      "body": "Only 3 percent of the water\non our planet is fresh.\nhttps://i.ytimg.com/vi/YrddaP6ml1M/maxresdefault.jpg\n\nYet these precious waters\nare rich with surprise.\n\nAll life on land is ultimately\ndependent upon fresh water.\n\nThe mysterious tepuis of Venezuela -\n\nisolated mountain plateaus\nrising high above the jungle.\n\nThis was the inspiration\nfor Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Lost World,'\n\nan imagined prehistoric land.\n\nHere, strange towers of sandstone\nhave been sculptured over the millennia\n\nby battering wind and torrential rain.\n\nMoisture rising as water vapor\nfrom the surface of the sea\n\nis blown inland by wind.\n\nOn reaching mountains,\nthe moisture is forced upwards\n\nand as it cools, it condenses\ninto cloud and finally rain -\n\nthe source of all fresh water.\n\nThere is a tropical downpour here\nalmost every day of the year.\n\nFresh water's journey starts here,\nhigh in the mountains.\n\nGrowing from humble streams\nto mighty rivers\n\nit will travel hundreds\nof miles to the sea.\n\nAngel Falls,\nthe highest waterfall in the world.\n\nIts waters drop unbroken\nfor almost a thousand meters.\n\nSuch is the height of these falls\n\nthat long before the water reaches\nthe base in the Devil's Canyon\n\nit's blown away as a fine mist.\n\nIn their upper reaches,\n\nmountain streams are full of energy.\n\nStreams join to form rivers,\n\nbuilding in power,\n\ncreating rapids.\n\nThe water here is cold.\n\nLow in nutrients, but high in oxygen.\n\nThe few creatures\nthat live in the torrent\n\nhave to hang on for dear life.\n\nInvertebrates dominate\nthese upper reaches.\n\nThe hellgrammite, its body flattened\nto reduce drag,\n\nhas bushy gills to extract\noxygen from the current.\n\nBlack fly larvae anchor themselves\nwith the ring of hooks,\n\nbut if these become unstuck,\n\nthey're still held\nby a silicon safety line.\n\nThere are advantages to life in the fast stream -\n\nbamboo shrimps can just sit\nand sift out passing particles\n\nwith their fan-like forearms.\n\nUsually, these mountain streams\nonly provide enough food\n\nfor small animals to survive.\n\nBut with the spring melt here in Japan\n\nmonsters stir in their dens.\n\nGiant salamanders, world's largest amphibian,\n\nalmost two meters long.\n\nThey're the only large predator\nin these icy waters.\n\nThey begin their hunt\nat night.\n\nThese salamanders have\nan exceptionally slow metabolism.\n\nLiving up to 80 years\nthey grow into giants.\n\nThe fish they hunt are scarce\n\nand salamanders have poor eyesight.\n\nBut sensory nodes\non their head and body\n\ndetect the slightest changes\nin water pressure.\n\nFree from competition,\n\nthese giants can dine alone.\n\nPickings are usually thin\nfor the salamanders,\n\nbut every year some\nof the world's high rivers\n\nare crowded by millions of visitors.\n\nThe salmon have arrived.\n\nThis is the world's largest\nfresh water fish migration.\n\nAcross the northern hemisphere\n\nsalmon, returning from the ocean\nto their spawning grounds,\n\nbattle their way\nfor hundreds of miles upstream.\n\nUp here, there are fewer predators\nto eat their eggs and fry.\n\nA grizzly bear.\n\nFrom famine to feast -\n\nhe's spoilt for choice.\n\nThis Canadian bear is very special -\n\nhe's learnt to dive for his dinner.\n\nBut catching salmon in deep water\nis not that easy\n\nand the cubs have lots to learn.\n\nThe annual arrival\nof spawning salmon\n\nbrings huge quantities\nof food into these high rivers\n\nthat normally struggle\nto support much life.\n\nAlthough relatively lifeless,\n\nthe power of the upland rivers\nto shape the landscape\n\nis greater than any other stage\nin a river's life.\n\nDriven by gravity,\n\nthey're the most erosive forces\non the planet.\n\nFor the past 5 million years\n\nArizona's Colorado river\nhas eaten away at the desert's sandstone\n\nto create a gigantic canyon.\n\nIt's over a mile deep\n\nand at its widest\nit's 17 miles across.\n\nPlease Vote , Comment And share.!\nOur Facebook Page : https://www.facebook.com/Beauty-of-Nature-1585996034789321/\nOur Blog : https://articlejust4u.blogspot.com/",

