      "body": "It's a common theme for people to ask about time travel after learning about the speed of light constant and time dilation. After all, if you can \"slow time\" by traveling faster, then why wouldn't you be able to go backwards in time by going faster than light. This idea, however, has several problems.\n\nNotice: This post will be in layman's terms, simple enough for the average person to understand. I'll hardly write about spacetime at the level of critically acclaimed professor.\n\nThe speed of light in a vacuum, (written as c, or 299,792,458 meters/second) is a constant throughout the universe. It is the fastest speed anything can and will ever go. This is because of a photon's absolutely infinitesimal mass. For comparison, an electron has a mass of 510,998.946 eV/c^2 (that is, electron volts divided by the speed of light squared.) A photon, the particle that carries electromagnetic waves, including light, has a mass of less than 1x10^-18 eV/c^2, or 0.000,000,000,000,000,001 eV/c^2.\n\nThis means that it takes almost no energy for photons to move. Everything, even the smallest subatomic particles, take far more energy to move due to their mass. No force in the universe can move a manmade ship faster than the speed of light, so its a moot point in the first place.\n\nNow, time dilation increases exponentially as you approach the speed of light.\n\nhttp://www.phy.olemiss.edu/HEP/QuarkNet/gr_timedial.gif\n\nThe lowest speed at which time dilation becomes significant is around 40% of the speed of light. The fastest speed humans have reached (achieved on the Apollo 10 mission) is about 0.00004%. Yes, someone travelling very fast in space for a long time would have seemed to aged less upon their return than someone on Earth (not that we can go fast enough for this, 6 months on the International Space Station saws a relative 0.005 seconds off your aging) , but this isn't actually travelling through time. It's more like time is travelling around you.\n\nTime dilation happens because spacetime bends around fast-moving objects. You wouldn't notice any difference in time if you were travelling near the speed of light, but you would have aged less than people who had remained on Earth had once you returned.\n\nIn conclusion, you CANNOT travel faster than light speed. Even if it were possible, no math can prove that time travel would occur, nothing even suggests it. Time dilation just doesn't work that way.",

      "body": "It's a common theme for people to ask about time travel after learning about the speed of light constant and time dilation. After all, if you can \"slow time\" by traveling faster, then why wouldn't you be able to go backwards in time by going faster than light. This idea, however, has several problems.\n\nNotice: This post will be in layman's terms, simple enough for the average person to understand. I'll hardly write about spacetime at the level of critically acclaimed professor.\n\nThe speed of light in a vacuum, (written as c, or 299,792,458 meters/second) is a constant throughout the universe. It is the fastest speed anything can and will ever go. This is because of a photon's absolutely infinitesimal mass. For comparison, an electron has a mass of 510,998.946 eV/c^2 (that is, electron volts divided by the speed of light squared.) A photon, the particle that carries electromagnetic waves, including light, has a mass of less than 1x10^-18 eV/c^2, or 0.000,000,000,000,000,001 eV/c^2.\n\nThis means that it takes almost no energy for photons to move. Everything, even the smallest subatomic particles, take far more energy to move due to their mass. No force in the universe can move a manmade ship faster than the speed of light, so its a moot point in the first place.\n\nNow, time dilation increases exponentially as you approach the speed of light.\n\nhttp://www.phy.olemiss.edu/HEP/QuarkNet/gr_timedial.gif\n\nThe lowest speed at which time dilation becomes significant is around 40% of the speed of light. The fastest speed humans have reached (achieved on the Apollo 10 mission) is about 0.00004%. When working out the hypothetical scenarios, equations begin to fill with infinities, zeroes, and impossible solutions. Yes, someone travelling very fast in space for a long time would have seemed to aged less upon their return than someone on Earth (not that we can go fast enough for this, 6 months on the International Space Station saws a relative 0.005 seconds off your aging) , but this isn't actually travelling through time. It's more like time is travelling around you.\n\nTime dilation happens because spacetime bends around fast-moving objects. You wouldn't notice any difference in time if you were travelling near the speed of light, but you would have aged less than people who had remained on Earth had once you returned.\n\nIn conclusion, you CANNOT travel faster than light speed. Even if it were possible, no math can prove that time travel would occur, nothing even suggests it. Time dilation just doesn't work that way.",
