titleThe World's Most Pitiful Mining Rig (Part 1/2)
body# Purpose Last year I considered mining but felt like it was "too late". I deeply regret that decision and this past month I decided to rectify my mistake. I have never put together a computer before and to be frank, I was very intimidated by all the odd combinations of letters and numbers in the names of the GPUs. But with the help of some friends and after doing a lot of research I was able to get started. I have learned so many things building this rig and I want to share what I have learned with other people who may also be interested in building a rig but don't know where to start. I am creating two posts for this project. In this first post I will go into detail about what you need in order to build a rig and will go into particular detail about what you need to know about GPUs and how to pick out to suit your needs. In the second post I will show how to put all the hardware together, boot up ethOS, and join a mining pool. After everything was said and done, I looked at my mining rig and deemed it the World's Most Pitiful Mining Rig because it looked so sad with only two GPUs zip tied to the shelf and the motherboard "mounted" on the box it came in. But even though it is pitiful, it has brought me an immense amount of joy. ![rig1.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYoAwFJLZUtJLaBttxBb1cRZzmonQMujgyhAnPMgor9r5/rig1.JPG) # What You Need For A Rig It is important to keep your initial costs as low as possible so that you can make back a return sooner. ### Motherboard The motherboard is what connects everything together. It has several PCIe slots. These are the connection between the GPU and motherboard, so the number of PCIe slots will the number of GPUs you can connect to the board. I got a motherboard with 12 PCIe slots so I don't have to deal with buying another motherboard and essentially another system for as long as possible. I am using the Gigabyte GA-B250-FinTech LGA 1151 Intel ATX Cryptocurrency Mining 12PCIE 3.0 DDR4 Motherboard, $194. ### Power Supply Unit (PSU) Arguably, PSUs are becoming harder to find than GPUs. There are two things to take into consideration when buying a PSU: wattage and efficiency. PSUs come in several wattages that they can support. For mining I would look for anything between 850W and up. The highest I have seen out there is 1500W. An 850W PSU can support 4 GPUs whereas a 1200W PSU can support 6GPUs. So if you get a 12 slot PCie motherboard, you will need two 1200W PSUs to power the rig or three 850W PSUs. Two 1200W PSUs will take up less space and be cheaper than three 850W PSUs but the problem is it is very hard to find any 1200W PSUs in stock at the time of writing this article. You want to get one that is as efficient as possible (obviously), especially if you live in an area with high electricity costs. The efficiency of a PSU is indicated by a metal grading system. A Platinum 80 PLUS rating is very good, followed by gold, silver, and bronze. The efficiency difference between each of these is between 1.5-2% which may not seem like a lot, but when you are running a rig 24/7 those percentage points do add up. Also, make sure the power supply is the "80 PLUS". There is also titanium, which is even better than platinum but very hard to find in stock. Corsair is a very good brand. Both the HXi and AX series are great choices for mining. If you buy a Corsair PSU one more feature you will encounter is LINK compatibility. LINK compatibility is a Corsair feature that lets you tap directly into the PSU to see measurements like voltages and its current specifications. It sounds like a neat feature, but from people I have talked to it is an unnecessary one and no one really uses it even if they have it. It usually jacks up the PSU cost by around $20. Ideally I would prefer two 1200W Platinum 80+ PSUs with no LINK compatibility, but sadly that is not going to happen with my first rig because I could not find one in stock. I am using the 850W Corsair Platinum 80+ PSU with LINK capability, $190. ### CPU You don't need a top of the line CPU. I am using the Intel Core-i3-7100 7th Gen Core Desktop Processor 3M Cache, 3.90GHz, $115. ### RAM 8GB or 16GB is required. Make sure your motherboard memory matches your RAM. So if your motherboard is DDR4, your RAM must be as well. I went with only 8GB of RAM knowing that as my rig grows I will need to upgrade eventually to 16GB. I just wanted to cut initial costs where I could. I am using the Corsair LPX 8GB DDR4 DRAM 2133MHz C13, $106. ### PCIe Risers This is what your GPU sits on and then gets connected to the motherboard. If you just have 1 GPU you don't need this because you can connect the single GPU directly to the board. You can get two PCIe risers for around $20. ### Solid State Hard Drive (SSD) I got a 60GB (yes, 60. I don't know why 60 instead of 64 but it was 5 bucks cheaper so I didn't ask any further questions) because I chose a light weight operating system. Lots of people mine with Windows 10 which is a great option. If you choose Windows 10 get at least a 128 GB SSD. The 60GB SSD was $30. ### Operating System I chose ethOS, the light weight linux-based operating system. You can find out where to buy it from their website: http://ethosdistro.com/ It is $39 and you can do a direct download on a separate hard drive and then put it on your SSD that will be used for mining, or you can pay $39 and get a usb with the distro