If we truly care about the quality of the product, the livelihood of the farmers and the whereabouts of our coffee expenditure, we better start asking and answering some very important questions…\n\nYour morning brew. Your mid-afternoon espresso. Your slowly filtered, drip-based, Brazilian roasted Flat White. No matter how you drink it, your coffee is personal and every coffee drinker has their own take, their own favourite roast and even their own favourite coffee spot (in the worn out armchair). Even people who ‘don’t really drink coffee’ have their favourite type, after all, coffee is the most traded commodity in the world — and that’s including oil.\n\nYou see, it’s really about time we started looking into how we actually get our coffee. I mean really look. Yes, we’ve all learnt to accept that the Fair Trade badge is an environmental seal of approval but how ‘fair’ is fair trade? On the back of your average pack of supermarket ground coffee — the type you might use for french press, cafitiere or stove top — you’ll see a small green frog, depicting the Rainforest Alliance. \nBeneath the logo you’ll read, ‘We work to improve livelihoods, protect landscapes…’ etc etc which all sounds very appealing but between the cracks, there’s uncertainty. What exactly does work towards actually mean? How much of our hard-earned cash actually reaches the farmer? Why are there multiple charitable organisations?\n\nBefore we answer these questions, lets rewind. Why should we care? Why should we actually care if the coffee is fair trade in the first place? We should care because this is real livelihood. Real people. Real farmers. \n\nIf that doesn’t strike a chord, consider coffee as an industry in need of protection. The farmers control the quality and if their produce isn’t sustainable, or more specifically celebrated, the product will only decline.\n\nYou love your coffee, so start really loving your coffee and spare a thought to those who really provide us with that caffeine kick. It’s 2018 and we’re still discussing fair trade but the fact of the matter is, with the current system, it’s impossible to achieve truly fair trade.\n\nSo, back to those questions…\n\nWe can’t know how much of our coffee spend actually goes to the farmer, nobody can, not even fair trade and that’s the problem. In attempt to cure the problem, Fair Trade have only added fuel to the flame, they are essentially a middle man between farmer and consumer in the same way a processor, or roaster is. A middle-man has financial expectations, no matter their situation or purpose.\n\nThere are plenty of schemes out there trying to address this, take Vava Coffee , a truly valiant effort in bringing around honest fair trade coffee but the problem is, there still no there. They say they can offer ‘premium prices’ to the farmers, but that’s a clever marketing way of saying, we’ll offer them more than anyone else. That still won’t register as fair.\n\nSo, is there a solution? There certainly is but first I must come clean. The title of this article is slightly misleading, or more specifically, not revealing enough. Fair Trade coffee doesn’t exist because of the system and currently, there’s nobody out there who can resolve the root of the cause.\n\nIn a capitalistic industry, the farmer is shunted to the bottom and despite the efforts of reducing a middle man, by interfering with a charitable incentive — you are still acting as a middle man.\n\nSo, it’s simple, the middle man goes. Completely.\n\nHow? Look out for the Cofe Project, that’s Cofe — Coffee minus the Farmer Exploitation, a blockchain startup establishing a direct relationship between farmer and customer. \n\nIn the simplest form, you pay the farmer out of your own pocket. Artificial Intelligence has sufficed, for many people, as a dystopian threat to their way of life, a looming but inevitable horizon that engulfs us deeper year by year, as technological advancements seek to become more automated. But the truth is, its already happened and you probably didn’t even realise it. See, nothing to be scared of….\n\n

Artificial intelligence already occupies the space in which it was born. The trouble is, the majority of us envision waves of physical forms of AI, occupying labour jobs and generally causing a disturbance to our social system. But there’s the floor in the thinking. Bot’s of ever kind occupy the digital landscape, social media forums and automated environments. As I said, it’s already happened.

      "body": "I think its happening, all around us, slowly filtering into the mainstream conscious. We’ve all had enough of buying things. This has become starkly obvious to me since working in advertising, an industry that has many genuine purposes and certainly supports any prosperous economy but arguably peddles a tiring concept; we must keep buying to be happy, people are starting to realise this simply isn’t true. This certainly doesn’t mean that there’s no place for advertising because there always will be, there will always be a cause to sell, whether that commercial or social but actually a just society can be hinged effectively on advertising for good, where the customer isn’t centralised. \n \n But that’s for another day, another article. Right now i’m talking about the idea of us ending the conveyor belt of purchasing, or at least putting it on pause. The modern man (and woman) looks for more from life, worthwhile experiences, learning new languages or skills a culture incubated and born out of the recent economic pressure, insecurity and instability. All these factors of pressure have fossilised us into changed beings, we now look to feed the soul rather than line the closets. Because in the words of Skepta, whats the use of these cars and clothes, if i can’t switch it up and go hard on my own. This captures a sense of independence that is spanning throughout western ideology, freedom from purchase can only mean, freedom. \n \n And that’s the truth here, in a world that for so long seemed to be expanding, growing in accessibility, seems now to be once again shrinking back on itself, but that’s not what we want. That’s why we’ve stopped buying. The less we buy, the more we can explore, the more we can learn and the more we can achieve.",

But it’s a hollow ambition.\nMaterial consumption now caters for our ever shrinking attention span; the technology sector continuously squeezes us for the next update, to satisfy our desire to consume; but for what reason? The benefits of mainstream technology are essentially irrelevant, they’ve enhanced our ability to communicate, yes, but at the price of a controlling indsutry that homegenises conveyer-belt consumption. Has it helped us develop? Unlikely.\nDo you ever question why you continuously purchase? Perhaps this article can serve as a moment of realisation, a spark that suggests the things most important to us are hidden amongst a surface of consumption. Just begin to question whether anything you’ve purchased in the last ten years of your life has truly changed, or enchanced the most important aspects of your existence; like your happiness, well-being or self-realisation. Yes, vital information can be purchased, traded or commerced but in an ideal world, education and information should be free of charge, not utilised to fuel the economy.\nUseless consumption is dangerous and only reinforces the status-quo, meaning those without power, or money, or status, remain that way. It’s a tool of oppression. Marx once discussed that the only way a balanced society can exist, is if the means of production are controlled by those who produce, the main body of our civilisation, rather than the fat-cats, the top 1%.       "body": "There’s a chance this article could spiral horribly off topic and by the end of it, you may be wondering how anything I’m saying has any relevance whatsoever to the title, but the trail of thought and all that bollocks…\nMy thought is this, maybe we’re all searching for common things because that’s what we’re assumed to desire, or in other words, it’s what somebody else wants us to desire; or maybe not even that; it may be society has ingrained those patterns into us for so long that as man or woman, student or retiree, we must all belong to the same ‘forward’ movement, step outside of it and you’re frowned upon, cast away. Basically, if you really think about it, as a member of the Western World are your ‘searches’ or ‘desires’ any different from your neighbour, or her neighbour, or his neighbour and so on.\nIt’s difficult to put this idea into a literal sense, or a physical form, but perhaps what we’re searching for isn’t important. We’re all searching for that next promotion, or pay-rise, degree, or even title but what we’re avoiding may be all too potent for us to truly ignore. The only way this is applicable is if you ask yourself the question, what am I avoiding? Maybe I’m talking about the subconscious, I’ve never confessed to be an expert on these topics, but the things we’re avoiding must be protected by something, locked away by our minds lock and key.\nHow can you truly say you know yourself until you face what you’re avoiding? In many people’s cases, it’s the thought of being alone, or not finding true love or even a life without financial security. But what if these things aren’t important, what if by challenging these fears you achieve your true purpose.
