      "body": "When asked about the difference between art and science, Neil De Grasse Tyson recently stated: “Without Beethoven, no one would have ever created the 5th Symphony. Without Einstein, maybe it would have taken us another 100 years, and the coordinated effort of many scientists, but we would have still discovered the theory of relativity.”**Art means creation. Science means discovery.** Yet both are of **equal and crucial importance** to the development of humankind.\n\nNowadays, we owe all the technological advancements surrounding us to the latter: **the scientific method.** This amazing 5-step process is the best method we have come up with for processing information about the natural world in the pursuit of truth: we observe, launch hypotheses based on those observations, we test these hypotheses, measure and interpret the results which the experiments yield, and reach a conclusion to be published. Thanks to this instrument, we now have life-saving medicine, electricity, satellites orbiting the planet, and **a much deeper understanding of the world around us.**\n\nHowever, as important as Einstein was, most of the fore mentioned perks were the result of a coordinated effort of teams of scientists. Yet, have you ever considered how scientists are able to enhance our daily lives through their work? No, it’s not as depicted by Rick Sanchez (and trust me, we wish it was), but it is still quite entertaining, in its way. First,  you have to **think of a research proposal**; what you want to discover, and more important, how you intend to prove your discovery. This can be achieved with consuming knowledge yet most of it is behind so called **paywalls and not accessible to everyone**. Next, you have to find **a team of researchers**. This is done through countless hours of writing emails to other scientists, or headhunting through the university. With this part over, the “fun” part begins: **securing funding** for your experiment and publishing the observed results. These are the most tiresome steps. Many scientists, with various research proposals, are pitted against each other, fighting for the same financing sources. Then, with the publishing industry deciding what information is print-worthy, and what is not, there’s a struggle to have results published. In an ideal world, all science should be print-worthy, especially the very neglected *“no-results were found”* part.\n\nConsidering this situation, which *encumbers the whole scientific process*, we have developed a platform reuniting all **3 elements of the research lifecycle**, so that scientists are able to actually focus on science, rather than other unproductive, time-consuming activities.\n<center>\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXp6wS9akm56haFbomAwrXX5f2X1dtEqvZdE5DbYrHFL7/image.png)\n</center>\n<center> Scientific Lifecycle </center>\n\n\nFigure I offers you a glimpse at the highlights of the scientific lifecycle as proposed by Scienceroot. Each branch — Collaboration, Funding, and Publishing — is detailed in the coming sections. Only one question remains: How is all of this possible?\n\nThe cornerstone of the Scienceroot project is represented by our *blockchain based cryptocurrency*, called **Science Token (ST)**. We intend to build **Scienceroot** in such way so it can become the **go-to platform** for all scientist where **all of their needs may be met.** This will in turn allow us to enhance the performance of the platform in all of its aspects — attracting more and more consistent financing sources on Scienceroot, allowing more and more transparency in the publishing criteria, speeding up the whole scientific process, from research hypothesis to publishing time, and even securing funding for our own Scienceroot Fund (Section III), which the community will be able to invest as it sees fit.\n\n### I. Furthermore, they will be able to discuss the **acquisition of materials and equipment**, and *even exchange money* amongst each other i.e. through tipping, or through conversion from other forms of currencies in Science Token.\n\n\n### II. THE FUNDING LIBRARY  \n— the place where most financing sources, like **research grants** offered by various stakeholders, may be found **indexed**. Secured through **blockchain and smart contract technology**, anyone could *donate any amount to scientists* trying to answer a specific query. *Everybody benefits from the work done by scientists, so we propose that everybody should also be able to support their work in a direct manner.* However, the main objective of science is to help us expand our knowledge, and in order to achieve that, the information needs to be published for other researchers to have access to that information in order to verify or build upon it. \nFurthermore institutions and foundations could market their grants through a more secure method, leveraging the power of blockchain technology to track and configure the expenditure of grant money more easily with the immutable ledger.\nThis brings us to the last element of the research cycle, and the last component of the Scienceroot platform: our scientific journal.\n\n### III. THE SCIENCEROOT JOURNAL \n— an open access journal, offering publishing opportunities to all scientists, and ensuring an efficient publishing process through our **AI-assisted** pre-review and **peer-reviewers compensation system.