titleHow To Survive A Hurricane
body# Hurricane Sandy Once when I was young, my dad very seriously said to me, “Son, there’s a hurricane coming, and I’m not sure we will survive.” In a near panic, I ran to my mom and said, “Mom, Mom, did you hear there’s a hurricane coming?” ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTPbTLEeeoxWkernpYYUpsKuzpcYafX4S1C5Y78kHfD5d/image.png) Shocked, she said, “Where did you hear that?” “Well, Dad told me,” I replied. She started laughing, “Oh, my, don’t worry about that Justin, your dad calls your Grandmother, “The Hurricane.” As I grew older, I began to understand why Dad called his mother-in-law “The Hurricane.” While I love my grandmother to death, she does seem to have a, how shall I say it, turbulent air about her. The family joke became even more strikingly comical when Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012. Yep, that’s her name — Sandy. ## WHAT IS A HURRICANE? By definition, a hurricane is a storm with a violent wind, in particular, a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean. That’s the simple answer. However, scientifically, a hurricane is a wind of force 12 on the Beaufort scale (equal to or exceeding 64 knots or 74 mph). SIDE NOTE: Listen, you crusty-old-men, I don’t want to hear about how you can also pass a wind of force 12 on the Beaufort scale. You just stay out of the comments section. Okay! We’ve got ladies her too! ## A COSTLY AND DEADLY NATURAL DISASTER When Hurricane Sandy hit, it became the second costliest hurricane of all time and the most deadly and destructive of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Sandy caused at least $75 billion dollars in damage and killed at least 233 people. Of course, Hurricane Katrina was the most financially devastating natural disaster to hit the United States. It was also one of the five deadliest hurricanes of all time. In total, Katrina killed at least 1,245 people and caused an estimated $108 billion dollars in property damage. Ouch! So, If you live in an area that is prone to Hurricanes, you NEED TO PREPARE NOW! According to NOAA, “many people are suffering from hurricane amnesia in the forms of complacency, denial, and inexperience.” Why? Because it has been over a decade since a major (Category 3 or higher) hurricane has hit the US. They warn, “This remarkable Hurricane streak is going to end.” So, what can you do to prepare? ## Here are 6 Steps to Prepare for a Hurricane ONE: DETERMINE YOUR RISK AND STAY INFORMED The best tool you can use to determine hurricane risk in your area is the Historical Hurricane Tracker from the NOAA. With this interactive tool, you can enter your address and see historical hurricane tracks. When I did this, I found that I presently sit smack dab in the middle of the path of 59 past hurricanes. (See graphic below) http://images.sheepdogman.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/hurricane-tracks.jpg Stay informed by following the hurricane watches and warnings issued by the NOAA either online or on TV and Radio. Know the difference between a watch and a warning. A watch lets you know that weather conditions are favorable for a hazard to occur. It literally means “be on guard!” During a weather watch, gather awareness of the specific threat and prepare for action – monitor the weather to find out if severe weather conditions have deteriorated and discuss your protective action plans with your family. A warning requires immediate action. This means a weather hazard is imminent – it is either occurring (a tornado has been spotted, for example) – or it is about to occur at any moment. During a weather warning, it is important to take action: grab the emergency kit you have prepared in advance and head to safety immediately. Both watches and warnings are important, but warnings are more urgent. ## TWO: DEVELOP AN EVACUATION PLAN There is no better plan than to get the heck out of Dodge while you still can. So, if you are in an area, or a home, where it is unsafe to ride out a hurricane, don’t hesitate, ruminate, bloviate, excoriate, dissipate, or most importantly wait until it’s too late to evacuate! Plan a bug-out location. Preferably, this location will be with an amicable friend, or relative, and not with your Aunt Agatha who lives in a trailer with 34 cats and 17 gerbils. Most likely, your pets will not find it easy to get along with so many other animals. http://images.sheepdogman.