| title | What is ethereum? How bitcoin’s biggest rival could become the world’s most valuable cryptocurrency |
| body | The booming price of bitcoin over the last year has created a buzz around cryptocurrency that goes far beyond technology enthusiasts and free market libertarians. It has also helped draw attention to a number of other virtual currencies looming in its shadow, most notably ethereum. Ethereum was created in 2013 by a 19-year-old Russian programmer and launched in 2015. For the first two years its price remained below $10. Then, in 2017, it exploded. In the space of 12 months, one unit of the cyptocurrency – called an ether – surged in value to be worth around $1,400 at its peak in January 2018. While its price has since fallen back down to around $700, many still see it as the most promising of all cryptocurrency platforms, and therefore the one that holds the most potential for future price gains. Some even believe it could one day surpass bitcoin. “Ethereum has the possibility to overtake the market capitalisation, and thus value, of bitcoin,” Hubert Olszewski, director of business development at Blockchain Board of Derivatives, tells The Independent. “This is because from the get-go it was a more versatile tool.” When bitcoin became the world’s first decentralised digital currency upon its release in 2009, the world was reeling from the worst financial crisis in decades. So-called crypto-anarchists and others who were disillusioned by the recession hailed bitcoin for its ability to facilitate payments without the need for a bank. Essentially, they thought, it held the potential to revolutionise the global financial system. Since bitcoin’s inception, more than 1,500 other cryptocurrencies have appeared in its wake. Each one has attempted to offer something that bitcoin can’t, with the argument being that bitcoin’s core technology contains a number a fundamental flaws that are being exposed as its network grows. Some, like litecoin and bitcoin cash, have improved transaction times and lowered transaction costs. Ethereum’s aim, by contrast, is far more ambitious than simply improving upon bitcoin’s credentials as a payment system and store of value. “Bitcoin is a virtual currency, but also a store of value similar to gold. It’s limited to this function by its own design,” says Alessandra Sollberger, an early investor in bitcoin who has since diversified her cryptocurrency portfolio to include ethereum. “That’s different with ethereum. Beyond being a virtual currency, it’s been designed as a software platform that enables applications such as smart contracts – which are self-executing, secure contracts – to be built and to run without the need of a third party.” BITCOIN: IS THE VIRTUAL CURRENCY THE NEW GOLD STANDARD? Ethereum is therefore designed to not just decentralise traditional banks – as bitcoin sets out to do – but decentralise the entire internet. It does this by expanding upon bitcoin’s core technology called the blockchain, which is the online public ledger that permanently records the transactions made across the network. Using ethereum’s more versatile and advanced blockchain technology, anyone is able to create their own decentralised applications. “This opens up a vast potential of business use-case particularly as we move towards a much more connected and autonomous future,” says Erhan Korhaliller, founder of the blockchain specialist PR agency EAK Digital. “Ethereum has the potential to proliferate to all levels of business interaction.” By completely cutting out third parties, ethereum could one day transform the way we transfer everything, from online data to the property deeds of a house. In doing so, it has earned the nickname “World Computer”. “The ethereum platform has the potential to facilitate major innovation in applications, helping to usher a future in which self-driving cars, for example, can accept crypto in order to become self-sustainable,” says Gaurang Torvekar,co-founder and CEO of Indorse, a professional network powered by ethereum. “In the years ahead, there might even be a way in which we can use our smartphones for research that can cure cancer, and in turn get paid for it. With a growing number of companies across the globe working on groundbreaking applications using the ethereum blockchain, the future of innovation is bright, with endless possibilities on the horizon.” |

Beyond being a virtual currency, it’s been designed as a software platform that enables applications such as smart contracts – which are self-executing, secure contracts – to be built and to run without the need of a third party.”\n\nBITCOIN: IS THE VIRTUAL CURRENCY THE NEW GOLD STANDARD?\n\n\nEthereum is therefore designed to not just decentralise traditional banks – as bitcoin sets out to do – but decentralise the entire internet. It does this by expanding upon bitcoin’s core technology called the blockchain, which is the online public ledger that permanently records the transactions made across the network.\n\nUsing ethereum’s more versatile and advanced blockchain technology, anyone is able to create their own decentralised applications.\n\n“This opens up a vast potential of business use-case particularly as we move towards a much more connected and autonomous future,” says Erhan Korhaliller, founder of the blockchain specialist PR agency EAK Digital. “Ethereum has the potential to proliferate to all levels of business interaction.”\n\nBy completely cutting out third parties, ethereum could one day transform the way we transfer everything, from online data to the property deeds of a house. In doing so, it has earned the nickname “World Computer”.\n\n“The ethereum platform has the potential to facilitate major innovation in applications, helping to usher a future in which self-driving cars, for example, can accept crypto in order to become self-sustainable,” says Gaurang Torvekar,co-founder and CEO of Indorse, a professional network powered by ethereum.\n\n“In the years ahead, there might even be a way in which we can use our smartphones for research that can cure cancer, and in turn get paid for it. With a growing number of companies across the globe working on groundbreaking applications using the ethereum blockchain, the future of innovation is bright, with endless possibilities on the horizon.”",

