      "body": "Earlier this year the Nepali government made headlines when it announced new climbing rules that prohibited disabled climbers from attempting Mt. Everest. Those new regulations were eventually challenges in the country's Supreme Court, which eventually overturned the new laws. Now, the court has rendered its final verdict on this case, once again siding with the mountaineers.\n\nAccording to The Himalayan Times, the five-person Nepali Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee has issued a verdict vacating the revised rules once and for all, clearing the way for double amputees and blind climbers to continue their expeditions into the Himalaya. The move comes after the Nepali government attempt to circumvent the earlier ruling of the court by interesting updated provisions into its existing mountaineer regulations. But a lawyer who represents several disabled climbers petitioned the court to block the move on the grounds that the regulations were a violation of human rights.\n\nThe move has been hailed as a victory for disabled individuals from a number of camps, including former Ghurka soldier Hari Budha Magar who plans on making an attempt on Everest in 2019. If successful, he'll become the first above-the-knee double amputee to complete that climb. Blind climber Amit KC says he'll also make an attempt on the world's highest peak next year too, after coming up short in 2017.\n\nThis should bring an end to this controversy, which has been swirling around since last fall when word of these potential changes to the climbing rules in Nepal first hit the press. These regulations were criticized roundly when they were first revealed, as most believe that they did nothing to improve safety on Everest and only prevented a small number of climbers from actually making an attempt. On top of that, disabled climbers haven't actually been the ones who have been dying in the Himalaya, so it was always unclear as to who these rules were protecting.       "body": "It has been a rough year for Kilian Jornet so far. This past spring, the ultrarunner broke his leg while competing in a ski-mountaineering event in the French Alps, effetely putting him out of action for several months. But, this past weekend he returned to competition for the first time and it doesn't seem like he has missed a step while recovering from the injury.\n\nJornet took part in the tough Marathon du Mont-Blanc, competing in the full distance 26.2 mile (42 km) trail event. True to form, he won the race for the fifth time, finishing in 3 hours, 55 minutes, 54 seconds. The Spanish endurance athlete gave a small indication of his current form about 3 miles (5 km) from the finish, when he dropped the other elite athletes he had been running with and pushed on to victory alone.\n\nNo doubt Kilian was happy to put this first race behind him and get back to his competitive form. The trail was extremely hot, which definitely had an impact on the racers. Still, he was able to persevere and earn the win in his first real running race of the season.       "body": "It's no secret amongst my friends that my dream trip is an overland expedition from Alexandria, Egypt to Cape Town, South Africa – preferably in a Land Rover Defender, thank you very much. But, I have to admit I'm a little envious of the journey that two Polish adventurers recently completed as well. Self described \"car travel enthusiast\" Arkady Paweł Fiedler and his friend/cameraman Albert Wójtowicz, made the first journey across Africa and into Europe, in a 100% pure electric vehicle, which couldn't have been easy considering the infrastructure challenges that many African countries face.\n\nThe duo set out from Cape Town in a first generation Nissan Leaf equipped with a 30 kWh battery on what they call the Electric Explorer Expedition. According to the website, the vehicle was not modified in any way, and is essentially the same Nissan Leaf you would get were you to buy one a dealer and just drive it off the lot. The mere fact that such a small, electric powered vehicle, could make it all the way across Africa says a lot, although judging from the video below it wasn't exactly easy.\n\nFiedler and Wójtowicz chose a path along the western side of Africa for their journey. They set out from Cape Town and made their way across South Africa, through Namibia, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, then into Congo itself, before proceeding through Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Mauritania, and Morocco. From there, they jumped a ferry back to Europe and continued home.\n\nThe challenges they faced along the way were many. The roads weren't always paved, easy to navigate, and smooth. They often found themselves in remote areas and the infrastructure for charging an electric car isn't common throughout Africa. At times they were just praying to make it to the next settlement where they might be able pick up a small amount of charge. Frequent power outages, inefficient electrical grids, or complete lack of power altogether didn't help their cause.\n\nThe video below gives us a sense of what this journey was like. As you'll see, it wasn't an easy road trip by any sense of the word, but it does seem like it was a great adventure. The clip serves as a preview for a longer documentary about their expedition which will come later.