shipped to your house. Alternatively, it is open source so I am sure you can probably to find it for free somewhere. Lots of people choose to mine on Windows 10 which is a very good choice because it is convenient and it is the only OS that allows you to easily mix AMD and NVIDIA gpus which is awesome. Personally, I just like Linux so that is a big factor as to why I am using ethOS. ### Frame For my janky rig I zip tied my GPUs on a $19 shelf from Home Depot, set the motherboard on top of the box it came in, and precariously placed the power supply lowest shelf wherever there was room. This really is not smart and is in no way a long term solution, but it works for now until I acquire what I need for the frame design I currently have floating around in my head. You can buy fancy mining rig frames, they are usually a couple hundred bucks. Or you can make your own. Don't use a classic computer chassis though, the GPUs will get too hot. The one exception would be if you have a single GPU and you take all the sides off the chassis to prevent overheating. ### Ethernet Cable An Ethernet cable is needed to connect your motherboard to your internet router. ### Extension Cord (optional) An extension cord is needed if the PSU cord is not long enough for your needs. ... and lastly ... # GPUs!!! ## GPU Basics There are two kinds of GPUs used for mining: AMD and NVIDIA. Several manufacturers produce these GPUs. Some of the best manufacturers are ASUS, EVGA, MSI, and Sapphire. Only buy your GPUs from a well known sellers like Amazon or NewEgg. Do not buy from a third party seller on those sites and do not buy from eBay. The GPU manufacturer's tend to not like people using their GPUs to mine. This surprised me at first, but it does make sense because the GPUs see a lot of wear and tear because they are ran 24/7. Most GPUs are warranted for 4 years in the US and the GPU is more liable to break in that time period under these conditions in comparison to being used for traditional gaming purposes. In China, they no longer warranty GPUs for this reason so those of us in the US should take advantage of the long warranty period while we can. ## Not All GPUs Are Created Equal Before mining, the largest application for GPUs was for gaming. There are features that are good for gaming but not needed for mining that a GPU can make it expensive. There are then several generations of GPUs, but not all are good for mining. One of the main thing a miner cares about is the hash rate. You can get more hashing power out of a GPU if you over clock it (denoted as OC in table below). Overclocking essentially means you are making the GPU output more hashing power than it was originally designed to do. To over clock a GPU you need to modify its BiOS. You do not want to overclock it too much though because it can overheat and break. The following GPUs are usually the ones used for mining: ![Screen Shot 2018-02-22 at 8.39.49 PM.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTQVWNzn8Df6AkB5bXACKEpikZ43KEzkBuUJsSPuXoLbP/Screen%20Shot%202018-02-22%20at%208.39.49%20PM.png) AMD also has RX480s and RX460s, and NVIDIA has GTX1050s. Don't buy those to mine. Their hash rates are too low. The other very important thing is that the GPU should be 6GB or higher. Never get 4GB. ## GPUs In Relation To Mining The type of coin you want to mine determines which type of GPU you want to buy. To mine ETH you just want the cheapest GPU with the highest hash rate and the lowest power consumption. So given the above table, the 1070s and 580s are the best for ETH. If you want to mine Monero or ZCash, the 1080s and 1080TIs are actually the best. Different GPUs are better for different coins because of the differences in each coin's algorithm. This is something that I am still learning about an cannot speak to in detail yet. As previously stated, you cannot easily mix AMD's and NVIDIA's unless you are using Windows 10 for your OS. I am mining ETH and I chose to go with AMD because at the current moment the RX580s are much easier to get than the 1070s. There is usually at least one 580 model in stock on https://www.newegg.com/. This could change though because NVIDIA is coming out with a new generation in March. Depending if this new line is good or bad for mining it could create a higher demand for 580s. No one knows. I currently have two RX580 GPUs. One is ASUS that I bought from a friend for $420, the other is MSI that I bought from NewEgg for $400. They are both 8GB. A great resource to determine which coin is optimal to mine with a specific mix of GPUs is https://whattomine.com/. In the top two rows just enter the number of which ever GPU models you want to use, then your kWh electricity cost, and it will give you a fairly good estimate of how much you will net for a specific coin. # Final Product Here it is again in all its glory. ![rig1.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYoAwFJLZUtJLaBttxBb1cRZzmonQMujgyhAnPMgor9r5/rig1.JPG) Here is the very first picture of it (poor quality because it was late at night and my tiny apartment is very badly lit). ![rig2.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmP1WS6u1FrvoRitknsdHEGVznB9NhDFV35T8dfL6r8KRt/rig2.JPG) And here is a picture of it with one of my cats for scale. ![rigcat.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNrV8xSa5btg8N51CWtuJ5VibZwxehfnquwW3wjs9p3DP/rigcat.JPG) In the next post I will detail exactly how to put everything together.

