Videos have flooded YouTube. They usually feature the suffering of many tubers trying to finish this brutal game, and many others talk about how it was crafted, and its quality as art. Everyone is talking about it, watching videos, and some are even playing it! The game is a classic run’ n’ gun with an emphasis on boss fights. It features striking, jaw-dropping, 30s American cartoon visuals and provides quality gameplay that resolves around running, jumping, and shooting crazy fellas while in control Cuphead or his brother Mugman. While it features some classic platforming levels, most of the game is focused around crazy-hard boss battles. The game is very hard. Some of the hardest bosses needs hundreds of attempts before they can be beaten, but that's no problem, because at the same time, the game is never unfair to the player, and learning your way throughout the chaotic hazards is very satisfying, especially because of its ever-changing patterns when you retry a level. Despite being made by a company of only two brothers and going radically against the trend of both AAA industry format and the pixel art domain of indie games, Cuphead stands today as one of the best games of the year. Video games as a form of entertainment have come a long way to acquire its status of art. They has earned their place in museums and governments worldwide have already accepted them as cultural products. However, there’s still an ever-standing cloud of doubt around the concept, which leads to endless discussion around the press media, social media, and academics around how and why video games can be considered art. We players know and love video games as a medium, and beyond that, we know in our hearts that it is an art form — undisputed, no doubt. Video games made us fell courage, fear, cry, panic, happiness, made us laugh and cry. So to we players, it makes almost no sense when someone stands and says something along the lines of “Video games can’t be art because...” and even before the phrase ends, you want to stick a controller in the hand of the blasphemer. Well, the first thing you can be sure of is that, however said, its speaker never played video games at all. If video games are so compelling, it must be easy to show, right? The biggest struggle we players have, when trying to prove the status of video games as art, is proving it. Anyone, even people who doesn’t go to cinemas, can agree that cinema is art. The latest big indie game hit, it seems, has been used in an effort to put the final nail in the question of video game as art, but by very simplistic manners, Cuphead is without question a beautiful artistic object that show craft in its making that everyone can relate to, not only video game players. Its beauty and representational quality has been called to attention by many press articles, YouTube content creators, and videos featuring discussions about the achievements of the game and comments on the state of video games as art, as if proved by this game existence are everywhere. The notion seems that, if we can have Cuphead today, identical to an actual animation media, then one day we can have our so expected, unmistakable, cinema-quality video game. This is just one dimension, a very small one, of the art and expectation around video games, and we can't pay respect to Cuphead as art around the concept of beauty and representation only. Truth is, even back in the old days of Arcades, Atari, Nintendo, Master System, Super Nintendo, and Genesis, we knew that all of those sensations were coming from something way beyond graphics, something special, beyond the visual quality and beyond the quality of game play itself, beyond narrative. If video game experience is reduced to its visual quality, why do we still feel playing then, even though we have access to more sophisticated ones? And why is that pixel art indie games nowadays are big hits, together with Minecraft, even with their small tiny colorful dots that fail to represent reality? The answer is quite simple: they never really tried to. Video games experience have never been about representation, really. From the most abstract possible Atari game to the latest major AAA release, there’s one thing ties in the experience and gives meaning to the act of playing with video games, a concept that goes beyond the visual, the game play and narrative. In truth, it’s a concept that incorporates all these elements: video game play is play with images, the video game image is composed by many elements. We will find its full composition in elements like game play, control, sound effects, music, narrative and... *drums*... challenge. In all media formats and art forms, we have access to images so we can have aesthetic experiences, but only through video games we can play with them.It’s true that many videogames, specially western ones, struggled to achieve semblance to reality, and one could argue that it means image quality. However the concept of image we are using does not mean the same thing as visuals. It’s a broader meaning that can help us understand videogame experience a bit better. The concept of image is one that is born together with phenomenology, a European philosophical movement that goes against, among many other thing, the idea of art as representation, in truth, it is a kind of reality in itself. According to phenomenology, when we talk about art and image, we are talking about how art can provoke our perceptions to produce certain sensations that goes beyond the minimal concept of art as visual beauty and representation. Now that we have the concept of image in our favor, how does that apply to video games? We can say that the visual of a video game is only a fraction of it’s image. Each media and art form has their own army of images to affect its audience and create meaning and sensations. One kind of image that we will only find in video games, and that is a fundamental