      "body": "<center><a href=\"https://travelfeed.com/@seangold/the-land-of-fuego-adventures-in-guatemala-day-1\">Read this post on TravelFeed for the best experience</a></center><hr />\n\nHello and welcome back!<br><br>Today we'll recap my first full day in Antigua, getting the feel for the city and area.<br><br>My first night was a bit rough. I was still a bit off balance, as it being my first time in central America and the area I was staying in was a bit of a favela feeling area. Most of the night I heard stray animals fighting and cats jumping on tin roofs. Beyond the noise, it was tough listening to animals fighting and potentially hurting. But I managed to get some sleep and wake up fairly early.<br><br>The first thing I did when I got up was head to the roof of the home to look at the volcanos, as being at an elevated area compared to the main area of Antigua, this one of the few areas you can see them well.&nbsp;\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-18-01-048-sean_gold_231116_dsc6067_-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-18-01-735-sean_gold_231116_dsc6068_-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nThis was my first time seeing an active and erupting volcano. It was an incredible moment, as I stood in awe watching the plumes of smoke shoot up into the sky. After watching a couple of eruptions, I got ready to head out and get my first daytime feel for the city.<br>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-23-01-222-sean_gold_231116_dsc6076-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nAs I mentioned, I was staying just out of the main city, so I had to cross this main street everyday which usually had a constant traffic flow, no stop signs or traffic lights, so a bit tedious. After crossing, I made my way to the main square, getting a feel for the area.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-23-01-825-sean_gold_231116_dsc6096-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nAfter a short walk, I was in the main square.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-23-01-101-sean_gold_231116_dsc6098-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-23-01-258-sean_gold_231116_dsc6099_-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nIt was still fairly early, and the morning light was beautiful. And it really shined as I approached the park.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-23-01-666-sean_gold_231116_dsc6101-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-23-01-128-sean_gold_231116_dsc6105-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-23-01-714-sean_gold_231116_dsc6111-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nThe park, especially in this light, was magical. After spending a little time here, I started to feel a lot more comfortable.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-14-23-01-569-sean_gold_231116_dsc6114-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-15-00-01-697-sean_gold_231116_dsc6126-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nAfter spending some time here, I began to explore some more to get my bearings. At the bar the night before I was told about the main market and started to make my way there.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-15-00-01-830-sean_gold_231116_dsc6116_-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nJust about every street was picturesque. And after a little walking I made it to the market. The market consisted of an outer walking ring, and a dense inner market that was mostly sheltered. There's also the main bus station behind the market, which I checked out briefly, but we'll come back and talk more about that later. As I've probably mentioned, I'm not much of a food person and I knew there was a very cool McDonalds here, so I headed that way. On the way, I ran into a few more cool buses.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-15-01-01-084-sean_gold_231116_dsc6244-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-15-01-01-286-sean_gold_231116_dsc6247_-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-15-01-01-081-sean_gold_231116_dsc6251-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nI got to McDonalds and the prices were pretty cheap, so I got a few McFlurries and other snacks as I killed some time and too in the views. And the view was pretty amazing in the outside court yard of Vulcan Agua, but it was still pretty socked in the clouds as it had been the whole day.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-15-01-01-475-sean_gold_231116_dsc6261-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nAnd pretty much across the street from McDonalds was Little Caesars, and I saw that a whole pizza was only about 4$. I feel Little Caesars is super underrated, and I know, I'm in Antigua eating all this American fast food, judge me. So I decided I'd head over to see how it was later. Since it was getting dark out, I wanted to make sure I got some bottled water back to the house first, as the tap water isn't drinkable.<br>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2024-01-15-02-01-089-sean_gold_231116_dsc6272_-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nSo I headed back North towards where I was staying and just went into the first little shop I saw. I didn't have local currency yet, and the girl told me she'd take dollars, so I grabbed a couple bottles of water and a snack. It came out to 8$. I handed her the money, and she began to inspect it carefully. She then handed it back and told me it was too damaged to accept. Apparently the banks there won't accept bills that are too worn or damaged. Luckily I had a fresh 20$ bill and she accepted that. I dropped off the supplies and headed back out to see the town at night. The weather and temperature was perfect, the lighting was perfect, the ambience and music was perfect; everything was perfect. I sat there for a bit and just took it all in. I got the Hot N Ready at Little Caesars. I used my credit card, and strangely they asked for my ID to check for my 4$ pizza, but I guess that's just protocol. I hope you're well and glad you've come back to see my latest post! I'm excited to share with you my latest adventure! (even though I still haven't finished sharing *checks notes* any of my previous adventures?)\n\nThe backstory starts with a sale, as most of my adventures do. I found an Amtrak Rail Pass on sale for 300$, which would allow me to take any 10 Amtrak trains, except Acela trains, within 4 months from purchase. But once you take your first train, you have only 30 days to finish all travel, which is a little restrictive.<br><br>I've travelled many places, but mostly outside of the US, and I was excited and intrigued by the idea of seeing more of the US, and the idea of long train rides to new places was also very enticing. I went back and forth for days if I should buy it or not, and then I found it was completely refundable if I decide to not go, so I bought it and began planning.