bodyApril 26, 2018 | MKS After much debate Tennessee lawmakers finally came to an agreement regarding the legality kratom. The issue of kratom came came to light on December 20, 2017, when the Tennessee State Attorney General issued his official court-ordered opinion regarding interpretation of the law. This opinion states “Possession of the kratom plant in its natural botanical form should not subject a person to potential criminal prosecution under Tennessee law. The kratom plant in its natural botanical form is not a prohibited controlled substance under Tennessee law.” This statement finally put to rest any question about the legality of kratom in the state of Tennessee...until the issue re-appeared in January of 2018.
Section House Bill 1832 (SB2258) was introduced with the goal of banning kratom altogether.
After months of squabbling on the senate floor, an overwhelming vote of 86 to 2 in favor of keeping kratom legal to adults 21 and over, only in it's natural form - with the added requirement that the packaging shows a warning label. If you would like to see what happened on the senate floor, I've included a couple videos. The first video shows arguments from both sides, and shines a bright light on the bad science the FDA used to come to their conclusion that kratom is a "dangerous opioid" http://tnga.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=354&clip_id=15188&meta_id=356452 The following video shows the final vote on the matter: http://tnga.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=354&clip_id=15235&meta_id=360468 A major part of this win comes from the hard work from kratom advocate groups, and the response from the kratom community. bodyApril 22, 2018 MKS NEWS What does the future hold for kratom in the U.S.? Right now, it seems like the issue has come to a stalemate between federal agencies pushing for a ban, and the millions of people attesting to kratom's positive medicinal properties. When asked, kratom users praise it's medicinal qualities, providing a natural alternative for potentially dangerous prescription drugs for relief of anxiety, depression, pain, and opiate withdrawal. However, some high-ranking government officials argue that kratom is a deadly opioid, and is as dangerous and addictive as heroin. In February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that kratom has "opioid properties" and claimed it had been associated with 44 deaths between April 2011 and December 2017. FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb's statement claimed that the agency used scientific research and computational modeling technology to conclude that kratom has "potential for abuse, addiction and serious health consequences, including death." Further claiming that one case of death showed no "historical or toxicological evidence of opioid use, except for kratom." After Gottlieb's public statement vilifying kratom, nine addictive behavior scientists sent a letter to DEA Acting Administrator Robert W. Patterson, stating that the FDA's conclusion was wrong in connecting kratom and opioids and there remains no proof that kratom alone caused any deaths. Dave Herman, Chairman of the nonprofit American Kratom Association,, states"The 44 deaths are not attributable to kratom," adding that an estimated 3 to 5 million people in the U.S. have used the supplement. "The FDA is saying people died and they found kratom in their system. It's like if I drank a Coke and got hit by a truck. There's not even one death from kratom." The FDA's recent criticism of kratom has caused a few members of Congress to speak out in favor of its use to treat opioid addiction. In his report, Gottlieb said that kratom is not an FDA-approved supplement, a message regurgitated from apublic health warning last November when he linked kratom to 36 deaths and rejected it's positive use for opioid withdrawal. Just a month later, Jared Polis, a Democratic congressman from Colorado, signed a bipartisan letter asking Gottlieb to rescind this absurd health warning on kratom, citing that the "beneficial potential, safety, and efficacy of kratom has been discussed, studied, clinically researched, and found to be as safe as coffee" according to studies funded by the National Institutes of Health. In 1012 the FDA put kratom on an "import alert" for unapproved drugs. Since kratom is a natural botanical, the agency can only restrict its sale if it is proven to be dangerous, or is marketed as a medical treatment. Without definitive proof that kratom is dangerous, the agency proceeded to temporarily label it as a "suspicious substance", banning imports into the U.S. in 2014, and seizing 25,000 pounds in Los Angeles. Fast forward to 2016; the had plans to place the "active materials" in kratom (the alkaloids mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine) into the Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act to "avoid an imminent hazard to public safety." This proposed scheduling was met with considerable opposition from advocates, and the withdrew its efforts,s, and proceeded to ask the FDA to conduct medical and scientific evaluations. The FDA continues to desperately cling to its belief that kratom is dangerous, partly because of a computational model that uses the Public Health Assessment via Structural Evaluation (PHASE) method (PHASE) method. This method uses 3-D technology to simulate the effect of a chemical at the molecular level in the body and brain. Using the data from their PHASE model, they claim that kratom alkaloids are predicted to have the same effect as opioids - allowing the claim that kratom is a dangerous opioid, and furthering the idea that it should be put on the controlled substance list. The information reported to the FDA regarding the deaths involving kratom is limited. Many cases concluded "could not be fully assessed" because of lacking information. The "few assessable cases" show kratom was combined with prescription opioids, benzodiazepines and other otc medications. Dave Herman, of the American Kratom Association (AKA), is frustrated by the FDA's claims. "Kratom is not an opioid," Herman says. "The FDA just needs a victory in the 'War on Opioids' and we have been deemed a part of that. But we we should be part of the solution." Former National Institute on Drug Abuse addiction expert, Jack E. Henningfield, now works for the health consulting group Pinney Associates and contracts with the AKA. He believes that the conclusions made from the scientific studies managed by federal agencies are wrong. Henningfield believes that Dr. Gottlieb isn't being well advised, as the FDA has not provided evidence from human clinical trials or laboratory studies that prove kratom mimics the 'narcotic-like opioids' that lead to addiction or death. Henningfield, along with millions of advocates, see potential in kratom to help relieve opioid addiction and believe banning the herbal botanical would create a black market trade without any federal regulation. While the PHASE method used by pharmaceutical companies can estimate receptor binding qualities, the data doesn't support the actual effects of the substances. For example, two FDA-approved over-the-counter medicines: Imodium (for diarrhea) and dextromethorphan (in cough suppressants) bind to the body's opiate receptors like the deadly drugs heroin and fentanyl. However, these substances vary widely regarding the risk of addiction or death. On Feb. 26, 2018, Gottlieb made another public declaration, reiterating that "kratom is not a safe, benign plant" and that vendors should not be misleading people into using it as a remedy to relieve pain or opioid addiction. "On the contrary, we have concerns that for some, kratom can become a gateway to continued addiction to opioids; or prevent some people from seeking safe and effective treatment for their addiction," Gottlieb said. The FDA claims to continue to review research and other literature about kratom, but there seems to be no available research to date that has changed its opinion that this natural substance is dangerous enough to require adding it to the list of schedule 1 drugs. Following the FDA's lead, the DEA has listed it as a "drug of concern", and kratom advocates and organizations like the AKA continue to work towards protecting our right as American citizens to use kratom, a natural botanical.
What are your thoughts about kratom? Share your story.

