titleRohingyas Mourn U Aung Win Who Died As He Vowed
body
https://rohingyavision.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Aung-Win.png

Akyab — Rohingyas globally mourn U Aung Win over his shocking decease and remember his heroic struggle for the rights of the minority he belongs to, Rohingya.

Noor Muhammad, alias U Aung Win, hailing from Aung Mingalar Quarter of Sittwe has passed away on February 26, 2020 at around 9:00 p.m. in Sittwe General Hospital.

According to his neighbor Saed Muhammad, Noor Muhammad was born to Gulam Hussein, alias U Sein and Sokina Begum on December 10, 1953 at Maw Leik Quarter, Sittwe township. Noor is the second of his siblings comprising three brothers and one sister.

He acquired LL.B. in Sittwe Degree College. He worked at the Consulate of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Sittwe for about three years. He also took part in 1990 election. His father U Sein was a school teacher in Bali Bazar (Kyein Chaung), Maungdaw.

Due to his old aged health complications, he was admitted to the hospital where he breathed his last on Wednesday at the age of 67. His funeral rituals were performed in Hman Zi Cemetery of Sittwe and he was buried there at around 2:30 p.m. local time.

He was one of the victims of 2012 anti-Rohingya riots, when Rakhine extremists inhumanely attacked Rohingya, ruined their localities in several townships and uprooted over 120,000 people.

As he passed his last days playing a heroic role in defending his people, this is what history has recorded of him. Dr. Maung Zarni said, “U Aung Win indeed was a brave man who risked his life to tell the world about the genocide of his Rohingya community. He spoke in one of the very first genocide documentaries aired by AJE, while living in Sittwe. May he rest in peace.”

The media world is still echoing with Win’s statement “RNDP members are responsible for the 2012 violence. Dr. Aye Maung, he is only responsible person. I can challenge him face to face. I am not lying. You can show my face to the world.”

Remembering his colleague, ex-MP U Shwe Maung writes, “KO AUNG WIN was my colleague for the Hidden Genocide documentary film… He kept his word. He passed away today. His name will remain in the history of Rohingya forever. May Allah grant him the Janate Ferdooze (Paradise). Ameen!”

Win used to meet government representatives, media agencies, foreign delegations, journalists, researchers to talk on behalf of his oppressed community.

Calling him ‘an extraordinary Rohingya human rights activist,’ Nay San Lwin writes, “He held the firm belief that the rights and justice is essential for Rohingya. Over years while living in the Aung Minglar ghetto, he strived for the rights of Rohingya despite being denied the basic human rights.”

Saddened by Win’s decease, Maung Tun Khin writes “We lost a brave man in our community. We will never forget his contribution for our community.May Allah grant him Jannah.”

His younger generation is seen inspired by his commitment to peace-building, wise advocacy, and heroic bravery.

“We send our heartfelt condolences to uncle Win’s family members who have lost a devoted husband, father and grandfather.” writes CRDI.

“We are the natives of this country… I will DIE here.” Win once vowed in the Hidden Genocide documentary.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://rohingyavision.com/rohingyas-mourn-u-aung-win-who-died-as-he-vowed/

titleRohingyas Mourn U Aung Win Who Died As He Vowed
body
https://rohingyavision.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Aung-Win.png

Akyab — Rohingyas globally mourn U Aung Win over his shocking decease and remember his heroic struggle for the rights of the minority he belongs to, Rohingya.

Noor Muhammad, alias U Aung Win, hailing from Aung Mingalar Quarter of Sittwe has passed away on February 26, 2020 at around 9:00 p.m. in Sittwe General Hospital.

According to his neighbor Saed Muhammad, Noor Muhammad was Gulam Hussein, alias U Sein and Sokina Begum on December 10, 1953 at Maw Leik Quarter, Sittwe township.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://rohingyavision.com/rohingyas-mourn-u-aung-win-who-died-as-he-vowed/

titleFRC Calls For An Independent Review of BBC Burmese
body
https://rohingyavision.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/7-scaled.jpg

London and Frankfurt: In a press statement released on February 25, 2020, the Europe-based Free Rohingya Coalition (FRC) Calls for an independent review of BBC World Service Burmese Language Programme for fueling the Myanmar’s Rohingyaphobia. The full statement is as follows:

* * * * * * *

Date: February 25, 2020

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Free Rohingya Coalition Call for an independent review of BBC World Service Burmese Language Programme

The World Service must not be permitted to amplify, legitimize and put more fuel on the popular flame of anti-Rohingya racism