I have never put together a computer before and to be frank, I was very intimidated by all the odd combinations of letters and numbers in the names of the GPUs. But with the help of some friends and after doing a lot of research I was able to get started. I have learned so many things building this rig and I want to share what I have learned with other people who may also be interested in building a rig but don't know where to start.\n\nI am creating two posts for this project. In this first post I will go into detail about what you need in order to build a rig and will go into particular detail about what you need to know about GPUs and how to pick out to suit your needs. titleHow To Bitcoin
body# Purpose I got in the crypto game in late 2016. Immediately I became obsessed, imploring all my friends to buy bitcoin and ethereum. Whenever I mentioned it at social gatherings and work lunches, I was met with blank stares immediately followed by the feeling of everyone in the room collectively shifting away from me in unison. Clearly I was a crazy person to be so taken with a system not backed by a trusted government system. If I did get a response back it was always the classic "Don't you know how volatile it is?" or "It's a scam. Don't you know you are getting scammed?" or even "Maybe, but I'm too late to the party". Fall of 2017 this all started to change, however. Suddenly the people who scoffed at the idea before contacted me desperately asking how to buy bitcoin _right that very second_. So many people came to me asking how to start with crypto that I found myself sending the same email over and over and I eventually made a powerpoint explaining the basics. That felt so old fashioned and clunky though, so in the spirit of decentralization I have decided to take that information and create my first steemit post on how to simply get started with cryptocurrencies. This is not meant to be a technical article, just information for those wanting to get their toes wet. # Disclaimer This is not to be taken as financial advice. This document contains my personal thoughts and opinions and every reader should do their own research. The crypto market is extremely volatile and could plummet to nothing at any moment. The value of each cryptocurrency is completely dependent on what people are willing to pay for it making it extremely risky, but a lot of fun. # My Favorite Bitcoin Meme ![howToBuyBitcoin.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbFwy2bJvXYXRnyLHRrz9W8V3soSy68adFaeic7x5EB3a/howToBuyBitcoin.jpeg) # Brief Bitcoin Intro ## What is Bitcoin? **Bitcoin is a decentralized ledger.** Ok, but really, what is it? A work acquaintance postulated that the definition of Bitcoin (and many cryptocurrencies) will vary depending on who you ask. Purists want Bitcoin to redefine how the world views and uses money. Consumers and vendors want Bitcoin to be a storage of wealth. Investors want Bitcoin to be volatile so they can trade it like stocks. Software developers want Bitcoin to be a scalable development platform. Libertarians want Bitcoin to be a private currency free from government intervention. While this obviously not meant to be a technical explanation, it is one I really tend to gravitate towards when answering this question. There is a lot of truth to this answer because there are so many people coming from all walks of life that are joining the crypto community that I am not sure there is a "one size fits all definition". ## Why do mainstream economists hate Bitcoin? **Because the wrong people got rich.** Yes, this can be considered an over statement but it does carry a lot of truth. There are plenty of pitfalls when it comes to Bitcoin that must be overcome to achieve mass adoptability. However, I think the animosity felt about Bitcoin from the mainstream insiders steams from bitter regret that they sat on the sidelines while techies, rebels, cyber punks and the like made enormous gains. This sort of fear-mongering that surrounds Bitcoin was not felt during the dotcom boom in the 1990s or the housing market boom in the early mid 2000s. The difference is that those booms made the status quo rich, while the Bitcoin boom did not. # Risks and Rules ## Understand the risks You will experience massive gains and massive losses. The moment you decide to pull the trigger and buy a coin, be prepared for it to plummet. For this reason, never gamble with more money than you can afford to lose. Do your research before you buy. Believe in the technology and backing of the coin you decide to purchase. Once you buy, resist the temptation to constantly check the price. Don't be a Bitcoin Zombie. And of course, buy high sell low. But know you will never buy or sell at the perfect moment and be ok with that. Take the emotion out of the transaction. ## Rule 1 ### If you do not own your private keys, you do not own your crypto. Everyone transaction has a wallet address (a public key similar to the concept of an email address where the coins are sent) and a private key (a private string associated with the public key that allows the owner to access the coins). I will put up another post in the near future on public and private keys and wallets. Exchanges and many wallets do not give you access to your private key. This means that while your account balance does reflect what you have purchased, you do not truly have full control over your coins. If the exchange or wallet goes down for any reason, there is nothing stopping that platform from keeping all of your coins. You can lose everything. **There will be no recourse you can take.