| body | Our question is: What prompts people to seek the truth; how do they find it and what obstacles must they overcome? With this question in mind we read 3 books in which people had a great need to find the truth and we looked at how they went about finding it. We read Anthem by Ayn Rand which was about an ultra collectivist society and the main character was questioning the bad logic of the leaders. We also read Catch 22 by Joseph Heller about pilots during war time who were being asked to fly a quota of missions but just before they met their quota a larger quota was given to them. Finally, we read Discourse on Method by Rene Descartes who was a 17th century philosopher who had come to realize everything he had been taught could not be counted on. In all of these books the characters derived a means of finding the truth that worked for them. In every case it involved questioning the “truth” they were being given. Let's use the examples of how the characters in these books found the truth to answer our question. What prompts people to seek the truth; In Catch 22, one of the characters put crab apples in his mouth and Yosarian, the main character, was curious about his strange behavior and wanted to know exactly why he did that. He asked questions until he found out the main reason why he put them in his mouth. “That the will as well as the understanding is required for judging.” This just means that you have to want to know the truth and understand what you are observing before you figure out what is going on. In anthem Equality 72521 found a cave from the past that had light bulbs and this tech got him to really start questioning what he had been told by his collective society. The next question is how do they find the truth Rene Descartes decided that he needed a specific method to find the truth and one of the most important steps in his method was to look very closely at the information that he had and in his words“lay aside our prejudices” and make a “Summary of what must be observed in order to philosophize correctly.” Descartes created a 4 step process a- Accept ideas as true and justified only if they are self-evident. an idea is self evident if it is clear and distinct in one’s mind. b- Analysis: divide complex ideas into their simpler parts. c- Synthesis: reach complex ideas by starting with ideas that are the simplest to know. d- Exhaustive and complete: the inquiry should be complete and comprehensive. Nothing left out. In Anthem The main character whose name is Equality 7-2521 found a book that had been written prior to the existence of the collective. This book contained the word “I”. He realized that he was an individual and he could apply his own thoughts to what he was being told. what obstacles must they overcome? Descartes was very concerned about the obstacle of prejudice which could distort a true understanding of the world around him. He perceived that , “These truths are clearly perceived, but do not equally by all men, on account of prejudice” People perceive things differently based upon their experiences. “The chief cause of our errors is to be found in the prejudices of their childhood.” When we are children we take in all the information we are told without thinking if it makes sense, logical or has evidence. “That to correct the prejudices of our early years, we must consider what is clear in each of our simple notions.” We should try and find all of the holes in our beliefs that we took in before we had reason. “We attach our thoughts to words which do not express them with accuracy.” When definitions of words don’t match with reality finding the truth is very difficult. “We cannot forget these prejudices.” We can see that many people seek the truth and what they have in common is that they need a reason reason to seek it, a way to seek, and ways to overcome the obstacles that they run into. So we would like to conduct a little exercise in finding the truth. Have you ever heard anything that you thought made no sense at all? What did you do? Did you ask about it or leave it alone? Phrase #1 Now let’s do one together. Here is our statement, “It is forbidden not to be happy... Men are free and the earth belongs to them; and all things on earth belong to all men; and the will of all men together is good for all; so all men must be happy.” If men are free why is it “forbidden not to be happy”? Do all things on earth belong to all men? Is the will of all men good for all? You can be happy or unhappy regardless of the emotional state of others. Phrase #2 “we all know the things which exist and therefore the things which are not known by all do not exist.” Do they know all the things that exist? What if you don’t know what you don’t know? What is the relationship between knowing something and it existing? What if a few people know something exists but others aren’t aware of it? If someone has a new idea is it automatically invalid and nonexistent? “Secrets of this earth is not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them.” We don’t know everything that exists things that are not known still might exist. Phrase #3 We’re going to put on the screen a statement made by the leaders of the collective in Ayn Rand’s book. “What is not thought by all men cannot be true.” If what is thought changes, does reality also change? What if all men are wrong? Since everyone can’t have the same thoughts; wouldn’t all thoughts be wrong? If I have a thought that’s not shared can it be true? What is thought by all men has little correlation with the truth. Phrase #4: If we were to take this phrase and relate it to laws made through the democratic process you would get the phrase; Laws made by people who were voted on by people are good and disobeying them is evil. Does that mean good and evil change depending on what laws are written down by politicians? Wouldn’t that mean good and evil is subjective? Is something good because a politician said so or did the politician say so because it is good? To get rid of all of these problems with this phrase I will change it to; Laws either are correct, in line with what is good or evil or it isn’t either way the law is irrelevant to what is good or evil. It’s always important to find the truth about what’s going on around you and I hope this has helped. |