The report concluded: “A review of available law enforcement and laboratory sources in Florida demonstrates that Kratom does not currently constitute a significant risk to the safety and welfare of Florida residents. According to the Florida Department of Health (DOH), no pervasive health issues have been attributed to the ingestion of Kratom products in Florida. Diagnostic tests that would reveal the presence of Mitragynine are not routinely performed on patients during emergency room visits. Therefore, arriving at the precise number of Mitragynine exposures that result in harm to the patient is difficult to assess.” The Florida Department of Law Enforcement report is yet another example that follows countless medical and education professionals who support Kratom For example, Alan Bloom, a member of Wisconsin’s Controlled Substances Board and a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, stated “There’s no scientific basis for classifying Kratom as a dangerous drug.” And Jack Henningfield, Ph.D., Professor of Behavioral Biology, The John Hopkins University, who testified, “[Kratom] consumption does not interfere with work or social activities and commitments, and in fact are widely reported in the U.S., as in Southeast Asia, to contribute to work productivity, quality of life, and social relationships.” In the wake of the recent statement about kratom released by the F D A, more documents like this are surfacing, calling into question the motive for these scare tactics. Reports, like the 2015 Florida document, can serve as an example for legislators to refer to when contacting them about pending kratom legislation. What can you do? Stay informed. Diagnostic tests that would reveal the presence of Mitragynine are not routinely performed on patients during emergency room visits. Therefore, arriving at the precise number of Mitragynine exposures that result in harm to the patient is difficult to assess.”\n\nThe Florida Department of Law Enforcement report is yet another example that follows countless medical and education professionals who support Kratom For example, Alan Bloom, a member of Wisconsin’s Controlled Substances Board and a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, stated “There’s no scientific basis for classifying Kratom as a dangerous drug.” And Jack Henningfield, Ph.D., Professor of Behavioral Biology, The John Hopkins University, who testified, “[Kratom] consumption does not interfere with work or social activities and commitments, and in fact are widely reported in the U.S., as in Southeast Asia, to contribute to work productivity, quality of life, and social relationships.”\n\nIn the wake of the recent statement about kratom released by the F D A, more documents like this are surfacing, calling into question the motive for these scare tactics.\n\nReports, like the 2015 Florida document, can serve as an example for legislators to refer to when contacting them about pending kratom legislation.\n\nWhat can you do? \nStay informed. bodyYet another municipality has rallied to ban kratom after the recent smear campaign by the F D A. Alton City Council members passed a new ordinance Wednesday banning the possession and sale of kratom. Police Chief Jake Simmons testified in favor of the ordinance, stating that “It is a very dangerous substance,” Simmons said. “That is why we have banned its sale in Alton, and we encourage other areas around here to do the same thing.” Simmons goes on to erroneously compare kratom to bath salts, citing the immediate need for a ban. The ordinance: Title 7 Chapter 15 Kratom Prohibited 7-15-1: PURPOSES: This chapter is enacted to protect, preserve and promote the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the City of Alton by prohibiting the possession, distribution or delivery of any substance containing Kratom as hereinafter defined, it being the specific finding of the City of Alton that such substances have a dangerous effect upon anyone using said substances and have no practical medicinal or beneficial purposes. 7-15-2: DEFINITIONS: When used in this chapter, the following words have the meanings as hereinafter provided; DELIVER: the actual, constructive, or attempted transfer from one person to another of Kratom, whether or not there is an agency relationship, and includes a sale; DISTRIBUTE: to deliver other than by administering or dispensing Kratom; KRATOM: includes any product, material, compound, mixture or preparation containing any quantity of the following substances having a stimulant effect on the central nervous system, 7-Hydroxymitragynine, Mitragynine, and Epicatechin; POSSESS: means with the knowledge of the presence and nature of a substance, either actually or constructively to be in control of a substance. A person has actual possession if he has the substance on his person or within easy reach and convenient control. A person who, although not in actual possession, has the power and intention at a given time to exercise dominion or control over the substance either directly or through another person or persons is in constructive possession of it. 7-15-3: GENERAL PROHIBITION: It shall be unlawful for any person to possess, distribute or deliver any substance containing Kratom as defined in this chapter. WHAT CAN YOU DO? If you are a resident of Alton, please take a moment to contact the Mayor, City Councilors, and Police Chief Simmons to let them know kratom is not bath salts, and that they should seriously consider educating themselves further on the benefits that kratom can provide for residents in Alton. It might also be worth sending over some resources, like the Florida Department of Law Enforcement – Official Statewide Intelligence Drug Report on Kratom. Excerpt of conclusion of this report: “A review of available law enforcement and laboratory sources in Florida demonstrates that Kratom does not currently constitute a significant risk to the safety and welfare of Florida residents. According to the Florida Department of Health (DOH), no pervasive health issues have been attributed to the ingestion of Kratom products in Florida. Diagnostic tests that would reveal the presence of Mitragynine are not routinely performed on patients during emergency room visits. Therefore, arriving at the precise number of Mitragynine exposures that result in harm to the patient is difficult to assess.” Other Council members you can contact: Mayor Brant Walker – 618.463.3500 Alderman Ward 1: Brian Campbell – 618.223.0735 Alderman Ward 2: Carolyn MacAfee – 618.465.0859 Alderman Ward 3: Michael Velloff – 618.208.7010 Alderman Ward 4: Tammy Smit – 618.975.9020 Alderman Ward 5: Charles Brake – 618.462.7253 Alderman Ward 6: Stephanie Elliott – 618.462.8150 Alderman Ward 7: David Bould – 618.465.8002