** This has in fact happened before. In 2016, Bitfinex went insolvent after a hack stole 36% (~$72 million at the time) of their users coins. Bitfinex confiscated the remaining user funds so they could keep the exchange open. They gave people what essentially amounted to IOUs once Bitfinex could recover. Bitfinex actually fufilled their IOUs but they technically did not have to. Recently, the Mercatox exchange shut down their RaiBlocks (XRB) wallets for maintence. For several days no one could access their XRB and could only trust that Mercatox would restore the service once again or sell their coins for bitcoin at a much lower than market value price. Additionally, another exchange called BitGrail has taken hostage many user's XRB recently and are forcing users to get verified before allowing them to transfer out their coins. BitGrail then proceeds to drags their feet on completing the verification process for weeks and sometimes months. Leaving many people in an anguished limbo. ## Rule 2 ### If you lose your private key, you lose your coins. With great power comes great responsibility. You and you alone are responsible for the protection and preservation of your private keys. If you lose your private key you will not be able to recover your coins. **There will be no recourse you can take.** If someone gains access to your private key and steals your coins, you will not be able to be reimbursed for your coins. **There will be no recourse you can take.** ## Rule 3 ### There are no do-overs when sending funds. If you are careless and send a coin to the wrong address or send a coin to a wallet that does not accept that coin, you will lose your coins. There is no one you can call to help you. Your coins are not backed by anything. You cannot stop the transaction. There is no one, or exchange, or wallet able to refund what you have lost. **There will be no recourse you can take.** # Taking the Plunge Now, finally here is what you need to know to actually buy your first crypto. ## Coinbase: Where everyone starts Coinbase has high fees but you pay for ease of use. You get the coin immediately and can use a credit card to purchase (which results in a higher fee than using a checking account). Also it is important to note that Visa and Chase are not treating Coinbase purchases like cash advances and are charging additionally fees. Very frustrating. The following coins are available for purchase via USD on Coinbase: Bitcoin (BTC) Ethereum (ETH) Litecoin (LTC) Bitcoin Cash (BCH) ## GDAX: When you are fed up with Coinbase fees GDAX is Coinbase's exchange. There are no fees (excluding the cash advance Visa or Chase fee) but it can take several days after you place your order for the USD to be deposited into your account. GDAX offers the same coins as Coinbase. You can transfer coins for free from Coinbase to GDAX. GDAX prices typically align with the market price, but there are a lot of new people in this space who don't know to check other exchanges before purchasing. When BCH hit Coinbase/GDAX it traded for as high as $9,500 while on other exchanges it stayed around $3,000. ## Expanding your horizons ### Altcoins! Altcoins! Altcoins! You will eventually get bored with the same old Bitcoin-Ethereum-Litecoin merry-go-round. When you do you will want to branch out to another exchange that offers more coins. There are numerous exchanges out there, but I will detail the more popular ones. ### Binance Offer a wide variety of coins and a fair user interface. Based in China. ### Poloniex Offers a decent number of coins with larger market caps and a slightly sleeker user interface. ### KuCoin Offers a wide variety of coins and has a nice user interface. ### Bittrex Offers a fair amount of coins. Cumbersome user interface. ### Gemini A good alternative to Coinbase for buying coins with USD. ### Robinhood At the time of writing this, Robinhood does not have an available crypto exchange. However, they are planning to release their platform designed to be a direct competitor to Coinbase in February. To start, they will be operational in 5 states: California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, and New Hampshire. For more information check out http://blog.robinhood.com/news/2018/1/24/dont-sleep . # Wrapping up This should give you just enough information to acquire your first Bitcoin. Again, this was not meant to be a technical explanation of crypto and everything stated is my personal opinion. I greatly welcome any feedback or constructive criticism.