| body | THE CHAMBER Steve had just left the therapist's office. Three weeks ago he had been fired from his construction job for getting in a fight for the third time, and he was told that he had to get therapy. Dr. Frost, his therapist, had just diagnosed Steve as a sociopath. Dr. Frost seemed like a well meaning person, but in Steve’s state of mind, he knew that, as a therapist, Dr. Frost could take away his freedom by putting him in a mental institution. He was a threat to Steve’s existence. Ever since childhood Steve had only one way to deal with threats; to torture and eliminate them. It hadn’t been the first time he tortured and eliminated someone. Steve had a torture chamber in his basement. As he left the psychiatrist's office after his 3rd visit Steve heard Dr. Frost on the phone. Dr. Frost was concerned because he thought Steve was dangerous. Steve assumed that he was calling the police and he now knew that he would be caught no matter what. His twisted mind reasoned that there was no reason to wait to dispose of Dr. Frost so he went home and got his torture chamber ready for his next victim. He then returned to the office at the end of Dr. Frost’s business hours. Steve felt skittish and jumpy, but he knew that he didn’t have any other choice but to do what he had always done so he had to concentrate his mind. As Dr. Frost was walking into the parking lot Steve tased him, put him in his car and took him to his torture chamber where he was about to take all his anger and other horrible emotions out on him. As he was on his way, he kept hearing a high pitched ringing noise coming from the back seat where Dr. Frost was tied up. Steve brought Dr. Frost into the torture chamber. He started by covering him in pure gasoline. He lit him on fire and immediately dipped him in water and kept him under until just before he started to drown. He did this multiple times. He then dipped his feet in boiling oil in a way that caused the most pain with the least amount of physical damage. Then he ground off all his toenails and connected him to a cross. Steve lit the cross on fire, turned it upside down and dipped it in water. He lit the cross on fire again and dipped him again in water. Steve then attached the charred crucifix to the wall and connected the machine that threw tomahawks. The tomahawks flew near his nearly dead body but each one barely missed him. All of a sudden the door was busted open and the head of the Police Swat Team burst in and stood face to face with Steve. Steve looked at the guy and he knew it was over. He was caught and he would have to live the rest of his life in prison for what he had done. His mind flashed back to all the people he had killed because they had threatened him. He looked back and saw how much worse off he was now because of it. The head of the Swat Team said to the officer next to him, “It was a good thing we had that tracking device on Dr. Frost so that we could follow him here.” Steve dropped to his knees as the sound of the ambulance’s sirens rang in his ears. |

| body | Public schools have been overwhelmed by technology but this school system was never designed with technology in mind. An alternative system needs to be created that uses technology to give the best advantage to the learning experience. A sudbury school allows the students to have complete control over their own education. Instead of telling the students what they need to learn, the student gets to choose what they want to learn. Just because our school system isn’t compatible with technology doesn’t mean we should ban technology. Rather we should alter the school system to be more compatible with it. People getting enhanced For many students technology greatly enhances their experience of the class. They are interested in the subject matter and are they using technology to assist their learning. What student wouldn’t be enlivened by, “sitting in a classroom [in tennessee] but the guest lecturer is sitting in his home office in [eastern europe] via video technology.” As described by Ellen Granberg of Vanderbilt university.(A) technology can also be used to communicate between students and teachers. Willyn Webb “uses phones to poll students in class and send homework reminder text messages.”(C) But these are the students that are already interested in the class they are taking. What about the students that aren’t interested in the classes they are forced to take. Perhaps the system isn’t working for them. People get dragged behind When students don't get to choose what class they want to take and find themselves in a class in which they have no interest, technology becomes an escape and they become lost. One teacher describes this problem by saying she has to become “...an entertainer. I have to do a song and dance to catch their attention.”(B) If the student could choose what they want to learn they might be more inclined to tune in. perhaps it is the system that needs to change and not the use of technology. Counter The confusion about trying to fit technology into a system that is not compatible with it causes many frustrated reactions. Such as David Gelernter’s statement “But the Web propagandized relentlessly for glitz and pictures, for videos and stylish packaging. And while its full of first-rate information, it is also full of lies….”(D) David may be frustrated because he is trying to put a square peg in a round hole. Perhaps we are trying to insert technology into a system that can’t accept it. Why is Glitz bad? Glitz is just eye catching. That just means that when using technology the topic will be more interesting. Maybe David should take advantage of the glitz and make an interesting class for students that choose to be there. Conclusion By allowing students to choose what they want to learn we could alter the current school system which will allow students to be more interested in what they are learning and allow more effective use of technology. Our current school system needs to enter the modern world. And adapt itself to the massive amount of information we have at our fingertips. |

