      "body": "So, as you might imagine, we traveled quite a bit and, as I did not speak German, or anything other than English and basic Spanish, there were times I had no idea where we were. I was told that our host was eager to see the caves in Valkenburg, so that was our next destination. \nWe stopped at a charming hotel. It was so lovely, I took some pictures. Isn't this a beautiful bed? Unfortunately there was only one bed in our double room, a bit of an awkward situation for the Preacha's Daughta and I. I have to say that this trip did have some challenges in addition to the wonderful sights and one of the challenges for me was all of the walking. I have arthritic knees and it seemed like everyone else was just jaunting along while I was really struggling to keep up. \nOnce we arrived, we bought tickets and waited for the next tour, which thankfully, was not a walking tour. I had no real reference for what we were looking at, but I had thought that once I saw it, I would figure it out. I really didn't. Here's why. What I experienced was a very dark ride on a bus type vehicle which was much colder than I had expected and the things we stopped to look at did not seem to have much in common with each other.  There were various artistic pieces to look at, with very intricate and beautiful details and then there was graffiti (and not pretty graffiti). Then there were weird commercial type items randomly placed throughout. Check out the disney characters. This was kind of cool. \nSo, kinda weird. It wasn't until I got home that I found out what the point of the caves was. (Still don't understand the bizarre placement of items inside.) These caves were used to hide Jews during World War II.  I never would have gotten that from the tour. Thank goodness for Wikipedia! \nSo we walked back through the town and then spent the night. Next stop-Cologne, Germany!",

      "body": "This is the second part to my story about my trip to Europe a few years ago. After visiting Haarlem, we took a train to Amsterdam. I enjoyed this very much, as I have very little occasion to ride trains where I live. When we arrived,  it was a little cloudy, and soon it began to rain. We purchased tickets for a canal boat ride. Three of us had decided we would like to visit the Van Gogh Museum, so we got off at that stop. Not the most pleasant wait, but it's VAN GOGH people! Worth it. We made it inside and rented headsets, so we could walk around the museum and have some description and background information in English (very cool). Unfortunately, it is against the rules to take pictures inside the museum and really, a picture wouldn't do it justice. For me, walking through that museum and seeing painting that Van Gogh actually painted, seeing the thickness and bumps in the paint, it brought tears to my eyes. I think it was partly because of how important art was to my mother and I wished I could share those moments with her. We left afterward and then things got a little weird. Aside from the amazing experience at the museum and the canal boat, two other things stand out for me about Amsterdam: 1- the bicycles-see below picture. I was a bit of a loner amid this group of people and perhaps that will explain part of the weirdness.  I was with my father, his wife and another young friend of theirs referred to as \"the Preacha's daughta,\" all of whom do not drink, smoke or have any experience with any type of drugs. In contrast, and as a big surprise to me, our hostess (a relative of my step-mother's) has a pretty big drinking problem. Of course, no one seemed to notice this despite pretty obvious clues, so I was in a bit of a spot. I, on the other hand, just to clarify, am a rare social drinker, used to smoke years ago and while I don't use drugs, I did experiment a tad when I was super young and since then have worked with substance users. To make things even more awkward, I am the only non-conservative. \nSo, back to the story. After the restaurant, our hostess and her friends decided to go to an Irish pub. I didn't think much about this at the time. My step-mom decided to indulge her sweet-tooth and we headed into an ice cream shop.  We got inside and she said the man behind the counter, \"Do you have any coffee ice cream?\" in her very strong New Hampshire accent. The man answered, \"I don't serve Americans.\" It was really loud and she did not hear him, so she asked again. This time he said, \"We are closed.\" The shop was very small and we went out to the street to discuss what happened. My stepmom didn't really know what to make of it. I told her what he had initially said. We were all genuinely not sure what made him say that. The only explanation I could think of is that maybe he misunderstood her and thought she was insulting him. \nSo then, we were standing in the street. We didn't see any sign of our companions, so we decided to look in some stores.![100_3721.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZb4tktAgVNhSjsx3q2rEkQT5W7HMEUAofPEHWFZKT3wQ/100_3721.JPG)\nDid I mention there was a strong smell of marijuana smoke coming from the \"coffee shop\" next to the ice cream place? Okay, just setting the scene, so we start shopping, but each and every shop we went in was filled with marijuana products. I was amazed by the millions of different things they came up with to do with marijuana.  So we are standing in this shop, when The Preacha's Daughta holds up two items: one was pair of socks with a marijuana leaf on them and the other was a keychain that said Amsterdam. \"Which should I get?\" she asked. I suggested that since that was a marijuana leaf on the socks, she should probably go with the keychain. She dropped those socks like a hot potato!\nSo, we went back out into the street. We tried walking back and forth in front of the Irish pub to get our companions' attention/pity. Nada. We walked up and down the street for awhile. Eventually our hostess came out of the pub. She clearly did not want to interrupt her bar time. We told her what had happened with the ice cream guy and she went ballistic. Ever seen a drunken fundamentalist Christian cuss someone out? Well, let me tell you...it was something. Basically, she told him he was a disgrace and that she would pray for him, over and over, but in a threatening tone. I was a little afraid. \nAfter this, she went back in the pub. We basically stood around and got a contact high until she was ready to go. We walked back to the train and rode the train back to Haarlem. The train ride was a little less fun on the ride back than the way there. \nStill, despite the weirdness, I loved Amsterdam. I think I loved the day version a little better though. \nCheck back in to hear more about my long strange trip!",

