titleVideo Games Steemit??
bodyVideo games have a weird obsession with moral decisions: Are you the type of mercenary who saves civilians to gain points, or the kind who decorates their home with landmines to gain a comical acrobatics show? Any path you choose, it's a win-win scenario. But sometimes a game will give you a complex ethical dilemma, and then only reward you if you respond like a total psychopath. The idea is supposedly to deliver an emotional impact, but these choices generally only lead to an internet search on which Force powers you get if you saw all the younglings in half with your light saber.

title5 Unexpected Things I Learned from Being a Heroin Addict
bodyGrowing up, my understanding of heroin was limited to "If you use it once, you're screwed" and "Don't let the girl from She's All That borrow your cast iron pan." Well, I was hooked on one of the most addictive drugs in the world for over a year before I was arrested and forced to get clean in jail, and along the way I learned that this kind of habit is nothing like what we've been told. 1. Addiction Isn't Instant (And That Makes It Worse) By far the biggest rumor surrounding heroin is that it's an instant addiction -- you take one hit, and you're hooked. Just check out this scene from Breaking Bad: Jesse asks what it'll feel like, telling us that it's his first journey into the wonderful world of opioids. To be blunt, I have literally never met anyone who was introduced to heroin with a needle. That's roughly the equivalent of taking your first drink of alcohol by butt-chugging moonshine out of a gas can. The reality is a lot less abrupt, and a lot scarier: Most people start by popping and smoking pills. In that stage, it never seems like a problem, because you can use daily for weeks with no withdrawal effects whatsoever. I got totally wasted with my girlfriend Sally* every night and woke up every morning clear as a bell, so it was super easy to think "Hey, why not use again?" I never had cravings, so it didn't feel like a real problem -- but somewhere in that process, a switch got flipped. *Not her real name, obviously. What is this, Leave It to Beaver? One day I woke up with what felt like a flu, and it wasn't until I got some more dope to "help my flu" that I realized I was "junk sick" -- the term users have for the early stages of withdrawal. It was after that -- after I was addicted -- that I turned to the needle. Once you're at the stage where you're even considering the needle, you long ago forgot about "squeamishness" right along with "work" and "everything else you ever wanted to accomplish in your life." The really bad part of heroin isn't the physical dependency -- it's the addiction, and there's a difference. Telling people heroin will get them "instantly addicted" is a fine scare tactic, but it disguises the real danger. I was using heroin daily not because I had jumped off the swings and accidentally touched a needle discarded on a playground, thus allowing the addiction-gremlins inside my brain, but because my firsthand experience with the drug told me that it was a risk-free way to escape from my problems. So when I realized I needed to kick, that meant facing not only the physical agony of withdrawal, but all the demons I had been running from in the first place. And I don't know if you've ever seen one run in the wild, but demons are fast. 2. Movies Get the Scary Parts Wrong Remember that scene in Requiem for a Dream when Jared Leto's arm gets infected and his friend acts like it's the craziest thing he's ever seen? That scene is ridiculous not because it's overhyped and chock-full of Leto-bangs, but because that shit happens all the time. When Sally got an abscess, we drained it with a hot compress and a disinfected razor blade, and that was it -- no hospital, no surgery, no nothing. It's so commonplace, it's practically boring. A piddling little bit of blackened limb rot would be downright pleasant next to the looming threat of an accidental overdose. In a perfect world where no one ever makes mistakes, the difference between a good shot and a lethal dose would be about $10 -- but we don't live in a perfect world, so we have to deal with purity issues. Since there's not exactly an FDA for hard drugs, heroin purity is less closely monitored than, say, orange juice pulp levels. One person can have dope that is 80 percent pure, while his roommate can be getting high on stuff closer 10 percent, and there's virtually no way of visually distinguishing between the two. What happens over and over again is someone used to the lower-end stuff gets some "fire" dope from his dealer. Even if he's careful and does a tiny shot to test it