      "body": "![bills-496229_1920.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmWw16LE2k59qivvbThsQy1rbfitvv8nV5843AKEnkqnP5/bills-496229_1920.jpg)\nHow did humanity come to accept rectangular pieces of pulped trees as something to spend eight to ten hours a day working for?\n\nIt's a pretty insane story.\n\nThis change from hard currency like gold or silver\n\nis a really huge deal.\n\nWithout it, we couldn't possibly have the massive industrial\n\nand post-industrial economies we know today.\n\nThis change revolutionized how we do business\n\nand forever altered how governments were financed.\n\nLearning about this massive sea change\n\nin how we as a species thought about money\n\ncan help us reflect on our current historical shift\n\nfrom seeing paper as money, to seeing bits,\n\nseeing digital ones and zeros as money.\n\nBut before we can get the exciting story of people\n\ntrying to convince other people that paper was worth something,\n\nto understand why this is such a huge deal,\n\nwe have to discuss a bit about how we thought about money before paper.\n\nIf we go way back to the beginning of society,\n\nwe find trade.\n\nBefore early humans even really settled down,\n\nthere's evidence that, when we met, we exchanged things we had made or things we'd found.\n\nBut as soon as humans started to cultivate the earth and form societies,\n\nwe started to specialize\n\nand that meant that we not only loved to trade, we had to.\n\nNow, often when we think of trade we think of long distance trade.\n\nWe think of caravans loaded with exotic goods.\n\nBut for our story, we have to talk about local trade.\n\nBecause here's where we run into the problem of Coincidence of Wants.\n\nOr rather, we run into it everywhere.\n\nBut if we fail to solve this problem at the local level,\n\nsociety breaks down\n\nand we can't have the specialised trades we need to run anything\n\nbeyond the smallest gathering of people.\n\nSo what is a Coincidence of Wants?\n\nIt's the basis on which trade can exist.\n\nLet's say that I make shirts,\n\nand you grow food.\n\nWell, if you want a shirt and I want food,\n\nawesome, we can trade. But if I don't want\nyour stupid food, or if you're all full\n\nup on shirts,\n\nwell, we can't trade, can we? And that\nstarts becoming a real problem for\n\nsociety if i want food but you don't\nwant my shirts. Maybe I can find somebody\n\nwith some third good that you do want.\nBut that means that a lot of time is\n\nconsumed by trading. And if I can't find\nsome other good you want to trade for,\n\nwell, there's gonna be trouble. And this\nproblem runs even deeper than we\n\nsometimes think about\n\nwhen you consider the lack of\nrefrigeration and transportation. Imagine\n\nI'm a fisherman and you're a farmer, and\nlet's say that we want to trade.\n\nWell there's this problem; your harvest\nonly comes in once a year. I can't trade\n\nyou for a harvest you don't have yet, and\nall of those extra fish I caught today\n\nare going to be pretty rotten by the\ntime your harvest comes in. And while\n\nthis may seem like a very specific\nexample, trade for food was probably the\n\nmost prevalent trade of the ancient world.\nSo we need to find a third good that we\n\nboth want that we can trade for. But\nwouldn't it be convenient if there was\n\nsome universal third good which\neverybody wanted and would trade for?\n\nSo we didn't have to do some long chain of bartering every time we wanted something.\n\nEnter, money. All money is is a third good\nthat doesn't spoil and that we all agree\n\nhas value, thus becoming a unit of\nexchange; An intermediary good, by which\n\nall other goods can be traded.\n\nAnd while we often think of coins made\nof precious metals for this purpose, the\n\ntruth is, so long as it's durable enough\nand hard enough to procure, anything can\n\nserve as money. Tangent time: Turns out\nwe have used a lot of weird stuff as\n\nmoney over our history. For example,\ncattle have often served as money. I mean,\n\nthey're fairly durable, they last for\nyears,\n\nthey're practical, and they're reasonably\nscarce. When Europeans arrived in the\n\nAmericas, alcohol often served as\ncurrency. You could literally drink your\n\npaycheck. Cigarettes have often become\nmoney of prisons and POW camps.\n\nBack in ancient China, money in the shape of tools and then knives became some of the\n\nfirst examples of precious metal money.\nAnd, my personal favorite, on the island\n\nof Yap, gigantic limestone donuts serve\nas money. They are so huge that once they\n\nare brought to the island,\n\nno one even moves them. They just remember who owns which ones. In fact, all of these\n\nstones had to be quarried off-island,\nbecause there's no naturally-occurring\n\nlimestone on Yap.\n\nAnd once when a crew was coming back\nfrom a quarrying expedition, a storm hit and\n\nsent their stone to the bottom of the\nocean. But the crew survived and told\n\neverybody what had happened, and the\nIslanders decided that \"Eh, it still\n\ncounted.