| title | Abandoned Industrial Rayon Corporation |
| body | I wish I had taken better photos when I had visited, but this was about 4, almost 5 years ago now. The Painesville rayon plant was built in 1938, just in time to provide reinforcing fabric needed for tires and other automotive products during World War II. Between $7,500,000 and $10,000,000 was put forth in order to build the factory. The company, originally known as the Industrial Fibre Company, had an annual output of about 12,500,000 pounds of rayon. This output was 1,000,000 pounds greater than another rayon plant in Covington. This synthetic fiber, created from a wood product called viscose, was heralded as "synthetic silk" in early Cleveland Press articles. The corporation was the very first to create a fiber of this kind. Even during the depression, when the US was hit with an extremely large unemployment rate, the rayon plant provided employment seven days a week. They were able to provide these jobs due to the large demand for rayon by the textile industry. The Rayon Corporation was the second largest employer in Lake County during the 1950s with 2500 workers. Much of the equipment used during the war was also created using rayon, made within this plant. Among this equipment were parachutes, clothing, and tire-cord used as a cheaper substitute for rubber. While rayon provided a great deal of items during the war, it also provided items for people around the world. With rayon being much cheaper to produce, the end result was cheaper, more affordable clothing, among other items. This could be seen as both good, and bad, as it was a partial contribution to the decline of the US textile industry. With an increasing production rate over the following years, noxious fumes were thrown into the city’s air. This lead to months worth of meetings, chemical research, and public hearings. Much of the city property had been damaged, and health problems in citizens arose from the large amounts of fumes in the air. Through World War II and after, synthetic fibers such as nylon and other polymers continued to create competition in the textile market place. Shortly after the war, the Industrial Rayon Corporation (as it was known by this time) was purchased by Midland-Ross Co. - another Cleveland company supporting the automotive industry. August 6, 1980 - the day everyone lost their jobs, when plant management announced the closure of their 43-year-old company. By this time, demand for polyester had sharply declined, as its use in tire yarn was much less applied in tire manufacturing. The 630-acre site was put up for sale, leaving 350 hourly and salaried workers in the dark. Far back and down an old, empty avenue; lined with the cracked remains of 1930's gaslight street lamps, sits Painesville's Industrial Rayon Corporation. The cooling towers overlook sections of remaining factory roof tops, while gusts of wind bury themselves into and out of a large section of the factory, now exposed to the elements. As I walked down the crumbling road leading to the entrance, I passed by the former offices and security booth, which sat across the lot where former employees would park their vehicles before beginning the work day. Finally reaching the entrance, I slipped inside to find myself surrounded by cracked tile walls, dilapidated ceilings, and a green glow of nature pushing up towards sun rays, peaking through areas void of a ceiling. I like to think of these as naturally created skylights. It sounds nice. I turned to the right and continued my stroll, looking up and down at the foundation crumbling around me. From across the room, I had spotted a doorway, glowing bright with sunlight from inside. I could see the cracked and broken room, coated with a bright green chroma. Upon my entrance through what was left of the doorway, I found myself stood before a beautiful forest of nature's own reclamation. Brilliant greens bounced the bright sunlight to glossy, tan, tiled walls. Over the next 2 years, I would continue to visit at different times of the year to watch how nature affected our man-made structures we so carelessly left behind. It’s interesting how nature and wildlife can take on different characteristics, and different lives within these places. On the opposite side of this enormous factory, a flutter of birds scattered the space inside of a massive control room, surrounding me with the echoing sound of birdsong, reverberating off the walls of massive factory rooms. It's almost as if you can see for miles past railings and moss, coating the tiled floor. Moss binds to tiles, as they crumble up the wall in a jagged, displaced manner. As nature wishes, it pushes them off one by one, letting them fall to a collective pile at the wall’s base. Sometimes I sit and think to myself 'did they ever wonder what their investments would look like to people in the future, or even what would become of it all?' What would history think of us today? |

