      "body": "Just a short flight from London is the city of Lisbon.  The Portuguese capital has become hugely popular lately as a travel destination.  With cute architecture, delicious cuisine and gorgeous views, it is no wonder why so many people are stopping by.  A few days in Lisbon is a welcomed break, with sunshine and lots to see, do and eat.  A perfect place for a weekend getaway!\n\n\nGet Your Bearings\nLocated on the West side of Portugal, the city’s airport is a travel hub for those flying in.  In fact, I was surprised by the large size of the airport and the number of flights coming in from London, the rest of Europe and the States.  TAP Portugal are aggressively expanding but has been relatively less heard of in the travel world.  I was pleasantly surprised by the flights to and from London and would recommend flying with them when planning your visit it Lisbon.  Added bonus is that the airline’s flight crew has been named most handsome crew!\n\n\n—————————————————\n\nStart Off with a Market\nStart your visit with a trip to the Time Out Market, an enormous food market in the centre of town serving up some unique and delicious dishes.  The food hall is packed with restaurants and stalls, serving up some of the most incredible seafood, cold cut meats and delicious local dishes! Do be mindful that during peak hours, it might take a while to get a seat and table.  Make sure to check out the store that only sells canned food! \n\nHike and Explore\nLisbon is famously known as the City of Seven Hills.  This means that pretty much every corner or street you walk down, you will somehow end up walking up one of the hills.  This also means that there are numerous lookout points around the city that all offer some incredible views!  There is something mesmerizing about those tiled roofs, all in that gorgeous orange!\n\nA walk around Lisbon and you will discover endless cute little streets, squares, monuments and beautifully decorated buildings.  This makes getting lost a real treat! \n\n\nFor those who don’t fancy too much hill walking, take the famous Tram 28 and go for a little tour around town.  It is a great way to get away from the heat while seeing loads of the city. \n\n\n\nLisbon Free walking Tour \nThe best way to get to know a city is through a free walking tour!  They are usually run by genuine people who know the city and you will end up only paying for what you want.  These are normally tip based services and you quite literally decide how much the tour was worth at the end.  I usually look for tours run by Sandeman’s– they are really enjoyable, dynamic and run by fun guides! \n\n\n\nThe tour gives you a deep understanding of the city’s history, local heroes, top spots and great tips for the rest of your stay in Lisbon.  Some of my highlights were the oldest book store in the world, endless squares, the Santa Justa lift and some incredible city stories!\n\n\nOn the Edge of Lisbon\nJust outside of the center of Lisbon is the historical area of Belem.  You should spend at least half a day or a morning in this area.  The first stop would be to get to Pastéis de Belém early in the morning, before the queues start.  This is the world most famous bakery shop that sells the best pastel de nata in town.  It is freshly made in store and the queue gets really long. So definitely get there for their 8am opening. You cannot beat a hot pastry first thing in the morning, with a nice cup of coffee.\n\n\n\n\nAfter your heavy and sweet breakfast, you could stop by the Palace and do a quick tour, or check out the Jerónimos Monastery.  I skipped the Palace and headed for the later, where I was met with a grand looking building with incredible interiors. This monastery was opened in 1495 and still has regular services.\n\n\nThe last part of the morning in Belem would be a nice gentle stroll down the riverside.  You will first see Padrão dos Descobrimentos, a monument representing the concept of Portuguese exploration.\n\n\n\nIt is such a nice little walk along the river, with plenty of cafes and restaurants to sit at and people watch.  Before you know it, you will have reached the Belem Tower, a medieval defensive tower that is worth stopping for photos.  What a nice morning spent in Belem!\n\n\nBarrio Alto\nThis neighborhood in central Lisbon is worth exploring and wondering around.  It has this really nice vibe to it, with low buildings and lots of bars! Definitely a spot to pop by for some drinks!  Wine lovers have to head to BA Wine Bar – this is a cute little spot serving up some great local wines! \n\n\n\n\nOne of the best things I managed to experience in Lisbon was an intimate Fado performance.  Fado is a music genre from 1820s and usually played by a small band with some very intense singing and usually portraying some very emotional and sad events.  