\" So to this day, somebody owns\nthat giant piece of stone money at the\n\nbottom of the sea. And even though it's\nnot really in use today, for hundreds of\n\nyears that stone was used to buy and\nsell things, even though no one had\n\never seen it, giving Yap, in some ways, one of the most forward-thinking monetary\n\nsystems before the modern era. But if we\nwant to talk about the king of them all,\n\nthe form of money that has been used the\nlongest and over the widest expanse of\n\nthe globe, we have to talk about one\nthing.\n\nNo, not gold. Although in fairness, that's\nwhat I would have guessed too. Nope, it's\n\nthe cowry shell. It's durable, impossible\nto counterfeit, and without modern\n\nharvesting techniques it's not so easy\nto acquire that inflation will run\n\nrampant. Anyway, tangent over, back on\ntarget.\n\nWe have lots of different possible types\nof pre-modern money, including the gold\n\nand silver coins that we so often think\nof when we think of money of the past.\n\nBut all of these different types of\nmoney have one thing in common: they are\n\nwhat we call commodity money, because\ntheir value is in the commodity\n\nthemselves. Even cowries were seen as\nrare and beautiful, and can be used for\n\njewelry and the like, and so were thought\nof as having intrinsic value. The same\n\nway we feel gold has an intrinsic value\nfor its scarcity and its uses.\n\nNow, that makes a lot of sense for a\ncurrency. It feels secure and reasonable.\n\nYou can trust to the worth of that gold\ncoin in your hand.\n\nI mean, after all, if you're used to\ntrading one thing for another,\n\nwhy would you ever trade something\nvaluable like a horse for something\n\nworthless like a pile of paper? But for\ngold or for cowries, well that's\n\nanother story. But when your economy\ngrows, this system starts showing some of\n\nits limits. For one thing, commodity money is heavy.\n\nIf you're doing massive deals, it gets\nreally hard to transport. And it's risky\n\nto transport across lawless lands.\nCommodity money is also often subject to\n\ndebasing, where somebody. usually the\nperson who should be responsible for\n\nmaking sure the currency maintains its\nvalue, waters down the whiskey, or takes a\n\ngold coin, melts it down, and reforges it\nwith a bit less gold in it, and passes it\n\noff as worth the same amount. But more\nthan anything, when you get to gigantic\n\neconomies, the very scarcity that makes\ncommodity money seem to have value\n\nbecomes your enemy. Like, let's take gold\nand silver. What happens when your\n\neconomy grows to the point where you\njust can't get enough of it?\n\nWe actually saw the effects of this in\nour episode on the Opium Wars, where so\n\nmuch English silver was ending up in\nChina in exchange for tea,\n\nit was actually causing inflation, and\nhampering basic economic transactions at\n\nhome. And this really comes into effect\nwhen we get to more modern government\n\nfinance, and the financing of war.\n\nWhat happens to a nation when it has to\nmake a sudden drastic uptick in its\n\nspending, but can't get enough specie to\ncover its cost? Even from those who are\n\nwilling to lend? As I am sure we will see\nin future Extra History episodes, it\n\nplays havoc with an economy, and even the ability to prosecute a war. And the\n\nreverse of this is true as well.\n\nCurrencies based on scarcity are often\nsubject to changes in the scarcity of\n\nthe commodity on which they're based, which can be trouble when somebody finds a lot\n\nmore of your currency commodity. When\nSpain started to important massive\n\namounts of silver and gold from the\nAmericas, all the precious metal-based\n\ncurrency in Europe started to suffer\nfrom inflation. After all, all those gold\n\ncoins weren't worth nearly as much since\nsomebody had just dumped a huge new pile\n\nof gold on European shores. And as a\ngovernment, or even a financial sector,\n\nwhen someone digging up a new pile of\nminerals means that you can't control\n\nyour own fiscal policy, then that's bad\nnews. But those disadvantages are only\n\neasy to see if you're a head of state or\nworking on the largest-scale\n\ntransactions. If you're just some average\nperson in the street, when some\n\nwell-to-do says that they want to take\nyour grain in exchange for this nice\n\nslip of... is that paper?\n\nWell, you would be forgiven for thinking\nthat you smell a rat. a\nlittle feature here\n\nthat we're going to do\nevery once in a while\n\nand it's called Rock Reacts.\n\nNow, what we have here for\nthe very first Rock Reacts,\n\nthe amazing crack workers at\nSeven Bucks Digital Studios\n\nfound my very first\nmatch in the WWE.\n\nI'll just give you guys\na little bit of context.\n\nGenerally, when somebody\ncomes in the WWE\n\nand they have their\nvery first match,\n\ntheir very first\nmatch is generally\n\nwhat's called at a live event\nor at a very small venue.\n\nIt's certainly not at\na big pay-per-view.