<br><br>I went over maps, time tables, and many reviews of travelling on Amtrak like I planned to do. I found routes that had interesting destinations as well as friends I could visit along the way. Most destinations only have 1 train a day, and some only 1 train every other day, so my planning had to be pretty precise and also try to account for the tendency for Amtrak trains to be hours late quite frequently.<br><br>After quite some research and a few route changes, as well as planning with friends, I settled on this route that would take me 8,500 miles, and involve over 200 hours of on train travel time! (It's the green highlight line I made)\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-037-amtrak-map-png\" width=\"1245\" height=\"649\" /></figure></center>\n\nI originally wanted to go down the East coast but the timing didn't make as much sense, and turns out it's very good I didn't do that, which I'll talk about later in this series.<br><br>With a plan in place, and ticket purchased, there was still a sense of unease, as all great adventures should have. Can I do this? Should I do this? What if this or that happens? Is this even worth doing? I contemplated cancelling the trip all the way up to the night before departure. But I packed my bag, and in doing so, the decision was made.<br>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-871-sgcam_20230426_111426131-jpg\" width=\"1534\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nThe day came and I had my first train to catch, so I went over everything one last time, and then headed to Boston's South Station to catch my first train to Chicago. It would be an overnight train taking roughly 22 hours.<br><br>I made it to South Station about an hour before my train departure and grabbed a bite to eat. Then the board showed my train boarding and I headed out to the tracks.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-669-sgcam_20230426_124017213-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1534\" /></figure></center>\n\nNow with this ticket you get only Coach Class, with no option to pay to upgrade, which I knew and was fine with, and mainly because Coach is actually quite amazing, especially compared to air travel coach. This was my first train:\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-775-sgcam_20230426_124257232-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1534\" /></figure></center>\n\nPlenty of space, more legroom than I needed, and chairs that convert pretty much into beds. I really couldn't have been more comfortable.\n\nSo I grabbed my seat and had no one next to me, and made myself at home. This was also my first trip with my new 50L travel photography backpack.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-306-sean_gold_230426_4260012_-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" /></figure></center>\n\nAnd then, just like that, we were on our way! It was exciting, but then the speed set in when after 2 hours we still hadn't left Massachusetts, hell, we hadn't even got half way through the state. Those were some of the longest hours of the trip, especially because it was very boring scenery. I was a little worried about what I had got myself into. But I just laid back, and enjoyed the ride.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-353-sgcam_20230426_163749621-jpg\" width=\"1534\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nThen we made our first \"long stop\" in Albany, NY, where we had an hour to wait while they joined the Boston and the NYC train into 1 train for the rest of the journey.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-01-06-341-sean_gold_230426_4260019_-jpg\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-417-sean_gold_230426_4260025_-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" /></figure></center>\n\nWe got to get off and walk around for a bit, and then it was back on the train.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-540-sean_gold_230426_4260032_-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" /></figure></center>\n\nNight fell, and I had a full day in Chicago the next day, so I decided to get some sleep early. I woke up briefly around midnight when about 40 or 50 Amish people boarded the train, which surprised me as I've never really encountered the Amish. I took a photo of the empty train stop in the night, and then went back to sleep.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-272-sean_gold_230426_4260034_-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" /></figure></center>\n\nWhile I slept, and quite well I'll add, the iron beast continued to roll through the night and I awoke to new landscapes and new views.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-06-02-00-06-235-sgcam_20230427_083333094-jpg\" width=\"1534\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nI was a few hours from my first destination, Chicago, which I would have about the whole day to explore before taking my next train that night.&nbsp;<br><br>But I'm going to save that for the next installment. It would be a long drive to get there, so first we made a stop at a small gas station to get some food!\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-03-15-00-03-249-20221029_155908-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nAnd took a little stroll around as well before we hit the road again.<br>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-03-15-00-03-122-20221029_155556-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nAs we're driving, we get some glimpses of the mountains and glaciers as we head further up the Island.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-03-15-00-03-342-sean_gold_221029_dsc9069-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nAnd as the day is on the cusp of twilight, we got our first views of the giant epic glaciers of Iceland!\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-03-15-00-03-213-sean_gold_221029_a290673-enhanced-nr-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-03-15-00-03-299-sean_gold_221029_a290675-enhanced-nr-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nFrom there we made our way to Hofn, found our campground, checked in, and made possibly the biggest decision of the trip, even though we didn't know it yet.<br><br>We decided to go to the famous epic beach even though it was night time to check it out. So we drive over and then find out to go to the beach you have to pay because it's actually private. At this point, we've seen a little bit of Aroura in the distance, and figure we're already here an might as well. So we paid the 5$ or so to head down the road to the beach.