| title | Starting your Watch Collection |
| body | If you're a fan of wrist watches, horology and things mechanical attached to your upper limbs, then you're living in interesting times. There is literally a plethora of watches available, at almost every price point, for every budget and I have discovered that you can build a very interesting collection of great, fun, and cool watches on a very limited budget. Micro-brands ensure that you can own something almost unique at a very cost effective price point, and a quick delve into vintage watches allows you to own something with some horological history without breaking the bank. Here are my personal "Top 10" tips that I've learned over the last few months, for getting yourself something interesting, without having to go cap in hand to your accountant and getting a mortgage for that beautiful time piece you've set your heart on. 1) Get a rough idea of what you're looking for, but don't set your heart on a specific model by a specific manufacturer. If you want a very cool chronograph, then have a look at the market for what's available at the price point you're looking at. Setting your sights on the XYZ "Multigraph 5000X" is seriously going to limit your options and you might find something similar, equally suitable, and at a comparatively bargain price, with equal class and cachet. 2) Take your time. You've survived your entire life without that particular watch. A few more days/weeks won't hurt - and if you spend some time researching (Re-Searching) and refining you may well find your patience pays off manyfold. 3) Bookmarks are your friend. We are blessed with a lot of microbrands, alongside luxury watches from well known brands and a mix in between. Often, lesser known brands use the same movements that much better established brands use too - so effectively you can get a watch with the same engine as the really expensive one you're looking for - but you need to know what's what and your bookmarks are invaluable. Being able to organise your interests for later compare and contrast exercises pays dividends. 4) Always check the prices. This is perhaps really obvious, but it's worth pointing out for more than one reason. Watches in particular, seem to be very heavily discounted compared to the manufacturer's price list. If you pay book price, you're almost certainly overspending on that model by a good 20% or more. Look around. Find out the model and number and search. Then search again. Bargain hunt. Then decide what you're prepared to spend and knock 20% off of that and see what's available at the new price point. you'll be amazed at what you can get. 5) Check the second hand watch market. (There's almost certainly a bad pun there... ) Seriously. There's a wealth of stuff out there that's really interesting and eyecatching for a lot less than new. Antique fairs are a great real world source as are specialist watch fairs. Also there are many auction sites online and other places so worth checking them out. 6) Designer Watches: NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! Seriously, just don't. They might look pretty (beauty is in the eye of the beholder I suppose) but you're paying for a cheap lump of shite with a name on it. It will almost certainly have no horological value, and by and large they look, feel and perform cheaply. Plus their longevity is seriously suspect. Designer watches typically sport cheap Chinese movements and plenty of bling. I see someone with a Michael Kors watch, it tells me a LOT about them and their taste, and not in a good way. Can you say "gullible"? 7) Fakes/Replicas: Just don't do it. You could buy a fake Rolex - but honestly with that money you could get something unique, that makes a statement about you, for much less money and much more class. It's not big, it's not clever, and like above - it says a lot about you as a person. Again, not positively. If you buy a fake, you're too cheap and too sheep! Be your own person. 8) Search Engines! Once you've got a feel for where you want to go, search on the make, model, calibre, movement, strap, size, everything. Then do it again. Sure, you'll find what you searched for very quickly on the first try, but it's always helpful to see where the object of your desire exists in the ecology you're interested in. You'll almost certainly also find some very interesting objects come to the fore that pique your interest and bring you a lot of fun. 9) Money isn't everything. You can buy something really interesting, fun and worthwhile for a lot less than you expect/want/need. You might have your heart set on a JLC, but how about that really interesting Undone that you can specify yourself for a fraction of the price? With watches, it's not always about getting what you pay for. You can tell the time just as easily on a Swatch as a Rolex (within seconds at least) and you can have as much fun with either. But the money you save on the Swartch can go to buying many more watches giving you a very interesting, fun, and joyful collection. 10) Have fun. You don't have to spend a fortune to accumulate a really enjoyable watch collection and you need not do it all in one go. For me, part of the fun is deciding what to choose, where to aim next, the search, and then the aquisition. It's not simply walking ito a jewelers and making a purchase. It's a greatly enjoyable process that reaps dividends. I guess much of this advice is obvious, and a huge amount can be applied to almost any purchase you make, and with whatever currency you have, but the prinicples are sound and if you're happy to take your time and a measured approach you can come up a winner and get real enjoyment from it at the same time and that, to me at least, is what a hobby should be about. I haven't mentioned trading here, flipping watches out, or buying to sell on etc because that's something I'm less interested in. I'm really here talking about collecting watches, but there's no reason why you can't apply the principles here to that process. Have a lot of fun! I should suffix this by saying this is my own experience, yours may vary, and as always, caveat emptor. |