"body": "I wish I had taken better photos when I had visited, but this was about 4, almost 5 years ago now.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Painesville rayon plant was built in 1938, just in time to provide reinforcing fabric needed for tires and other automotive products during World War II. Between $7,500,000 and $10,000,000 was put forth in order to build the factory. The company, originally known as the Industrial Fibre Company, had an annual output of about 12,500,000 pounds of rayon. This output was 1,000,000 pounds greater than another rayon plant in Covington. This synthetic fiber, created from a wood product called viscose, was heralded as \"synthetic silk\" in early Cleveland Press articles. The corporation was the very first to create a fiber of this kind. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEven during the depression, when the US was hit with an extremely large unemployment rate, the rayon plant provided employment seven days a week. They were able to provide these jobs due to the large demand for rayon by the textile industry. The Rayon Corporation was the second largest employer in Lake County during the 1950s with 2500 workers.\n\n\n\n\n\nMuch of the equipment used during the war was also created using rayon, made within this plant. \n\n\n\n\n\nWith an increasing production rate over the following years, noxious fumes were thrown into the city’s air. This lead to months worth of meetings, chemical research, and public hearings. Much of the city property had been damaged, and health problems in citizens arose from the large amounts of fumes in the air.\n\nThrough World War II and after, synthetic fibers such as nylon and other polymers continued to create competition in the textile market place. Shortly after the war, the Industrial Rayon Corporation (as it was known by this time) was purchased by Midland-Ross Co. - another Cleveland company supporting the automotive industry.\n\n\n\n\n\nAugust 6, 1980 - the day everyone lost their jobs, when plant management announced the closure of their 43-year-old company. | title | Abandoned - Once the World's Most Famous Boxing Ring |
| body | The building which would come to be home to this great boxing venue was actually originally constructed for entirely different purposes. Before its life as a boxing venue, the Blue Horizon was constructed as three four-story Second Empire style houses in 1865. Second Empire was an architectural style largely popular nearer to the second half of the nineteenth century, spanning into early years of the twentieth century. The name derives from use of architectural elements commonly found in structures during the era of the Second French Empire. While 17th century Renaissance foundations transformed, they acquired a mix of earlier European styles, with the most notable being Baroque. This was often combined with mansard roofs or low, square based domes. This style quickly spread throughout Europe and across the Atlantic, evolving as Baroque Revival architecture. In the United States, this style became widely used in the design of municipal and corporate buildings. The buildings were originally constructed to appeal to the newly rich, however around 1912-1914, the properties were sold to the Loyal Order of Moose. Carl Berger – a Philadelphia-born architect – oversaw altercations made to the homes in 1914 to suite the fraternal lodge, including the addition of a ballroom, auditorium and bar that would later become a jazz bar for the public. The Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #54 held over 20,000 members by 1920, breaking records at that point for the highest membership of any fraternal lodge in the world. With membership reaching well over 40,000 during the late 1920s, plans were made for expansion of the building, unfortunately with the Great Depression sweeping the nation, the lodge was forced to close and plans were abandoned. Though it would be many years before boxing would become a regular event within the building, lodge #54 held the first two boxing matches during the Moose era, one on March 1st, and another on March 28th of 1938. The March 28th match featured heavyweight Willie Reddish, who would later train Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier. In 1961, building ownership changed hands when Jimmy Toppi Sr. purchased the property for $85,000 – which today is generally the price of a McDonald’s Big Mac with extra sauce and a large Coke. The building would take on a new name, when Jimmy renamed the building after “Beyond the Blue Horizon” – a song from the 1930 film Monte Carlo. With renovations underway, the Blue Horizon would be on its way to becoming one of the greatest, and most historic boxing venues of all time. Once renovations were complete, boxing shows became regular entertainment within the Blue Horizon on November 3, 1961. The first event held featured Hall of Famer George Benton pitted against Chico Corsey. Regular shows were held at the Blue Horizon in its early days of life as a boxing venue. Thanks to a grant from Madison Square Garden, promoter Marty Kramer was able to put on these matches, helping to develop young fighters. During 1963 – 1964, Jose Stable, Dick Turner, Harold Johnson, Henry Hank, Stanley Hayward and Curtis Cokes were seen televised nationally across three separate events at the Blue Horizon. There would be a 3 year break from any fights, after May 26, 1966 when “Gypsy” Joe Harris took a 10 round decision over Johnny Knight in a fight promoted by Lou Lucchese. September 30, 1969 – the first event held after three quiet years, when J. Russell Peltz had his first promotion of his Hall of Fame career. This event set a record in venue attendance, with an attendance of 1,606 people. In 1971, Peltz left the Blue Horizon after 31 cards to promote at larger venues, such as the Spectrum. Peltz returned