**\n\nThe access to the Journal will be enabled through registration on our platform, and all submitted articles will be *free for access* for all registered users. They are the ones who fact check the submitted articles, and we believe the whole publishing process will be enhanced through providing a rewarding compensation system for them. Another 20% of profits will be redirected towards the **Scienceroot Fund**, to be *distributed towards research proposals* as decided by the Scienceroot community. Both the **Journal** and the **Fund** will be divided **amongst specific research domains** such as Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Social Sciences, etc.\n\nI mentioned Neil De Grasse Tyson in the beginning of this article.       "title": "Scienceroot is Leveraging Blockchain Technology to Transform the Scientific and Research Community",
      "body": "The discoveries made through pure scientific research have the potential to cure disease, save the environment, fend off starvation, and improve everyone’s quality of life. They are arguably the most important contributions being made to the advancement of human kind.\n\nThe current system of attaining funding, collaborating, and publishing findings however, is outdated, inefficient, and ready for disruption.\n\nScienceroot is a project that aims to leverage the decentralizing power of blockchain technology and the incentivizing power of cryptoeconomics to solve the biggest problems with the status quo.\n\nLet’s go through each of the problems in detail and how Scienceroot can solve them:\n\n**Funding**\n\nFunding for pure research is increasingly in short supply. According to a [2016 OECD report](http://www.keepeek.com/Digital-Asset-Management/oecd/science-and-technology/oecd-science-technology-and-innovation-outlook-2016_sti_in_outlook-2016-en#.WEmqCXecZdA), R&D spending by governments has been declining in many countries as policy priorities such as state pensions, health and social care are absorbing a growing share of public resources.\n\nAs governments struggle to pay the bills to support their aging societies while tax revenue is declining, the future of funding for scientific research may indeed follow the crowd-funding model currently being deployed by blockchain companies. 2017 has seen [almost $4 billion](https://www.coinschedule.com/stats.html) raised through a new funding model known as the Initial Coin Offering (ICO). The ICO model enables micro-contributions on a global scale with almost zero of the inefficiencies traditionally associated with transaction fees and the cost of employing a trusted intermediary.\n\nBlockchain technology offers the possibility to create a non-inflationary currency which can be exchanged instantly regardless of the user’s location. This makes it much easier for both the global scientific and non-scientific community to get directly involved in promoting science by investing their money in a worthy cause.\n\nScienceroot is following in the footsteps of the non-profit blockchain project [Einsteinium](https://www.emc2.foundation/), which has the philanthropic objective of funding scientific research. But Scienceroot is much more than just a funding platform.\n\n**Publishing**\n\nThe current journal publishing system does not sufficiently incentivize the sharing of research and therefore does not efficiently share knowledge globally. In the current system, journal contributors are incentivized only by the necessity to publish their work in order to be acknowledged in the world of academia. According to the 2015 “STM Report: An overview of scientific and scholarly journal publishing,” a typical reviewer spends just five hours per research paper and reviews only about eight articles per year. These numbers are so small because contributors are not rewarded for their time. Additionally, outdated submission and editorial technology combined with a shortage of qualified reviewers (due the lack of incentive) results in long waiting times for the reviewing and publishing of article. The status quo is stifling the advancement of science.\n\nThree aspects of blockchain technology combine to solve the above problems. First, blockchain reduces costs by eliminating the need for an intermediary. In the case of journals, this typically represents about 15% of the total publishing cost. Second, blockchain efficiently enables payments to be made on a global scale (as described above). Third, blockchain offers economic incentivizes. With scientists having the potential to obtain profits from their published work and peer-reviewers receiving compensation for their contributions, the quality and quantity of shared research should increase dramatically (to everyone’s benefit).\n\nScienceroot has developed a system that can achieve all of the above benefits using blockchain smart contract technology to ensure an unbiased process and artificial intelligence to ensure efficient automation. By offering well deserved rewards to contributors while streamlining the submission and review process, Scienceroot will drive the scholarly community to new heights. Details of this system, which comprise both the first stage as well as the heart of the Scienceroot project, can be found in the [Scienceroot whitepaper](https://www.scienceroot.com/whitepaper.pdf).