      "body": "![eth word cloud](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYE7G6EiGadVzPNg6N84JYgSYzxqhiSj7BUBj21ShFR9U/eth_word_cloud_3.png)\n\n從初次接觸到加密貨幣開始，我就一直覺得幣圈的人真的很會取名字，尤其是Ethereum（以太坊）團隊，像Solidity、Metropolis、Casper、Plasma，都給人一種「雖然不知道他想表達什麼，但就是覺得很屌！」的感覺。\n\n今天就帶大家看以太坊團隊至今為止用過的10個單字，順便介紹一下以太坊的歷史發展與未來計畫吧！\n\n## 1. ether 以太\n\n![ether](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZQzsZ4fwWiRMLGWCGGWqzJwQrCkhVLm5GFx5o5KDqczY/universe.jpg)\n\n第一個要介紹的單字當然就是 Ethereum （以太坊）的字源 ether（以太）。\n\n> 19世紀，科學家們逐步發現光是一種波，而生活中的波大多需要傳播介質。於是他們便假想宇宙到處都存在著一種稱之為以太的物質，是這種物質作為光的傳播中的介質。\n> \n> 雖然後來的事實證明以太確實不存在，不過以太假說仍然在我們的生活中留下了痕跡，如以太網路（Ethernet）等。\n> \n> ——摘自 [Wikipedia](https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%BB%A5%E5%A4%AA)\n\nether在物理學中是「以太」的意思，而**在以太坊之中專指在其中流通的虛擬貨幣「以太幣」**。例如：「10枚以太幣」的英文是「10 ether」或簡寫為「10 ETH」，但不會說「10 ethereum」。\n\n因為不知道讀者對以太坊了解多少，所以在此還是簡介一下：\n\nEthereum，中文翻譯為以太坊，是一個**開源的、具有[智能合約](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_contract)功能的[區塊鏈](https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%8C%BA%E5%9D%97%E9%93%BE)平台**，由程式設計師Vitalik Buterin在2013至2014年間受比特幣啟發後提出，在2014年7至9月間募集了價值1800萬美金的比特幣後開始發展。\n\n以太坊跟比特幣一樣是基於區塊鏈技術，都有**去中心化、交易極難被竄改**等特性。但以太坊跟比特幣最大的不同就在於它增加了「**智能合約**」功能。使用者可以撰寫合約程式並發佈到區塊鏈上，在鏈上的合約便無法被修改，且可以在滿足條件時被執行，執行結果也無法被竄改。所以只要合約本身沒有bug，**這些合約便相當可靠，不被任何機構操控，沒有人能毀約**。再加上有以太幣作為金流系統，因此可以做出相當多的應用，例如：投票系統、購物系統、群眾募資、交易所、預測市場、賭場，甚至發行自己的貨幣（常常跟募資一起進行）。\n\n以太坊讓區塊鏈的應用範圍更上一層樓，因此常被稱為「比特幣 2.0」或「區塊鏈 2.0」。人們對以太坊的期望也反映在價格上，在2017年12月的今天，以太幣是市值第二高的加密貨幣，僅次於比特幣。\n\n至於以太坊團隊為什麼選用 Ethereum 和 ether 來命名他們的系統和貨幣呢？Vitalik Buterin本人在2014年3月對於「[So where did the name Ethereum come from? （所以Ethereum這個名字的由來是什麼？）](https://forum.ethereum.org/discussion/655/so-where-did-the-name-ethereum-come-from)」這個提問是這樣回答的：\n\n> I was browsing a list of elements from science fiction on Wikipedia when I came across the name. I immediately realized that I liked it better than all of the other alternatives that I had seen; I suppose it was the fact that sounded nice and it had the word \"ether\", referring to the hypothetical invisible medium that permeates the universe and allows light to travel.\n\n簡單說就是，他在維基百科上瀏覽科幻元素時發現這個字，覺得聽起來不錯，而且其中含有代表宇宙中光傳播的媒介的 ether 這個字，就採用了。（總之沒什麼深奧的理由啦XD）\n\n不過以太坊之中的ether是價值的傳播媒介，跟物理學中的以太一樣都有著「傳播媒介」、「到處存在」等特性，所以命名為ether確實有道理。