| body | Dennis Prager, in his Youtube video recorded on March 20, 2017 argues that If There Is No God, Murder Isn't Wrong. He contrasts the secular world with the judeo-christian world and concludes that in a secular world there can only be opinions about morality. In contrast in the judeo-christian world is predicated on a god of morality. To make his point Prager Uses the example of murder to get at the meaning of the word wrong. He concludes that “only if god says murder is wrong is murder wrong.(Prager)” Prager’s view brings up further questions. Does morality need a divine command to be objective or is that a contradiction? Can Morality be objective with a divine command or is that command influenced by personal feelings or opinions? Dennis Prager thinks Morality is only objective if God tells people what and good and bad and morality would be relative if there was no one telling them what was good or bad. Morality can be objective without god. Morality can’t be objective if it’s just what some authority told you was good or bad; it has to come from using your mind and reason to logically figure out what is good and what is bad for yourself. Reason #1: Euthyphro’s dilemma is a greek term that gives two scenarios of ethics relating to god. It states that: The First horn of the dilemma is; good is good because God wills it to be good The Second horn is; God wills what is good because it is good(Koukl par 1). If the first horn is true then morality isn’t objective it is arbitrary. If God were to give commands to kill with the first horn true then it would be moral to kill. It would be like if there was a magical unicorn that decided what was a pencil and what was not and if it decided a chair was a pencil then chairs were now pencils. God could just change his mind and for people who think the bible is about what God has done then god has commanded people to kill many times. If the second horn is true then you don’t need god to know what is moral. It would be like someone telling you the sky was blue because it is blue. You don’t need this person to say the sky is blue for it to be blue; he was just telling you what it was. if something is moral because god said it was moral then morality is arbitrary but if god says it is moral because it is moral then you don’t need god to know what is moral. Connect Evidence to Claim through strong warrant Prager is assuming that the first statement is true while also assuming morality is not based upon opinion. This causes a contradiction. Reason #2: places that reject the divine command theory of morality have a lower crime rate. If you look at the crime rates, prosperity, equality, freedom, women’s rights, human rights, educational attainment and life expectancy of countries you will find that in secular countries they are higher and the most religious countries have the highest “violent crime rates, high infant mortality rates, high poverty rates and high rates of corruption”(Zuckerman Par. 4 ). If you just want to look at how much more peaceful secular societies are The global peace index shows that “Each of the 10 safest and most peaceful nations in the world is also among the most secular... Most of the least safe and peaceful nations, conversely, are extremely religious.(Par. 6 Zuckerman)” The countries that are the most secular, “Sweden, Japan, Norway and the Netherlands,” also have the lowest homicide rates(Par. 5 Zuckerman). Also the countries that are the most theistic, “Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador and Brazil” have the highest Homicide rates. This shows that the notion that if god didn’t tell people that murder was wrong then people would kill is wrong. In the places where people listen to god’s commands there are more homicide rates and the places where people don’t listen to god’s commands there are less. It seems that religion causes people to be less moral not more moral and that for someone to be moral they need to reject the idea of a god of morality. Reason # 3 The use of The Categorical imperative which is derived from first principles, The law of non contradiction and the consistency principle, will lead to a very peaceful society. Actions that derive from first principles lead to moral behavior. Categorical imperative, which derives from first principles, says to Behave in such a way that a reasonable generalization of your action to a universal rule will lead to a benefit. If you cannot will that everyone follows the same rule, your rule is not a moral one. It is basically the the golden rule. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. (KANTIAN) The Non aggression principle is a principal that stems from the Categorical imperative and first principles. It states that One shouldn’t initiate force against another and only time to use force is in self defense. This principle can be universally followed by everyone and if it were the world would be very peaceful. If you start from first principles it will lead you to objective moral action. In our current secular world the rate of death due to wars have diminished from the time periods in which morality was based upon religion doctrine. Even if individuals rely on the judeo-christion value that morality is due to the existence of god, the forces of science and reason may overcome that irrationality. People should embrace the use of objective values based on reason and logic by using reason to know what is moral rather than using an authority figure. Dennis Prager, in other youtube videos, agrees that the use of reason is better than the use of feelings or mystical whims. It would be well to support his comments in these areas where he does use logic and reason. Works cited "KANTIAN ETHICS." , www.csus.edu/indiv/g/gaskilld/ethics/kantian%20ethics.htm. Koukl, Greg. | body | The Hypocrisy of Hanging During the age of imperialism, the British invaded Burma and forced the indigenious Burmese to give their resources to them without consent. Since this exchange was involuntary and something that wouldn’t have occurred without the initiation of force by the Britsh, it wasn’t a win-win scenario. The British lost the opportunity to treat the Burmese with respect and it was a win-lose scenario. George Orwell describes this imbalance of power with piercing symbolism, biting irony and revealing imagery showing that it is immoral to execute people, subjugate them and ignore the fact that they are human - humans who have the potential to help