bodyIf you know much about crypto-currencies then it probably hasn't escaped your notice that companies are now issuing so called, Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs). There are several types, but the one that interests me is the most common type - the utility token ICO. In this scenario the company states that it will only take payment in x-coins in order to increase the value of the tokens as the company itself grows. Now, this could be viewed as quite appealing. In traditional investment, you are investing in the overall asset cap of a company, principally driven by the profits (or losses) that said company makes. It's not uncommon for companies to have huge revenue but be heavily loss making. They usually cover that by issuing more equity, which dilutes the stake of existing investors. With a utility coin, you are investing to some degree in the revenue of the company. That means, if people are using it, the value of your investment should increase regardless of the underlying performance of the company. How do you value such a thing though? I recently came across a paper by John P. Conley (2017. "Blockchain and the Economics of Crypto-tokens and Initial Coin Offerings," Vanderbilt University Department of Economics Working Papers 17-00008, Vanderbilt University Department of Economics.) https://ideas.repec.org/p/van/wpaper/vuecon-sub-17-00007.html This suggests that the Quantity Theory of money could be used. i.e. Token Value = Value of all transactions / (Number of tokens * velocity) Velocity is hard to calculate, but it seems to me that if a company was really successful it might live to regret having to take payment in utility tokens. It is probably going to make it as easy as possible for customers to convert fiat -> token , take payment in tokens and then sell those tokens to the next customer, probably in an automated fashion. So, let's assume in order to do that they are transacting on the Ethereum blockchain. A transaction is generally considered safe after 12 confirmations or 3 minutes. So the steps are: 1) Sell tokens to customer (1 transaction) 2) transfer tokens back to company for payment of goods 3) Repeat That's two transactions on the blockchain per actual transaction, or 87,000 actual transactions per year (max). Let's look at PowerLedger, the decentralised energy trading company. It has 363mln tokens in circulation at time of writing. For a revenue figure, let's use British Gas in the UK. They have revenues around $37 bln per year. So our minimal token value is: v = 37e9 / (363e6 * 87e3) = $0.001 each Powerledger tokens currently cost $0.42 on the open market! So in the more pessimistic case they would need revenues 400x those of one of the UKs largest energy suppliers just to not lose investors money. A complication with Powerledger is that POWR tokens won't be used directly to pay for transactions, they'll be used to generate Sparkz to do that. However, I struggle to see the difference other than that the velocity for Sparkz could actually be much higher. The main reason for doing it seems to be that a unit of electricity has a local price, whereas POWR tokens have a global value. Suppliers have to buy POWR tokens to generate sparkz. The faster they turn them round, the fewer they need. You now have incentive to maximise the velocity rate. You could argue that investors will HODL tokens to reduce the supply, though Powerledger reserve the right to print another 600mln of them! Let's try a sanity check. If people in the UK paid their BG power bill daily on an automatic basis, they would need a combined (27 bln / 365 =) £73k. Call it $100k. If they paid it in POWR that would mean each token is worth about $0.27. So, even in this somewhat optimistic scenario they'll need to be twice as big as British Gas for investor break-even.

bodyMost crypto-currencies are blockchain based. Essentially they use a distributed ledger to keep track of all transactions (ever) and come to a conclusion about the balance in any given wallet. The downside of this is the size of the ledger is enormous and keeps growing over time. Recently there have been some new coins that try to get away from this paradigm to provide something much more lightweight. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcTDsTTnR5EESSKs1r2P6sq5cfX3d2DvYemRNKdQDxstB/image.png) IOTA (MIOTA) The foremost of these is IOTA. Currently sat at number 10 in the market cap rankings, with a value of $6 bln USD. That's actually significantly down both in terms of ranking and a peak market cap of over $14 bln. This coin promises to be the currency for future Internet Of Things devices. A low cost, low latency network run by millions (billions) of IOT devices all across the globe. It isn't a Blockchain per se, but uses some called a 'Tangle'. Essentially, transactions cascade across the nodes on the network - the idea being that once that cascade starts it is very difficult (but not impossible) for a bad actor to intercept and change. IOTA has has mixed publicity recently due to a string of announcements (including one with Microsoft) which some would consider over-egged. Also, a Google suggests that a number of users have had problems with transactions going through. Binance, which trades IOTA, even suspending withdrawls for a time due to network congestion. That would seem odd as IOTA claim that the network should scale ('Scalable, Decentralized, Modular, No Fees'). I bought some IOTA and downloaded the software to get a node running. Given the lightweight nature of the protocol (all these IOT devices running as a node on the tangle), I was surprised to be offered the choice between a full and light client. Selecting a full node I was asked