\n\n## 2. frontier 邊疆\n\n![frontier](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSV7qZrSLPTrzZ78b5PKBJcrqtdKB3ysEyGxswKB1jgDS/desert.jpg)\n\n> frontier\n> \n> 1. a border between two countries\n> 國家之間的界線\n> \n> 2. the western US where settlers began to move to live in the 19th century\n> 19世紀的開拓者們開始移居的美國西部\n> \n> —— 摘自 [Cambridge Dictionary](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/frontier)\n\nFrontier是2015年7月釋出的第一版以太坊程式建構起來的網路的代稱。2015年7月30日，ETH的創世區塊（genesis block）被挖出，Frontier network正式開始運行。\n\n根據2015年3月發布的[The Ethereum Launch Process](https://blog.ethereum.org/2015/03/03/ethereum-launch-process/)這篇文章中的描述\n\n> Frontier是以太坊網路的最基本的形式，含有一個挖以太幣的介面，和一個上傳、執行智能合約的方法。Frontier的主要用途是讓挖礦和以太幣交易所得以運作，好讓社群可以開始挖礦和建立起一個環境，讓人們可以測試DApp（去中心化應用）和獲得以太幣來上傳他們所寫的軟體。\n\n命名為Frontier的原因應該是想表達：這時的以太坊就像邊疆一樣，需要人們去開疆闢土（除錯、測試智能合約、開發新功能），然後建立自己的家園。\n\n雖然Frontier聽起來好像很原始，但其實這個階段就已經開發出相當多功能了，包括：在Windows、Mac、Linux、Docker、ARM都可以安裝和執行的以太坊節點的程式、基於OpenCL的GPU挖礦程式、智能合約與所用的語言Solidity、和DAO合約的程式碼。想更深入了解Frontier可以看[Ethereum Frontier Guide](https://ethereum.gitbooks.io/frontier-guide/index.html)。\n\n----\n\n以Frontier為首，以太坊的發展劃分為四個階段，分別是\n1. Frontier\n2. Homestead\n3. Metropolis\n4. Serenity\n\n以下會逐一介紹另外三個階段。\n\n## 3. homestead 家園\n\n![homestead](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXLBk3GHRXHvifLXCG5tLthrN2igaEFyANKEmPRUufTtQ/homestead.jpg)\n\n> homestead\n> \n> a house and the surrounding area of land, usually used as a farm\n> 一間房屋與其周圍的土地區域，通常作為農場使用\n> \n> —— 摘自 [Cambridge Dictionary](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/homestead)\n\n2016年3月14日，以太坊進行了硬分叉，宣告了Frontier階段的結束，進入Homestead階段。\n\n如果Frontier代表的是剛開始拓荒的不穩定狀態，那麼Homestead就代表著**穩定**，代表以太坊網路已經足夠安全，人們可以放心的在上面執行智能合約。\n\nHomestead也確實完成了他的使命。2016年到2017年，大量團隊開始在以太坊上面募資。一個標誌性事件是，在2017年6月，**在以太坊上面**透過ICO（Initial Coin Offering，首次代幣發行）合約**募資的金額達到5.5億美金，超越了同月份的天使與種子輪風險投資總額**，約3億美金（[資料來源](https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/09/initial-coin-offerings-surpass-early-stage-venture-capital-funding.html)）。\n\n總而言之，Homestead階段的Ethereum已然成為一個適合居住的家園，各種DApps可以在其周圍遍地開花。\n\n## 4. metropolis 大都會\n\n![metropolis](https://steemitimages.com/DQmNUm5p3wXqEy5Gbt9uJoPdmcuwHx3zQqaL9HEPB5zVMYb/metropolis.jpg)\n\n> metropolis\n> \n> a very large city, often the most important city in a large area or country\n> 一個非常大的城市，通常是一個國家或大型區域中最重要的城市\n> \n> —— 摘自 [Cambridge Dictionary](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/metropolis)\n\n現實中，中國的北京、美國的紐約、日本的東京，都稱得上是metropolis。\n\n2017年10月16日，以太坊順利完成代號為Byzantium（拜占庭）的硬分叉，進入Metropolis階段。\n\n在[2015年提出的計畫](https://blog.ethereum.org/2015/03/03/ethereum-launch-process/)中，Metropolis最重要的目的是「發佈一個**功能相對完整的介面——Mist——給非技術用戶**，我們預期Mist會包含一個**去中心化應用的商店**和數個**功能完整、設計精良的專案**，來展現以太坊網路的完整性能。」