<br><br>We explored a bit, realized e went too far when we saw a radar station and went back.&nbsp;<br><br>And then, the sky began to glow.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-03-15-01-03-271-sean_gold_221029_dsc9106-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nAnd then I got an alert on my phone that there's a very high chance of a strong Aroura. So we set up and wait to see what would happen.\n\nAnd soon after the sky began to come alive! It was like looking at a digital billboard pixelate throughout the sky at its peak!\n\nHere's all the phases of the show we got, with the finale being at the end of this photo set! So I had to take another selfie too before we left.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-03-15-01-03-825-sean_gold_221029_dsc9142-_dxo-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nAnd then I tried to get at least one shot of the reflection pool, which I'm glad I did, and I'll tell you why shortly.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-03-15-01-03-111-sean_gold_221029_dsc9144-enhanced-nr-edit-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nAfter this we headed back to town an ended up at a Halloween party, which I'll cover in the next post. But to close this one out, off of a chance choice came possibly the greatest experience of this trip, one of the lights f course, but also, the next day a storm would blow in and we wouldn't even be able to visit this area in the day time which was very unfortunate.       "body": "<center><a href=\"https://travelfeed.io/@seangold/the-land-of-fire-and-ice-part-7-the-majestic-canyon-fjadrargljufur\">Read this post on TravelFeed.io for the best experience</a></center><hr />\n\nHello and welcome back!<br><br>Today we'll be picking up where we left off last time, as we were driving through the massive and seemingly endless mossy fields on our way to an amazing canyon, canyon&nbsp;Fjaðrárgljúfur! And no, I have no idea how to pronounce that.<br><br>I had seen many photos of this place over the years but never really had any idea where in Iceland it was or how hard it was to get to. So while planning this trip, I looked into it a bit and to my surprise it was actually on our route and not very hard to access either!<br><br>So we made our way out of the mossy area, and took a small side road, and then over a very makeshift looking small bridge, and then to a decent sized parking lot where the trail began. And when we got there, it wasn't even that busy. I expected a lot more people.<br><br>So first there was small bridge at the mouth of the canyon, so I started there to get a couple shots.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-20-22-02-368-sean_gold_221029_dsc9054-jpg\" width=\"1365\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nFrom there, I headed back to the main trail which ran along side of the canyon, and it was honestly one of the most amazing landscapes I've seen!\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-20-22-02-270-sean_gold_221029_a290592-edit-2-jpg\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-20-22-02-933-sean_gold_221029_a290596-orf_dxo_deepprime-edit-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-20-22-02-654-sean_gold_221029_a290603-jpg\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\nAnd this was just getting started! Unfortunately, that first photo was the only glimpse of sunlight we'd see as the clouds overtook the sky once again, but it also played into the vibe of this amazing spot.       "body": "<center><a href=\"https://travelfeed.io/@seangold/the-land-of-fire-and-ice-part-5-the-endless-mossy-fields\">Read this post on TravelFeed.io for the best experience</a></center><hr />\n\nHello Hveians and welcome back!&nbsp;\n\nToday we're going to pick up where we left off last time, just finishing up our visit to the black sand beaches and about to head off to our next location!<br><br>But on our way out we had to stop at one of the iconic Icelandic churches first!\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-840-sean_gold_221029_a290533-jpg\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-057-sean_gold_221029_a290544-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" /></figure></center>\n\nAfter that quick pit stop, we were back on the road in this misty/cloudy iconic Iceland weather.<br>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-985-sean_gold_221029_a290553-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nAfter a bit of driving, the skies opened up a bit and the weather began to change. We were driving through a small town and then we noticed a FULL huge rainbow and had to pull over to check it out!\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-585-20221029_125716-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" /></figure></center>\n\nAfter admiring the view for a bit, we headed off again to our next location, the moss fields!<br>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-126-sean_gold_221029_a290566-orf_dxo_deepprime-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1152\" /></figure></center>\n\nThese moss fields seemed to go on forever and they are the result of giant pumice fields from volcanoes that nothing can grow on, besides moss. So this moss has been growing here since the 1700's and this unique moss actually takes about 100 years to grow! I think before you were allowed to visit and explore more of the area, but now it's highly discouraged to walk on the mossy areas to protect it from further damage.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-571-sean_gold_221029_a290571-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nIt's truly surreal to see this endless expanse of moss!<br>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-018-sean_gold_221029_a290585-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" /></figure></center>\n\nAnd after a short walk on an approved trail through the moss, it was time to really see how endless this moss was by putting up the drone! Spoiler: It is endless.\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-584-sean_gold_221029dji_0011-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-518-sean_gold_221029dji_0014-_dxo-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1535\" /></figure></center>\n\n<center><figure><img src=\"https://img.travelfeed.io/seangold%2F2023-02-13-21-02-923-sean_gold_221029dji_0014-jpg\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" /></figure></center>\n\nI kind of wish I flew the drone a bit more here, but I did get some good shots and some good video as well, which I'll try to share some of that too!<br><br>That's where we'll end todays post, a bit of the shorter installments, but the next location is rather large, so to do both together would be a bit long for one post for my liking.<br><br>So what did you think?