to provide the IP addresses of some neighbours. Reading the help on the IOTA page: "In order to run IRI and sync with the network, you need to have neighbors which want to pair with you. The easiest and fastest way to get neighbors is through our Slack, where you can join the #nodesharing channel to find neighbors. It should be noted that you have to share your own IP and port with your neighbors as well, because IOTA relies on mutual tethering for the data exchange. If you need help simply ask on Slack." So hang on. My IOT cryptocurrency which is going to run on all these IOT devices by default requires each one to be set up with IP addresses of its neighbours? Maybe I've misunderstood something here, but that sounds like a pretty major problem. Googling the reason for this suggests that there are security issues associated with auto-discovered neighbours. I have to highlight that this is the first ever time I have tried a crypto currency and not been able to easily run a full node. If you've worked in internet connected products (and I have), the last thing you want to be doing is adding configuration settings to them, especially ones that might be affected by where they end up. This adds effort, labour and significant cost. So what are the other options? ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVz2H1oib9qz4txMQ8gGtkH2Ku5YQ5H6fcucXFkQCTpdD/image.png) IoT Chain (ITC) This appears to be a direct competitor to IOTA, based in China. It's currently 148 in the market cap rankings and isn't even a functioning crypto-currency yet. It's just ERC-20 tokens which can be traded in at some point. Looking at the timeline on their website, they are looking at a mainnet launch in Q1 2019. So, this is fine for a speculative purchase but it's hard to say anything more than that. I'm also wary of any currencies that are the x-of-China, given how hostile China has become to crypto lately. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVRPhwAUGaPF8LKTSdkWRGuzfosixu5n54rhrektxsPrv/image.png) Nano (XRB) Nano, formerly RaiBlocks, has hit the news lately due to a loss of the coin from an exchange. However, so far the indications are that is the exchange's fault, rather than any fundamental weakness in the currency so it warrants a further look. Nano takes a different approach to the problem. It gives each account their own 'Blockchain' to manage. These are further simplified by the fact they can be pruned to remove the history, leaving only the account balance. Transactions between chains are performed via PoS and what appear to be MasterNodes (representatives). PoW is used, but only as an anti-spam measure. I'm still not entirely clear from reading the White Paper how the consensus across the network is formed. There is reference to a Ledger size so I assume that the Representatives maintain an overall ledger of balances of the individual child chains. Also, the software is all still in closed beta. There is a web wallet (which seems to work well), but the Windows software is not yet available and the Linux software is basic. Running a node requires a command-line setup, so this is now the second currency where I haven't been able to run a full node. However, Google suggests that auto-peering is available in Nano. Certainly transferring Nano coins was quick and easy. There is still a question mark in my mind with Nano, which is why would anyone run a full node if you can run a light client? Without fees on the network, there appears to be very little motivation. However, for now this is my IOT pick but I will keep an eye on 'Nelson' which is the proposed solution to the peering problem on IOTA while I await the full Nano wallet to trial.

bodyAs an investor in Cryptocurrencies, I find it useful to read other people's thoughts and research into various coins. I also do a fair amount of my own research and so I decided to periodically share that information in a blog format. So, what's in my portfolio and why? I should start out by saying that I'm long in Bitcoin. I've been a supporter for some time and I think first-mover advantage in this area is huge. After all there are only two categories - Bitcoin and Altcoins (everything else). ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaPwUzhdARL4PT7J6NVrcF9oCns9cc3nQxAUTKYnDjqFW/image.png) However, the alt-coins market has recently been far more interesting than the Bitcoin one. In fact in recent months a monkey with a keyboard could probably have increased the value of their portfolio 10x! To a certain extent, it hasn't mattered too much what you bought, with some noticeable exceptions (e.g. IOTA). However, there are hundreds of alt-coins and as a long term investor, how do you decide what to buy? ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdh6ax8BzNp5dudF99gxcgWmcFPtgKyS6CAmcwpW6Jeht/image.png) I approach this question by asking another question - does this coin have the potential to replace Bitcoin? There are many coins out there, but actually not that many have truely unique capabilities. Many are forks (copies) of other coins, some are just scams and other coins are not cryptocurrencies at all but tokens which allow you to invest in businesses that have raised money through ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings). So, here's a quick rundown of coins I think that have that potential and why: ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVC4gjTdMz9Xw5fwK95HZ5bKwagiEwjQgXgeMeoMxuNe3/image.png) (ETH) Ethereum is number two in market cap (total number of coins * value of each coin). It was the first serious coin to offer not just value, but also a platform on which other propositions can be built. Ethereum's smart contracts form the basis of the majority of ICOs out there and in some ways you could argue it has already overtaken Bitcoin. More transactions occur on the Ethereum network than any other. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmacoA6dyVB4v99pXf6ZSMNxuBrUhr75hFYSrYm2gKM99W/image.png) (XRP) Ok, so this one's controversial. Ripple is the anathema of cryptocurrencies to many people. It is a centrally controlled network with the vast majority of the coins controlled by the founding company. However, it is very fast and is being taken seriously by many financial institutions around the world. I hope it doesn't replace Bitcoin, but I have a few just in case. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdnP7bNeJLpyneJnAK2u8jUiwomiYcp9prDNcEk1FVsDG/image.png) (XLM) While I'm making myself unpopular, I also have Stellar Lumens. These started out a fork of Ripple but have evolved down a separate path and also have a working platform. Recently Stellar poached a company (Kin) off the Ethereum nework due to its speed and low cost. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf9drTDP3ZQsyvvm7SjNNFr3DgdaePQQbHHuqMRFBxnQD/image.png) (EOS) EOS doesn't even exist yet, it's an ERC-20 token - one of those Smart Contract based entities on the Ethereum blockchain. It is touting itself as an Ethereum killer due to its expected fast settlement time and high network capacity. It's one of a number of pseudo-decentralised coins which have a number of semi-centralised, high performance processing cores. It's raised over a billion dollars so far and is going to use that money to jump start companies seeking to use it as their blockchain. ![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYQWF95DHES9JMcjCQTDSep4r5p3BgYAPCFc29wjrgMSi/image.png) (XEM) This is a Japanese-centric currency and platform. It's based on the principle of Proof of Stake (i.e. the more coins you have, the more control you have over the network) with a few mods to make it 'Proof of Importance'. It is a relatively recent coin which uses something called ZK-Snarks to provide privacy on the blockchain. Other blockchains claim to be anonymous but really they're more obfuscated than anything else. All the transactions are stored on the blockchain in the clear and it's possible to link them together. It isn't just drug dealers and other neer-do-wells who would find this interesting. Imagine, you're a company using cryptocurrencies. Do you want your competitors to be able to see what you're paying your suppliers or even your staff? Thought not. Ultimately, I could see ZK-Snarks being added to other platforms such as Ethereum, but for now it's the main game in town. If I were to advise someone getting into Cryptocurrency investment what to buy, it would have to be Ethereum and EOS. With so many other companies depending on it, Ethereum isn't going anywhere soon and if it does, EOS is the most likely contender to replace it.

"body": "As an investor in Cryptocurrencies, I find it useful to read other people's thoughts and research into various coins. I also do a fair amount of my own research and so I decided to periodically share that information in a blog format.\nSo, what's in my portfolio and why? I should start out by saying that I'm long in Bitcoin. I've been a supporter for some time and I think first-mover advantage in this area is huge. After all there are only two categories - Bitcoin and Altcoins (everything else). \n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaPwUzhdARL4PT7J6NVrcF9oCns9cc3nQxAUTKYnDjqFW/image.png)\n\nHowever, the alt-coins market has recently been far more interesting than the Bitcoin one. \n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdh6ax8BzNp5dudF99gxcgWmcFPtgKyS6CAmcwpW6Jeht/image.png)\n\nI approach this question by asking another question - does this coin have the potential to replace Bitcoin? There are many coins out there, but actually not that many have truely unique capabilities. Many are forks (copies) of other coins, some are just scams and other coins are not cryptocurrencies at all but tokens which allow you to invest in businesses that have raised money through ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings).\nSo, here's a quick rundown of coins I think that have that potential and why:\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVC4gjTdMz9Xw5fwK95HZ5bKwagiEwjQgXgeMeoMxuNe3/image.png) (ETH)\nEthereum is number two in market cap (total number of coins * value of each coin). It was the first serious coin to offer not just value, but also a platform on which other propositions can be built. Ethereum's smart contracts form the basis of the majority of ICOs out there and in some ways you could argue it has already overtaken Bitcoin. More transactions occur on the Ethereum network than any other. \n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmacoA6dyVB4v99pXf6ZSMNxuBrUhr75hFYSrYm2gKM99W/image.png) (XRP)\nOk, so this one's controversial. \n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdnP7bNeJLpyneJnAK2u8jUiwomiYcp9prDNcEk1FVsDG/image.png) (XLM)\nWhile I'm making myself unpopular, I also have Stellar Lumens. These started out a fork of Ripple but have evolved down a separate path and also have a working platform. Recently Stellar poached a company (Kin) off the Ethereum nework due to its speed and low cost.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmf9drTDP3ZQsyvvm7SjNNFr3DgdaePQQbHHuqMRFBxnQD/image.png) (EOS)\nEOS doesn't even exist yet, it's an ERC-20 token - one of those Smart Contract based entities on the Ethereum blockchain. \n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYQWF95DHES9JMcjCQTDSep4r5p3BgYAPCFc29wjrgMSi/image.png) (XEM)\nThis is a Japanese-centric currency and platform.
