Kutlamalarda, yaslarda, eğlencelerde, çalışırken ve bu müzik Avrupa-Amerika geleneksel müziği ile harmanlanarak blues, ragtime ve diğer müzik formlarını yarattı.\n\nİlk ortaya çıkışından şimdiye dek, caz 19 ve 20. yüzyıl Amerikan popüler müziğinden etkilenmiştir. Caz terimi ilk batı kıyısında ortaya çıkmış ve Chigago’da 1915’lerde yapılan müziği tanımlamak için kullanılmıştır. Bu tazın önde gelenleri yandaki Scott Joplin (resmi altta), Artie Mathews ve James Scott idi.\n\nBlues\nRagtime gibi Blues‘da caz müziğin gelişimine katkıda bulunan önemli bir tarzdır. Etkileyici ve vokal geleneğine bağlı Blues parçaları 20'inci yüzyıl başındaki Afro-Amerikan insanların duygu ve hikayelerini anlatır.\n\nBlues sadece bir müzik türü değildir aynı zamanda o zamanki Afro-Amerikalıların hayat biçimidir. Düzenli tarz Big Band müziği aksine düzensiz uzun ve kombine swing tarzı melodiler ortaya koymuşlardır.\n\nDiğer akla gelen Bebop ustaları saksafoncu Sony Stitt, Dexter Gordon, gitarist Kenny Burrel, Tal Farlow, piyanist Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Thelonius Monk, basçı Charles Mingus‘tur.\n\nCool Jazz:\n1940’larda pek çok farklı tarz aynı anda ortaya çıkmıştır. Cool Jazz 40’ların sonunda Bebop ile aynı zamanda ortaya çıkar ve yıllarca popüler olarak kalacaktır. Bu tarz Bebop’tan daha yumuşak, ince, güçlüdür ve 20'inci yüzyıl bestecilerinin -Stravinsky ve Debussy gibi- harmonilerinden etkilendiği söylenebilir.\n\nBu tarzın en önemli iki ismi trompetçi Miles Davis (resmi yukarıda) ve piyanist, besteci-aranjör Gil Evans’tır. Diğer önemli müzisyenler arasında saksafoncu Garry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, trompetçi Chet Baker, gitarist Wes Montgomery, piyanist Dave Brubeck sayılabilir\n\nLatin Jazz (1930’lardan günümüze)\nLatin etkisindeki caz Latin dans ritmlerinin caz melodileri ile kombinasyonu ile karakterize edilir. Amerikan müziğine Latin ezgilerinin etkisi 30’larda başlamıştır. 50’ler ve 60’ larda bu etki tam manasıyla mambo, cha-cha, samba ve bossa-nova gibi Latin dans ezgilerinin etkisiyle güçlenmiştir. Deneysel ve kışkırtıcıdır. Yeni tınılar kullanır batı’ya ait olmayan Orta Doğu, Çin, Hindistan ya da Afrika müziklerinden. Müzisyenler bağımsız ve spontone çalarlar kimi zaman bu organize bir kaos hissi verir\n\nBu tarza öncülük eden iki önemli isim saksafoncu Ornette Colemann  ve piyanist Cecil Taylor’dır. Diğer akla gelenler piyanist Muhal Richard Abrams, Carla Bley’dir.\n\nFusion (1970’lerde günümüze)\nBu tarz Jazz-rock veya Fusion olarak adlandırılmaktadır. Caz ve Rock ritmlerinin kombinasyonu ile oluşur. Genellikle akustikten çok elektroniktir.