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/cat-295x300.png ## THREE: STORE SUPPLIES It is likely that you may not have electricity or other services for awhile, and most likely you will not be able to rely on local stores either, so stock up in advance. Here’s a list of items to secure. * Food and Water. All joking aside, be sure to have enough food and water for at least a week. I highly recommend this dehydrated option from Wise, but of course, canned goods will work well too. Store at least a gallon per person per day. [Blue Can](http://amzn.to/2mtvgI6) or [Datrex Foil Pouches](http://amzn.to/2lKqiZ3) are excellent options. * [Propane stove](http://amzn.to/2ibVHPA) or other means of boiling water and cooking * Lantern – [Streamlight](http://amzn.to/2l10Z1w) makes an incredible lantern that is well priced. * Fill prescriptions and have medications on hand. The last thing you want is to have to face TEOTWAWKI without pain meds. Secure at least (7-day supply) and other medical items (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, cane) * Radio. If you don’t have a [NOAA](http://amzn.to/2leqX1v) radio by now, well, you deserve what’s coming. Listen, just don’t tell anybody, go pick up this [NOAA Weather Radio](http://amzn.to/2leqX1v) with built in solar charger and flashlight, and I won’t tell anyone. It will be our secret. I promise. * Multi-purpose tool – I like the [Leatherman Wave](http://amzn.to/2lekqEg). * Sanitation and personal hygiene items such as a Covered bucket. Check out the [Luggable Loo](http://amzn.to/2kWnSon). It features a seat lid which just might save your hiney from some unnecessary pain. * Batteries, phone chargers. Obviously you need your flashlight to work, and of course, you have to have your phone. You wouldn’t want to miss a tweet from Justin Beiber, now would you? Yep, he has over 92 million followers on Twitter. Can you believe that? Only Katy Perry has more. Maybe we need a hurricane — just kidding. * Gas. Oh, my goodness, what a travesty it would be to get stuck in your vehicle on the freeway with a bunch of other people who are starting to freak out — all because you didn’t get gas when you could. Think ahead! * Blankets, pillows, etc. * First aid kit – I highly recommend the [Elite fully stocked GI issue medic kit bag](http://amzn.to/2leaUkq). * First Aid Manual – I recommend the [American Red Cross Handbook.](http://amzn.to/2h4oGXV) * Toiletries. *Keep your Emergency Vehicle Kit Stocked. See our article on [“How to Build the Ultimate Survival Kit: with Checklist to build your kit.](http://www.sheepdogman.com/vehicle-survival-kit-checklist) * Family and emergency contact information * Extra cash * [Emergency blanket](http://amzn.to/2mkWDaL) * Map(s) of the area. * Baby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers). * Pet supplies (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, bowl). * Tools/ supplies for securing your home. * Extra set of car keys and house keys. * Extra clothing, hat, and sturdy shoes. * Raingear. * Insect repellent and sunscreen. * Camera for photos of the damage. * Create a bug-out-binder. A bug-out-binder is a place where you keep copies (originals if necessary) of all of your relevant documents. I recommend a sturdy, zippable binder like the [C-Line expandable binder](http://amzn.to/2kOmHdw) for this — of course; you can use whatever suits you best. Quick tip: In addition to a bug-out-binder, create a secondary backup binder at a separate location. Also, scan, or photograph, your documents and save them to a USB flash drive. Make backups of the flash drive too.Quick tip: In addition to a bug-out-binder, create a secondary backup binder at a separate location. body# Hurricane Sandy Once when I was young, my dad very seriously said to me, “Son, there’s a hurricane coming, and I’m not sure we will survive.” In a near panic, I ran to my mom and said, “Mom, Mom, did you hear there’s a hurricane coming?” ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTPbTLEeeoxWkernpYYUpsKuzpcYafX4S1C5Y78kHfD5d/image.png) Shocked, she said, “Where did you hear that?” “Well, Dad told me,” I replied. Ouch!\n\nSo, If you live in an area that is prone to Hurricanes, you NEED TO PREPARE NOW!\n\nAccording to NOAA, “many people are suffering from hurricane amnesia in the forms of complacency, denial, and inexperience.” Why? Because it has been over a decade since a major (Category 3 or higher) hurricane has hit the US. They warn, “This remarkable Hurricane streak is going to end.”\n\nSo, what can you do to prepare?\n\n## Here are 6 Steps to Prepare for a Hurricane\n\nONE: DETERMINE YOUR RISK AND STAY INFORMED\n\nThe best tool you can use to determine hurricane risk in your area is the Historical Hurricane Tracker from the NOAA. With this interactive tool, you can enter your address and see historical hurricane tracks. When I did this, I found that I presently sit smack dab in the middle of the path of 59 past hurricanes. (See graphic below)\n\nhttp://images.sheepdogman.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/hurricane-tracks.jpg\n\nStay informed by following the hurricane watches and warnings issued by the NOAA either online or on TV and Radio. Know the difference between a watch and a warning.\n\nA watch lets you know that weather conditions are favorable for a hazard to occur. It literally means “be on guard!” During a weather watch, gather awareness of the specific threat and prepare for action – monitor the weather to find out if severe weather conditions have deteriorated and discuss your protective action plans with your family.