London and Frankfurt: The role of the Burmese language media and social media in condoning and disseminating racial hatred against the Rohingya in Myanmar is increasingly under the international spot light, particularly in light of the cases relating to mass atrocities at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court in The Hague (https://www.icj-cij.org/files/case-related/178/178-20200123-PRE-01-00-EN.pdf). Journalists who have reported honestly about the crimes perpetrated by the military have been imprisoned or intimidated. The independent Burmese language media is subject to the pressure and influence of the government and the military (https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-myanmar-journalists-trial-specialrepo/special-report-how-myanmar-punished-two-reporters-for-uncovering-an-atrocity-idUKKCN1LJ165). At this time, it is vital that the free press that reaches the Burmese-speaking public inside and outside the country maintain their impartiality and integrity.

The BBC Burmese service has over decades, including during the period of military rule, been a vital part of the free press, enabling the Burmese-speaking public to access information outside the influence of state censorship and propaganda. In 2013, BBC Burmese, which had operated from outside the country during military rule, opened a bureau inside the country, leaving the organisation open to the same pressure and influence from the Myanmar government as other media outlets. There are multiple and ongoing allegations from both the Burmese diaspora in the UK and those inside the country of racism (and sexism and homophobia) within the service. The allegations relate not simply to the programme outputs, but to patterns of recruitment, promotion and the contracting of anti-Rohingya journalists and staff, and/or staff that have close links with the military (for example, see attached). These Burmese journalists and staff have been able to operate with impunity from the corporation’s internal complaints system, while their more liberal-minded colleagues are side-lined.

The BBC and Ofcom complaints procedures are set up to deal with programme output, and not to deal with situations relating to potentially endemic issues of racism in a country where there are immediate risks of genocide (https://news.un.org/en/story/2019/09/1046442). The internal complaints procedures have, thus far, proved themselves to be inadequate in addressing these concerns and restoring confidence in the professional integrity of the corporation.

It is vital that in order to restore the trust of both the Burmese and British public in the BBC brand, that an independent review of the BBC Burmese service is launched, and that safeguards are put in place to ensure that potential whistle blowers working within the Burmese service are adequately protected and thus able to bring their concerns to light.

Rohingya are a protected group under international law, specifically under the Genocide Convention (See ICJ file linked above). Claims in Myanmar that they are “Bengali”, “migrants” or “foreigners” are understood, almost universally, in an international context to be both false and racist. In 2013, on BBC Radio 4’s “Beyond Belief”, then a BBC Burmese staff member, Mr Soe Win Than, made the following comments in English regarding the Rohingya and the regions in which they have been enclosed and subjected to the policies of apartheid (https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/asa16/7484/2017/en/):

Rohingya is the term that the ethnic group of people call themselves which is not accepted inside Burma. So, there are the foreigners coming to our land, taking away our land. So, there’s a conflict there.

And then, almost the contiguous townships of Rakhine, Burma, originally there were more Rakhine people – ethnic people – but now 95% of the people is Rohingyas/Bengalis there. So, the Rakhine people have the well-founded fear they will be swamped.

Complaints to the BBC against Soe Win Than, who previoisly served in the Burmese Ministry of Information under Burma’s military government, were upheld by the BBC Trust, including that he provided and “inaccurate” depiction of the population and failed to indicate that these racist views were not his own. Nonetheless, he has since been promoted to be the head of the BBC Burmese service. Since that time at least ten thousand Rohingya have been killed and three quarters of a million have fled the military-led campaigns of terror to Bangladesh.

Worryingly, the three days of preliminary hearing at the International Court of Justice in the Hague on genocide were covered by Soe Win Than and one other journalist – Mr Kyaw Zay Ya. In 2012, following the wide-spread violence in Rakhine state which predominantly targeted Rohingya and other Muslim communities, Kyaw Zay Ya (then not a BBC employee) was one of four Burmese in the UK who organised anti-Rohingya protests, including one outside the BBC in London. The event was promoted on facebook under the headline:

“Stop Lying BBC, Rohingyas are Bengali Terrorists…they are invading our country, Burma” (see screenshots 1-4)

Despite BBC Burmese service’s prior knowledge of his racist campaigns against the persecuted Rohingyas, Kyaw Zay Ya has since been recruited by the BBC Burmese Service under Mr Soe Win Than. Worse still, Kyaw Zay Ya was assigned to be the sole BBC Burmese language journalist covering the first two days of the Rohingya genocide trial in the Hague. During the first opening day of the ICJ’s public hearings in the Hague Kyaw Zay Ya chose not to present the voices of the Rohingya activists who were gathered outside the world court in support of the Gambia filing a legal challenge against Myanmar or Burma for the latter’s breach of the Genocide Convention. Despite complaints by members of the Burmese ethnic minority communities who came to offer Rohingyas their support and solidarity, Kyaw Zay Ya has not been disciplined. Instead the BBC Asia Division and Burmese Service Management have whitewashed Kyaw Zay Ya’s racist bias against the victims of genocide.

