bodyhttp://www.24x36.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Grandma_Chiquinho_web.jpg I was in the hospital’s recreation room, telling a story to a little four year old girl. Her grandmother was also there and there was another patient who was looking rather nervous and agitated. Restless and tossing his toys at the wall, and getting a scolding each time from his grandmother, but nevertheless carried on aggressively playing. This went on for a good while. Now and then the kid looked at me, out of the corner of his eye, as I had asked if he wanted to hear stories, but shook his head and refused my offer. I paid no attention to him. I left him alone in his own time. Gradually, he got tired of mistreating the toys and being scolded by the grandmother, so I thought I could finally approach him once again. This time I asked if he wanted to hear a nice story. His name was Kaleb. He had very lively eyes and a face of a mischievous little guy! He accepted. I began by telling the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk", which he had not heard before. He suddenly became very interested in the story and followed very closely with great attention. The funny part for him was when I told him that John and his mother had gone to the town market to sell their cow, and that was their only source of income: The MILK COW. At that point, he stopped me and burst into laughter, and asked: - Milk? What’s a MILK COW? - Hey! And where do you think milk comes from, Kaleb ?, I asked. - From the supermarket of course, and in a box!, he answered. With him laughing non-stop, I explained the finer details as to how a cow gives milk which is then packaged into cartons to finally get to the super market shelf. At that moment, he was already comfortably nestled into his grandmother's lap and quietly asked: - Grandma, please brings Chiquinho... I thought he was talking about the other patient with whom he was sharing the room and so that he too could also hear this very interesting story; but in fact, Chiquinho was really favorite his rag doll, which he soon affectionately embraced, and settled down again into his grandmother's lap and when almost asleep, turned to me and said: - Please keep on telling the story, tell, tell... bodyhttp://www.24x36.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Grandma_Chiquinho_web.jpg I was in the hospital’s recreation room, telling a story to a little four year old girl. The funny part for him was when I told him that John and his mother had gone to the town market to sell their cow, and that was their only source of income: The MILK COW. bodyI would like to add that the illustrations on the pockets of the jacket are also done by me - Actually I illustrate children's books for a living, over 100 to date - soon you will see the illustrations, as I post the different narratives, from fellow storytellers at the hospitals here in my city.

bodyhttp://www.wilkins.fot.br/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/MG_7318_OK_web.jpg At the tender age of 6, my nephew Felipe, was diagnosed with Leukemia. At that time we did not know exactly how serious, and to what extent, the disease would take its toll on our family, during twelve years of hospitalization and sadness, interspersed with frayed hopes. Many a time during the chemotherapy sessions, I tried my very best to alleviate his pain with a myriad of distractions, but not knowing exactly how. Neither puppets nor jokes were to any avail. Finally, Felipe quietly returned home from whence he came. Not too long after, I met a group of volunteer storytellers who would visit hospitals on a regular basis to read selected short stories to the kids in the ICU and wards. This was and is a really wonderful manner to meaningfully help those children who had lost hope and the light of their lives, while lying on a lonely hospital bed, far away from their friends, family and loving pets. Therefore, I immediately grasped the chance of joining the group, and underwent the full three month training period and qualified as a volunteer storyteller. At graduation I got my cherished colored coat to blend in with the medical staff at hospitals. For the last ten years I have looked forward to my weekly visit to a local hospital, with the expectation of being able to extent this truly noble task of spreading joy. Their smiles and laughter are priceless rewards, when I feel that I have selected the right book from my funny satchel, thus filling my soul with joy and contentment. To celebrate a decade of the project CONTA MAIS, which translates to “tell me more”, an illustrated book was compiled and published with many of the wonderful moments that the members of our group encountered, entitled “Stories, a medicine that does not hurt”. Members of our group sell copies to better our cause. In future posts, I will be sharing each story with the community.

bodyONCE UPON A TIME... At the tender age of 6, my nephew Felipe, was diagnosed with Leukemia. In future posts, I will be sharing each story with the community. http://www.wilkins.fot.br/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/MG_7318_OK_web.jpg