\n\nA warning requires immediate action. This means a weather hazard is imminent – it is either occurring (a tornado has been spotted, for example) – or it is about to occur at any moment. During a weather warning, it is important to take action: grab the emergency kit you have prepared in advance and head to safety immediately. Both watches and warnings are important, but warnings are more urgent.\n\n## TWO: DEVELOP AN EVACUATION PLAN\n\nThere is no better plan than to get the heck out of Dodge while you still can. So, if you are in an area, or a home, where it is unsafe to ride out a hurricane, don’t hesitate, ruminate, bloviate, excoriate, dissipate, or most importantly wait until it’s too late to evacuate!\n\nPlan a bug-out location. Preferably, this location will be with an amicable friend, or relative, and not with your Aunt Agatha who lives in a trailer with 34 cats and 17 gerbils. Most likely, your pets will not find it easy to get along with so many other animals.\n\nhttp://images.sheepdogman.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/cat-295x300.png\n\n## THREE: STORE SUPPLIES\n\nIt is likely that you may not have electricity or other services for awhile, and most likely you will not be able to rely on local stores either, so stock up in advance.\n\nHere’s a list of items to secure.\n\n* Food and Water. All joking aside, be sure to have enough food and water for at least a week. I highly recommend this dehydrated option from Wise, but of course, canned goods will work well too. Store at least a gallon per person per day. [Blue Can](http://amzn.to/2mtvgI6) or [Datrex Foil Pouches](http://amzn.to/2lKqiZ3) are excellent options.\n\n* [Propane stove](http://amzn.to/2ibVHPA) or other means of boiling water and cooking\n\n* Lantern – [Streamlight](http://amzn.to/2l10Z1w) makes an incredible lantern that is well priced.\n\n* Fill prescriptions and have medications on hand. The last thing you want is to have to face TEOTWAWKI without pain meds. Secure at least (7-day supply) and other medical items (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, cane)\n\n* Radio. I promise.\n\n* Multi-purpose tool – I like the [Leatherman Wave](http://amzn.to/2lekqEg).\n\n* Sanitation and personal hygiene items such as a Covered bucket. Check out the [Luggable Loo](http://amzn.to/2kWnSon). It features a seat lid which just might save your hiney from some unnecessary pain.\n\n* Batteries, phone chargers. Obviously you need your flashlight to work, and of course, you have to have your phone. You wouldn’t want to miss a tweet from Justin Beiber, now would you? Yep, he has over 92 million followers on Twitter. Can you believe that? Only Katy Perry has more. Maybe we need a hurricane — just kidding.\n\n* Gas. Oh, my goodness, what a travesty it would be to get stuck in your vehicle on the freeway with a bunch of other people who are starting to freak out — all because you didn’t get gas when you could. Think ahead!\n\n* Blankets, pillows, etc.\n\n* First aid kit – I highly recommend the [Elite fully stocked GI issue medic kit bag](http://amzn.to/2leaUkq).\n\n* First Aid Manual – I recommend the [American Red Cross Handbook.](http://amzn.to/2h4oGXV)\n\n* Toiletries.\n\n*Keep your Emergency Vehicle Kit Stocked. See our article on [“How to Build the Ultimate Survival Kit: with Checklist to build your kit.](http://www.sheepdogman.com/vehicle-survival-kit-checklist)\n\n* Family and emergency contact information\n\n* Extra cash\n\n* [Emergency blanket](http://amzn.to/2mkWDaL)\n\n* Map(s) of the area.\n\n* Baby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers).\n\n* Pet supplies (collar, leash, ID, food, carrier, bowl).\n\n* Tools/ supplies for securing your home.\n\n* Extra set of car keys and house keys.\n\n* Extra clothing, hat, and sturdy shoes.\n\n* Raingear.\n\n* Insect repellent and sunscreen.\n\n* Camera for photos of the damage.\n* Create a bug-out-binder. Make backups of the flash drive too.Quick tip: In addition to a bug-out-binder, create a secondary backup binder at a separate location. bodyFantastic article! You hit the nail on the head, in my opinion, because the best thing you can take into a apocalypse situation is your optimal health. In addition to that many preppers overlook this. You also presented practical ways to improve your health, especially the walking and increasing it daily. Walking, sit ups, and push ups are free. It doesn't matter if you have all the other resources you need aka "beans, bullets, band-aids" if your health isn't great. Medical resources would be very limited if help was needed in an apocalypse. Being physically fit would be imperative in order to walk long distances or carry your supplies. I wrote an article on my page about how to lose weight. In life, in general, the best thing you can invest in is yourself. Thank you!