There are further complaints that have been lodged relating to a photojournalist contracted by the BBC Burmese service inside the country, who has recently posted numerous deeply racist and offensive posts about the Rohingya on facebook (see attachments). The response by the BBC to these complaints was to “speak with” the individual concerned asking him not to post such material. Most worryingly, it did not result them taking a look at their own contracting practices.

It is very important that each of these complaints be not dealt with as individual complaints relating only to BBC Burmese “outputs”. In the context of widespread hate speech, potential genocide and/or other mass atrocities in which the domestic media is understood to play a role, it is vital to consider whether patterns of racial discrimination are inherent in the Burmese service as a whole. All elements and aspects of British engagement with Myanmar are under increasing scrutiny – from business, to NGOs, to Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It is important that the BBC Burmese Service is also held up to scrutiny to ensure it adheres to the same standards of non-discrimination within the rest of the BBC.

As such the Free Rohingya Coalition call for an independent review of BBC Burmese language services including their recruitment, promotion, contracting and internal Human Resources practices.

The coalition’s Rohingya co-founder and coordinator of Media Relations Nay San Lwin says, “on behalf of my fellow refugees and survivors of the genocide in our country, I appeal to both the government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the parliamentary authorities, to investigate the BBC World Service Burmese language programme for using one of the world’s most influential media platforms to amplify, legitimize and put more fuel on the popular flame of anti-Rohingya racism in Burma and among the Burmese diaspora.”

Media Contact:

Nay San Lwin | [email protected] | +49 176 62139138

Download PDF file here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-bXfBW9vW_VwyMBnckpPAFJttpEd5JMZ/

Screenshots 1-4

Haikal Mansor’s Letter to BBC & BBC Burmese, p. 2
Haikal Mansor’s Letter to BBC & BBC Burmese, p. 2
Response from BBC World Service Asia Region Head to Kachin Activist

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://rohingyavision.com/frc-calls-for-an-independent-review-of-bbc-burmese/

\n
There are further complaints that have been lodged relating to a photojournalist contracted by the BBC Burmese service inside the country, who has recently posted numerous deeply racist and offensive posts about the Rohingya on facebook (see attachments). The response by the BBC to these complaints was to “speak with” the individual concerned asking him not to post such material. Most worryingly, it did not result them taking a look at their own contracting practices.
\n
\n
As such the Free Rohingya Coalition call for an independent review of BBC Burmese language services including their recruitment, promotion, contracting and internal Human Resources practices.
\n
The coalition’s Rohingya co-founder and coordinator of Media Relations Nay San Lwin says, “on behalf of my fellow refugees and survivors of the genocide in our country, I appeal to both the government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the parliamentary authorities, to investigate the BBC World Service Burmese language programme for using one of the world’s most influential media platforms to amplify, legitimize and put more fuel on the popular flame of anti-Rohingya racism in Burma and among the Burmese diaspora.”
\n
Media Contact:
\n
Nay San Lwin | [email protected] | +49 176 62139138
\n
Download PDF file here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-bXfBW9vW_VwyMBnckpPAFJttpEd5JMZ/
\n
Screenshots 1-4
\n\n\n\n
Haikal Mansor’s Letter to BBC & BBC Burmese, p. 2\n
Haikal Mansor’s Letter to BBC & BBC Burmese, p. 2\n\n\n\n
Response from BBC World Service Asia Region Head to Kachin Activist \n

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://rohingyavision.com/frc-calls-for-an-independent-review-of-bbc-burmese/

",

In Yangon, the Rakhines agents handed us over to an army captain. In his supervision, we were transferred to a hotel where we stayed one day (daytime only).”

“After the sunset, six of us who made additional payment were separated and within the night we were transferred to Thai-Myanmar border. After crossing the border in early morning, some Thai agents welcomed us who served us breakfast in a home before we leave for Thai-Malay border on a day-long motorbike ride.”

“We crossed the border shortly after the sunset pretending to be locals. At midnight, some local agents took us to Kuala Lumpur by car.”

“There are contracted local authorities in every station cooperating with the traffickers.”