With watches, it's not always about getting what you pay for. You can tell the time just as easily on a Swatch as a Rolex (within seconds at least) and you can have as much fun with either. But the money you save on the Swartch can go to buying many more watches giving you a very interesting, fun, and joyful collection. \n\n10) Have fun. \n\nI guess much of this advice is obvious, and a huge amount can be applied to almost any purchase you make, and with whatever currency you have, but the prinicples are sound and if you're happy to take your time and a measured approach you can come up a winner and get real enjoyment from it at the same time and that, to me at least, is what a hobby should be about. I haven't mentioned trading here, flipping watches out, or buying to sell on etc because that's something I'm less interested in. I'm really here talking about collecting watches, but there's no reason why you can't apply the principles here to that process. \n\nHave a lot of fun! \n\nI should suffix this by saying this is my own experience, yours may vary, and as always, caveat emptor.",

| body | you're making a comparison with different levels of offence I think here. Chandimal's appeal seems to be based on the fact that the ICC cannot determine what he actually did, but also on the fact that his action was not pre-meditated. The case against the Australians is clear; three players colluded to deliberately set out to cheat, before play, and used sandpaper to alter the condition of the ball. Whilst I'm not privy to the musings of the ICC or individual boards, it seems that the ICC have banned Chandimal, but it was Cricket Australia who banned Warner, Smith and Bancroft for the year. There's a very good piece here on ESPNCricinfo which deals with it in pretty comprehensive terms. I do see where you're coming from but I think the issue of pre-meditation is critical here. |

Buttler did a masterful job of getting over the line for England but if there'd been another 20 or 30 runs on the board to chase... Still, it shows this England team are now a genuine force to contend with and that's without two of their best players in Stokes and Woakes. All in all, a good day for English sport with England scoring 6-1 against Panama and 5-0 against Australia |

| body | England have just given the Australians a 4-0 drubbing with one match to play. The strength in depth of England is phenomenal at the moment. If any other two all-rounders were injured they'd honestly struggle to get back in the side but I think Willey at the very least must be looking over his shoulder at Stokes' well-being |

| body | I'd definitely agree with you there on both counts. As an occasional spectacle, sure, but the game seems to be becoming increasingly lop-sided and I think some effort needs to be made to restore some parity between bat and ball. Another perfect example of this is the Womens Tri-Series taking place in England currently. First the NZ Women beat the world T20 high score and then the very same day England's women did it again, scoring 250 in a Twenty Over game, a run rate of over 2 runs per ball. I've no problem wiht England drubbing the Aussies at all, in fact I rather enjoy it but I do want to see a contest. I should also point out that the Aussies must take a lot of credit because they didn't give up during the game. They kept trying to the last and that's to their credit. They didn't lose the game they were resoundingly beaten. |

| body | As a one off, yes, I do think it was an entertaining game of cricket especially as an Englishman - take every we chance we can to destroy the Australian's because you never know when the next opportunity will arise. However, you wouldn't want to see that every game as it's the competition in any sport that actually makes it interesting. What I would say is that the English spinners did turn the ball in the 2nd innings of the match. Had the Australian's had a slow bowler who could have done the same then maybe they would gotten themselves back in the game and restricted England to a more manageable total |