bodyOn March 13, 2018, the Seminole City Council unanimously voted in favor of adding the natural botanicals kratom and kava, to the proposed ordinance that would ban synthetic drugs. A second reading of the bill will be held at a future council meeting. ![Seminole.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSAb5w83zj1HoGgTbkjKjrCn7k7PcY9izmbvYFxSJYBUD/Seminole.jpg) Image source: City of Seminole This proposed ordinance follows the at council’s annual retreat held on January, where recorded minutes show the council discussed regulation of kratom. While researching the proposed ordinance prior to drafting it, City Attorney Jay Daigneault determined a more comprehensive ordinance adding synthetic cannabinoid, contraband bath salts, and two natural botanicals (kratom and kava) to the list of substances to be banned was preferable. During the March 13 meeting, Daigneault said there is no research indicating “what the long-term and short-term effects (of kratom and kava) are.” and “we don’t know what they’re going to do”. He also said that though he can’t say banning these substances “is a widespread trend in municipal government,” one Florida municipality has – the county of Sarasota. Councilor Chris Burke, of the Largo Police Department, requested that Daigneault specifically add spice (a mix of herbs and synthetic materials) to the bill, concluding it wouldn’t fall under the ordinance the way it is currently defined. He added that spice “causes the most danger for law enforcement.” Further stating that spice causes “excited delerium” and a “euphoric high” and ” when dealing with someone that’s on spice, it’s a fight that takes many officers to subdue one person” Daigneault said he would add spice to the bill ahead of its second reading and vote by the council.