Futuni was engaged to RJ, a Rohingya youth, in Malaysia whose family migrated to Bangladesh for long time. titleReuters: Dozens of Rohingya refugees missing, 15 confirmed dead after boat capsizes
body
https://rohingyavision.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Untitled.jpg

Dozens of Rohingya refugees were missing and 15 were confirmed dead on Tuesday after a ship carrying about 130 people capsized in the Bay of Bengal while trying to reach Malaysia, a Bangladesh coast guard official said.

Rescuers had saved 73 people from the vessel, which had set sail early on Tuesday packed with refugees trying to make their way to Malaysia from camps near the resort town of Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, said the official, Hamidul Islam.

“It was inhumane,” he said. “The boat was carrying roughly 130 people, while it had a capacity of 50.”

“The chance of finding anyone else alive is pretty slim, but we cannot give up. We are continuing search operations,” Islam said.

Some of the survivors said a second vessel carrying a similar number of passengers had also set off at the same time, Islam said. Coast guards had so far been unable to locate the second vessel.

“I wanted to go to Malaysia for a better life. I wanted to live with my husband,” said Rajuma Akhtar, one of the women who were rescued, told media on Tuesday. Akhtar said her husband had gone to Malaysia five years ago.

Two Bangladesh naval vessels and two coast guard ships were involved in joint rescue operations, near Saint Martin’s Island off the southeastern tip of Bangladesh. Those rescued include 46 women, 24 men and three children. The confirmed dead were women and children, Islam said.

In 2017, a crackdown by Myanmar’s military drove more than 730,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. Buddhist-majority Myanmar has denied U.N. accusations that its military waged a campaign against Rohingya with “genocidal intent”.

In a statement, humanitarian agency Save the Children dubbed the tragic accident on Tuesday a “wake up call”. It urged the Myanmar government to take all necessary steps to ensure the Rohingya can return to their homes in a safe and dignified manner.

In November, Bangladesh’s coast guard rescued 122 Rohingya Muslim refugees from the Bay of Bengal when a vessel they had boarded to travel to Malaysia started sinking because of a mechanical problem.

Malaysia is home to more than 100,000 Rohingya refugees, the second largest number in the world after Bangladesh.

Lured by traffickers, hundreds attempt the perilous voyage to Malaysia on overcrowded, rickety vessels during the November-to-March window, when sea conditions in the region are usually calm. Others try to make their way to Malaysia by paying people smugglers for fake travel documents.

Authorities in Bangladesh last year prevented more than 600 Rohingya, including many young girls, from making perilous sea voyages, mostly to Malaysia. Last year at least seven suspected human traffickers, including two Rohingya refugees, were killed in clashes with police in Cox’s Bazar.

“We are continuing our drive to prevent human trafficking,” said Iqbal Hossain, additional police superintendent in Cox’s Bazar.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://rohingyavision.com/reuters-dozens-of-rohingya-refugees-missing-15-confirmed-dead-after-boat-capsizes/

body
https://rohingyavision.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Untitled.jpg

For Immediate Release: 11th February 2020

Rohingya drownings an “avoidable tragedy”

The death from drowning of at least 15 people, including four children, was an avoidable tragedy that speaks to the desperation of Rohingya to live lives of dignity and safety, said the Burmese Rohingya Organization UK (BROUK) today.

At least 15 Rohingya people, including four children, died today and dozens of others are missing after their boat capsized off the coast of southern Bangladesh. According to Bangladeshi officials, the people on the boat were refugees who were trying to reach Malaysia with the aid of human traffickers.

“It is harrowing that Rohingya are so desperate to build better lives for themselves that they risk everything on dangerous journeys by sea. Our deepest sympathies go out to the victims and their families,” said Tun Khin, President of BROUK.

“Today’s drownings were an avoidable tragedy that speak to the suffering of Rohingya people. Denied citizenship and violently uprooted from their homes, many see no way out but to put their lives in the hands of traffickers to create a future for themselves and their children.”

https://rohingyavision.com/internet-services-blocked-again-in-northern-rakhine/

Close to one million Rohingya refugees live in Bangladesh, almost 800,000 of whom have fled across the border since 2017 when the Myanmar military launched a vicious “clearance operation” in Rakhine State.

In Rakhine State, Rohingya have for decades been subjected to a genocide by Myanmar’s authorities. They live under an oppressive and dehumanizing system that denies them access to citizenship, basic services, and often the ability to leave their own villages. Some 128,000 displaced Rohingya furthermore live in de facto displacement camps in squalid conditions.

Human traffickers have for decades preyed on vulnerable Rohingya people who are desperate to improve their lives in third countries. In 2015, during

The so-called Asian “boat crisis”, thousands of Rohingya were stranded at sea in overcrowded and rickety boats after regional governments cracked down on smuggling routes.