"body": "# Purpose\nI got in the crypto game in late 2016. If I did get a response back it was always the classic \"Don't you know how volatile it is?\" or \"It's a scam. Don't you know you are getting scammed?\" or even \"Maybe, but I'm too late to the party\". \n\nFall of 2017 this all started to change, however. \n\nThis is not meant to be a technical article, just information for those wanting to get their toes wet.\n# Disclaimer\nThis is not to be taken as financial advice. This document contains my personal thoughts and opinions and every reader should do their own research.\nThe crypto market is extremely volatile and could plummet to nothing at any moment. The value of each cryptocurrency is completely dependent on what people are willing to pay for it making it extremely risky, but a lot of fun.\n\n# My Favorite Bitcoin Meme\n\n![howToBuyBitcoin.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmbFwy2bJvXYXRnyLHRrz9W8V3soSy68adFaeic7x5EB3a/howToBuyBitcoin.jpeg)\n\n# Brief Bitcoin Intro\n## What is Bitcoin?\n**Bitcoin is a decentralized ledger.**\n\n Ok, but really, what is it?\nA work acquaintance postulated that the definition of Bitcoin (and many cryptocurrencies) will vary depending on who you ask. \n\nPurists want Bitcoin to redefine how the world views and uses money.\nConsumers and vendors want Bitcoin to be a storage of wealth.\nInvestors want Bitcoin to be volatile so they can trade it like stocks.\nSoftware developers want Bitcoin to be a scalable development platform.\nLibertarians want Bitcoin to be a private currency free from government intervention.\n\nWhile this obviously not meant to be a technical explanation, it is one I really tend to gravitate towards when answering this question. There is a lot of truth to this answer because there are so many people coming from all walks of life that are joining the crypto community that I am not sure there is a \"one size fits all definition\".\n\n## Why do mainstream economists hate Bitcoin?\n**Because the wrong people got rich.**\n\nYes, this can be considered an over statement but it does carry a lot of truth. There are plenty of pitfalls when it comes to Bitcoin that must be overcome to achieve mass adoptability. However, I think the animosity felt about Bitcoin from the mainstream insiders steams from bitter regret that they sat on the sidelines while techies, rebels, cyber punks and the like made enormous gains.\n\nThis sort of fear-mongering that surrounds Bitcoin was not felt during the dotcom boom in the 1990s or the housing market boom in the early mid 2000s. The difference is that those booms made the status quo rich, while the Bitcoin boom did not. \n\n# Risks and Rules\n## Understand the risks\n\nYou will experience massive gains and massive losses.\n\nThe moment you decide to pull the trigger and buy a coin, be prepared for it to plummet. For this reason, never gamble with more money than you can afford to lose.\n\nDo your research before you buy. Believe in the technology and backing of the coin you decide to purchase.\n\nOnce you buy, resist the temptation to constantly check the price. Don't be a Bitcoin Zombie. \n\nAnd of course, buy high sell low. But know you will never buy or sell at the perfect moment and be ok with that. Take the emotion out of the transaction.\n\n## Rule 1\n### If you do not own your private keys, you do not own your crypto.\nEveryone transaction has a wallet address (a public key similar to the concept of an email address where the coins are sent) and a private key (a private string associated with the public key that allows the owner to access the coins). I will put up another post in the near future on public and private keys and wallets. \n\nExchanges and many wallets do not give you access to your private key. This means that while your account balance does reflect what you have purchased, you do not truly have full control over your coins.\n\nIf the exchange or wallet goes down for any reason, there is nothing stopping that platform from keeping all of your coins. You can lose everything. **There will be no recourse you can take.** \n\nThis has in fact happened before. In 2016, Bitfinex went insolvent after a hack stole 36% (~$72 million at the time) of their users coins. Bitfinex confiscated the remaining user funds so they could keep the exchange open. They gave people what essentially amounted to IOUs once Bitfinex could recover. Bitfinex actually fufilled their IOUs but they technically did not have to.