enrich everyone else with their minds. Orwell’s description of the Burmese prison and the prisoners is symbolic of the entire country of Burma which had been beaten down by the British. His comparison of the prisoner and the superintendent symbolize the disparity between the ruling British and the defeated indigenious people. The prisoner himself is condescendingly cartoonish with a mustache “absurdly too big for his body”. This idea is extended by the simile that compares him to “a comic man on the films”(2). The mustache of the prisoner is contrasted with the crisp “toothbrush” mustache of the superintendent which indicates the superior status of the British officer. Later, when the prisoner is taken to the gallows, he is described as like a fish “which is still alive and may jump back into the water”(2). This symbolizes the vitality of the prisoner and shows that the aware consciousness of the prisoner is still present even though it has been seemingly beaten out of him. A dog appears in the scene which symbolizes the joy which is clearly absent from any of these men. When this fragment of joy appears it is quickly squashed by the controlling guards. Another powerful symbol is the puddle that the prisoner side steps. It is the nature of a puddle to reflect, and the puddle reflects the reflexes that are very much alive in the prisoner as he steps to a side to avoid it. Suddenly the prisoner is not just a subject of the suffocating British rule but a thinking and reacting human being. This prompts the narrator to see the “unspeakable wrongness of cutting a life short”(8). The prisoner’s body is alive and this is made clear by a list which describes how each part of the body is functioning. “bowels digesting food, skin renewing itself, nails growing, tissues forming-all toiling away in solemn foolery”(8). These symbolic elements show the dreadful harshness of subjugating people when they still have a working, useful mind. There is an all encompassing irony to the whole narrative which shows the inconsistency between the British and the Burmese. They are hanging this man for some crime and we don’t know what it is, but the guards and all of the people involved in hanging him are the ones committing the crime. They are not being hanged for their crime. They get no punishment at all. The writer uses logic from the law of non-contradiction to show the irony of hanging people. The law of non-contradiction means that two things that are mutually exclusive can’t both be true. You can’t have A and not A be true at the same time. They are all humans, but the prisoner is being put to death for a crime and the other humans, who are executing the prisoner, are also technically committing a crime, but they are not hanged. Shouldn’t they both be sent to the gallows? The illogic of execution is astounding. Orwell again uses irony as he depicts the dog, the only expression of joy in the scene. It is ironic for a bouncing dog to be seen as “dreadful”, but in the upside down world that Orwell is showing us there is no room for spontaneity “A dreadful thing had happened-a dog come goodness knows whence...tried to lick his face”(5). A dog licking someone's face isn’t usually a dreadful thing, but when they are hanging someone the dog’s innocence illuminates just how immoral they are. In reality it is dreadful because it undermines the credibility of officious magistrates pursuing the act of hanging someone. One last bit of irony occurs when the officials discuss a previous hanging at which the guards were having trouble with a “refractory” condemned man. Francis complains to the prisoner, "think of all the pain and trouble you are causing to us!" It was the prisoner who was the one that was feeling the pain. He was going to be killed. The guard has it backwards; he is the one forcing the prisoner to be hanged, and the prisoner’s resistance somehow causes pain for the aggressor. In A Hanging Orwell creates revealing imagery to show how horrible the injustice of execution is. The image of “brown men” who were contained in cages indicates that the indigenous were the only prisoners and the British were exempt from incarceration. Orwell shows the condemned prisoner as destitute and weak. He then shifts to a description of the British who are irritable and authoritarian. This shift increases a sense of disparity by juxtaposing the despair of the prisoners and the arrogance of the people in charge of the jail. When the guards are taking the prisoner to the gallows, the image of a dog licking the prisoner’s face increases the tension by bringing life and joy into the scene. At the actual execution the prisoner cries out desperately for his god. The writer causes our hearing to be pierced when he describes the prisoner’s tortured cry to his god before he is about to be executed “Ram! Ram! Ram! Ram!”(10). This agonizing despair is emphasized by the fact that the dog answers each syllable with a whine. After the execution a Eurasian boy pulls out a silver cigarette case in an attempt to impress his superior and switch the subject from the reality of the life that’s been taken to a shiny object. Orwell clearly shows that these hangings were desensitizing the minds of the British as well as the Burmese by making them commit acts that they found to be wrong. These horrid acts inhumanity needed to be emphasized in order to wake the reader up. To do this he used powerful symbols biting irony and vivid imagery to allow the reader to be there and experience the shame of the situation. The person who was hanged probably didn’t do anything that involved a victim or he committed a crime that the colonists did all the time. Stealing and killing were things that the colonists needed to do to keep power in Burma. If colonists didn’t steal or punish the oppressed people there would be no political power for the colonists. The British reasoned away their hypocrisy by viewing the indigenous people as subhuman, but Orwell, in his depiction of a brutal hanging, would not allow that. He wanted to show the world that the British refused to treat the Burmese like humans and, instead, they treated them like animals. |

He wanted to show the world that the British refused to treat the Burmese like humans and, instead, they treated them like animals.",