out, it could still end up being like four of his normal shots. That's like picking up your latte at Starbucks, only when you go to take a sip, it turns out your coffee is made of shotgun blast and your head gets splattered all over the ceiling. Then Llarold, the hipster barista, is all "Psh, casuals." This is why heroin in particular is responsible for such a large portion of all drug overdoses. In the short time I was using, I knew four people who overdosed that exact way. Some users have clarified that you don't die of an overdose of heroin -- you die "from heroin." Again, in an effort to make the drug seem scarier, we've distracted from the far worse reality: Heroin isn't dangerous because you might get an infection. Heroin is dangerous because at best you're not just at Death's door -- you're in Death's living room having a Mario Kart tournament at 2 a.m. and hoping he doesn't wake up, but you're not paying very close attention to the volume, because you're high on heroin. I got clean from almost sheer luck, and that process is where things got even weirder. 3. On the Subjects of Heroin, Getting Clean, and My Penis As I mentioned, my addiction finally came to an end when I was arrested. Sally and I had been couch surfing as hidden homeless for months and shoplifting electronics to pay for food and drugs. We were finally busted while stealing dinner: lamb chops with a side of organic sweet potato and asparagus (hey, a heroin addiction is no excuse for barbarism, plus it's amazing what you can afford when you're stealing it). So I went to jail, and I discovered that a big part of heroin withdrawal involved my penis. To explain that, let me back up a bit ... One of the key effects of heroin is a dulling of the senses: Smell is just gone, sounds get muffled, and since your body is numb, you can lose the ability to orgasm. Rather than a downside, this ended up becoming a bonus, because if you can't come, you can just fuck for hours. That was one of our favorite things to do, actually: We'd get high and bone for as long as we felt like. And since both our bodies were mostly numb, things got ... pretty weird. Comic book weird. Japanese comic book weird. Then, in withdrawal, the exact opposite happened. I was sitting there in my jail cell in the throes of all the worst parts of heroin withdrawal (sweats, chills, vomiting, being in friggin' jail) when all my senses came flooding back like a hyperactive toddler waking up from a forced nap. And they even brought a friend: the supernatural ability to orgasm at the slightest stimulation. Wake up? Orgasm! Accidentally brush it with a scratchy jailhouse blanket? What a lovely orgasm! Shake it off after you pee into an industrial toilet? Bam, orgasm! This stopped being pleasurable pretty much instantly -- sharing living space with a guy named "Tito the Butcher" isn't the most erotic of all possible atmospheres -- but that didn't matter. I could shoot off three in 30 seconds whether I wanted to or not, and this sensitivity stayed with me for weeks. 4. Methadone Can Be Worse Than Heroin For the uninitiated, methadone is a cheap, legal alternative to heroin that can be prescribed to help wean users off the drug. But trading a heroin addiction for a methadone addiction isn't exactly the Black Friday deal people make it out to be, because methadone is actually the more addictive substance. While heroin withdrawal by itself can't kill you and has physical withdrawal symptoms lasting anywhere from three days to a few weeks, withdrawing from methadone absolutely can kill you, and has symptoms that can last several months. I wouldn't wish that shit on my worst enemy. Not even you, Llarold the hipster barista. Another problem is that methadone clinics aren't what you'd call "strict." They let you choose how to "taper off" yourself, and they're happy to keep selling you the drug as long as you want (there's a reason recovering junkies refer to methadone users as "lifers"). Then there are studies that have found that, in terms of cost to society and overall life-span of patients, a more effective strategy for getting clean is to just slowly taper off heroin use. It's probably worth noting at this point that, like methadone, heroin itself was first introduced as a safe, non-addictive cure for morphine addiction -- at least until they started marketing it to children as a cough medication. I'm not saying that companies intentionally give drugs to addicts to keep them addicted, or even that methadone is a bad thing -- it allows a lot of people to manage their addiction and lead something like a normal life, and I wouldn't take that away from anyone who wants it. But I am saying that trading one opioid for another shouldn't be your only choice, because it can easily end up being just another addiction. You know the stories about how some little island in the Pacific had a rat problem, so they flew in snakes -- then they had a snake problem? Same deal. Except this time the snakes are inside your veins. 