\n\n**Collaboration**\n\nIn order to produce ground-breaking research, efficient collaboration tools are needed. The status quo is a disparate array of loosely connected forums and bulletin boards. It can be a particular challenge for scientists to verify the credentials of potential collaborators, especially in a globalized research context.\n\nHere again, blockchain technology offers a solution. Blockchain projects such as [Civic](https://www.civic.com/) are currently in the process of building a personal verification system that can easily be integrated into other platforms while protecting the personal information of participants. A potential collaborator’s credentials, once verified by a system like Civic, can be instantly confirmed to third parties while revealing nothing else about them.\n\nAdditionally by employing blockchain smart contracts in the sharing of information and intellectual property rights along the collaboration process, Scienceroot eliminates the need for the middlemen. As the Scienceroot Journal expands, it has the potential to become a critical point of both connection and protection for the global science community.\n\n**Finding Grants and Jobs**\n\nThe current process of applying for grants is inefficient due to the lack of organization of funding opportunities available to researchers. The process of finding a grant which best suits a scientist’s needs is made even more difficult because of an abundance of grant-related scams, confusing ads, and subscription-based directories. The need for a standardized, transparent and centralized platform which connects applicants directly to funding organizations is now bigger than ever. Scientists need a place to allow them to have an overview of funding options, a chance to apply for grants and a way of accessing new opportunities in their field.\n\nHere again blockchain technology has the power to streamline this process. Smart contracts could be written to, for example, only release portions of a grant as specific milestones are reached. Scienceroot anticipates the network effects triggered by the introduction of the Scienceroot journal and extended by the collaboration platform, will feed the grants and jobs platform in a synchronistic fashion.\n\n**Storage and Content**\n\nA final component that is again sorely lacking in the status quo, is the storage of research data. While great strides have been taken over the last decade to store data in digital form across multiple locations, there is still the issue of sensitive data being susceptible to hacking. Anytime a large of amount of data is stored on a centralized server, it becomes a target for hackers.\n\nHere blockchain technology — specifically the [Interplanetary File System (IPFS)](https://ipfs.io/), a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol to make the web faster, safer, and more open — has been proven to efficiently store data in a distributed and decentralized fashion that makes it essentially impossible to hack.\n\nThis gives Scienceroot the means to create a decentralized archive for the entire database of scientific, technical, and medical content to which anyone at anytime can have access.       "body": "The discoveries made through pure scientific research have the potential to cure disease, save the environment, fend off starvation, and improve everyone’s quality of life. They are arguably the most important contributions being made to the advancement of human kind.\n\nThe current system of attaining funding, collaborating, and publishing findings however, is outdated, inefficient, and ready for disruption.\n\nScienceroot is a project that aims to leverage the decentralizing power of blockchain technology and the incentivizing power of cryptoeconomics to solve the biggest problems with the status quo.\n\nLet’s go through each of the problems in detail and how Scienceroot can solve them:\n\n**Funding**\n\nFunding for pure research is increasingly in short supply. According to a [2016 OECD report](http://www.keepeek.com/Digital-Asset-Management/oecd/science-and-technology/oecd-science-technology-and-innovation-outlook-2016_sti_in_outlook-2016-en#.WEmqCXecZdA), R&D spending by governments has been declining in many countries as policy priorities such as state pensions, health and social care are absorbing a growing share of public resources.\n\nAs governments struggle to pay the bills to support their aging societies while tax revenue is declining, the future of funding for scientific research may indeed follow the crowd-funding model currently being deployed by blockchain companies. 2017 has seen [almost $4 billion](https://www.coinschedule.com/stats.html) raised through a new funding model known as the Initial Coin Offering (ICO). The ICO model enables micro-contributions on a global scale with almost zero of the inefficiencies traditionally associated with transaction fees and the cost of employing a trusted intermediary.\n\nBlockchain technology offers the possibility to create a non-inflationary currency which can be exchanged instantly regardless of the user’s location. This makes it much easier for both the global scientific and non-scientific community to get directly involved in promoting science by investing their money in a worthy cause.