in 1974, continuing to promote more fights at the Blue Horizon than anyone else in its history. This era brought many greats, such as Matthew Saad Muhammad, Bernard Hopkins, Cyclone Hart, Tim Witherspoon and Bennie Briscoe. Peltz would come and go, promoting cards until promoting a final event in 2009. Over the course of its life, the Blue Horizon has hosted international, regional and state title fights. Of the many historic occurrences mentioned above, a quite historically significant one would be in 1998, when Veronica Michael became licensed as the first female African American boxing promoter in the state of Pennsylvania. She would come to promote bouts featuring established fighters such as Eddie Chambers, Yusef Mack, and Lajuan Simon. In 2008, she was named one of the top 50 women in business in the state of Pennsylvania by Governor Ed Rendell. Michael had worked to turn this beautiful venue into a cultural center for the neighborhood, hosting special events, meetings, cabarets, weddings and more. Due to tax problems, the Blue Horizon was closed for good in 2010. In January of 2011, West Philadelphia developer Mosaic Development Partners received a grant of 6 million dollars in order to build and 18 million dollar hotel/restaurant complex, complete with jazz bar and fitness center in place of the once great Blue Horizon. Knowing that these developers are from West Philadelphia, it’s no wonder Will Smith left – these were probably the same people that pushed him around. In July 2013, Mosaic’s plans called for the venue to be demolished, making way for a luxurious parking garage for their fancy new hotel. As of the beginning of 2017, demolition is underway, and we will soon welcome a shiny, brand new hotel to our landscape instead of, ya know, saving the history, even perhaps building around it so that we may still share its story with the world. Staring the ring down, I felt like a cat, hyped on catnip in a room full off dangling red and blue yarn. It may have been the fact that I was given the opportunity to photograph an incredibly historic space, standing in the place were many great and famous fighters, actors, actresses and others once did. It may have also been the fact that I was limited to a 30 minute window to capture this amazing place, knowing that the city would be in within the week to continue deconstruction of the entire venue to make way for a parking garage. I’m pretty sure it was largely a combination of both of these things. I mean, can it really get any shittier than that? It’s like the city is dumping pieces of its resume into a toilet. I can surely say that I am glad to have been given the opportunity to capture this once great venue, and share its story as best I could. All we can do from here is watch sadly, while more neglected history crumbles into the cold dirt of our Earth. |

"body": "\n\nThe building which would come to be home to this great boxing venue was actually originally constructed for entirely different purposes. Before its life as a boxing venue, the Blue Horizon was constructed as three four-story Second Empire style houses in 1865. Second Empire was an architectural style largely popular nearer to the second half of the nineteenth century, spanning into early years of the twentieth century. The name derives from use of architectural elements commonly found in structures during the era of the Second French Empire.\n\nWhile 17th century Renaissance foundations transformed, they acquired a mix of earlier European styles, with the most notable being Baroque. This was often combined with mansard roofs or low, square based domes.\n\nThis style quickly spread throughout Europe and across the Atlantic, evolving as Baroque Revival architecture. In the United States, this style became widely used in the design of municipal and corporate buildings.\n\nThe buildings were originally constructed to appeal to the newly rich, however around 1912-1914, the properties were sold to the Loyal Order of Moose. With membership reaching well over 40,000 during the late 1920s, plans were made for expansion of the building, unfortunately with the Great Depression sweeping the nation, the lodge was forced to close and plans were abandoned.\n\nThough it would be many years before boxing would become a regular event within the building, lodge #54 held the first two boxing matches during the Moose era, one on March 1st, and another on March 28th of 1938. The March 28th match featured heavyweight Willie Reddish, who would later train Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier.\n\nIn 1961, building ownership changed hands when Jimmy Toppi Sr. purchased the property for $85,000 – which today is generally the price of a McDonald’s Big Mac with extra sauce and a large Coke. The building would take on a new name, when Jimmy renamed the building after “Beyond the Blue Horizon” – a song from the 1930 film Monte Carlo. With renovations underway, the Blue Horizon would be on its way to becoming one of the greatest, and most historic boxing venues of all time. Once renovations were complete, boxing shows became regular entertainment within the Blue Horizon on November 3, 1961.\n\nThe first event held featured Hall of Famer George Benton pitted against Chico Corsey. There would be a 3 year break from any fights, after May 26, 1966 when “Gypsy” Joe Harris took a 10 round decision over Johnny Knight in a fight promoted by Lou Lucchese.\n\nSeptember 30, 1969 – the first event held after three quiet years, when J. Peltz would come and go, promoting cards until promoting a final event in 2009.\n\nOver the course of its life, the Blue Horizon has hosted international, regional and state title fights. In 2008, she was named one of the top 50 women in business in the state of Pennsylvania by Governor Ed Rendell. | title | The Abandoned Pontiac Silverdome Stadium pre-demolition |