bodyWhile Tennessee, Minnesota, and Kansas have had recent success to keep kratom legal, a storm is brewing over the entire country regarding the legality of kratom on the federal level. This has triggered a country-wide response from the kratom community. On March 15, 2018, U.S. Representatives Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN) and Thomas Suozzi (D-NY) introduced HR5298, or, the "Modernizing Drug Enforcement Act of 2018" – To amend the Controlled Substances Act to deem drugs or other substances that act as opioid mu receptor agonists to be in schedule I, subject to exceptions for substances intended for legitimate medical or research use, and for other purposes. Read that last sentence again... subject to exceptions for substances intended for legitimate medical or research use, and for other purposes. Exactly what does that mean? The language is clear: Make it illegal for citizens by pre-emptively classifying kratom as schedule I narcotic, but allow pharmaceutical companies to develop synthesized, patented alkaloids to make marketable prescription drugs approved by the FDA. The proposed Modernizing Drug Enforcement Act of 2018 reads: ‘‘(2) EXCEPTIONS.—A chemical substance is exempt from inclusion in schedule I by operation of paragraph (1) if the substance— ‘‘(A) is the subject of an approved application submitted under subsection (b) or (j) of section 505 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act; ‘‘(B) is exempt from the provisions of section 505 of such Act relating to new drugs because— ‘‘(i) the substance is intended solely for investigational use as described in section 505(i) of such Act; and ‘‘(ii) the substance is being used exclusively for purposes of a clinical trial that is the subject of an effective investigational new drug application; or ‘‘(C) is the subject of a nonclinical drug investigation by experts qualified by scientific training and experience to investigate the safety and effectiveness of drugs." Three synthetic opioids synthesized from the alkaloids in kratom already exist: MGM-9, MGM-15, and MGM-16. They were synthesized from kratom’s alkaloids Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine: to make what is essentially patentable, pharmaceutical kratom. The first study, published in 2008, took Mitragynine and used it to synthesize “MGM-9”. The second study, published in 2014 synthesized MGM-15 and MGM-16 from kratom’s other primary alkaloid, 7-Hydroxymitragynine. Compare this to Cannabis; it is classified federally as a schedule 1 substance. However, the pharmaceutical industry can manufacture a profitable synthetic version of THC (the same active ingredient in cannabis) and make it legal. Yet another example is Speciofolin, a kratom alkaloid. On August 10, 1964, a patent was filed for Speciofoline by the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline LLC. The patent claims the “alkaloid has useful pharmacodynamic activity, particularly analgetic and antitussive activity.” Te list continues with the patent application US20100209542A1, for University Of Massachusetts Medical School, University Of Mississippi in 2010. The application recognizes kratom as a treatment for opioid withdrawal, and goes on to claim that kratom could be used to help withdrawals from other drugs as well. The Rx pain medication epidemic is sweeping across the nation, killing thousands every year and converting many of its abusers into heroin addicts, the pharmaceutical companies are scrambling to find a -profitable- alternative. Kratom should be that alternative. However, since kratom is a plant, pharmaceutical companies can’t monopolize it — unless it is made illegal countrywide. As of March 21, 2018, kratom is still legal in most of the U.S.. If HR5298 is passed, kratom will be illegal in America, but the synthetic, patented, versions of kratom that Pharmaceutical Giants own will become readily available. And profitable. With the full support of Uncle Sam. More often than not, the drugs themselves, and the people that abuse them are blamed for this opioid crisis that is crippling our country. Not the giant Pharmaceutical corporations. Not Pharmaceutical lobbyists pushing to keep dangerous Rx drugs on the market. And certainly not our own government. How many more lives need to be ruined? How many more people have to die from overdose? The people of this great country deserve to be treated better than this. "body": "While Tennessee, Minnesota, and Kansas have had recent success to keep kratom legal, a storm is brewing over the entire country regarding the legality of kratom on the federal level. This has triggered a country-wide response from the kratom community.