element to most of then, especially Cuphead, is one that I call the challenging image. The challenging image is one that must be intellectually beaten or it will kill you, but at the same time, it gives enough information on how to be beaten. So, how can the notion of challenge as image help us understand a bit better the quality of Cuphead, and video game as art, beyond its visuals? It matters that Cuphead is using 30s classic animation and is, at the same time, a challenging game. One could imagine that such a stunning game would stick to an easier note so one could appreciate its visuals seamlessly. However, challenge in this case can have interesting results. First of all, when we watch cartoons, especially older ones, we can see one episode after another, and still grasp their meaning. Not to say it’s passive, but it’s an easier medium to consume than, let’s say, a Stanley Kubrick movie. They provide real challenge, each level may be presented as an episode, but while you are mesmerized by the graphic quality of the world and the beauty of its animations, its inhabitants wants to kill you. The episode can’t go on unless the player incorporates the animations as thought into their game strategy. Thus, this tension generates sensations that wouldn't be possible outside the realm of the video game. Another highlight is how the game resolves around the unpredictability of its characters, while trying to survive the pure chaos that are the enemies. The player must “learn” how the animation works so he can proceed with the game. After the tenth attempt against a boss, the player will find himself constantly looking for hints of his behavior on his set of animations while trying to beat him. It's well know that the production of animations are a hard and patient process, but never before would one stare so patiently at its fluidity in order to achieve success, trying to think together with the animations frames so we don't get beaten by them. Video games provide us with worlds composed of images that wants us dead, but at the same time, teach us how to overcome their own challenge. The challenge of Cuphead is an important element that defines how we perceive the game image and open new ways that we can approach animations as objects. Cuphead provides sensations that are way beyond the reach of classic television media. Never before have 30s cartoon animations seemed so fun, so diverse, so alive, so daring, or so murderous. Isn't providing new ways to perceiving things one of the qualities of the work of art? Cuphead is indeed a great example of the artistic potential of video game as an art form. However, we need to focus on what makes it different from any other media, and the importance of its identifications as a video game. The challenge of Cuphead and its quality as video game art could be understood on how it re-contextualizes the image of classic cartoons inside the realm of gaming. Cuphead is an artistic object that enables players to become a master of both the video game mechanics and overcome crazy, dangerous, intelligent cartoon animations.  It doesn't matter that the challenge it provides makes the game a bit more inaccessible, or if the usual critique or player can't play it, as an impediment to its status as art. What matters is that its developers wanted it to be challenging, and that is surely not incidental. Thus, the challenge aspect is not detrimental. It’s fundamental to the understanding of Cuphead as art and how we should frame the understatement of its animations. In the world of Cuphead, we don’t just appreciate cartoon images, we barely survive them, and that's an awesome kind of experience only video games can offer.

Everyone is talking about it, watching videos, and some are even playing it!\n\nThe game is a classic run’ n’ gun with an emphasis on boss fights. It features striking, jaw-dropping, 30s American cartoon visuals and provides quality gameplay that resolves around running, jumping, and shooting crazy fellas while in control Cuphead or his brother Mugman. While it features some classic platforming levels, most of the game is focused around crazy-hard boss battles. The game is very hard. Some of the hardest bosses needs hundreds of attempts before they can be beaten, but that's no problem, because at the same time, the game is never unfair to the player, and learning your way throughout the chaotic hazards is very satisfying, especially because of its ever-changing patterns when you retry a level.\n\nDespite being made by a company of only two brothers and going radically against the trend of both AAA industry format and the pixel art domain of indie games, Cuphead stands today as one of the best games of the year. Game press and content creators have even had even been calling it the ultimate proof that video games can be art. But what does it mean to call Cuphead, or video games, art, exactly?\n\nVideo games as a form of entertainment have come a long way to acquire its status of art. They has earned their place in museums and governments worldwide have already accepted them as cultural products. However, there’s still an ever-standing cloud of doubt around the concept, which leads to endless discussion around the press media, social media, and academics around how and why video games can be considered art.\n\nWe players know and love video games as a medium, and beyond that, we know in our hearts that it is an art form — undisputed, no doubt. Video games made us fell courage, fear, cry, panic, happiness, made us laugh and cry. So to we players, it makes almost no sense when someone stands and says something along the lines of “Video games can’t be art because...” and even before the phrase ends, you want to stick a controller in the hand of the blasphemer.