5. Withdrawal Can Last the Rest of Your Life I told you that heroin withdrawal lasts around three weeks at the most, and that's true, but this shit doesn't end at withdrawal: You can still end up with PAWS. PAWS is a deceptively adorable acronym for post-acute withdrawal syndrome, and the symptoms are similar to PTSD: depression, insomnia, restlessness, feelings of guilt and shame, inability to think clearly, and, in my case, very vivid nightmares. In one, I have a bag of dope in my hand and I am looking for a place to shoot up, but every time I find one, I get interrupted. The dream always ends when I have a needle in my arm: I'm about to push off, and right before I can feel the effects, I wake up. PAWS is like my addiction taunting me, every night, and it can last anywhere from a year, to several decades, to forever. But even without PAWS, I know I'm never going back to the way I was before -- I'm "hooked" forever. Even if I don't use for 20 years, one slip-up means I'll get withdrawal symptoms almost immediately. This is why you will see recovering heroin addicts refuse pain medication at the hospital: They'd rather go through surgery without morphine than have to go back to that very first day they tried to kick. These days, Sally and I are broken up (I dumped her when she rolled over on me in jail, and not in the fun way. Now she's in prison for something unrelated), and I've been clean for 11 months. But my problems aren't over, because the drug itself isn't the problem -- the addiction is. Remember, I was using heroin every day for weeks before I developed a physical dependency, so heroin was just my attempt to fix problems that were already in place. If you know someone who's using or has used, you should know that this isn't as simple as them making bad decisions. They're running from something that, to them, seems a whole lot scarier than a needle.

One person can have dope that is 80 percent pure, while his roommate can be getting high on stuff closer 10 percent, and there's virtually no way of visually distinguishing between the two. What happens over and over again is someone used to the lower-end stuff gets some \"fire\" dope from his dealer. Even if he's careful and does a tiny shot to test it out, it could still end up being like four of his normal shots. That's like picking up your latte at Starbucks, only when you go to take a sip, it turns out your coffee is made of shotgun blast and your head gets splattered all over the ceiling. Then Llarold, the hipster barista, is all \"Psh, casuals.\"\nThis is why heroin in particular is responsible for such a large portion of all drug overdoses. In the short time I was using, I knew four people who overdosed that exact way. Some users have clarified that you don't die of an overdose of heroin -- you die \"from heroin.\" Again, in an effort to make the drug seem scarier, we've distracted from the far worse reality: Heroin isn't dangerous because you might get an infection. Heroin is dangerous because at best you're not just at Death's door -- you're in Death's living room having a Mario Kart tournament at 2 a.m. and hoping he doesn't wake up, but you're not paying very close attention to the volume, because you're high on heroin.\nI got clean from almost sheer luck, and that process is where things got even weirder.\n\n3. On the Subjects of Heroin, Getting Clean, and My Penis\nAs I mentioned, my addiction finally came to an end when I was arrested. So I went to jail, and I discovered that a big part of heroin withdrawal involved my penis.\nTo explain that, let me back up a bit ...\n\nOne of the key effects of heroin is a dulling of the senses: Smell is just gone, sounds get muffled, and since your body is numb, you can lose the ability to orgasm. Japanese comic book weird.\nThen, in withdrawal, the exact opposite happened. I was sitting there in my jail cell in the throes of all the worst parts of heroin withdrawal (sweats, chills, vomiting, being in friggin' jail) when all my senses came flooding back like a hyperactive toddler waking up from a forced nap. And they even brought a friend: the supernatural ability to orgasm at the slightest stimulation.\n\nWake up? Orgasm!\nAccidentally brush it with a scratchy jailhouse blanket? What a lovely orgasm!\n\nShake it off after you pee into an industrial toilet? Bam, orgasm!