\n\n\n\nOn March 15, 2018, U.S. Representatives Phil Roe, M.D. (R-TN) and Thomas Suozzi (D-NY) introduced HR5298, or, the \"Modernizing Drug Enforcement Act of 2018\" – To amend the Controlled Substances Act to deem drugs or other substances that act as opioid mu receptor agonists to be in schedule I, subject to exceptions for substances intended for legitimate medical or research use, and for other purposes.\n\nRead that last sentence again... subject to exceptions for substances intended for legitimate medical or research use, and for other purposes. Exactly what does that mean? The language is clear: Make it illegal for citizens by pre-emptively classifying kratom as schedule I narcotic, but allow pharmaceutical companies to develop synthesized, patented alkaloids to make marketable prescription drugs approved by the FDA.\n\nThe proposed Modernizing Drug Enforcement Act of 2018 reads:\n‘‘(2) EXCEPTIONS.—A chemical substance is exempt from inclusion in schedule I by operation of paragraph (1) if the substance— ‘‘(A) is the subject of an approved application submitted under subsection (b) or (j) of section 505 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act; ‘‘(B) is exempt from the provisions of section 505 of such Act relating to new drugs because—\n‘‘(i) the substance is intended solely for investigational use as described in section 505(i) of such Act; and ‘‘(ii) the substance is being used exclusively for purposes of a clinical trial that is the subject of an effective investigational new drug application; or ‘‘(C) is the subject of a nonclinical drug investigation by experts qualified by scientific training and experience to investigate the safety and effectiveness of drugs.\"\n\nThree synthetic opioids synthesized from the alkaloids in kratom already exist: MGM-9, MGM-15, and MGM-16. They were synthesized from kratom’s alkaloids Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine: to make what is essentially patentable, pharmaceutical kratom.\n\n\n\nThe first study, published in 2008, took Mitragynine and used it to synthesize “MGM-9”. The second study, published in 2014 synthesized MGM-15 and MGM-16 from kratom’s other primary alkaloid, 7-Hydroxymitragynine.\n\nCompare this to Cannabis; it is classified federally as a schedule 1 substance. However, the pharmaceutical industry can manufacture a profitable synthetic version of THC (the same active ingredient in cannabis) and make it legal.\n\nYet another example is Speciofolin, a kratom alkaloid. On August 10, 1964, a patent was filed for Speciofoline by the multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline LLC. The patent claims the “alkaloid has useful pharmacodynamic activity, particularly analgetic and antitussive activity.” \n\nTe list continues with the patent application US20100209542A1, for University Of Massachusetts Medical School, University Of Mississippi in 2010. The application recognizes kratom as a treatment for opioid withdrawal, and goes on to claim that kratom could be used to help withdrawals from other drugs as well.\n\nThe Rx pain medication epidemic is sweeping across the nation, killing thousands every year and converting many of its abusers into heroin addicts, the pharmaceutical companies are scrambling to find a -profitable- alternative.\n\nKratom should be that alternative. With the full support of Uncle Sam.\n\nMore often than not, the drugs themselves, and the people that abuse them are blamed for this opioid crisis that is crippling our country. Not the giant Pharmaceutical corporations. Not Pharmaceutical lobbyists pushing to keep dangerous Rx drugs on the market. And certainly not our own government. How many more lives need to be ruined? How many more people have to die from overdose?\n\nThe people of this great country deserve to be treated better than this. If kratom has positively changed your life, and if you are passionate about keeping kratom legal, there are many things you can do:\n
\n \t
Call, write and email your representatives. It's easy, and only takes a few minutes.
\n \t
Share your story. body