The songs are all in Portuguese but you can really feel the emotions from the music and the singing alone.  It is an experience really worth having! So much emotion.  I would suggest heading to Mascote da Atalaia in Barrio Alto the day before to book a spot for dinner the next day.  The food is decent, there is this amazing sparkling white wine on tap and the music is just completely out of the world! \n\n\nAlfama\nThe last area of Lisbon worth mentioning is Alfama.  During the day, the tiny and cobbled streets are filled with old grandmas shouting at each other and having a good time.  At night, it is where all the bars and parties are at!  This former red light district was ironically the only area in the whole of Lisbon that did not get destroyed during the last massive earthquake! You can walk down the streets at night and head into any bar, fado or restaurant, to really get a taste of Lisbon’s night life! \n\n\nWhere To Eat\nOne of my favorite travel shows is Somebody Feed Phil.  This short series is really centered around places to eat and is based around a city per episode.  When Phil was in Lisbon, there was one restaurant that I just knew I had to go check out – Ponto Final.  A short ferry ride from the centre of Lisbon and you will be on the other side, with some of the best views of the city.  About a 15 minute walk along the waters and you will come across this cute little restaurant literally on the side of the water!  Make sure to call well in advance if you want a table on the edge.  It is definitely worth it, especially with the view of the whole of Lisbon.  Perfect while you feast on the freshest seafood ever – grilled fish, octopus and all.  I spent a ridiculous amount of time here for lunch (3 hours!).  It was so relaxing with incredible food and great wine too!  A definite must when in Lisbon. \n\nFor more traditional Portuguese or local food, there are two decent spots in town.  One is Taberna da Rua das Flores, a super cute and artisan tavern-like contemporary restaurant.  The food was seasonal, with black boards as menu.  The staff are nice enough to point out each dish in detail and recommended things to try.  Its like Portuguese tapas, sharing small plates and trying lots of different things!  The dim lighting and vibe makes this place really intimate for dates as well!\n\nWord of caution – this place is very popular! I went at around 6pm and was asked to come back 1.5 hours later! It is a small place and it is fair enough.  Pop your name down and then head next door to By The Wine for some quality local wines and snacks.\n\nFor a more traditional setting, try out Casa do Alentejo.  This is an old palace that was built around the 17th century and contains some beautiful mosaics and interior designs.  Finding the spot was a bit challenging but once inside from the busy high street, you enter into a tranquil courtyard and get absolutely transported into some Spanish or Moorish setting.  I spent some time walking around just to see the place! The stairs and the interior were all really well designed and preserved.   \n\nFood was served upstairs and consisted of great local dishes from the Alentejo region, with the likes of lamb stews, pork loins and rabbit.  What makes this place so special is the dining hall.  One of the most incredibly designed places I have eaten at!  \n\n\nPeri Peri What? How can you come to Portugal and not try out the famous Peri Peri chicken?  Rumour has it that Frangasqueira Nacional has the best chicken in town.  This little take out spot is famous for the meat and runs out of chicken on most days! I was so looking forward to this but only to find out that it was closed on a bank holiday!  Feeling gutted, I walked aimless around the empty streets to find an alternative.  Luckily, I walked into a little park with a small spot for dinner.  In a green house like building is Esplanada Cafe.  This is such a cute spot with large open windows and is a perfect place to sit and sip wine and enjoy some gorgeous chicken!  One of the most relaxed evenings I had in Lisbon!\n\n\n\nAll in All\nLisbon was such a lovely city to explore and enjoy. This is a perfect destination for a long weekend. Spend a few days in the city and you will be eating great seafood, getting lost in beautiful architecture and learning so much about the history and life of this great city!       "body": "After spending a few days in the magical capital of Czech Republic, Prague, we wanted to spend some time exploring what the countryside had to offer.  A little road trip was the perfect way to head up North towards the German border.  The region was known as Bohemian Switzerland - an area of lush trees, gorgeous hiking paths and amazing nature. \n\n\nMost people won't think of doing a road trip out of Prague when they visit this region, so we were so glad we decided to do something different and explore some of the less visited areas of the country.  