In a video for SchiffGold, Peter Schiff said stock market investors "finally took notice of the carnage that was going on in the bond market." On Thursday, the price of gold popped, rising nearly 3%. The narrative is that this is a normal bull market correction. Peter said nothing could be further from the truth. In 2008, we had a dollar rally and a sell-off in gold - at least initially. titlePeter Schiff Talks Bitcoin and Gold with Ivan on Tech
bodyPeter Schiff recently appeared on Ivan on Tech for a wide-ranging interview. Ivan and Peter talked cryptocurrency, gold, government debt, fiat currency, the dollar and more. Ivan is one of the foremost experts on cryptocurrency. He is an international speaker, blockchain educator, software developer and data scientist. Ivan and Peter don't see eye-to-eye on everything, but they did manage to find some common ground. If you are interested in cryptocurrencies and gold, you will find their friendly debate both entertaining and informative.

Highlights from the Interview Early in the interview, Ivan asked Peter to describe the economy for a 5-year-old.
To a 5-year-old? I don't know. Maybe it's because all we eat is ice cream and cupcakes, and we don't eat anything healthy. You know, basically, the problem is debt, the problem is excess consumption, the fact that we just continue to borrow money to buy imported products that we can never afford to repay with legitimate exports. Politicians continue to promise everything to voters so that they can keep getting reelected, but none of these promises can be kept and the debts continue to pile up. The problem with the global economy is they continue to finance the debts. They continue to loan money to Americans that Americans will never repay. The continue to pretend these worthless IOUs are legitimate assets. So, you have an entire monetary system that is underpinned by a dollar that is ultimately going to collapse. And all these fiat currencies, rather than being backed by legitimate money, which would render them legitimate currencies - rather than backing currencies by gold - they back currencies with dollars which themselves are backed by nothing."
That led to a deeper discussion of debt. Peter pointed out the problem is the US doesn't have the money to pay off all the debt it has piled up, at least not in a legitimate way. It will have to print money, and that will collapse the dollar. People will get their money back, but they won't be able to buy very much with it. From there, Peter and Ivan discussed the role of gold. Peter emphasized that gold is money. Paper money is fine if it is backed by gold. But when you start printing more money than you have gold to back it up, problems start.
I advise people to own gold because I do believe that gold will be remonetized, that this monetary experiment is going to end in failure, that the world is going to go back to the system we were on prior to Nixon taking us off the gold standard in 1971 ... I think we're going to go back to what existed pre-Bretton Woods where each country is going to back its currency by gold. They're not going to back their currency with somebody elses currency. They're going to back their currency with real money. To do that, the price of gold is going to go much higher. "
This moved the discussion into the realm of cryptocurrency. Ivan pointed out that with cryptos, we can now transfer value across the internet. Cryptocurrencies cannot be replicated. They can't be copied. Their supply is fixed. Ivan asked, "What is the main reason you don't see Bitcoin as digital gold and instead you call it fool's gold?"
You say you can transfer value. What you're not transferring is value but the perception of value. I mean, the Bitcoin itself does not have any useful value the way gold does. I mean, there are things I can actually do with gold even if it's not money. There are actually things that it can be used for. So, if you just have a Bitcoin and you're just going to use it to exchange with somebody else, there's nothing you can do with it by yourself."
Peter also pointed out that gold is scarce because of its unique properties. "Gold is gold." Nothing else can be gold. While there are limits on the number of Bitcoins, there isn't any limit on the number of cryptocurrencies in general.
You can have an infinite supply of digital currencies that are identical in what they can do. In fact, a lot of the alt-coins that have been created are actually superior to Bitcoin in their ease of use, or their cost of use, or the speed of the transactions. And so, the supply there is endless."
Peter suggested one way a cryptocurrency might work is if it is backed by gold.
There is a history of privately created currency backed by real money, and so you could certainly do the same thing by a private party issuing a digital currency that was also backed by gold. In fact, that would work much better."
Peter said in effect, right now people are trying to create money out of thin air with cryptos and that eventually, this approach will implode. Ivan agreed that there is a great deal of speculation in the world of cryptos and conceded that there may be a bubble that will burst in the future. But he took issue with Peter's assertion that Bitcoin has no useful value in and of itself, pointing to the underlying blockchain technology as a tangible source of intrinsic value.
When it comes to utility, it's not only about doing transactions, although that is huge in countries with hyperinflation ... If you look at the prices in those countries for Bitcoin, they are a lot higher than the prices in the West because you actually have a huge demand for something that is not government money."
Peter countered that the transaction costs associated with Bitcoin make it virtually useless in poor countries. The volatility of Bitcoin also makes it impossible to price products. But with companies like GoldMoney, people in poor countries can already engage in transactions inexpensively using gold. This allows them to avoid the fiat currency and banking system, along with the volatility and expense currently inherent in Bitcoin.
Gold is a real store of value. It's reliable. It's not volatile and it's inexpensive to use."
Ivan had some good counterarguments to Peter's points, namely that the technology is still evolving. Peter and Ivan also discussed issues of trust relating to both gold and cryptocurrency, along with the increasing attention on Bitcoin, especially from government regulators. Peter argued that in order to mainstream Bitcoin, they were forced to becomes "regulated and transparent." This takes away the biggest appeal of cryptocurrency - their anonymity and difficulty to regulate.