Yet another state with pending legislation to criminalize kratom. Our editors at MKS are constantly scanning for new kratom legislation. AB2685 was Introduced on February 22 2018, and is just now hitting the radar of many kratom activists. This bill would criminalize the manufacture, possession and sale of products containing kratom (mitragyna speciosa korth), a botanical substance that grows naturally in Southeast Asia.

Again, another state using the FDA’s statement that erroneously states that kratom is a dangerous opiate.

If this bill passes, it would make anyone found with more than an ounce of kratom subjected to be imprisoned for five to 10 years, a fine of up to $150,000, or both. Less than an ounce will get you imprisoned for up to 8 months, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. The bill would take effect immediately if passed. Currently it has progressed along 25% of the bureaucratic line.

What can you do? This bill would criminalize the manufacture, possession and sale of products containing kratom (mitragyna speciosa korth), a botanical substance that grows naturally in Southeast Asia.
\n
Again, another state using the FDA’s statement that erroneously states that kratom is a dangerous opiate.
\n
\n
If this bill passes, it would make anyone found with more than an ounce of kratom subjected to be imprisoned for five to 10 years, a fine of up to $150,000, or both. Less than an ounce will get you imprisoned for up to 8 months, a fine of up to $10,000, or both. The bill would take effect immediately if passed. Currently it has progressed along 25% of the bureaucratic line.
\n
What can you do? body

Let's talk kratom. Whatever your opinion may be on this natural botanical, it's origins and historical uses remain an interesting subject. Today, lets look at the Thai strain:

Thailand is a native home of the kratom tree, where it is known as Kakuam or Ithang. It has been cultivated and harvested by the local population for thousands of years, as kratom trees grow fruitfully in the south of the country. Kratom leaves have been used in folk medicine as a natural mood enhancer, pain reliever, energy lift without over-stimulation, diarrhea treatment and many other common ailments.

Along with the extreme popularity among manual laborers and truck drivers who would take it for an energy boost instead of energy drinks (which can cause over-stimulation and anxiety), kratom has been used in Thailand to effectively treat opium withdrawal.

Interestingly, kratom has an intimate connection with the history of opium, which is abundant in Thailand. When individuals were addicted to opium, they would often substitute it with the much safer kratom leaf, which provided milder effects and relieved withdrawal symptoms. This provided a way for people to wean themselves off their addiction to opium by slowly taking less and less kratom every day.

It is rumored that this relationship between kratom and opium caused Thailand to pass the Kratom Act 2846, in 1943. You see, the use of Mitragyna Speciosa (kratom) continued to grow, and it cut into the Thailand government’s highly lucrative taxes on opium traders and shops. As more people turned to kratom, a much less expensive option than opium, the government started to see declining tax revenues, prompting the kratom ban.

This Act made kratom and its alkaloids a controlled and scheduled substance within Thailand. Possession of the herbal product was made illegal and the law demanded that no new kratom trees could be planted, and all existing trees were to be cut down and destroyed so that no new leaves could be harvested. However, enforcement of this law was not very effective since the tree is naturally indigenous to the region. Many traditional populations, especially in the south of the nation are rumored to continue to grow and use kratom.