a shaft in the ice\nopened by melt water\n\nas it plunges\ninto the depths of the glacier.\n\nLike the water running through it,\n\nthe ice itself is constantly moving,\n\nflowing down the valley\nwith unstoppable force.\n\nAlpine glaciers may seem immense,\n\nbut they're dwarfed by those in the great ranges\n\nthat divide the Indian\nsubcontinent from Tibet.\n\nThis is the boulder strewn snout\n\nof the giant Baltoro glacier\nin the Karakoram mountains of Pakistan.\n\nIt's the biggest mountain glacier\non Earth -\n\n43 miles long and over 3 miles wide.\n\nThis huge ice-filled valley\nis so large\n\nit's clearly visible from space.\n\nThis is the greatest concentration\nof peaks over 5 miles high\n\nto be found anywhere on Earth.\n\nThey're the most\ndangerous mountains of all.\n\nK2 and her sister peaks\nhave claimed more lives than any others.\n\nThe peaks here rise so precipitously,\n\nthe glaciers are so steep and crevassed\n\nthat few except the most skilled\nmountaineers can penetrate these ranges.\n\nMarkhor gather\nfor their annual rut.\n\nMales must fight\nfor the right to breed,\n\nbut on these sheer cliffs\nany slip by either animal could be fatal.\n\nA snow leopard -\n\nthe rarest of Himalayan animals.\n\nIt's a female returning to her lair.\n\nThese are the first intimate images\nof snow leopard ever filmed in the wild.\n\nShe greets her one year old cub.\n\nHer den is well chosen.\n\nIt has exceptional views\nof the surrounding cliffs.\n\nOn these treacherous slopes\n\nno hunter other\nthan the snow leopard\n\nwould have a chance\nof catching such fragile prey.\n\nA female with young\nmakes an easier target.\n\nHer large paws give\nan excellent grip\n\nand that long tail\nhelps her balance.\n\nSilently she positions herself\nabove her prey.\n\nShe returns with nothing.\n\nGolden eagles patrol these cliffs\nin search of the weak or injured.\n\nWith a 2 meter wing span\n\nthis bird could easily\ntake a young markhor.\n\nEagles hunt by sight\n\nand the thickening veil\nof snow forces them to give up.\n\nFor the leopard\nthe snow provides cover\n\nand creates an opportunity.\n\nThe worsening weather dampens\nthe sound of her approach\n\nallowing her to get\nwithin striking distance.\n\nIt was an act of desperation\n\nto try and catch such a large animal.\n\nWolves have made a kill\n\ngiving other hunters\na chance to scavenge.\n\nThe worst of the blizzard brings\nsuccess for the snow leopard,\n\nbut having descended so far\nto make the kill\n\nshe has a grueling climb\nto get back to her lair.\n\nThe cub must be patient.\n\nIt'll be a year\nbefore it has the strength and skill\n\nto kill for itself\non these difficult slopes.\n\nThe snow leopard is\nan almost mythical creature,\n\nan icon of the wilderness,\n\nan animal few humans\nhave ever glimpsed\n\nfor its world is\none we seldom visit.\n\nThe Karakoram lie\nat the western end of a range\n\nthat stretches\nacross a tenth of our planet -\n\nthe Himalayas.\n\nThese, the highest mountains\nof the world,\n\nlike other great ranges,\n\nwere created by the collision\nof continents.\n\nSome 50 million years ago\n\nIndia collided with Tibet\n\nthrusting up these immense peaks,\nwhich are still rising.\n\nThis vast barrier\nof rock and ice\n\nis so colossal\nit shapes the world's climate.\n\nWarm winds from India,\nfull of moisture,\n\nare forced upwards\nby the Himalayas.\n\nAs the air rises so it cools,\n\ncausing clouds to form\n\nand the monsoon is born.\n\nAt high altitudes\nthe monsoon rains fall as snow.\n\nHere, at the far eastern end\nof the range in China,\n\none inhabitant endures\nthe bitter winters out in the open.\n\nMost other bears would be\nsleeping underground by now,\n\nbut the giant panda can't\nfatten up enough to hibernate.\n\nIts food, bamboo, on which it totally relies\n\nhas so little nutritional value\n\nthat it can't build up\na store of fat like other bears.\n\nMost of the creatures here move up or down\nthe slopes with the seasons\n\nbut the panda is held\ncaptive by its diet\n\nfor the kind of bamboo it eats\nonly grows at this altitude.\n\nBut these forests hold\nfewer challenges for the more mobile.