\n\nWell, the first thing you can be sure of is that, however said, its speaker never played video games at all. If video games are so compelling, it must be easy to show, right? The biggest struggle we players have, when trying to prove the status of video games as art, is proving it. Anyone, even people who doesn’t go to cinemas, can agree that cinema is art. Blade Runner 2049 is beautiful; you just need to see a small video scene to get the idea. You certainly won’t achieve desired results if you show a video of Chrono Trigger or Undertale, though. If you show something more modern, like TheLast Of Us, the person may say “wow, it’s almost real, almost there!” and that’s it. These are moments that marked many of us forever, made us shiver and feel a range of sensations and emotions.\n\nThe critique then, after sipping his cup of tea and tipping his fedora, would respond, “Outrageous! The only problem is that it’s very challenging, and the art critique can't play it. Cuphead almost saved us all — almost. The usual critique can’t play it. \"Only if it was easier. I wish it were more accessible. It could be art!\" he shouts.\n\nCalm down, not so fast. The latest big indie game hit, it seems, has been used in an effort to put the final nail in the question of video game as art, but by very simplistic manners, Cuphead is without question a beautiful artistic object that show craft in its making that everyone can relate to, not only video game players. Its beauty and representational quality has been called to attention by many press articles, YouTube content creators, and videos featuring discussions about the achievements of the game and comments on the state of video games as art, as if proved by this game existence are everywhere. Many of these times there’s complaint about the hard difficulty, as if it’s a separated quality that is getting in the way of appreciating it as art.\n\nHowever, I call attention to the fact that to understand Cuphead as an artistic object, and the role of video games as both media an art, we must take its challenging quality in account, or we will run the risk of diminishing both it's artistic and aesthetic values. While it is true that art can be beautiful, when we reduce the understanding of the expression of a form of art or a media — in this case, the video game — to simple beauty and representation terms, we are reducing the comprehension of its artistic potentiality and quality. Video game players sure do like beautiful graphics and great technical achievements. The game shows how far video game technology has come, enabling high quality animation to run at 24 fps, seamlessly, no different than the media it is aspiring from. Cuphead is almost as if the dream of video games as representation has come finally true. The notion seems that, if we can have Cuphead today, identical to an actual animation media, then one day we can have our so expected, unmistakable, cinema-quality video game. This is just one dimension, a very small one, of the art and expectation around video games, and we can't pay respect to Cuphead as art around the concept of beauty and representation only.\n\nTruth is, even back in the old days of Arcades, Atari, Nintendo, Master System, Super Nintendo, and Genesis, we knew that all of those sensations were coming from something way beyond graphics, something special, beyond the visual quality and beyond the quality of game play itself, beyond narrative. If video game experience is reduced to its visual quality, why do we still feel playing then, even though we have access to more sophisticated ones? And why is that pixel art indie games nowadays are big hits, together with Minecraft, even with their small tiny colorful dots that fail to represent reality? The answer is quite simple: they never really tried to.\n\nVideo games experience have never been about representation, really. From the most abstract possible Atari game to the latest major AAA release, there’s one thing ties in the experience and gives meaning to the act of playing with video games, a concept that goes beyond the visual, the game play and narrative. In truth, it’s a concept that incorporates all these elements: video game play is play with images, the video game image is composed by many elements. We will find its full composition in elements like game play, control, sound effects, music, narrative and... *drums*... challenge. \n\nIn all media formats and art forms, we have access to images so we can have aesthetic experiences, but only through video games we can play with them.It’s true that many videogames, specially western ones, struggled to achieve semblance to reality, and one could argue that it means image quality. However the concept of image we are using does not mean the same thing as visuals. It’s a broader meaning that can help us understand videogame experience a bit better. The concept of image is one that is born together with phenomenology, a European philosophical movement that goes against, among many other thing, the idea of art as representation,  in truth, it is a kind of reality in itself. According to phenomenology, when we talk about art and image, we are talking about how art can provoke our perceptions to produce certain sensations that goes beyond the minimal concept of art as visual beauty and representation.\n\nNow that we have the concept of image in our favor, how does that apply to video games? We can say that the visual of a video game is only a fraction of it’s image. Each media and art form has their own army of images to affect its audience and create meaning and sensations. One kind of image that we will only find in video games, and that is a fundamental element to most of then, especially Cuphead, is one that I call the challenging image. The challenging image is one that must be intellectually beaten or it will kill you, but at the same time, it gives enough information on how to be beaten. Not to say it’s passive, but it’s an easier medium to consume than, let’s say, a Stanley Kubrick movie.