\n\nScienceroot is following in the footsteps of the non-profit blockchain project [Einsteineum](https://www.emc2.foundation/), which has the philanthropic objective of funding scientific research. But Scienceroot is much more than just a funding platform.\n\n**Publishing**\n\nThe current journal publishing system does not sufficiently incentivize the sharing of research and therefore does not efficiently share knowledge globally. In the current system, journal contributors are incentivized only by the necessity to publish their work in order to be acknowledged in the world of academia. According to the 2015 “STM Report: An overview of scientific and scholarly journal publishing,” a typical reviewer spends just five hours per research paper and reviews only about eight articles per year. These numbers are so small because contributors are not rewarded for their time. Additionally, outdated submission and editorial technology combined with a shortage of qualified reviewers (due the lack of incentive) results in long waiting times for the reviewing and publishing of article. The status quo is stifling the advancement of science.\n\nThree aspects of blockchain technology combine to solve the above problems. First, blockchain reduces costs by eliminating the need for an intermediary. In the case of journals, this typically represents about 15% of the total publishing cost. Second, blockchain efficiently enables payments to be made on a global scale (as described above). Third, blockchain offers economic incentivizes. With scientists having the potential to obtain profits from their published work and peer-reviewers receiving compensation for their contributions, the quality and quantity of shared research should increase dramatically (to everyone’s benefit).\n\nScienceroot has developed a system that can achieve all of the above benefits using blockchain smart contract technology to ensure an unbiased process and artificial intelligence to ensure efficient automation. By offering well deserved rewards to contributors while streamlining the submission and review process, Scienceroot will drive the scholarly community to new heights. The status quo is a disparate array of loosely connected forums and bulletin boards. It can be a particular challenge for scientists to verify the credentials of potential collaborators, especially in a globalized research context.\n\nHere again, blockchain technology offers a solution. Blockchain projects such as [Civic](https://www.civic.com/) are currently in the process of building a personal verification system that can easily be integrated into other platforms while protecting the personal information of participants. A potential collaborator’s credentials, once verified by a system like Civic, can be instantly confirmed to third parties while revealing nothing else about them.\n\nAdditionally by employing blockchain smart contracts in the sharing of information and intellectual property rights along the collaboration process, Scienceroot eliminates the need for the middlemen. As the Scienceroot Journal expands, it has the potential to become a critical point of both connection and protection for the global science community.\n\n**Finding Grants and Jobs**\n\nThe current process of applying for grants is inefficient due to the lack of organization of funding opportunities available to researchers. The process of finding a grant which best suits a scientist’s needs is made even more difficult because of an abundance of grant-related scams, confusing ads, and subscription-based directories. The need for a standardized, transparent and centralized platform which connects applicants directly to funding organizations is now bigger than ever. Scientists need a place to allow them to have an overview of funding options, a chance to apply for grants and a way of accessing new opportunities in their field.\n\nHere again blockchain technology has the power to streamline this process. Smart contracts could be written to, for example, only release portions of a grant as specific milestones are reached. Scienceroot anticipates the network effects triggered by the introduction of the Scienceroot journal and extended by the collaboration platform, will feed the grants and jobs platform in a synchronistic fashion.\n\n**Storage and Content**\n\nA final component that is again sorely lacking in the status quo, is the storage of research data. While great strides have been taken over the last decade to store data in digital form across multiple locations, there is still the issue of sensitive data being susceptible to hacking. Anytime a large of amount of data is stored on a centralized server, it becomes a target for hackers.\n\nHere blockchain technology — specifically the [Interplanetary File System (IPFS)](https://ipfs.io/), a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol to make the web faster, safer, and more open — has been proven to efficiently store data in a distributed and decentralized fashion that makes it essentially impossible to hack.\n\nThis gives Scienceroot the means to create a decentralized archive for the entire database of scientific, technical, and medical content to which anyone at anytime can have access.