Thai kratom is well-known for its powerful energetic effects. The unique alkaloid profile of Thai kratom often produces different reactions between different users, and may not be for everyone. However, this strain has a very dedicated following.

Reports of the pain-killing effects of Thai seem to be variable; typically, Red Thai is an effective choice in regards to analgesia and energy, whereas white and green Thai strains are said to be stimulating and a great choice for depression, but may be lacking in pain relief.

True Thai-grown kratom is impossible to come by due to it being illegal in Thailand, so all “Thai” kratom is grown elsewhere no matter what some vendors would like to state. That being said, Thai strains that you find on the market today are grown near Thailand. Thai and Malay kratom seem to be very similar - which makes sense, given the geographical proximity of each other. The same goes with the strain found on Sumatra, cut off from Malaysia and Thailand by only the narrow Straits of Malacca.

WARNING: In the U.S., kratom is sold strictly as an exfoliating and/or research botanical only. Consuming kratom has many interactions and negative consequences cautioned by the FDA. All information relating to the pharmacological effects of kratom is NOT intended to promote consumption and is for educational purposes only.

body

The American Kratom Association (AKA) are urging you to sign their petition aimed to stop the criminalization of Americans who safely use kratom.

The AKA, a Colorado-registered non-profit corporation, was established in 2014 by kratom consumers, not businesses. They are leading the fight to restore full consumer access to kratom nationwide. The freedom of consumers in the United States have been compromised by the present monopoly over health care products. Many Americans have discovered kratom as a superior agent for their health and well being. For instance, many products for pain available on the market today come with a laundry list of warnings, side effects, and are linked to 14,487 deaths in 2016 alone.[1]

“Our fellow Americans are suffering from misinformation that is allowed and codified into law for the profit of one single for-profit industry that our government has entrusted with our health — the synthetic chemical based pharmaceutical industry. Our declining health as a nation has shown that this was a mistake.” [2]

THE PETITION:

President Donald J. Trump
Kellyanne Conway, Assistant to the President on the Opioid Crisis

We the undersigned ask for your immediate action to protect the freedom of consumers to make their own health care decisions, and stop the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from their broad regulatory overreach and the criminalization of millions of Americans who use kratom.

Kratom is a safe herbal supplement that is used by Americans to manage their health and well-being. Many have found kratom to be an effective alternative pain management therapy to dangerously addictive and deadly opioids. Leading scientists have concluded that banning kratom will create an unsafe kratom black market, and force kratom users who manage acute or chronic pain to deadly opioids and will lead to increased opioid deaths in America.

Mr. President, we ask that you direct the FDA and the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) to research how kratom can best be used as both an alternative pain management therapy, and as a potential step-down from opioid addiction; and direct the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to return the proposed scheduling recommendation for kratom to the FDA and NIDA for those additional studies — and leave those Americans who use kratom for their personal health and well-being alone!

SIGN THE PETITION HERE

[1] Opioid Involvement in Deaths in the US Attributed to Drug Overdose, 2016

According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2016, there were 63,632 drug overdose deaths in the United States. The CDC further estimates that of those, 42,249 deaths involved any opioid. The CDC further reports that in 2016, 15,469 deaths involved heroin; 14,487 deaths involved natural and semi-synthetic opioids; 3,373 deaths involved methadone; and 19,413 deaths involved synthetic opioids other than methadone, a category which includes fentanyl. The sum of those numbers is greater than the total opioid involved deaths because, as noted by the CDC, “Deaths involving more than one opioid category (e.g., a death involving both methadone and a natural or semisynthetic opioid such as oxycodone) are counted in both categories.”

