| title | Ethnic Attack on Indigenous Culture: Manchester Students paint over Rudyard Kipling masterpiece ‘If’ and replace it with black Civil Rights rhyme |
| body | In another example of the lunatics having taken over the asylum or perhaps Planet of the Apes becoming more of a reality by the day, students at Manchester University have painted over the inspirational poem “If” by revered English poet Rudyard Kipling and replaced it with “Still I Rise” by American civil rights activist Maya Angelou. Ethnic Attack The fact that Kipling was a white male and Angelou was a black female is clearly more important than the content of the pieces. Despite the poem not mentioning race, the students accused Kipling of being a “racist”, claiming that “Black and brown voices have been written out of history enough”. It’s also significant that the three spokespeople for the students all had foreign names. Welfare officer Deej Malik-Johnson told the press: ‘On Friday, we noticed an artist had painted a Rudyard Kipling poem in the students’ union. This was done without our consultation or approval. ‘This was especially problematic given the poet’s imperialistic and racist work such as The White Man’s Burden, where Kipling explains how it is the responsibility of white men to “civilise” black and Asian people through colonialism. ‘We decided to paint over that poem and replace it with Still I Rise by Maya Angelou, a poem about resilience and overcoming our history by a brilliant black woman.’ On Facebook, Liberation and Access Officer at the University of Manchester Students Union Sara Khan, wrote: ‘A failure to consult students during the process of adding art to the newly renovated SU building resulted in Rudyard Kipling’s work being painted on the first floor last week. ‘We, as an exec team, believe that Kipling stands for the opposite of liberation, empowerment, and human rights – the things that we, as an SU, stand for. ‘Well-known as author of the racist poem ‘The White Man’s Burden’, and a plethora of other work that sought to legitimate the British Empire’s presence in India and de-humanise people of colour, it is deeply inappropriate to promote the work of Kipling in our SU, which is named after prominent South African anti-Apartheid activist, Steve Biko.’ Fatima Abid, the general secretary of Manchester’s SU, added on Twitter: ‘Today, as a team we removed an imperialist’s work from the walls of our union and replaced them with the words of Maya Angelou- God knows black and brown voices have been written out of history enough, and it’s time we try to reverse that, at the very least in our union.’ Cucked Authorities Typically, the authorities folded at student pressure and a spokesman said the following: ‘We understand that we made a mistake in our approach to a recent piece of artwork by failing to garner student opinion at the start of a new project. We accept that the result was inappropriate and for that we apologise.’ He added that the union would make changes to ‘guarantee that student voices are heard and considered properly’ so that ‘every outcome is representative of our membership’. ‘We’re working closely with the union’s elected officers to learn all we can from this situation and are looking forward to introducing powerful, relevant and meaningful art installations across the students’ union building over the coming months,’. Reality The truth is that Kipling, who was born in India in 1865, was a product of his time and had a deep affinity with India and was often affectionate towards the Indian subjects of his work. Henry James said of him: “Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I have ever known.” In 1907, at the age of 42, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize and its youngest recipient to date. In response to the controversy Rana Mitter, professor of the history and politics of modern China at Oxford University, who has a Bengali family background, described Kipling as ‘very respectful of India as a culture and society’. He said: ‘Kipling understood India better than his British contemporaries. If you read a poem like Gunga Din you’ll see that it isn’t contemptuous of India at all, but is respectful. ‘However, Kipling was a product of late-Victorian Britain and had prejudices that were commonplace at that time.’ In the light of the way European societies are being changed by the presence of Third World minorities, I’d say they were justified but I’ll discuss this issue in greater depth later in the article. The point is that the Kipling poem, which was written in 1895 for his son John, was in the Students’ Union building in order to inspire students and staff and is repeatedly voted the nation’s favourite. It’s not difficult to see why. ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or, being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream—and not make dreams your master; If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son! Respective Merits It’s not that Maya Angelou is uninteresting or untalented. In fact, she was a singer, dancer, journalist, poet and author, who travelled widely and I believe even worked as a prostitute early on in order to escape poverty. However, the reason that her poem was chosen to replace Kipling’s is because of what the two writers represent rather than because of the artistic merits of the work. I personally believe that as a piece of literature “If” is vastly superior to “Still I Rise” and I hazard a guess that most serious unbiased literary critics would agree with me. ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I’ll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard ’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I’ve got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise. Cultural Vandalism As Chris McGovern, of the Campaign for Real Education, said in response to the Manchester Students’ act of replacing Kipling’s masterpiece with Angelou’s rhyme: ‘This is outrageous cultural vandalism. Kipling is a much beloved poet. ‘These students are closing off access to one of our most popular poems and it is Liberal Fascism. ‘They are snowflakes who should not be indulged. Forcing your views on other people should have no place in British society.’ It is clearly wrong for students to try to censor the past. They should instead view writers and figures in their historical context but herein lies the problem of a multiracial society. Even if you pay lip service to the idea that immigrants should integrate ultimately they will want vindicate their own cultural heritage at the expense of the host culture, which they see as an oppressive competitor. Not an Isolated Case This is not the first time students have decided to take action against a historical figure they deem offensive. There have been many examples. At Oxford University, students protested against the Victorian imperialist Cecil Rhodes in the conveniently named ‘Rhodes Must Fall’ protest and organised a ‘Mass March for Decolonisation’ in the city, taking exception to the presence of a statue of Cecil Rhodes. Demonstrators chanted ‘tear it down’ and ‘Rhodes must fall’ and argued that the mining magnate was racist. In another incident in January a number of people stormed a Churchill-themed cafe. Led by members of London’s School of African Studies (SOAS), the protesters claimed Winston Churchill was a ‘colonialist’ and also a ‘racist’. In October last year Cambridge University Student Union’s women’s officer Lola Olufemi penned an open letter titled ‘Decolonising the English Faculty’. The letter, signed by around 150 university students, said: ‘For too long, teaching English at Cambridge has encouraged a ‘traditional’ and ‘canonical’ approach that elevates white male authors at the expense of all others. ‘What we can no longer ignore, however, is the fact that the curriculum, taken as a whole, risks perpetuating institutional racism.’ Campaigners at a numerous universities have now argued that some teaching excludes female authors and people from an ethnic minority background. The Chimera of Civic Nationalism The Manchester incident and the cases above underline that a civic nationalism based on integration and acceptance of “British values” is a chimera. In part, this is because British values are impossible to define or distinguish from the values of tolerance and diversity in any other Western country. In recent history, there can be few people who epitomise bulldog Britishness more clearly than Winston Churchill, for the majority of Civic Nationalist at least. If ethnic minorities can successfully topple Churchill from his plynth then nothing is sacred. The Manchester incident has to be understood as an ethnic attack on indigenous British culture. You can tell from their names and the skin colour of the leaders that they are not British and have no intention of integrating. Aided and abetted by brainwashed white leftists, the effect of their presence is to change British culture itself. Their objective is to tear British culture down and replace it with something of their own making. They must not be allowed to succeed. |

This was done without our consultation or approval.\n\n‘This was especially problematic given the poet’s imperialistic and racist work such as The White Man’s Burden, where Kipling explains how it is the responsibility of white men to “civilise” black and Asian people through colonialism.\n\n‘We decided to paint over that poem and replace it with Still I Rise by Maya Angelou, a poem about resilience and overcoming our history by a brilliant black woman.’\n\nOn Facebook, Liberation and Access Officer at the University of Manchester Students Union Sara Khan, wrote:\n\n‘A failure to consult students during the process of adding art to the newly renovated SU building resulted in Rudyard Kipling’s work being painted on the first floor last week.\n\n‘We, as an exec team, believe that Kipling stands for the opposite of liberation, empowerment, and human rights – the things that we, as an SU, stand for.