\n\nThe golden snap-nosed monkey,\nlike the giant panda, lives only in China.\n\nTheir thick fur allows them to survive\nat greater altitudes than any other monkey\n\nand when the cold bites\nthey have these upper slopes to themselves.\n\nEven if you have a warm coat\n\nit apparently helps to surround yourself\nwith as many layers as possible.\n\nBut at least these monkeys\nhave a choice -\n\nif they tire of tree bark\nand other survival food\n\nthey can always descend\nto lower warmer altitudes\n\nand not return there till spring.\n\nAs the snows retreat\n\ntrees come into bloom.\n\nCherry blossom.\n\nRhododendrons -\n\nhere in their natural home\nthey form great forests\n\nand fill the landscape\nwith the covers of a new season.\n\nThese forests are a host\nto a rich variety of springtime migrants.\n\nBeneath the blooms - be visitors here.\n\nThis is a frozen alien world.\n\nThis is the other extreme -\n\none of the lowest hottest places\non Earth.\n\nIt's over a hundred meters\nbelow the level of the sea.\n\nBut here a mountain is in gestation.\n\nPools of sulphuric acid are indications\n\nthat deep underground\nthere are titanic stirrings.\n\nThis is the Danakil Depression\nin Ethiopia,\n\nlying within a colossal rent\nof the earth's surface\n\nwhere giant land masses\nare pulling away from one another.\n\nLava rises to the surface\nthrough this crack in the crust\n\ncreating a chain of young volcanoes.\n\nThis one, Erta Ale,\n\nis today the longest continually\nerupting volcano on the planet,\n\na lake of lava that has been\nmolten for over a hundred years.\n\nThese same volcanic forces\nalso created Ethiopia's highlands.\n\n70 million years ago\n\nthis land was just as flat and as deep\n\nas the Danakil Depression.\n\nMolten lava rising\nfrom the earth's core\n\nforced up a huge dome\nof rock 500 miles wide,\n\nthe roof of Africa.\n\nOver millennia,\nrain and ice carved the rock\n\ninto a landscape\nof spires and canyons.\n\nThese summits, nearly 3 miles up,\n\nare home to some very\nremarkable mountaineers -\n\nGelada baboons.\n\nThey are unique\nto the highlands of Ethiopia.\n\nThe cliffs where they sleep\nare for expert climbers only,\n\nand Gelado certainly have\nthe right equipment.\n\nThe strongest fingers\nof any primate\n\nand an utterly fearless disposition.\n\nBut you need more than a head\nfor heights to survive up here.\n\nA day in a Gelado's life reveals\nhow they've risen to the challenge.\n\nFor all monkeys morning is grooming time,\n\na chance to catch up with friends.\n\nBut, unlike other monkeys,\n\nGelados chatter constantly\nwhile they do it.\n\nIt's a great way to network\nwhile your hands are busy.\n\nBut these socials can't go on\nfor too long.\n\nGelados have a busy daily schedule\n\nand there's work to be done.\n\nMost monkeys couldn't live up here.\n\nThere's no food\nand few insects to feed on.\n\nBut Gelados are unique -\n\nthey're the only monkeys in the world\nthat live almost entirely on grass.\n\nThey live in the largest assemblies\nformed by any monkeys.\n\nSome groups are 800 strong\n\nand they crop the high meadows\nlike herds of wildebeest.\n\nThe Gelados graze\nalongside Walia ibex,\n\nwhich are also unique\nto these highlands.\n\nThese rare creatures\nare usually very shy\n\nbut they drop their guard\nwhen the Gelados are around.\n\nYou might expect that grazers\nwould avoid each other's patch\n\nbut this is a special alliance\nfrom which both partners benefit.\n\nIt's not so risky\nto put your head down\n\nif others are on the lookout.\n\nEthiopian wolves -\n\nthey won't attempt an attack\nin broad daylight.\n\nBut at dusk the plateau becomes\na more dangerous place.\n\nWith the grazing largely over\n\nthere's a last chance to socialize\nbefore returning to the sleeping cliffs.\n\nAn early warning system\nputs everyone on the alert.\n\nTheir day ends as it began,\nsafe on the steep cliffs.\n\nThe Ethiopian volcanoes are dormant,\n\nbut elsewhere others still rage.\n\nVolcanoes form the backbone\nof the longest mountain chain on our planet -\n\nthe Andes of South America.