\n\n但從目前的發展方向看來，Metropolis中想做到的遠不止是**前端介面的改進**和開發幾個專案這麼簡單，在**提升交易速度、分散式資料儲存、隱匿交易、改良共識演算法**上，開發團隊都投注了很多心力。\n\n因此，在Metropolis階段預計還會進行一次硬分叉以將新功能融入以太坊網路。分叉的代號為Constantinople（君士坦丁堡），預計2018年會發生。\n\n總而言之，Metropolis階段的Ethereum就像一個大都會，吸引了大量人民移入尋求發展機會，各種去中心化應用在上面蓬勃發展，新的基礎設施不斷被建設以提升以太坊網路的性能。\n\n## 5. serenity 寧靜\n\n![serenity](https://steemitimages.com/DQmS1399DLP4ZAKgkEhxV3amfiYx9idZEVN2Fd7riC5zyu1/serenity.jpg)\n\n> serenity\n> \n> The state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled.\n> 鎮靜、和平、無憂無慮的狀態\n>\n> —— 摘自[Oxford Dictionary](https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/serenity)\n\nSerenity是Ethereum四階段中的最終階段。這個階段這個階段最主要的目標是：把共識演算法從Proof of Work（工作量證明，簡稱PoW）轉換為Proof of Stake（權益證明，簡稱PoS）。這麼做的好處是，新的**以太幣不再藉由挖礦產生，避免大量電力被耗費在毫無意義的運算上**。\n\n挖礦造成的能源浪費一直是比特幣、以太幣等加密貨幣為人詬病的一點。根據[digiconomist](https://digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy-consumption)的估計，現在比特幣的年度耗電量大約30兆瓦小時（TWh），以太坊則大約是10兆瓦小時（TWh），合計佔全球電力消耗的0.2%，而且這個數字還在不斷以每個月30%左右的漲幅成長。\n\n事實上，這些消耗是可以避免的，方法之一就是前述的「把共識演算法從PoW轉換為PoS」。PoW和PoS的技術細節不是一時半刻可以解釋完的，所以在此我只介紹它們的概念：\n\n採用PoW的話，人們會用電腦或專用的挖礦機器來挖幣，挖礦時機器會做大量的計算，這些計算沒有實際用處，只是用來向其他人證明「你投入了許多工作量來維護這個區塊鏈」，其他人便較常同意由你來產生區塊鏈上的新區塊、並獲得新發行的幣作為獎勵（當然上述這些都是程式在判斷的）。在這樣的規則下，**「挖礦得到幣的速度」會大致跟「挖礦機器的計算速度」成正比**。因此人們不斷研發、購買更好的挖礦機器、耗費大量電力來追求更高的收益。\n\n但仔細想想，要證明「你投入了許多工作量維護區塊鏈」需要「強大的計算能力」，因此需要「強大的挖礦機器」，因此需要「錢」來研發或購買。說穿了就是錢嘛！那大家簡單點，不要花錢買甚麼礦機了，你只要拿出與你買礦機的錢等價的虛擬貨幣，讓大家知道你有這個財力就可以了。這就是PoS的概念，**藉由持有或押注貨幣來證明你積極維護這個區塊鏈，從而獲得產生/指定新區塊和獲得獎勵的權利**。\n\n以太坊團隊目前在開發的PoS演算法稱為Casper，大致的概念是：會有**一群validators（驗證者）負責提議與投票決定下一個區塊的內容，投票的權重根據每個驗證者押注的金額決定**。詳情可參考官方的[Proof of Stake FAQ](https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/Proof-of-Stake-FAQ)。\n\n----\n\n原本以為介紹10個單字應該沒什麼，但寫下去才發現有太多東西可以介紹，導致才寫5個單字篇幅就這麼長了，所以在此先告一段落。\n\n內容有任何錯誤或你覺得解釋得不清楚的地方，歡迎留言讓我知道。\n\n這篇著重在Ethereum的四大階段，下篇預計會介紹Ethereum的5個功能與對應的單字。\n\n如果你喜歡這篇文章，歡迎小額捐款給我，讓我更有動力完成下篇！\n\nDonate BTC: 1KJWd1NqcXbX811DYp1Gi1m6vzv8bj542u\n<center>![btc_donate_1_200.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmZKwuvZqhPntA1ZnQzvu9CzdPQXGPy2NXD9xEpvkW7Dax/btc_donate_1_200.png)</center>\n\nDonate ETH or tokens: 0x10e733f07038b046a5Ab6eE7159e9912680832B9\n<center>![eth_donate_1_200.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSECa9wQieFzRT3QnUj8aPRWww9zHT6Ty8m2K1wQoiyfx/eth_donate_1_200.png)</center>\n\nDonate with Paypal: [paypal.me/rogerwu](https://www.paypal.me/rogerwu/50twd)",