Get Peter Schiff’s latest gold market analysis – click here for a free subscription to his exclusive monthly Gold Videocast. Interested in learning how to buy gold and buy silver? Call 1-888-GOLD-160 and speak with a Precious Metals Specialist today!

titleFun on Friday: The Definition of Insanity and a Lesson from the Pilgrims
body

As the saying goes, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results."

Albert Einstein is usually credited with that statement, although there isn't any proof that he ever said it. Nevertheless, it's certainly a good working definition of insanity. And by that definition, I have to conclude that socialists are insane.

When I was a kid, we used to say some things only "sound good on paper." In other words, they seem like good plans, but there is no way they're going to work in the real world.

That's socialism in a nutshell.

I mean, socialism really does sound good on paper, right? We're all going to own everything together and take care of each other. It sounds so nice. And we all want to be nice right? Just think about the expression, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” That's so positive. So nice. So warm and fuzzy.

Except when people start dying.

And you know what's not nice?

Corpses.

That's exactly what happened when the Pilgrims took a stab at socialism.

Most Americans don't know that the Plymouth colony was originally an experiment in socialist utopianism and were it not for a complete 180 a couple of years in, we probably wouldn't have enjoyed the bountiful feasts most of us indulged in yesterday. There would have been no Thanksgiving because there would have been nobody left to give thanks.

When the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts on November 11, 1620, they placed all their food and provisions in a “common store.” These folks were forward thinkers. They didn't even have Marx's scribblings to appeal to. They set things up on the socialist principle of, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.”

Well, things got off to a bad start. Conditions were miserable, as William Bradford described them.

<blockquote>That which was most sad and lamentable was, that in two or three months time half of their company died, especially in January and February, being the depth of winter, and wanting houses and other comforts; being infected with the scurvy and other diseases, so as there died sometimes two or three of a day, in the aforesaid time; that of 100 and odd persons, scarce 50 remained.”</blockquote>

Now, the Pilgrim's initial struggles didn't have anything to do with socialism. They just had the misfortune of landing in Massachusetts at the onset of winter.

Anyway, the following fall, the Pilgrims harvested their first crops and they all went into the common store.

Now, wasn't that nice? No greed. Nobody getting any more than they should. Of course, nobody was getting much of anything at all - but still - they had to feel good about themselves, right?

So, in November the ship <em>Fortune</em> arrived with more than 30 new settlers, mostly young men. More manpower was welcome, but according to accounts, they brought “not so much as a bisket-cake” with them. The future looked bleak as food supplies ran out and the “planned socialist” community faced starvation yet again.

The following year, the harvest was poor in spite of the added manpower. Nevertheless, the pilgrims again put the meager harvest in the common store. Because, you know, insanity.

That winter, they starved.

The colonists were learning economics the hard way.

Richard Grant in "The Incredible Bread Machine" wrote:

"For two years the Pilgrims faithfully practiced communal ownership of the means of production. And for two years nearly starved to death, rationed at times to “but a quarter of a pound of bread a day to each person.” Governor Bradford wrote that “famine must still ensue the next year also if not some way prevented.” He described how the colonists finally decided to introduce private property:

<blockquote>[The colonists] began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop than they had done, that they might not still thus languish in misery. [In 1623] after much debate of things, the Gov. (with the advice of the chiefest amongst them) gave way that they should set down every man for his own … and to trust themselves ... so assigned to every family a parcel of land. This had very good success; for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been by any means the Gov. or any other could use, … and gave far better content. The women now went willingly into the field, and took their little-ones with them to set corn, which before would allege weakness, and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression.”