“Today’s drowning is simply one of many tragic consequences of a decadelong genocide. The only way to prevent such tragedies is to create conditions that allow Rohingya to live in peace and dignity. This must start in Myanmar, where authorities must immediately grant us citizenship and end all genocidal practices,” said Tun Khin.

https://rohingyavision.com/rohingya-madrasah-board-in-camps-graduates-1st-batch-of-250-students/

“This must also be a wake-up call on the international community to continue to push Myanmar to improve conditions for Rohingya, including by heeding the provisional measures imposed by the International Court of Justice last month.

Despite Bangladesh’s generosity in opening its borders to those fleeing since 2017, Rohingya refugees in the country continue to face restrictions, including on their freedom of movement and access to the labour market. Many Rohingya also face restrictions on access to education, although in January 2020 Bangladesh announced a pilot program where thousands of refugees would gain access to schooling with the Myanmar curriculum.

“Bangladesh has been exceptionally generous in welcoming Rohingya refugees to their country when they had nowhere else to go. It is also extremely positive that authorities are starting to loosen restrictions on refugees’ access to education, giving thousands of children a chance to improve their lives,” said Tun Khin.

https://rohingyavision.com/military-shelling-injures-another-rohingya-in-buthidaung/

“We do however also urge Bangladeshi authorities to do what they can to make refugees’ lives as bearable as possible, including by protecting them against human traffickers, and allowing them access to the labour market.”

For more information, please contact Tun Khin +44 7888714866.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://rohingyavision.com/media-release-from-burmese-rohingya-organization-uk-brouk/

titleRohingya Madrasah Board in Camps Graduates 1st Batch of 250 Students
body
https://rohingyavision.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/ww.jpg

Balukhali, COX’S BAZAR — Madrasah Education Board in the Rohingya refugee camps of Bangladesh celebrated its first convocation with 92 students from academic department receiving the traditional turbans in recognition their graduation and 160 others from tahfiz department for memorizing the Holy Quran completely.

The convocation was held in the headquarter of the board at Balukhali 1, Camp 9, Block G18 on February 7, 2020.

The newly founded education board known as “Wifaq al-Madaris al-Arabia al-Rohingiya” leads 92 madrasah (a term used to refer to private educational institution in Arakan commonly religious) located in different parts of the camps employing hundreds of teachers mostly on voluntary basis and accommodating thousands of students, according to the board director, Anisul Mustafa.

In an interview with RVision Mustafa told “In the last academic year, 120 final year students from seven madrasas participated in the examination held in four different centers, of whom 92 students fulfilled the graduation requirements. There were also 160 students who successfully memorized the Holy Quarn.” adding “There was centralized examination for five classes. In the next academic year, about 136 institutions are expected to join the board.”

The institutions under Wifaq adopted the same curriculum, methodology, rules, regulations and policies.

The curriculum adopted by these institutions is called Dars-i Nizami which originated in the Indian subcontinent in the 18th century and is used in its traditional Islamic institutions including Darul Uloom Deoband.

Dars-i Nezami offers mostly religious sciences including Quran and its Exegesis, Hadith and its Principles, Jurisprudence and its Principles, Logics, Ancient Philosophy, Morphology, Syntax, Literature, Exegesis, Theology, Prophetic Biography, Eloquence Art, etc.

It is a 12 years course and the text books are mostly in Arabic, but the medium of instruction used is Rohingya and Urdu as they follow in the footsteps of Darul Uloom Deoband, India.

Anisul Mustafa further told “We have very limited resources. Yet we are striving to educate the new generation. Without a formal education system, our children and youths in the camps are vulnerable to exploitation by drug dealers, extremist ideologists, human traffickers, etc. These educational institutions are committed not only to safeguard them but also to teach them good behaviors, educate them, give them true knowledge about their worldly life and the hereafter.”

Since 2012 Myanmar government locked all the madrasas and mosques and banned Muslim students from pursuing their studies in public institutions. The students who recently graduated in the camps are those who could not complete their studies due to government’s lockdown of their schools in 2012 and the cleansing crackdown in 2016 and beyond.

This private education system known as “madrasah” has been playing a very significant role in preserving Rohingya’s ethnic, cultural and religious identities in Arakan State amid ongoing genocide and various other restrictions, which never received any government support and instead it had always to fight the government’s hostile attitude and Islamophobia.

Posted from my blog with SteemPress : https://rohingyavision.com/rohingya-madrasah-board-in-camps-graduates-1st-batch-of-250-students/