\n\nRecently, the Mercatox exchange shut down their RaiBlocks (XRB) wallets for maintence. For several days no one could access their XRB and could only trust that Mercatox would restore the service once again or sell their coins for bitcoin at a much lower than market value price. \n\nAdditionally, another exchange called BitGrail has taken hostage many user's XRB recently and are forcing users to get verified before allowing them to transfer out their coins. BitGrail then proceeds to drags their feet on completing the verification process for weeks and sometimes months. Leaving many people in an anguished limbo.\n\n## Rule 2\n### If you lose your private key, you lose your coins.\nWith great power comes great responsibility. You and you alone are responsible for the protection and preservation of your private keys.\n\nIf you lose your private key you will not be able to recover your coins. **There will be no recourse you can take.**\n\nIf someone gains access to your private key and steals your coins, you will not be able to be reimbursed for your coins. **There will be no recourse you can take.**\n\n## Rule 3\n### There are no do-overs when sending funds.\nIf you are careless and send a coin to the wrong address or send a coin to a wallet that does not accept that coin, you will lose your coins. There is no one you can call to help you. Your coins are not backed by anything. You cannot stop the transaction. There is no one, or exchange, or wallet able to refund what you have lost. **There will be no recourse you can take.**\n\n# Taking the Plunge\nNow, finally here is what you need to know to actually buy your first crypto.\n## Coinbase: Where everyone starts\n\nCoinbase has high fees but you pay for ease of use. You get the coin immediately and can use a credit card to purchase (which results in a higher fee than using a checking account). Also it is important to note that Visa and Chase are not treating Coinbase purchases like cash advances and are charging additionally fees. Very frustrating.\n\nThe following coins are available for purchase via USD on Coinbase:\n\nBitcoin (BTC)\nEthereum (ETH)\nLitecoin (LTC)\nBitcoin Cash (BCH)\n\n## GDAX: When you are fed up with Coinbase fees\nGDAX is Coinbase's exchange. There are no fees (excluding the cash advance Visa or Chase fee) but it can take several days after you place your order for the USD to be deposited into your account.\n\nGDAX offers the same coins as Coinbase. You can transfer coins for free from Coinbase to GDAX.\n\nGDAX prices typically align with the market price, but there are a lot of new people in this space who don't know to check other exchanges before purchasing. When BCH hit Coinbase/GDAX it traded for as high as $9,500 while on other exchanges it stayed around $3,000. \n\n## Expanding your horizons\n### Altcoins! Altcoins! Altcoins!\nYou will eventually get bored with the same old Bitcoin-Ethereum-Litecoin merry-go-round. When you do you will want to branch out to another exchange that offers more coins.\n\nThere are numerous exchanges out there, but I will detail the more popular ones.\n### Binance\nOffer a wide variety of coins and a fair user interface. Based in China.\n\n### Poloniex\nOffers a decent number of coins with larger market caps and a slightly sleeker user interface.\n\n### KuCoin\nOffers a wide variety of coins and has a nice user interface.\n\n### Bittrex\nOffers a fair amount of coins. Cumbersome user interface.\n\n### Gemini\nA good alternative to Coinbase for buying coins with USD.\n\n### Robinhood\nAt the time of writing this, Robinhood does not have an available crypto exchange. However, they are planning to release their platform designed to be a direct competitor to Coinbase in February. To start, they will be operational in 5 states: California, Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, and New Hampshire. \n\nFor more information check out http://blog.robinhood.com/news/2018/1/24/dont-sleep .\n\n# Wrapping up\nThis should give you just enough information to acquire your first Bitcoin. Again, this was not meant to be a technical explanation of crypto and everything stated is my personal opinion. I greatly welcome any feedback or constructive criticism.",