Reflecting on the experience of the previous two years, Bradford goes on to describe the folly of communal ownership:

<blockquote>“The experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years, and that amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanity of that conceit of Platosand other ancients, applauded by some of later times; — that the taking away of property, and bringing in community into a common wealth would make them happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God. For this community (so far as it was) was found to breed much confusion and discontent, and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort. For the young-men that were most able and fit for labor and service did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children, without any recompense. The strong, or man of parts, had no more indivision of victuals and cloths, than he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice…”</blockquote>

Woha! Some people resented doing all the work? They didn't work as hard when they knew they weren't going to directly benefit? Shocking.

Actually, it's not shocking at all. It's human nature and we all know it. Now, we can lament the fact. We can say it shouldn't be that way. We can finger-point and talk about greed. We can get all holier-than-thou and say we wouldn't act that way (in other words lie). But people will still be people.

Here's a harsh truth: good intentions and feel-good policies can't trump basic economics. You can dream unicorns and lollipops all day, but it won’t change reality.

Scarcity. Human behavior. Incentives. The experience of the Pilgrims vividly demonstrates basic economic principles. Their good intentions could not overpower the cold hard realities of economic principles. They never have. They never will.

Every time doubters proclaim Bitcoin is on the mat for good, it manages to claw its way back up.Bitcoin went into a freefall after the Chinese government announced plans to ban cryptocurrency trading on all domestic exchanges. But early Monday, the digital currency hit its highest level since early September. The steady climb of Bitcoin and its meteoric rise this year have led to some speculation that digital currencies may usurp gold. There have been headlines proclaiming cryptocurrencies are killing the yellow metal. But there are some fundamental reasons cryptos will never replace gold.A recent Forbes article pointed out some important characteristics of gold that will prevent Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies from ever being able to completely push it out. Most of the focus now is on Bitcoin. They strictly function as a form of currency. They have no intrinsic value. In fact, they don’t even exist in the material world. Gold has value beyond the fact that it is money. It is highly valued as jewelry, and it is increasingly being used in technological applications from medicine, to electronics, to energy production. Most importantly, gold does not depend on the internet or electricity to work. If the power grid goes down, or the internet is out, your $1 million of Bitcoin won’t do you much good.

Unlike cryptos, gold doesn’t require electricity to trade. This makes it especially useful in situations such as hurricane-ravished Puerto Rico, where 95% of people are reportedly still without power. Right now the island’s economy is cash-only. The cryptocurrency market, although expanding rapidly, is not quite there yet.”

None of this is to say there is no place for cryptocurrencies in the modern world. The development of a decentralized, anonymous system of exchange that doesn’t rely on government is nothing short of revolutionary. And a lot of people have made a lot of money in cryptocurrencies. It’s just that cryptos lack some important features gold and silver posses. Bitcoin is not a replacement for gold. Although they share some similar characteristics, they are fundamentally different things.Of course, you don’t have to choose one over the other. You can buy Bitcoin and gold. You can even buy gold and silver with Bitcoin. In the world of investing, it’s never wise to put all of your eggs in one proverbial basket. Diversifying your cryptocurrency portfolio with precious metals can help mitigate some of the potential downsides and put you in an overall stronger financial position.