\n\nThis vast range stretches 5,000 miles\nfrom the Equator down to the Antarctic.\n\nIt formed as the floor of the Pacific Ocean\n\nslid beneath the South American\ncontinent, buckling its edge.\n\nAt the southern end\nstand the mountains of Patagonia.\n\nIt's high summer,\n\nbut the Andes have the most\nunstable mountain weather on the planet\n\nand storms can erupt without warning.\n\nTemperatures plummet\n\nand guanacos and their newborn young\nmust suddenly endure a blizzard.\n\nTruly, all seasons in one day...\n\nA puma -\n\nthe lion of the Andes.\n\nPumas are usually solitary and secretive.\n\nTo see a group walking boldly\nin the open is extremely rare.\n\nIt's a family -\na mother with four cubs.\n\nShe has just one brief summer\n\nin which to teach them\ntheir mountain survival techniques.\n\nRearing four cubs to this age\nis an exceptional feat,\n\nbut she does have\nan excellent territory,\n\nrich in food and water.\n\nAlthough the cubs are now\nas large as their mother,\n\nthey still rely\non her for their food.\n\nIt will be another year\nbefore the cubs can hunt for themselves.\n\nWithout their mother's\nskill and experience\n\nthey would never survive\ntheir first winter.\n\nBattered by hurricane force winds,\n\nthese slopes are now lifeless.\n\nFurther north,\nthey hold other dangers.\n\nMoving at 250 miles an hour,\n\nan avalanche destroys\neverything in its path.\n\nIn the American Rockies\n\na 100,000 avalanches devastate\nthe slopes every winter.\n\nThis huge mountain chain\ncontinues the great spine\n\nthat runs from Patagonia to Alaska.\n\nThe slopes of the Rockies,\nbleak though they are,\n\nprovide a winter refuge\nfor some animals.\n\nA mother grizzly emerges\nfrom her den\n\nafter six months'\ndozing underground.\n\nHer two cubs follow her\n\nand take their first steps\nin the outside world.\n\nThese steep slopes provide\na sanctuary for the cubs.\n\nA male bear would kill\nand eat them given the chance.\n\nBut big animals find it difficult\nto get about here.\n\nMales may be twice\nthe size of a female\n\nand even she\ncan have problems.\n\nHer cubs, however,\nmake light of the snow\n\nand of life in general.\n\nBut the mother faces a dilemma:\n\nIt's six months\nsince she last fed\n\nand her milk is starting\nto run dry.\n\nShe must soon leave the safety\nof these nursery slopes\n\nand lead her cubs away\nfrom the mountain.\n\nIf she delays,\nthe whole family will risk starvation.\n\nSummer reveals the true nature\nof the Rockies.\n\nStripped of snow,\n\nthe peaks bear their sculpted forms.\n\nOnly now can mountaineers\nreclaim the upper reaches.\n\nTwo miles up the crumbling precipices\nseem devoid of life.\n\nBut there are animals here -\n\na grizzly bear.\n\nIt seems to be an odd creature\nto find on these high rocky slopes.\n\nIt's hard to imagine\nwhat could have attracted it here.\n\nAt this time of the year\nbears should be fattening up for the winter.\n\nYet they gather in some numbers\non these apparently barren slopes.\n\nThey're searching\nfor a rather unusual food -\n\nmoths.\n\nMillions have flown up here\nto escape the heat of the lowlands\n\nand they're now roosting\namong the rocks.\n\nMoths may seem\na meager meal for a bear,\n\nbut their bodies are rich in fat\n\nand can make all the difference\nin a bear's annual struggle for survival.\n\nAnother battle is being waged here\n\nbut on a much longer timescale.\n\nThese loose boulders are\nthe mountain's crumbling bones.\n\nThe Rockies are no longer rising\n\nbut slowly disintegrating.\n\nAll mountains everywhere are being\nworn down by frost, snow and ice.\n\nThe Alps were raised\nsome 15 million years ago\n\nas Africa, drifting northwards,\ncollided with the southern edge of Europe.\n\nThese spires are the eroded\nremains of an ancient seabed\n\nthat once stretched\nbetween the two continents.\n\nBut these are just\nthe Alpine foothills.\n\nThe range at its center\nrises to 3 miles high\n\nand is crowned\nwith permanent snows.\n\nThe Matterhorn,\n\nits summit too steep\nto hold a snow field.\n\nMont Blanc - the highest peak\nin Western Europe.\n\nThe distinctive jagged shapes\nof the Alps\n\nwere carved\nby those
