| title | The Island-Off-Nowhere #4 Grandma Molasse |
| body |

Extreme weather events are now common to the living on the Island-off-nowhere. From temperatures exceeding forecasts to unforeseen, never-before-seen heavy rainfalls, the gas-induced atmosphere is disrupting the local ecosystem. The outcome so far is in line with what was predicted, and we still have a long way to go till doomsyear-2100.

In the never ending debate over whether the earth is spherical or flat, I favor option C: The earth is a slow, pressure cooker. It's been getting so hot in herre that one taking off all of its clothes won't suffice, unless you would be into an ugly version of an ad from Coca-cola. Additionally, humidity has been so dense that one day out grows a Rainforest over your head.

The Nowhereans have been talking about it lately. And what surprises me the most is that it's been less a conversation-starter and more like concerned citizens - from various backgrounds - conscious of the reality of climate change. And we can have a conversation about it. As long as the subsequent action doesn't infringe their own personal comfort and lifestyle.

For far too long, public accountability on this particular issue has been so insignificant that the gap between the need for tangible action and existing responses is making the objectives we've set ourselves too difficult to reach. Think of it as the fatty who gets on the treadmill, walks for 5 minutes, gets off it and gobbles down a thousand calories worth of biscuits because “Hey, I just exercised!”

By the looks of it, there is no way that pressure cooker can relieve itself of all the heat-trapping gas inside. Temperatures will keep on hitting record highs and torrential rains will keep on pouring onto our rainforest-heads. And as for future us, they will be using our corpses as a way to produce energy. Not that they have to, but it's more as retribution to what we put them through. From dino juice to grandma molasse.

These conditions have long-lasting consequences beyond repair. Take the Melondo Islands, for instance. They are similar to the Island-off-nowhere in that they're small, low-lying, still developing and remotely situated. Over there, rising sea level encroaching over land is giving a whole new meaning to waterfront living.

The locals, the Melondoans are peaceful islanders who were able to stave off the clarion call of globalization. Respectful of their lands, they live off it and the sea. That's how their ancestors lived, that's how their gods taught them to. Remember what famous Whateverland writer, Mark Train said about the archipelago, a place where “time stood still...”

But for some time now, the locals could tell that their livelihood was endangered. There are less fish in the waters and the waters are trimming the land. Huge chunks of land. And the land itself has been unproductive. Unstable weather patterns have impacted the harvests, foretelling troubled times.

Then came the Monetary Fund. All suits blazing, they made sense of the situation and offered to lend a hand, financially and economically. As long as the Melondoans are willing to do what they're told to get money in the country and repay their debts. And as long as this ecological paradise with the most pristine waters and ecosystem is used as collateral.

Now the Melondoans are confronted to this lose-lose situation where they either come up with 1 trillion Melondo Seeds to adapt to climate change, or accept displacement far from their ancestral lands. Melondoan gods did warn of a threat that would come from the sea, little did the people know that it was the sea itself.

In this part of the cooker, time is of the essence. Water reaching your doorstep is the sword of Damocles dangling dangerously over everybody. MYBAD, a group of developed nations known to emit the most did agree with great fanfare to <del>bail out</del> help these smaller countries impacted by higher temperatures. Money that will come in handy, on the condition that the Melondoans knew what to make of it.

So many things are at play now, and testing the resolve of the Melondoans. While the younger ones see no problem in moving abroad as climate refugees, the elders won't abandon their homes, their lands and history. There is also mistrust towards the foreigner, responsible for their demise. And looking to have their way once again.

To small island developing states, entire countries disappearing out of thick air should be a case for concern. And the Melondo Islands are no isolated case. A couple of sovereign states are now considered uninhabitable and their people have been granted temporary visas in Whateverland, on the same level as the millions flooding the continent for whatever reasons. Where do they go from there is a Chagossian nightmare.

The thing with MYBAD's initiative to fund the global action against climate change is how it draws the line between responsibility and accountability. No wonder it's non-binding. What it means to all these low-lying, coastal communities, is that they need to come up with their own contingency plans first, and have the bill sent to the powers that be. But what happens when, unsuccessful in its attempts a country is wiped out from the face of the cooker?

There is no legal framework that deals with this situation effectively.

Having special dispensation in place for the drifting asylum seekers won't compensate for the loss of a nation and its citizenship. This is no Ragnarok BS; In real life, people can't be bestowed with the many ingrained aspects of a whole country. From its diverse, physical facets to the inherent sociocultural heritage.

This whole thing should serve as a cautionary tale for the Island-off-nowhere. Unfortunately, the store-and-key of the .IO is a place where time-stood-dumbfounded. Despite back-to-back-to-back hard-hitting storms earlier this year; Despite the million degrees above normal; Despite the unusable harvests; the local authorities won't put the effort in fast tracking something that would reflect the urgency of the situation.

I guess no one has time for that.

|