Historically, this was an extension of Switzerland, with plenty of castles created to defend the region along the trade routes.  These fortifications and castles definitely add to the character of the region, along with some of the most amazing landscapes and views.  This makes it a perfect little excursion from Prague, ideal for an overnight stay in a farm and a bit of relaxation with the natural greenery!  Here is our itinerary for a quick little detour out of the capital.\n\n\n\nDay 1:\n\nWe started with our car rental in the centre of Prague at the main train station. It was easy enough to register and pick up the car with our rental company (Budget).  Our first leg was a 1.5 hour trip up to Hrensko, a little village by the river, near the national park.  The drive up was very easy, with little traffic and very comfortable and wide roads.  We stopped at the first restaurant we saw for some warm tea and coffees, in eager anticipation of our little hike.  \n\n\n\nOur main target for the day was to see Pravčická brana, also known as the Falcon's nest. We had to park a bit of a way from the entrance of the park and slowly make our way to the entrance.   \n\n\nThe walk up is very mild and easy with a very straightforward path to follow.   As we visited in December, the greenery were replaced by these amazing autumny orange leaves, which was all really picturesque! \n\nAfter a bit of a hike, we finally got a glimpse of the arch way.  This is the largest natural stone arch in Europe and is absolutely massive as a back drop when you look up at it! \n\n\n\nThere is also a pretty old school looking building next to the arch that used to house guests for the park.  \n\n\n\nAt the back of the building, there is a little path that leads you around and up some stairs towards a nice aerial view of the arch and house.  It is well worth climbing up for some photos.  Do bare in mind that it can get a bit foggy and cold! \n\n![DSC04898.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmNXZsxS1r8po1FpW61ue2iWJUBvFwVNc9No8cg742mJSW/DSC04898.JPG)\n\nEvening in a modern farm.\n\nAfter some (lots) of photos and getting a bit cold, we had to climb back down towards the car and head towards our stay for the night.  We drive further into the forest, cruising around endless farmlands and fields towards Penzion Na Stodolci (The Barn Inn). This is a really old farm (since 1881) and offers lodging for the night and some delicious food.  On arrival, you will be greeted with a very homey like feel at the entrance, with wooden interiors and a very comfortable room for the night. \n\n\nDinner was served downstairs and was a selection of delicious German style meats, fish and this unbelievable cheese plate. It was one of the best breakfast spreads I have had in a long time!   \n\n\nWe managed to do a little walk around and exploring of the farm and came across a fine looking Tesla by the barns (farm owner not doing too badly!). \n\n\nWe then started our drive towards Bastei, just across from the German border.  Sitting at 194 meters above the Elbe river, we wanted to check out the natural rock formations that were caused by water erosion over a million years ago.  It was quite unbelievable how incredible nature is when it comes to things like this.  It also really reminded us of Avatar the movie but in real life! Although this was not the original wooden bridge built in 1824, I do like how they have used stones to match up with the natural rocks. It is super easy to hire a car and drive up and the natural scenes are just magnificent.  You also cannot beat a nice stay in a farm with some homey food and comfortable barn stay! \n\nStick around for my next post!",

Stepping into the city and you will be transformed into a world filled with old squares and incredible Bohemian food.  The old town offers a magical experience that no other European city can offer.  It is no wonder why Prague has surged in recent popularity.   Below is my top five reasons why Prague is the perfect city for a weekend getaway! \n\n\n\n1. A very walkable town with so much to see\nA city that can be explored by foot is the ideal place for a weekend getaway and the Prague Old Town is just big and flat enough to be explored completely by foot!  Founded in the 7th century, the Old Town has this incredibly romantic feeling to it.  I am not sure if it is to do with the old buildings or the mix of styles from multiple periods but there is just this magical feeling to the whole place.  The Old Town square is the center of it all and is a busy and buzzing part of the city.  During festive periods like Christmas, you will find market stalls of food everywhere.  