| title | Cricket: Australia lose by an Innings - in an ODI |
| body | Highlights courtesy of the ECB here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rzlfG6Xkg0&t=6s So this was a thing. It was a spectacle for sure. The Australian Captain, Tim Paine, won the toss and decided to bowl. That was the one thing he won yesterday. Bairstow, Roy and Hales along with Eoin Morgan (who during the game became England's highest run-scorer in ODIs, overtaking Ian Bell) simply demolished the Australian bowling attack. Beating, correction, demolishing, the previous record (also held by England - achieved at Trent Bridge, which is probably no coincidence) of 444-3 against Pakistan in 2016, England posted a massive total of 481-6. Captain Morgan scored the fasted half-century in an England shirt. That in itself is not the whole story. It seemed entirely conceivable around the 30 over mark that a score of 500+ was on the cards. Yes, read that again. 500 runs in an ODI. As it was... 481 were scored after Australia won the last four overs of the England innings and a clatter of wickets slowed progress. 481 runs. Think about that for a moment. It's not often that kind of score is posted in the first innings of a test match. Very often 481 runs is a reasonable total for both innings of a test match. England scored that in an afternoon of an ODI. 481. I'll just leave that there for you to contemplate for a moment. Unsurprisingly, Australia were not up for the chase, but credit to them. They continued to stay in the game - they did not slump, let heads go down, shoulders droop, give up on the fielding etc all game. They fought back with guts and bravery but they were not just resoundingly beaten, they were, ultimately, thrashed. This was a match of records. 481 runs is the highest total posted in an ODI in men's cricket. (I believe the Kiwi women have posted higher) Australia posted 239 in response losing by 242 runs. Australia score fewer runs than the margin of defeat. Records galore. England's highest margin of victory, Australia's greatest defeat, highest score, etc etc. But all of this begs one question: Was it good cricket? There were boundaries galore, over 60 in England's innings alone. But the ball did nothing. The bowlers, in the first 46 overs at least, were there simply to deliver the ball to be hit, and so it was. Commentators of all stripes noted that the ball failed to move through the air, it failed to seam off the pitch and spin was only achievable by politicians and washing machines. Was it good cricket? Does it benefit the game? For the batsmen who scored so many records, it was an astounding achievement. But for the overall well-being of the game there is significant concern. Whilst a plethora of boundaries is pleasing on occasion, there's a compelling argument that they should remain special and continue to be significant and while a couple of fours or a four and a six is posted most overs, that devalues the currency of the boundary rope. Most spectators also want to see a contest between bat and ball, batsman vs bowler, with an equal chance of the bowler's victory. If this match is turned on its head for a moment and the balance shifted the other way, it does not take a leap of faith to imagine a team being skittled for 60 runs at the very same venue. Stuart Broad's 8 for 15 was great spectacle precisely because it was not the norm. It was a freak and remains some of the most astounding figures to be seen in modern cricket but it would be little fun for the spectator to watch that every game. Balance should be the watchword here. Bowlers should always feel they are in with a chance. Pitches should never favour one over the other in an ideal world. Why would a young kid, keen to get into cricket, ever want to pick up a ball knowing he will become fodder for the kid with the plank of wood in his hand? Continuing to see games like this risks sapping skill and enjoyment from the game and will do long term damage to it. Megalithic scores don't need to make games exciting. Anyone remember Australia vs South Africa in 1999? Hardly a thrashing but a thriller almost every ball. Let's try and keep this game in some kind of perspective. |

| title | Cricket: England vs Scotland & Australia |
| body | Scotland the Brave! Scotland pulled off a stunner to win vs England. Against most other teams, you'd think that would be a shocker but England do have a habit of "misunderestimating"* minnows on the international stage, as Holland, Ireland, Zimbabwe and many others can testify to. But, we should not take this result away from Scotland. They played brilliantly and deserved this victory and England have to hold their hands up and admit mistakes were made. (Looking at you, Alex Hales, for the run out of Joe Root!) England didn't bowl well. That's not to take anything away from Calum MacLeod (there can be only one) and his 140, and a couple of good fifties from Coezter and Munsey but England were not on top of their game with the ball. They didn't always field well, allowing runs where they should not have been, and a couple of dropped catches, plus boundaries that were unnecessary. What was unforgivable was their batting. They have chased bigger totals and for large parts of this chase looked in control but stupid errors and a lack of bottle (Eoin Morgan - he might have form in that area, despite his captaincy skilz) consigned England to defeat. There are some odd selections in this England side. Billings in place of Buttler strikes me as a very poor choice, and Willey in place of Woakes actually highlights the strength of the latter. England didn't get to field their number one team, and whilst I'm personally not a fan of Stokes I do accept he's way above Woakes with the bat - though the ball is a different question.) But rest-assured that England are far from cooked, and I expect them to treat this defeat by Scotland as a deserved "wake up" call and I absolutely expect them to win decisively against Australia tomorrow. There will be more pressure on Morgan and England than on Paine and Australia, but the "emotional spotlight" will fall squarely on the Aussies. They now have to prove they can play cricket in the right "spirit" - something they've failed to do for some years now. They have to show they play to the highest sporting standards, on the world stage, while playing at their best and even when under pressure. That might give them an edge - if they play well and lose in a tight game they may be able to reclaim a modicum of the moral high ground but if they lose and/or show some of their recent truculent petulance, they will find things very difficult indeed, not just on the day but moving forward. Expect: Sandpaper, lots of it and a big Australian loss as the England fans add two extra players to the emotional field. Don't expect: Australian humility, many England team changes Prediction: England will try and chase and win by a good margin with plenty of Beery supporters willing them on. *yes, I made it up. I'm trying to learn American. |