| body | As each 15,000-pound cable whipped down through seat after seat, down went the massive roof of Pontiac’s Silverdome stadium. These huge steel ropes went swinging through the stadium, slicing through the stands, causing destruction with the force of a bomb to butterfly wings, a hot knife through soft butter, decimating each concrete wall like it was nothing, knocking out entire sections of stairs and bending metal like a child angry at their Play-Doh. We could see where these had cut through, as they had created a straight line uninterrupted in even the slightest bit by any obstacle standing in their path. The idea of a grand stadium for Michigan was proposed in 1966, with urban planner Don Davidson acting as partial designer and architect on the project. The Pontiac Silverdome Stadium was built for $55.7 million dollars, completed and opened in 1975. Architects O’Dell, Hewlett and Luckenbach had acted as the dome’s main architects, fashioning the design after the Ancient Roman Colosseum. In 2009, the stadium was sold at auction for $583,000. This exhibits quite a great financial shift in the area’s economy, heavily showcasing how much has changed. Nearly 1.5 million cubic yards of earth were moved during the construction of this huge stadium, while 1,700 tons of structural steel held the enormous structure together. Overhead, covering the entire stadium was a dome; a 10-acre Teflon-coated fiberglass roof to encase what would come to be a central stadium for Super Bowls, concerts, events, hey maybe even the Pope would grace the seats of this stadium. Oh wait, he did. With 80,000 seats rounding the stadium’s sides, the Silverdome was quite a large and impressive stadium to stand atop and just marvel at. Of these 80,000 seats, English rock band Led Zeppelin broke a record, when on April 30, 1977 ticket sales hit a record high and the band played in front of 76,229 fans. Following closely behind these numbers, The Who performed, holding the very first concert inside this stadium during the year of 1975, playing for 75,962 fans. Among all other musically themed events to take place within the dome’s walls, in 1994, Pink Floyd had performed “Dark Side of The Moon” in its entirety for the first time since 1975, and following shortly after, The Rolling Stones welcomed their new album “Voodoo Lounge,” bringing the tour to The Silverdome in 1994. As I traversed the building, curved corridors eventually led me directly into a former dining hall. The hall appeared to have once been a very beautiful and elegant space to enjoy a meal, while at the same time receiving an amazing view of the current game or show below. Large glass windows stand from floor to ceiling across one end to the other, from bar to bar. From these windows, the entire stadium grounds outside are visible, and where some windows have been shattered, nature begins to welcome itself in for a drink. At the base of many of these glass panels, where water damage has invited its way into the carpet, a brand new, bright green carpet of moss has begun a natural installation. Where condiments sit atop shelves, a jungle of green begins to consume them from the daily sun welcomed in through the massive glass panes. As you wander past tables, the entire room smells of water damage, while the stadium view remains as beautiful as ever. It’s like looking off into the apocalypse. While a mossy carpet sat at my feet, I stared through an open panel, welcoming the cold winter breeze to my face, chilling my skin as I study the destruction below. Such a huge space, once filled with so much energy now sits an open shell, victim to the elements. Wires hang from balcony tiers, windows remain shattered, some fogged over with a grime and residue from dripping water, while old scoreboards and electronic panels sit fallen in the stands, crashing about as gusts of wind flutter into and out of the stadium. We traveled down to center field, where I found myself taken away by such a large-scale destruction surrounding me in each and every way. I could only imagine the feeling of being surrounded by 80,000 screaming fans, all eyes on you. The silence was so great; you could almost hear the screaming of fans in the howling and whistling of each strong wind. I truly felt that I was lost in a reality shift, thrown into a life after people. I paced the small remaining pieces of AstroTurf thinking about how many famous and important people had once walked the same space that I am, and in how drastically different of a light. The large crowds would cheer and heaters would buzz, helping to heat the dome while the snow would melt away, but without a working system to generate heat, snow and ice piled up year after year until January of 2013 when the dome had finally come down. As I found myself balancing at the tip-top edge of this stadium’s roof, I looked out across the skyline, and though I knew there was life outside these walls, the world felt quiet and empty. |