\n\n‘Well-known as author of the racist poem ‘The White Man’s Burden’, and a plethora of other work that sought to legitimate the British Empire’s presence in India and de-humanise people of colour, it is deeply inappropriate to promote the work of Kipling in our SU, which is named after prominent South African anti-Apartheid activist, Steve Biko.’\n\nFatima Abid, the general secretary of Manchester’s SU, added on Twitter:\n\n‘Today, as a team we removed an imperialist’s work from the walls of our union and replaced them with the words of Maya Angelou- God knows black and brown voices have been written out of history enough, and it’s time we try to reverse that, at the very least in our union.’\n\nCucked Authorities\nTypically, the authorities folded at student pressure and a spokesman said the following:\n\n‘We understand that we made a mistake in our approach to a recent piece of artwork by failing to garner student opinion at the start of a new project. We accept that the result was inappropriate and for that we apologise.’\n\nHe added that the union would make changes to ‘guarantee that student voices are heard and considered properly’ so that ‘every outcome is representative of our membership’.\n\n‘We’re working closely with the union’s elected officers to learn all we can from this situation and are looking forward to introducing powerful, relevant and meaningful art installations across the students’ union building over the coming months,’.\n\nReality\nThe truth is that Kipling, who was born in India in 1865, was a product of his time and had a deep affinity with India and was often affectionate towards the Indian subjects of his work.\n\nHenry James said of him: “Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I have ever known.” In 1907, at the age of 42, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize and its youngest recipient to date.\n\nIn response to the controversy Rana Mitter, professor of the history and politics of modern China at Oxford University, who has a Bengali family background, described Kipling as ‘very respectful of India as a culture and society’.\n\nHe said: ‘Kipling understood India better than his British contemporaries. If you read a poem like Gunga Din you’ll see that it isn’t contemptuous of India at all, but is respectful.\n\n‘However, Kipling was a product of late-Victorian Britain and had prejudices that were commonplace at that time.’ In the light of the way European societies are being changed by the presence of Third World minorities, I’d say they were justified but I’ll discuss this issue in greater depth later in the article.\n\nThe point is that the Kipling poem, which was written in 1895 for his son John, was in the Students’ Union building in order to inspire students and staff and is repeatedly voted the nation’s favourite. It’s not difficult to see why.\n\n‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling\nIf you can keep your head when all about you\nAre losing theirs and blaming it on you,\nIf you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,\nBut make allowance for their doubting too;\nIf you can wait and not be tired by waiting,\nOr, being lied about, don’t deal in lies,\nOr, being hated, don’t give way to hating,\nAnd yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:\n\nIf you can dream—and not make dreams your master;\nIf you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;\nIf you can meet with Triumph and Disaster\nAnd treat those two impostors just the same;\nIf you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken\nTwisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,\nOr watch the things you gave your life to, broken,\nAnd stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:\n\nIf you can make one heap of all your winnings\nAnd risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,\nAnd lose, and start again at your beginnings\nAnd never breathe a word about your loss;\nIf you can force your heart and nerve and sinew\nTo serve your turn long after they are gone,\nAnd so hold on when there is nothing in you\nExcept the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’\n\nIf you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,\nOr walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,\nIf neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,\nIf all men count with you, but none too much;\nIf you can fill the unforgiving minute\nWith sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,\nYours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,\nAnd—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!\n\nRespective Merits\nIt’s not that Maya Angelou is uninteresting or untalented. In fact, she was a singer, dancer, journalist, poet and author, who travelled widely and I believe even worked as a prostitute early on in order to escape poverty. However, the reason that her poem was chosen to replace Kipling’s is because of what the two writers represent rather than because of the artistic merits of the work.