\n\nThis stopped being pleasurable pretty much instantly -- sharing living space with a guy named \"Tito the Butcher\" isn't the most erotic of all possible atmospheres -- but that didn't matter. I could shoot off three in 30 seconds whether I wanted to or not, and this sensitivity stayed with me for weeks.\n\n4. Methadone Can Be Worse Than Heroin\nFor the uninitiated, methadone is a cheap, legal alternative to heroin that can be prescribed to help wean users off the drug. Not even you, Llarold the hipster barista.\nAnother problem is that methadone clinics aren't what you'd call \"strict.\" They let you choose how to \"taper off\" yourself, and they're happy to keep selling you the drug as long as you want (there's a reason recovering junkies refer to methadone users as \"lifers\"). Then there are studies that have found that, in terms of cost to society and overall life-span of patients, a more effective strategy for getting clean is to just slowly taper off heroin use. It's probably worth noting at this point that, like methadone, heroin itself was first introduced as a safe, non-addictive cure for morphine addiction -- at least until they started marketing it to children as a cough medication.\nI'm not saying that companies intentionally give drugs to addicts to keep them addicted, or even that methadone is a bad thing -- it allows a lot of people to manage their addiction and lead something like a normal life, and I wouldn't take that away from anyone who wants it. But I am saying that trading one opioid for another shouldn't be your only choice, because it can easily end up being just another addiction. You know the stories about how some little island in the Pacific had a rat problem, so they flew in snakes -- then they had a snake problem? Same deal. Except this time the snakes are inside your veins.\n\n5. Withdrawal Can Last the Rest of Your Life\nI told you that heroin withdrawal lasts around three weeks at the most, and that's true, but this shit doesn't end at withdrawal: You can still end up with PAWS.\nPAWS is a deceptively adorable acronym for post-acute withdrawal syndrome, and the symptoms are similar to PTSD: depression, insomnia, restlessness, feelings of guilt and shame, inability to think clearly, and, in my case, very vivid nightmares. But even without PAWS, I know I'm never going back to the way I was before -- I'm \"hooked\" forever. Even if I don't use for 20 years, one slip-up means I'll get withdrawal symptoms almost immediately. This is why you will see recovering heroin addicts refuse pain medication at the hospital: They'd rather go through surgery without morphine than have to go back to that very first day they tried to kick.\nThese days, Sally and I are broken up (I dumped her when she rolled over on me in jail, and not in the fun way. They're running from something that, to them, seems a whole lot scarier than a needle.",

titleI Lost Over $2500 On Steemit In My First Month: (Why I'm Kicking Myself In The Balls For Not Powering Up)
bodyI Lost Over $124,768 On Steemit In My First Month: (Why I'm Kicking Myself In The Balls For Not Powering Up) 6 hours ago by rok-sivante in steemit "Yayyyy! Free money! We're all gonna be rich!" I didn't buy into that at first, when I starting banging out articles and racking up rewards on Steemit. Frankly, I had no expectations of getting paid and was doubtful this whole thing could actually work. To my surprise, it turned out to be legit. Seeing over $5100 in Steem Dollars in my account - and a chunk of that into my bank account - I figured this place turned out to be a pretty good deal after all. Ka-Ching! Since I already got paid half my rewards in Steem Power, I figured it would be reasonable to keep the other half in Steem Dollars to pull out as cash when needed. I'm moving back to Canada from Bali in a few months, so the idea of extra cash to fund reestablishing myself there was a welcoming idea. Little did I know at the time what the actual cost of that decision may have been... (And yes guys, this post fits into the "circlejerk" category. Guilty as charged. :-p) Wait a minute... Feeling smugly content with my earnings, I shared the good news with some friends about how hey should get onboard this site. My friend Jayson threw in $2000 when Steem was around $0.49 - and over the next couple days, kept giving me updates about how the price was shooting up and what a great investment he made. Suddenly, something felt off... While I usually try to understand all the details about things before I get into them, I found the dynamics of conversion between Steem, Steem Dollars, and Steem Power a bit complicated and didn't bother to work out what the potential returns of being invested in each would