      "title": "Highlights from European Travels - Haarlem, The Netherlands",

Other than Canada, this is first time I have ever been out of the country, so it was quite an experience.  One of my favorite places was the Netherlands. \nI was traveling with my father, his wife, a young girl my step-mom referred to as \"the preacha's daughta,\" and our hosts were my stepmom's niece and her husband. On this particular part of the journey, we also had some other friends of theirs with us. I was sharing a room with the preacher's daughter, aka Emily, for economy's sake, which was a little weird at times, but we dealt with it.  I mean, we were getting to go to Europe, right? \nSo we checked in to this very posh hotel in Haarlem- see picture below.\n![100_3574.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQnAhbsKJmHH7TVazNB98nEMWGWJ9aDJvawT3n2KaFSac/100_3574.JPG). \nIt was a beautiful hotel and there were these gigantic apples in the lobby where we checked in. That was our breakfast the following day and it was plenty. At the time, I was struggling with trying to figure out how to call my husband. It seemed that the odds were against me. The phone I bought specifically to use overseas was useless. So I bought a phone card, but I couldn't get the blasted thing to work. There was also the time difference that seemed to interfere. Whenever someone was available to help me, it was a time when my husband would not be available or sleeping.  That night the issue was that I don't speak Dutch and no one at the front desk spoke English, so no one could assist me in figuring out how to use the phone. There was a lovely man traveling with us who was able to make the card work for me that night, but unfortunately, my husband was not at home (and did not have a cell). \nSo...the next day we went to Haarlem. We raced out to the bus chewing on our apples went first to the market, which was wonderful. There were stands with flowers, meats and cheeses, fruit and (my favorite) cookies and baked goods. \n![100_3625.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcxFbYkueMEdDQMD8ap17GrJTwbevhUKYyzBP5xyCXvzi/100_3625.JPG)\nThese were my favorite treats I discovered. They are like crispy thin waffle cookies with honey or caramel in the middle. I got one that was hot and it was delicious. I discovered some later at a grocery store in Germany and I was eating them on the airplane ride home. The lady next to me was staring, so I offered her one. She was from Germany. \"Those are Christmas Cookies!\" she said. For those of you who don't know, Corrie Ten Boom hid Jews in her home and helped to smuggle them out to safety. There is a hole cut out of the wall (blue part), where people can look, or stand in if they want to, so that people can see just how narrow the space was. The hole was not there during that time. Rather, look to the left and you see the blue space at the bottom? People had to crawl under there and wedge themselves behind the wall. It was several flights up. People would have had to go up those steep, skinny stairs quickly and quietly. Pretty amazing stuff. It was a great tour with lots of other great information, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you with all the details. \nNext, we went to Amsterdam.