\n\nMy very first match\nin the WWE was\n\nat one of their\nbiggest pay-per-views\n\nof the year called Survivor\nSeries in the most famous arena\n\nin the world, Madison\nSquare Garden,\n\nwhere my grandfather wrestled\nin the 70s for Vince McMahon's\n\ndad, my dad wrestled for\nVince McMahon's in the 80s,\n\nand here I came in in 1996.\n\nI give you that context.\n\nI remember knowing what\nthe finish of the match\n\nwas and I made one call to my\nparents and I was like, hey,\n\njust watch tonight, something\nspecial is going to go down.\n\nAnd I was super,\nsuper, super amped\n\nand excited for this night.\n\nHere we go, Rock Reacts.\n\nLadies and gentlemen, his debut.\n\nAll right, so right now\nI am feeling myself,\n\nI'm so hyped up, I'm so excited,\nand I've got a fucking chia\n\npet on my head as a haircut.\n\nSuperstar [INAUDIBLE].\n\nHis father--\n\nSo I jump over the top\nrope, like I'm a bad bitch,\n\nand I literally point--\n\nI have to rewind this\njust so you guys know.\n\nI think I'm pointing to\nwhat's called the hard cam,\n\nand I'm literally\npointing to nothing.\n\nAnd that's why my\nback was to you guys.\n\nAnd again, I had this whole\nthing mapped out in my head\n\nthat I was going to\njump over the ropes,\n\nI was going to look at the hard\ncam, because we're always told,\n\nyou look at the hard\ncamera, the main camera,\n\nyou're speaking to the world.\n\nI jump over the top\nropes and I'm like, yeah!\n\nI'm here!\n\nFucking hard camera's behind me.\n\nHere we go right now,\nreaction continues.\n\nJake the Snake just\ngot hit with what\n\nlooks to be a heart\npunch from a man\n\nby the name of Crush, who was\nan awesome guy who has since\n\npassed away and I\nappreciate him so much.\n\nSo after that elimination,\nnow I am the only one left.\n\nIt is one against two.\n\nAnd it is the two heels against\nthe one young rookie baby face.\n\nAnd I'm going to pause it\nright here because something\n\nreally, really cool happened.\n\nThese guys are amazing\nathletes, they go out,\n\nso I had no idea what\nthe finish of this match\n\nwas going to be until maybe\nan hour before the match.\n\nSo we set it up where ultimately\nthe final three competitors\n\nwere two bad guys against one\ngood guy, and that was me.\n\nSo the moment Jake\nthe Snake Roberts got\n\nbeat, you felt an immediate\nshift in the tone of the crowd,\n\n22,000 people in\nMadison Square Garden.\n\nThey looked at the two bad guys,\nthey looked at the new rookie,\n\nand in that moment,\n20,000 people\n\ncan either go, shit, he's\ngoing to get his ass kicked!\n\nOr they go, shit, he's\ngoing to get his ass kicked!\n\nBut you know what?\n\nWe like that dude and we\nwant him to kick ass too.\n\nAnd 22,000 people did\nsomething in this moment\n\nthat defined my\ncareer and literally\n\nchanged my life in one night.\n\nAnd it's something\nyou can't write,\n\nit's something in wrestling you\ncan't write, you can't script\n\nit, you can't script\nit in Hollywood,\n\nbecause you just can't\nscript how people are\n\ngoing to react to something.\n\nAnd that thing that they\ndid was 20,000 people\n\nstarted chanting my name.\n\nHere we go.\n\n--is left with two\nmen on one, two--\n\nHoly shit, look at that hair.\n\n--against the rookie.\n\nTwo on one sounds kinda good.\n\nLook at this, he's a newcomer\nand they're already chanting\n\nhis name, the entire building!\n\n20,000 people!\n\nThey're chanting my name.\n\nThey're like, Rocky,\nget a haircut!\n\nHoly shit!\n\nSo I'm in there with a guy named\nCrush, first name was Brian,\n\nhas since passed away.\n\nHe's amazing and also\nhe was a great friend.\n\nAnd also a good buddy of mine\nwho's still in the WWE kicking\n\nass is Goldust.\n\nThis is called a\ntest of strength.\n\nAnd back in the good old days of\nwrestling, I loved doing this.\n\n--in a tug of war.\n\nExactly.\n\nWe know he'll take a shortcut,\njust like he did this morning.\n\n\n\nAnd the injured Mark Henry--\nwait a minute, one, two!\n\nIt's got a quick, small\npackage, one, two, kick out.\n\nLook at the power.\n\nThen I start nailing Goldust\nwith the big right hand\n\nand I start going\ncrazy right here.\n\nRight here, all that\ncrazy shit and those crazy\n\nmoves, in wrestling terms\nthat is called Babyface Fire.\n\nNow Goldust is just\nslapping me, by the way.\n\nHere we go.\n\nThey shoot me in,\nthere's a duck, going on,\n\ndouble crossbody.\n\n\n\nAnd look at this,\nover the top goes--\n\nOver the top!\n\nBro, Vince McMahon\ncommentating, he\n\nwas one of the greatest of all\ntime in terms of commentating.\n\nI wish he would\nstill commentate.\n\nAnd now here we go, back\nand forth, trading punches.\n\nWith the powerhouse crush.\n\nAh!\n\nHe better watch out\nfor that heart punch.\n\nA low blow, right\ninto the balls.\n\nBut they're not just any balls.\n\nThose are the people's balls.\n\nAll right, here we go.\n\nThis is it.\n\nThis is the end!\n\nOh, he moves!\n\nHard punch to Goldust.\n\nYou could feel the crowd.\n\nUh-oh, big mistake.\n\nBig crossbody.\n\nOne, two, three.\n\n\n\nHere's a little Info\nthat I'll share with you\n\nguys that I've never\nshared with