be. BIG mistake. As the price of Steem pushed past $2, I realized = had I been invested in Steem or Steem Power with my $5100 in Steem Dollar rewards on July 4, I would have made a 10x return - rather than keeping the funds in Steem Dollars, pegged to the USD! But it didn't stop there either. Digging around, I rediscovered that since new Steem created is distributed to Steem Power holders - the final payout on Steem Power is about 2x the Steem. SO... In effect, I missed out on 10x from the price jump over the last couple days PLUS the "interest on Steem..." With the price currently more than 12 times higher than it was on July 4th - factoring in that doubling of Steem "interest" on Steem Power... Had I put ALL my Steem Dollars into Steem Power, it'd have the future potential of at least $124,000 (as long as price of Steem stays above the current $2.50 - though I can foresee it going 10-100+ times that over the next few years). So did I really lose over a hundred grand on Steemit? No. That did make for a catchy headline though, didn't it? BUT even though it wasn't an outright *loss, the opportunity cost of choosing to hold my rewards in Steem Dollars rather than convert to Steem Power and hold for the long term was over six figures. Go figure that. Granted, it's nice having a few extra grand on hand - eases the financial headache of DJ working being super slow this season, and I'm stoked to invest in a new snowboard and music production gear when I get back to Canada. But I've got a strong feeling I'm gonna be kicking myself in the nuts in a few years when the market validates that a ridiculously awesome investment Steem Power may be at this time. And either way, I've got crazy gratitude. Since half my rewards are still in Steem Power, I may be indeed be a very happy man as Steem grows in market value (not just Steemit, but a whole diverse ecosystem of applications and ventures to be built on the Steem blockchain and fuelled by the cryptocurrency). (respects for tuck-fheman creating this badass promotion image. This is probably what got me hooked on Steemit what seems like a whole world ago.) Do Not Do As I Did... I hope this story helps you better understand the dynamics of the Steem currencies and gives a real example of the opportunity cost of not investing in Steem Power. As you can see, when the whales, top dogs, and leaders on this platform who've done their homework properly advise to Power Up, there's good reason for it! To better understand the system and why Powering Up may be a choice your future self thanks you for, check out these two excellent articles by @donkeypong: Still Confused by Steem, Steem Dollars, and Steem Power? The Power Plant Analogy Would Albert Power Up? You Need a Long Term Plan, Also Failing Forward: A Reframe One other benefit I got out of this: a $124,768 lesson. If it's that pricey, it MUST be a good lesson... Truth is: this window of opportunity to get in at the start of Steemit is not a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We've barely begun the blockchain revolution, and there are going to be ALOT of new blockchain & cryptocurrency startups in the years to come. The greatest rewards from Steemit could end up being not even the financial profit itself, but the learning experience we gain here. We're getting our feet wet and are on the leading-edge of a MAJOR trend, developing skills in a new collaborative-economic model that holds MASSIVE potential for all kinds of profit and creative success. It will only be a matter of time before some other development comes along that we can apply the same principles learned here on Steemit to - playing our cards smarter the next learning cycle. That next learning cycle could still be on Steemit, too. All markets rise and fall in cycles - we're only at the beginning of Steem's. And beyond Steemit, there are all kinds of applications and developments that can be built on the Steem blockchain out of the same ecosystem. And for each of those, there will be more opportunities. We just have to learn to identify where things are in the cycles and how to ride the waves. So... Surf's Up. And Power Up. :-)

titleSuggestions/Strategies for SteemIt improvement regarding Tags
