Unite my heart to live in awe of Your name\" (Psalms 86:11).\n\nYou know how you feel when you're on vacation—free, joyful, adventurous, rested, and wholly alive. That's how you're supposed to live every day. But for most, the moment you get back to \"reality,\" you feel shattered again. There was a time I felt so broken, it would take nearly an entire vacation to feel some sense of wholeness—just in time to return to face the circumstances that were breaking me in the first place. \n\nAny time you’re rejected, betrayed, wounded, discouraged, or embittered, it can break you apart. You protect the pieces as best you can, putting up walls around each fragment. But that means stagnation, and living less than your true self. Instead of blessing your life and everyone in it, you become guarded, distrustful, even paranoid. You bury the true you trying to keep anyone from stealing what's left. \n\nTake a moment and assess your own state of union—within yourself, and with God. In Psalm 86, David asks God to \"unite his heart,\" to restore the pieces of himself and become so healed and whole, he can see God's truth and feel His presence again. Choose to believe you can be whole again, and give God every part of yourself. He can heal any broken heart, but He needs all the pieces.\n\nPut your hope in Jesus over and over until it's no longer a wish, but a mindset. Thank and praise Him until your perspective shifts, and you can see everything and everyone with the love, joy, and peace He does. Allow yourself to be passionate again—instead of becoming exhausted trying to protect yourself from life, allow yourself to feel and experience and adventure. Be who you really are. It reminds me that no matter how much commercialization there may be, Christmas is a celebration of vulnerability. \n\nThis vulnerability is a unique combination of thought and emotion that touches us in so many ways—driving down a street of brightly decorated homes, sitting quietly by a fire, taking in the joy on a child's face. Heartache, disappointment, and fear have taught us to guard our hearts. But in these extraordinary moments, we trust enough to expose our hearts to the majestic love of God. In His presence, we’re able to see the purpose of the greatest gift ever given: to save us, Jesus became us.\n\nI can think of nothing more vulnerable than a baby born in a cave, surrounded by animals and poor shepherds. There He lay, infinite power surrendered to infinite love. The manger is an invitation to become vulnerable to that love, which doesn't only contain His birth, but His life, death, and resurrection. \n\nTo receive the gift of Jesus means living with your heart open, trusting Him to transform it—not just at Christmas, but every day. If you aren’t intentional about cultivating joy and peace in your own heart and mind, life can get challenging when joy is reduced to selfish commercialism, and peace is buried under negativity and frustration. \n\nJesus said \"Unless you repent—change how you think—and are transformed to become like a child, you have no part in the kingdom of God” (Matt. 18:3).\n\nWhy a child ? Because a healthy child lives in wonder. They see joy, peace, love, and magic in the most normal day. And at Christmas, there’s something even deeper and more powerful. God's presence is always with you, but when millions are singing in stores, \"His law is love, and His gospel is peace,\" “Joy to the world, the Savior reigns,\" and, \"O come let us adore Him,\" the barriers between the natural and supernatural become thin as wrapping paper. \n\nWhen I was young, our family would have great Christmas eve parties, with amazing friends who are still amazing friends. Those nights of fantastic food and fun are some of my favorite memories. Part of our tradition was to all gather around an old nativity set at the end of the night, and put the figurine of Jesus into the manger, completing the scene. \n\nFor many years, after everyone had gone home and my family was in bed, I would go quietly downstairs, turn the Christmas tree lights on, and sit by the manger. I remember being six years old and knowing Santa wasn't real (Santa and my mother had the same handwriting). But I knew God. Even that young, I would think about why He came to earth this way, and He helped me to understand the magic of it. I thanked Him for everyone and everything in my life, and for how kind and loving He was to me. I listened to Him speak to my heart of so many powerful possibilities, some of which I'm just now starting to see. The awe I experienced always made me cry. It still does. \n\nThat sense of wonder has stayed with me. Much of my life I've been susceptible to being sucked into self–pity, but wonder has helped me get past cynicism, negativity, and pain, to see what’s real, and what’s possible. Many people have told me they were encouraged by how I dealt with cancer. Anything good that came out of that part of my journey was an overflow of the awe and joy of being in His presence. It came from knowing God was far greater than anything I was facing. It came from that little boy sitting by the manger in the light of the Christmas tree.  \n\nI know this week is crazy busy, but take the time to nurture wonder. In that place, let Jesus awaken the joy of a child in your heart, and establish His complete peace in your mind, so much they overflow to everyone in your life. Or fear of loss, getting hurt, or there not being enough. You just can't find a verse that says, \"The fear of the future is the beginning of wisdom.\"\n\nThe fear of God is the deepest sense of awe, keeping your heart childlike enough to recognize and respond to the power, majesty, wonder, and glory of God. It’s living your life in full light of the revelation that God really is love. \n\nI know the fear that isn’t God’s. And I know there are people all over the world who have given themselves over to fear, wasting their lives trying to control others with it, and using it to destroy anyone they can’t. If I let myself focus on those fears for any length of time, they take over my thoughts and emotions. I stop seeing God as all–powerful, and so stop seeing myself as powerful in His presence. I pray out of desperation at Him, instead of in delight of Him. \n\nThat fear will tell you to hide who you are,  protect yourself from trusting anyone, judge anything different from you, and that it’s always too dangerous to move forward. But in the awe of God’s presence you’re empowered to occupy new territory in His love, hope, grace, joy, peace, kindness, and wisdom, transforming cities and nations instead of condemning and abandoning them. To judge anyone out of your fear is to make that fear your god. That's the great irony—in fearing evil, you become part of it. \n\nFind some time alone with God today. But with each one, you’ve been learning more and more about living from the tree of life, rather than the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Consuming from the tree of knowledge means determining the value of everything and everyone you encounter on your own, relying only on your intellect, experience, and judgments. \n\nEating from the tree of life means living intentionally from God's presence. It's responding to your circumstances in awareness of His Spirit, looking to Him for truth and meaning in your experiences, and grace and growth in your relationships. \n\nWhen you have a bad moment, or a bad day, it’s so important to know that’s okay. You’re okay. A negative experience needs to be acknowledged and dealt with, but it doesn’t get to take over your mindset and damage your physical, mental, and spiritual health for days, weeks, months, or even longer. \n\nNo matter what’s happened, with all the intentionality your heart still has, focus on listening for God's view of your circumstances, and how He sees you. That’s where you’ll find your tree of life today.