titleMoody’s Investors Service Downgraded Hartford's Credit Rating
body
https://schiffgold.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/800px-Hartford_CT.jpg
What happens when government officials spend with virtually no restraint and they don't have a printing press that can crank out more money? Hartford, Connecticut. Last week, both S&P Global Ratings and Moody’s Investors Service downgraded Hartford's credit rating deeper into junk status. According to a Reuters report, the downgrade puts Hartford near the bottom of the credit scale. This means the agencies view the city as essentially in default with little prospect for a full bondholder recovery. According to S&P analysts, "A default, a distressed exchange, or redemption appears to be a virtual certainty.”
Hartford’s budgetary performance has been weak for several years, and the management environment remains constrained due to a structurally imbalanced budget with no credible corrective plan.”
Moody's said there is “increased likelihood of default as early as November” adding that its rating reflects its expectation that bondholders will recover just 65 to 80% of their principal investments. In other words, if you invested in Hartford's future, you're probably about to get hosed. How did this happen? Hartford's politicians have run up around $530 million in outstanding debt. Mainstream outlets such as the New York Times blame a lack of tax revenue. But this seems a little dubious considering Hartford sits in one of the highest taxed states in the US. The fact of the matter is, the city, and more broadly the state, has a spending problem. Democrats have run this city since the 1970s. Like most Democrats (and Republicans for that matter), they gave unions and other special interests everything they wanted. City workers got big salaries and fat pensions. Now the time has come to pay the piper. Many struggling municipalities turn to their states for help. In Connecticut, that's like the beggar turning to the pauper for a handout. The state is also functionally bankrupt struggling under massive pension debt. It's running a $3.5 billion deficit. Its pension liabilities stand at around $68 billion. ranking it among the top-five underfunded pensions in the country. As Forbes put it earlier this summer:
With state pension obligations already consuming half of their state budget, the state is beyond a weak position to bail out any municipality.”
In 2015, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy signed a budget that included $1.1 billion in tax hikes. More than $700 million of the new tax burden fell on businesses and the middle class. It didn’t help. A report by the Connecticut News Project put it starkly.
Simply, the bill is coming due in ever-increasing amounts for the 80-year failure of one of the richest states in the nation to adequately save for retirement benefits promised to teachers and state employees."
In simplest terms, Hartford and the state of Connecticut are suffering the consequences of political malfeasance. It's easy to look at the Hartfords of the world and write them off as a special cases - glaring examples of bad government. But in truth, Hartford is just a microcosm of America. It's business as usual. The fact is, the US federal government is actually in much worse fiscal shape than this functionally bankrupt city. The only difference is D.C. has a printing press and a central bank. That means it has a longer road along which it can kick the can. But like even the longest road, the pavement will eventually end. The problem with governments is they simply can't stop spending money, whether they have it or not. When Pres. Trump signed a bill raising the debt ceiling limit for the next three months, it instantly added approximately $318 billion to the national debt, raising it to $20.16 trillion. And Trump wants to do away with the debt ceiling altogether. Inflation-adjusted tax revenue has risen slightly since the Second World War, but the spending level has soared through the roof. This is not just an American phenomenon. Governments all over the world have piled up debt. Earlier this summer, US Global Investors CEO Frank Holmes called global debt “the mother of all bubbles. And like every bubble - at some point it's going to burst - in Hartford, in Connecticut, in Washington D.C., and all over the world.

Get Peter Schiff’s latest gold market analysis – click here for a free subscription to his exclusive monthly Gold Videocast. Interested in learning how to buy gold and buy silver? Call 1-888-GOLD-160 and speak with a Precious Metals Specialist today!

titleCryptocurrency Website Says Now Is a Good Time for Gold
body
![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZFZdauyS328c5SkMQt4kbHRQpAUPT5QunncnWesEyubB/image.png)
Even some of the biggest supporters of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies recognize the stability of gold. Last week was a bad week for Bitcoin. It's price dropped significantly in the wake of a Chinese government crackdown on cryptocurrency exchanges in the country. Bitcoin's price has recovered a bit this week, but a recent article published by The Cointelegraph still proclaimed now is a good time for gold.

Cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, have flown a little too close to the sun recently, and it has seen them get burned by a few key monetary institutions, as well as governments. This attack on Bitcoin, as well as fear and speculation around other markets, could spell a good time for investment in gold. As markets, beyond even the crypto market, get spooked, investors could see a safety net in the precious metal."

The Cointelegraph article emphasized gold as a "safe steady investment."

When sexy cryptocurrencies came along, with their 800 percent gains in less than a year, many put their funds into it. At times, there can be a great deal of animosity between the worlds of crypto and precious metals. But as the article demonstrates, there really doesn't have to be. Cryptocurrencies and precious metals can peacefully coexist. The Cointelegraph takes a similar position as SchiffGold. It's good to diversify. Some investors have made a lot of money in the world of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. But it remains a risky world. Diversifying your cryptocurrency portfolio with precious metals can help mitigate some of the potential downsides and put you in an overall stronger financial position. SchiffGold can help you convert some of your Bitcoin into precious metals. Click HERE for more information.!