bodyYou presented practical ideas and information to help many people here. #4 on the list is extremely important because with consistency it forms a habit like brushing your teeth. It's a struggle sometimes but this is where dedication and commitment to achieve the goal come to the forefront. Thanks for creating this post. titleHow to get Physically Fit for the Apocalypse: 6 Steps
bodyhttp://www.sheepdogman.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/physically-fit-apocalypse-1.jpg <h1>Let' face it, many of us are not exactly physically fit.</h1> According to the CDC, <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html">more than one-third (36.5%) of U.S. adults have obesity.</a> It reminds me of this story. <blockquote>A husband and wife are getting ready for bed. The wife is standing in front of a full-length mirror taking a hard look at herself. "You know love," she says, "I look in the mirror, and I see an old woman. My face is all wrinkled. I've got fat legs, and my arms are all flabby." She turns to her husband and says, "Tell me something positive to make me feel better about myself." He thinks about it for a bit and then says in a soft voice, "Well...there's nothing wrong with your eyesight."</blockquote> All joking aside, not being physically fit is a serious problem. It increases the chances of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. This problem is not only a concern for our current health but also for the potential demands of a future emergency situation. Think about this. Are you prepared to run from an attacker or an angry hoard of zombies? (Kidding about the zombies or course.)  Could you travel a long distance on foot? If not, it's time to <strong>get physically fit.</strong> So what can you do about it? First, this legal caveat: please check with your healthcare professionals before beginning any exercise routine. I am not a licensed doctor, or a physical fitness professional. That said, this plan is something that I have used, and it works very well for me. I think it may work for you as well. <h2>1. Start with a realistic and practical goal.</h2> <strong>The problem</strong> with many physical fitness programs is that they are <strong>boring</strong>, <strong>painful</strong>, too <strong>advanced, or impractical -- </strong>they do not correlate with real world physical fitness needs. Instead of focusing on building strength and endurance for real life situations, they are focused on making you "look good." I don't think you're going to care all that much what you look like when running from an angry city mob or wild mama bear trying to protect her cubs in the wild. Well... Instead of focusing on building strength and endurance for real life situations, they are geared toward making you "look good." I don't think you're going to care all that much what you look like when running away from an angry city mob or wild mama bear trying to protect her cubs in the wild. Well... Besides, are you really trying to get a <em>Brazilian Butt</em> or <em>Abs of Steel</em>? Don't answer that! Let's start with this premise. You're not training for a marathon or to become an advanced athlete. <em><strong>No</strong></em>, Instead, you are preparing to <strong>walk, hike, and possibly run long distances</strong> -- maybe even for many days. Therefore, let's set some realistic expectations and goals and formulate a plan that fits real world physical needs. Moving forward <h2>2. Set a reasonable distance (1-6 miles) as a goal and walk it <strong>EVERY</strong> day.</h2> That's it. It's as simple as that. <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/in-depth/walking/art-20046261">A recent study from the Mayo Clinic says:</a> <blockquote>Physical activity doesn't need to be complicated. Something as simple as a daily brisk walk can help you live a healthier life. For example, regular brisk walking can help you: <ul> <li>Maintain a healthy weight</li> <li>Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes</li> <li>Strengthen your bones and muscles</li> <li>Improve your mood</li> <li>Improve your balance and coordination</li> </ul> The faster, farther and more frequently you walk, the greater the benefits.</blockquote> Personally, my daily distance is 4 miles. You may want to start with less. NEXT!!! <h2>3. Slowly increase the intensity by adding weight.</h2> At first, don't put anything in your backpack except the bare essentials -- the things that you should have with you anyways. Then, every two weeks' add more weight to your backpack, (I add 5 pounds) and max out at the weight of your 3-day pack. You could also add <a href="http://amzn.to/2iLKzwi">leg weights</a> or carry <a href="http://amzn.to/2iS49aX">dumbbells</a>, in addition to your pack. What's next? <h2>4. Show up, EVERY day and every two weeks take a day to go as far as you can.</h2> The key to making this work is to do it every day. The reason this is <em>so</em> important is that just one day missed, can lead to two, and before you know it, it's been weeks. <strong>Don't skip a day!</strong> At two week intervals, take a day to walk as far as you can with your pack and current weight level in it (remember to increase the weight by 5 pounds or so every two weeks'. <h2>5. Select interesting terrain.</h2> I am fortunate to live in the forest. One of the things I love about hiking in the woods is that I have become familiar with all of the things that go on there. I look forward to being out there every day. Find a place you enjoy and go walking. <h2>6. Sit-ups and push-ups can be added to increase core and upper body strength.</h2> I consider this to be optional, as the premise we are working from here is the ability to walk, hike or run long distances. However, what you will find is that when you stick to the above plan, you will have a lot more energy and <strong>want to do more.</strong> <h1>So, just do it!</h1> Get physically fit! You will be glad you did -- especially in an emergency situation. It will also be fun. Things you will potentially learn along the way are: which clothing, shoes, rain gear, backpack, etc., work well for walking long distances. Also, who is out-and-about in your area including the animals. How to deal with weather changes and potential problems with your bug-out-bag, hiking, camping, or hunting pack. <h2>Happy walking! You can do it!</h2> Please help me spread the word by sharing on social media, and tell me about your fitness strategies in the comments below. Thanks, friends! Press on!
