      "body": "By Rockford Jefferson\n\nPHNOM PENH, Cambodia – I taught a little Jared Diamond today to my 11th graders. Diamond wrote the epic, Guns, Germs and Steel, as well as the book Collapse. He’s a great mind on why the world is so fucked up. But that’s another story. In our story here, Diamond kindly provided a map of global hominid migration starting 7 million years ago, and I found another map showing ice-age sea levels in Southeast Asia when the sea dropped hundreds of meters below today’s levels. These maps lead to this rap about people being able to walk from Cambodia to Borneo, notwithstanding all manner of now-extinct flesh-eating creatures along the way, but also the mystery of people, tens of thousands of years before evidence of boats in the Mediterranean, crossing great ocean trenches to places beyond the horizon, and settling Australia. HTF? \n\n“Teacher, can you show us a Neanderthal?” I was so happy to hear that kid say that. And thanks to my magic box, I could bring forth images of our goodly relative – and ask rhetorically, “what happened to them? How did we co-exist? Did we kill them? Eat them? Don’t make that face! We were kinda different back in the 400-thousands. Don’t be judgin’.” But now they’re saying that maybe we’re all a little bit Neanderthal.  They also say that one tribe of 55 chimps has more genetic diversity than the entire human species. I love to lay that one on the kids. \n\nYou can’t get too heavy too fast with the youngsters. And … I’m not going to talk anymore about teaching geography. Except to say that teaching geography must have really sucked before Yougle and Snapgram, and before they came out with that channel where you can spin the globe around like a mad wired drunk space captain, flying in and out and upside down, then point at any place and magically descend to earth. (What’s that one called?) \n\nTalking about the extinction of species – we should talk about that a lot, I reckon, to the extent we can – it’s useful to consider our own lineage. Then we can tell the story of the Toba supervolcano 75,000 years ago, that either did or did not bring Homo sapiens to our knees with maybe a thousand breeders left on the planet. (Our common gene pool.) Then you can get into the whole “and, and, and, think about it! If any one of your direct line of ancestors – back to algae and stuff -- had tapped out” – I used the example of the giant saber-toothed bear just missing my primal ancestor before he could scramble up the tree (and get home and get busy with your great-great-great – but I didn’t lay that on the kiddies, no sir) “… you wouldn’t be here. None of us.” I really like those kids. I hope they like me.\n\nAfter school there was a meeting, so I was pedaling back to my neighborhood, Toul Tompong, later than usual. The traffic was coming on, but it had more of an edge to it. There’s always that whole thing about being never far from getting clocked by a motorbike with three 13 year olds riding on the wrong side of the street. That is, if the Cambodian’s particular chaos doesn’t keep holding, keep working, just long enough. But that thing is there every day. You either adapt, die or abandon it somehow with money. Or really, really enjoy it. But today it had this particular edge. I don’t think it was me; I’m more aggressive lately, sure. Urban bicycling in Phnom Penh after years of it in Chiang Mai?  But the daily commute had been a wee bit weird the last couple of days. Sometimes the roads just seem more intense. It’s all closer, faster, a bit meaner. There seems to be more opportunity for misadventure. But tomorrow it’ll be different. Tomorrow is always somehow different here, in different ways. And we need to adapt. Adapt to roads that seem to be insane but are actually governed by a logic that I’m only just beginning to understand. Adapt to a technology of dotted lines, stop lights, traffic cops, zebra crossings (oh, maps and Phnom Penh! That’s another story) that’s interpreted differently around the world in subtle and extreme (PP in the House!!) ways. \n\nIf part of the goal in the first place is to adapt to difference, then no hardship. It’s just one more strange thing about this madcap place. And in all honesty, I’m a junky. I need that rush on the road, the mad sanity of the daily commute. I’d suffer without it, without the daily adrenaline rush. I’d like, physically and psychologically suffer, I reckon. Liking having to go without chili peppers for too long, or weed. \n\nBack at the fort, I’m thinking about keeping some sort of record to try to correlate the relative adrenaline rush of my 3-minute commute, with beer thirst. Is the contrast too much to take? The comedown off the rush too jarring to the system? I’m leaning against the grates of the window of my 3-story walk-up apartment (to spec: great light and airflow, balcony front and back, almost no furniture), staring out over the neighborhood in fine coolish weather – there’ll be three more days of that for the next six months – coming off an adrenaline high. That’s what it was! That’s why I wanted to roam the neighborhood and find a place to have a cold dollar draft beer. It wasn’t boredom, loneliness, more four-walls. It wasn’t the natural high of a good day spent in almost constant company of nice, interesting people. It wasn’t the pulse of a proper city just outside those window bars. It was the rush of riding a bike in madcap wonderful Phnom Penh. \n\nCool. Science. I’m glad I figured that out. \n\nAnd because I’ve been fortunate to find roost in “the Brooklyn of Phnom Penh” -- the Russian Market neighborhood -- when I go out, I meet interesting folks. And in this case, kool folks. But that’s another story. I haven’t lived any part of that story yet, but I plan to. \n\nI’m back in the VROOM VROOM, walking south on Str. 135, it’s not even dusk yet. I go past seven little shopfront pharmacies all lined up just beyond seven building-supply shops all in a row across from a little night market with 25-cent warm baguettes and just a bit shy of a 25-cent curry puff stand. I meet a Brit and an Irishman whom I know to be cool. I like these young fellows and have had with them nothing but interesting – to the extent that one can remember all of them – conversations. \n\nThe English guy is way off into permaculture, one of my loves, and he jokes about our local pub, Elly’s, being closed on Wednesday. We’re all chucked out on the street. It was funny, and true to a point, but I haven’t seen the Irishman at Elly’s much since his Northern Irish Protestant buddy got barred from the joint for brawlish behavior (self-destructive behavior, mainly, in my opinion –a bit too shrilly articulated at least once). And that’s too bad. Those were some good lads and I learned not too little from them about music and Ireland (not so much about Irish music; another cool Elly’s cat, a German-American bassist kid, schooled me on that a bit). But I’m usually gone before the real shenanigans get going, so what do I know about lads being good? And the guy with the (figurative) pick-axe handle to say what’s what in his own bar, well … I’m not the asshole to second guess that guy. I’m five different kinds of asshole, maybe. But not that one. And the guy with the axe handle is way cool. ‘Cause we in Phnom Penh. And it’s like that.",