The huts and the Christmas tree really adds to the Christmas spirit.  \n\n![DSC04749.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmejwVykPYQomu3FaZVceEJXRonm4FqssTSKs6UWw7Xmvz/DSC04749.JPG)\n\nTowering just behind the square is the Church of Our Lady before Týn, a Roman Catholic church from the 14th century that quite literally towers over the whole square.  This is a massive Gothic church and looks really mystical and mysterious in the backdrop of the old square! \n\n\n\n\nProbably the most visited attraction in the whole of Prague is the Astronomical Clock.  This clock was installed in 1410 and is the oldest operating astronomical clock in the world.  This impressive clock has so many components, from representations of the Earth, views of the sky and zodiac rings, to depictions of the sun movement and then there are the animated figures on the outside.  It really is a complicated structure and very incredible how it was build so long ago! \n\n\n\n \nA little walk into town and you might bump into one of the Charles University buildings.  This University was established in 1348 and is the first University in Central Europe! \n\n\nJosefov is the Jewish quarter and is a labyrinth of small buildings with little alleyways.  We went on the Sandeyman's free walking tour and there was so many cool little stories about this area.  I would highly recommend going on this tour to find out more about this historical area.  Make sure to ask about the infamous golem monster!\n\n\n\nThis walk able city has so much history, culture and is perfect for a weekend getaway!\n\n\n\n2. The Views\nAnother reason why Prague is the perfect getaway is because the views in the city are simply stunning!  My favorite spot to catch the sights is up at Letna Park, just on the other side of the river.  Its an easy walk up of the stairs for some of the most stunning views of town. Prague Castle\nReason number three has to go to the Prague castle.  This beautiful castle complex is on the other side of the river and sits on a little hill overlooking the city.  It is built in a Baroque style and has this very medieval feel to it.\n\n![DSC04980.JPG](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQEP2b8HjPZWUUokSJYTHPutvJb4qAFksknQ3pFjJTuYt/DSC04980.JPG)\n\nIn the middle of the complex is the St Vitus Cathedral, a beautiful church with very intricate details.  The style reminds me of the Cathedral in Cologne, with a merge of different styles.\n\n\n\n\nDuring the Christmas period, there were little Christmas huts next to the cathedral.  The coolest of them all was a blacksmith who was hammering away!  It really added to the whole castle experience.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n4. The Food\nYou cannot go on a weekend gateway and not have good food.  Although Prague isn't famous for anything in particular, it still has a great range of restaurants on offer.  Restaurants will serve up some typical dishes such as pork knuckle, sausages and so on.  But the biggest surprise we had was a fine dining lunch at Field.  This Michelin starred restaurant has the most incredible 10 course menu.  \n\n\n\nThe dishes are literally named after the ingredients found in the dish.  Snail Parsnip Garlic Bacon was a dish filled with soft snails, creamy parsnip which came with a bit of crunch and cheese.  Sturgeon, vegtables nut, spruce was a real mouthful of lemon, macadamia nuts, fish and seaweed.  \n\n\n\nThe most theatrical dish has to be the Lamb Gouda Raisin.  There was a lot of smok and dry ice effect that came with a little tart wth gouda and raisins.  It was very meaty and crunchy with a contrasting sweetness from the raisins!  All very magical! \n\nMy favourite dish of the day has to be the 45 days aged beef, veal brain, celeriac, morel.  A combination of tasty beef, celeraic, an intense gravy muched with veal brain.  A real mouthful! \n\n\n\n\n\nAll the dishes here were just amazing and well worth the money, especially if you were doing a short weekend getaway! \n\n\n\nFor those looking for a quick snack in the markets, make sure also to try out Trdelnik.  You will find the chimney looking baked goodness pretty much everywhere you go.  It looks sweet, soft and delicious! \n\n\n\n \n5. The Wines\nPrague and the majority of central eastern Europe is all very famous for their beers and lagers.  What is a bit of an unknown is the quality of wines on offer, especially in Czech republic.  We managed to sample quite a range of different types of wines and concluded that local reds were not great, but the whites were stunning!   The best place to try wines is at Vinograf wine bar.  They serve up some really fresh and local wines and their range is pretty impressive! There were so much history to see, places to visit and incredible foods to enjoy.