Hedegaard H, Warner M, Miniño AM. bodyToss 'n wash is my go-to for taking kratom...once I got the hang of it. I saw an enlightening video of a gal showing how she has mastered toss 'n wash: She gets a spoonful of kratom ready, then tips a small amount of water into her mouth, tilts head back, tips spoon into mouth on top of the water that's already in there, then swallow in one gulp - followed by a swig of water to wash down any residue. I still have to "visualize" the kratom going down, or there's a good chance it will all end up in the sink! I'll make tea once in a while, I like it with some french vanilla creamer.

body

Pending kratom legislation has recently been moving along the New York State bureaucratic line. Assembly Bill 231 (A231) was introduced a year ago -January 5, 2017- by Assembly woman Aileen Gunther. This bill proposes an outright ban on any form of kratom or derivatives of mitragyna speciosa in New York State. The bill was sent to the Economic Development Committee on January 3, 2018, and is currently under review.

According to a recent 8-Factor Analysis by Dr. Jack Henningfield, Ph.D., kratom does not kill people. Kratom is not an opioid. Kratom does not have the same effects as an opioid, and kratom is not an analogue of an opioid.

The recent fear mongering campaign by the FDA uses inaccurate data on alleged deaths to claim kratom is dangerous - Yet the FDA’s own adverse event database proves their own data is flawed. Nevertheless, the FDA is not letting the truth get in their way on demonizing kratom, and they are committed to dramatically expanding their regulatory control over a natural and safe botanical that has been used responsibly by consumers for decades in the United States, and for centuries in Southeast Asia.

So, what can we do?
New Yorkers can voice their opinion, and let the State Assembly know you do not support this bill.Tell them your story. Not sure where to start? Use the letter example below. However, when writing please use your own words.

You can help to stop bills like this from being passed.

Example Letter:

Optional: My name is ________, I'm a __-year old _________ from _________I would like to voice my support of Kratom and my disagreement with A231 that would prohibit the sale or distribution of kratom in New York. The FDA and their recent smear campaign has erroneously put kratom on the same level as illegal drugs like heroin. Kratom is a plant that is helping millions of people suffering chronic and acute mental and physical conditions. Kratom is also safely easing the nation's opiate epidemic problem naturally. Research to date has shown kratom to be an effective painkiller that does not cause respiratory depression; the main cause of death from opiate overdose.

ADD YOUR OWN WORDS :
-How you came to use kratom….. "body": "
\n
Pending kratom legislation has recently been moving along the New York State bureaucratic line. Assembly Bill 231 (A231) was introduced a year ago -January 5, 2017- by Assembly woman Aileen Gunther. This bill proposes an outright ban on any form of kratom or derivatives of mitragyna speciosa in New York State. The bill was sent to the Economic Development Committee on January 3, 2018, and is currently under review.
\n
According to a recent 8-Factor Analysis by Dr. Jack Henningfield, Ph.D., kratom does not kill people. Kratom is not an opioid. Kratom does not have the same effects as an opioid, and kratom is not an analogue of an opioid.
\n
The recent fear mongering campaign by the FDA uses inaccurate data on alleged deaths to claim kratom is dangerous - Yet the FDA’s own adverse event database proves their own data is flawed. Nevertheless, the FDA is not letting the truth get in their way on demonizing kratom, and they are committed to dramatically expanding their regulatory control over a natural and safe botanical that has been used responsibly by consumers for decades in the United States, and for centuries in Southeast Asia.
\n
So, what can we do?
\nNew Yorkers can voice their opinion, and let the State Assembly know you do not support this bill.Tell them your story. Not sure where to start? Use the letter example below. However, when writing please use your own words.
\n
\nYou can help to stop bills like this from being passed.
\n
\n
Example Letter:
\n
\n
ADD YOUR OWN WORDS :
\n-How you came to use kratom….. (did you learn about it in a chronic pain support group, etc?)-What ailments you suffer, what treatments haven't worked (prescriptions, surgery, etc.), how long you've been dealing with your condition, how long you've been using kratom and how many/what medications you've been able to quit.
\n
-What kratom means to you (has it given you your life back, have you gone back to work, can you play with your, exercise or travel, etc., something anecdotal about why kratom is important and should be available).
\nConclusion:
\n
Kratom is a safe alternative to pharmaceutical drugs with important benefits for many issues and has changed my life.
