is subject to base morality. So, <em>of course</em>, that can't last (sarcasm...please notice it). So the arbitrary complexities start rolling out.</p>\n<p><strong>Base morality is </strong><em><strong>constructive </strong></em><strong>versus </strong><em><strong>destructive</strong></em><strong>.</strong> That's all. There is no <em>good </em>or <em>evil</em>. Now, that doesn't give sociopaths and in-general shitheads the world over an out. They're still destructive individuals that society could happily go without...but they do serve a purpose. These radical individuals show us the condition of our society. They, in a sense, are our \"canary in the coal mine\". Since these individuals are destructive by nature, they typically latch on to destructive ideas, philosophies, etc. Thanks to these destructive individuals, the rest of us know what to avoid in our species in order to thrive and progress.</p>\n<p>The idea of good and evil may seem cut and dry. But in all actuality it is unnecessary complexity, and has <em>harmed </em>base morality. How? I'm glad I asked! Once the concepts of good and evil were introduced, it allowed for a subjective view of constructive and destructive behaviors. Example? Okay...</p>\n<p><strong>Religion.</strong></p>\n<p>How many things can you look at that religions around the world say are <em>good</em>, that are actually quite destructive? <code><strong>Exactly</strong></code>. Murder, torture, mutilation, oppression, suppression...religions are rife with self-justified destructive behavior. Self-justified I say? <em>Yes</em>. <strong>Religion isn't exclusive in this.</strong> Philosophies, political movements, governance systems, economic systems, and obviously societal systems themselves all have their own <em>good and evil</em> paradigms. Religions have taken it a step further, however. Many claiming that their respective deities are<strong> the source</strong> of morality. And there's your ultimate example of arbitrary complexity, and quite an effective stop-gap of questioning motive.</p>\n<p>Even with that said, I can't say that these same things haven't embraced constructive behavior reinforcements. However, the volume of <em>constructive reinforcement</em> in comparison to the volume of <em>destructive reinforcement </em>is troubling.</p>\n<p><em>\"You said </em><code>[insert religious ideology]</code><em> is just making up that </em><code>[insert deity]</code><em> is the source of morality. If that isn't the case, smart guy, what is the source?!\"</em></p>\n<p>We are. The human species, that is. What we call morality is akin to a survival instinct. Thus why it is malleable...exploitable. As a species, we have observed what benefits and what hinders our progression and sustainability. These are the constructive and destructive behaviors I spoke of. However, due to the action/reaction nature of this \"instinct\", it can be manipulated. And the means to implement such manipulation is to convince an individual that their survival and/or well-being depends on whatever perversion of base morality it may be. Whether it is taking lives in the name of a deity or oppressing a society to serve a philosophical agenda (<em>cough </em><code>post-modernism</code>).</p>\n<p>So, morality isn't that complex. It boils down to constructive versus destructive behavior, in every argument. The behavior, idea, or action may have several layers, but you can cut right through them when you knock off <em>good and evil</em> subjective context. And you can better protect yourself from destructive influences when you can see them for what they are.</p>\n<p>While I haven't figured out everything on morality, I do believe I am on the right track. I haven't really gone into how we determine what is constructive and what is destructive. I figure that is pretty obvious once the context is presented. But, if that is something people are curious about (at least what I've came to with it), or have their own idea on, feel free to voice it...or, uh...type it...</p>\n</html>",