bodyAfter browsing and posting on SteemIt I have come across a problem that gives me angst regarding the Tag/Topic field for sorting of posts to "SubSteemIts" First let me say that it is miles ahead of reddit in terms of crossposting and simplicity, really makes content creation and discovery much more simplified. Reddit requires a separate posting for each subreddit you wish to share your post to, and the linking of such posts is not intuitive and is also limited by the rate of which you can post. This was to prevent spamming across several subreddits I assume. Which brings me to the first issue of SteemIt tags SPAM!!! Now for my example I will be picking on @themayor as I think most bitcoiners have a problem with self appointed political figures. Now Mr Mayor has made a post in #Greece, about buying bitcoin in Greece so very relevant to that topic. However, he didn't post it in #bitcoin as well, which is a critical flaw in your steemit strategy my friend. He did he post it in #models and #blocktrades and #blocktalk >:-( He may have even posted it in other tags but that brings me to my second point... Transparency and Discoverability Now something I've seen on other posts that I've adopted myself is declaring your crossposts since steemit.com only tells you the first tag As you can see, now users not only know about my community, but can also browse other tags easily for more information on the same topics or content! Think of this like the youtube suggestion bar beside the video your watching. You've probably lost an afternoon because it adds to the addictiveness of the site and linking of relevant content I recommend you all adopt this stratagy until site/platform changes are implemented to allow this to be standard in the bottom bar of the post page And now my final suggestion which could be Standardization Now being that steemit is so new, I can forgive a lot of these faults because "SubSteemIts" are still being created as people create new tags. However, a suggestion popup or label for some of the standard steemits could vastly improve problems like this New users can easily miss out on valuable Steem and visibility because they simple mistake what a standard SubSteem like #introduceyourself is suppose to be called Again I point to reddit on how this maybe improved even further by allowing subscriptions to Tags for custom pages please don't judge my tastes in subreddits Anyways hope you all consider this on your next post and enjoy the day Crossposted to #steem #improvements #siteimprovements #steemimprovements wait no one has created any improvement tags yet?? next post... night mode/dark theme :P

titleCORRECTED-Digital currency Steem soars to more than $150 mln in value in 2 weeks
bodyweeks@ (In headline, corrects name of currency to Steem from Steemit, and adds missing word) NEW YORK, July 12 (Reuters) - Steem, the digital currency behind the new social media website Steemit, soared more than 1,000 percent in value on Tuesday to over $150 million, two weeks after it first paid people who posted on its website, according to coinmarketcap.com. Steemit essentially is a website that rewards or pays users who post content that gets multiple thumbs up from the site's participants. The reward given is the steem currency. Content on the site is not limited to digital currencies and users have posted varied topics from lasagna to a trip to North Africa. "It's basically an incentivized social media platform," said Steemit's chief executive, Ned Scott, in an interview. The steem currency's price on Tuesday was $1.75, equivalent to a market cap of $151.8 million. That is the value of the 81.6 million steems in circulation. On July 4, when Steemit first paid users with steem for their content, the currency's value was only $13 million, according to Scott. Steem is the fifth-largest digital currency in terms of market cap. Coinmarket cap.com tracks a total of 657 digital currencies. Digital currencies have gained broad appeal among investors as a mechanism to transfer assets without a third party or clearing agency. Users who get the steem currency can then exchange it for bitcoins within the platform. They can use their bitcoins to pay for services or goods or hold them as an investment. Steemit is similar to social media website Reddit and Facebook in the way it operates. Unlike the two, however, Steemit is powered by blockchain, the underlying technology that anchors digital currencies such as bitcoin. The new social media website was launched on an experimental basis without the rewards on May 4. "There were many, many people looking at this project, several hundreds of users per day," said Scott. "And when they experienced that first payout on July 4, they bought something for their mother, they paid debt. And it suddenly felt real to everyone." Steems are created solely by the platform's blockchain, whereas bitcoin is generated through a mining process where a miner tries to solve a set of complex mathematical problems. Scott said the company had a "superangel" investor that helped it get off the ground last February. It will use this momentum to raise funds from institutional investors.