\n\nI personally believe that as a piece of literature “If” is vastly superior to “Still I Rise” and I hazard a guess that most serious unbiased literary critics would agree with me.\n\n‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou\nYou may write me down in history\nWith your bitter, twisted lies,\nYou may trod me in the very dirt\nBut still, like dust, I’ll rise.\n\nDoes my sassiness upset you?\nWhy are you beset with gloom?\n’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells\nPumping in my living room.\n\nJust like moons and like suns,\nWith the certainty of tides,\nJust like hopes springing high,\nStill I’ll rise.\n\nDid you want to see me broken?\nBowed head and lowered eyes?\nShoulders falling down like teardrops,\nWeakened by my soulful cries?\n\nDoes my haughtiness offend you?\nDon’t you take it awful hard\n’Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines\nDiggin’ in my own backyard.\n\nYou may shoot me with your words,\nYou may cut me with your eyes,\nYou may kill me with your hatefulness,\nBut still, like air, I’ll rise.\n\nDoes my sexiness upset you?\nDoes it come as a surprise\nThat I dance like I’ve got diamonds\nAt the meeting of my thighs?\n\nOut of the huts of history’s shame\nI rise\nUp from a past that’s rooted in pain\nI rise\nI’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,\nWelling and swelling I bear in the tide.\n\nLeaving behind nights of terror and fear\nI rise\nInto a daybreak that’s wondrously clear\nI rise\nBringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,\nI am the dream and the hope of the slave.\nI rise\nI rise\nI rise.\n\nCultural Vandalism\nAs Chris McGovern, of the Campaign for Real Education, said in response to the Manchester Students’ act of replacing Kipling’s masterpiece with Angelou’s rhyme:\n\n‘This is outrageous cultural vandalism. Kipling is a much beloved poet.\n\n‘These students are closing off access to one of our most popular poems and it is Liberal Fascism.\n\n‘They are snowflakes who should not be indulged. Forcing your views on other people should have no place in British society.’\n\nIt is clearly wrong for students to try to censor the past. They should instead view writers and figures in their historical context but herein lies the problem of a multiracial society. Even if you pay lip service to the idea that immigrants should integrate ultimately they will want vindicate their own cultural heritage at the expense of the host culture, which they see as an oppressive competitor.\n\nNot an Isolated Case\nThis is not the first time students have decided to take action against a historical figure they deem offensive. There have been many examples.\n\nAt Oxford University, students protested against the Victorian imperialist Cecil Rhodes in the conveniently named ‘Rhodes Must Fall’ protest and organised a ‘Mass March for Decolonisation’ in the city, taking exception to the presence of a statue of Cecil Rhodes. Demonstrators chanted ‘tear it down’ and ‘Rhodes must fall’ and argued that the mining magnate was racist.\n\nIn another incident in January a number of people stormed a Churchill-themed cafe. Led by members of London’s School of African Studies (SOAS), the protesters claimed Winston Churchill was a ‘colonialist’ and also a ‘racist’.\n\nIn October last year Cambridge University Student Union’s women’s officer Lola Olufemi penned an open letter titled ‘Decolonising the English Faculty’. The letter, signed by around 150 university students, said: ‘For too long, teaching English at Cambridge has encouraged a ‘traditional’ and ‘canonical’ approach that elevates white male authors at the expense of all others. ‘What we can no longer ignore, however, is the fact that the curriculum, taken as a whole, risks perpetuating institutional racism.’\n\nCampaigners at a numerous universities have now argued that some teaching excludes female authors and people from an ethnic minority background.\n\nThe Chimera of Civic Nationalism\nThe Manchester incident and the cases above underline that a civic nationalism based on integration and acceptance of “British values” is a chimera. In part, this is because British values are impossible to define or distinguish from the values of tolerance and diversity in any other Western country.\n\nIn recent history, there can be few people who epitomise bulldog Britishness more clearly than Winston Churchill, for the majority of Civic Nationalist at least. If ethnic minorities can successfully topple Churchill from his plynth then nothing is sacred.\n\nThe Manchester incident has to be understood as an ethnic attack on indigenous British culture. You can tell from their names and the skin colour of the leaders that they are not British and have no intention of integrating.\n\nAided and abetted by brainwashed white leftists, the effect of their presence is to change British culture itself. Their objective is to tear British culture down and replace it with something of their own making. They must not be allowed to succeed.",