| title | Steemit – STEEM Social Media Blockchain Cryptocurrency Rewards? |
| body | What Is Steemit? Steemit is a blockchain project that launched in March 2016. As of May 2017, the website had about 170,000 accounts. With Steemit, users receive financial rewards in the form of STEEM and Steem Dollars in exchange for creating and curating content. It’s kind of like Reddit and other social media platforms, but users can earn legitimate rewards for their work. The project was founded by Ned Scott and Dan Larimer, creator of BitShares. The two co-founders created the Steemit Inc. company in 2016. How Does Steemit Work? Steemit is based on a concept similar to Reddit. The website features a wide range of content and its main page, and users can upvote or downvote that content based on the perceived value of that content. What makes Steemit different is that the text content is saved in a blockchain. Using a blockchain allows Steemit to reward comments and posts with secure tokens and value. Steemit has two different digital tokens, including STEEM and Steem Dollars. STEEM is a cryptocurrencytoken, while Steem Dollars are pegged to the US dollar. Steemit can also host images. Users can upload images and other multimedia content. To format posts, Steemit uses a WYSIWYG editor, although users can also choose to use Markdown formatting with HTML elements. As with Reddit, Steemit users can upvote posts and comments. Authors who get upvoted can receive monetary rewards in the form of STEEM or Steem Dollars. Users are also rewarded for curating popular content. Curating content involves voting on comments and post submissions. The more STEEM Power a voter holds, the more vote strength they have. One final Steemit feature is the reputation system. New Steemit accounts start with a reputation of 25. As an account receives positive or negative votes, that reputation moves up or down. This incentivizes online etiquette. The Steemit Blockchain Steemit runs on a blockchain named Steem. Steem’s blockchain is designed to transfer tokens in a frictionless way while also hosting text and multimedia. Apps can also be built upon the Steem blockchain. Applications and websites can connect to the Steem blockchain. Because of its open and permissionless nature, it’s easy for third party apps and websites to build on the Steem blockchain. We’ve already seen a number of third parties do this. There’s an Instagram-like app that transforms Steemit into a more Instagram-styled interface. There’s also Busy.org, a Steem-interacting website that uses an alternative UI. Finally, eSteem is an Android and iOS app for Steemit. One of the unique features of the Steem blockchain is that it doesn’t use cryptographic hashes as addresses – like many blockchains use. Instead, users choose their own alphanumeric account names. That makes the accounts human-readable and easier to understand. Another unique feature of the Steem blockchain is its use of a delegated proof of stake consensus mechanism, where block-creating accounts called “witnesses” are elected by Steem stakeholders. Instead of relying on proof of work to find blocks, the Steem network actively schedules these accounts to improve the time between blocks to three seconds. Meanwhile, block producers receive a small portion of the rewards created in each block, with the rest being paid to authors and curators. In terms of transaction fees, Steemit has no transaction costs for rate limiting or to pay its block producers. Instead, accounts use something called bandwidth. Bandwidth replenishes quickly – so fast that a typical user is neither affected nor limited. Steemit Digital Tokens There are two digital tokens for Steemit, including STEEM and Steem Dollars. You manage these tokens through your Steemit wallet, which is hosted on Steemit.com. STEEM STEEM is Steemit’s base token. The token is currently available on multiple cryptocurrency exchanges. The market value of STEEM determines the value of the pool of rewards paid by Steemit. The value of STEEM is also connected to the value of Steem Dollars. One of the unique parts about the STEEM token is that it was launched with a highly-inflationary supply model that doubled every year. However, that changed as community demand increased. In December 2016, the inflation rate of Steem was dropped all the way down to 9.5% per year, with that inflation rate dropping by an additional 0.5% every year. Steem Dollars The Steem Dollar, or SBD, is a digital token pegged to the US dollar. You can trade Steem Dollars at cryptocurrency exchanges, or use them to buy goods and services online. You can also trade Steem Dollars for STEEM (and vice versa) using the internal marketplace on Steemit. Steem Dollars are an interest-generating asset. When you hold Steem Dollars, you’ll receive an interest rate. As of March 2017, the interest rate is set at 2% per year. That interest rate may rise if the value of Steem Dollars drops below the value of the US Dollar. It’s kind of like Steemit’s built-in monetary policy mechanism. The Steemit Wallet You control the digital tokens above from your Steemit wallet. The web-based wallet lets you easily transfer Steem Dollars and STEEM. Additionally, the wallet lets you transfer tokens to and from interest-generating accounts. If you deposit your cryptocurrency into a savings account, it will take three days to withdraw. Steemit Conclusion Ultimately, Steemit is a unique social media website that rewards content curators and content posters. It uses a reputation system, a cryptocurrency system, and a built-in marketplace to promote good content. It’s like Reddit – but with rewards for people who post good content or contribute to curation tasks. Steemit has gathered a lot of momentum since 2016, and Steemit’s cryptocurrencies have a surprisingly large market cap. With over 170,000 users at last count, Steemit is quickly becoming the next social media giant. |

| title | How Does Cycling Benefit your Health? |
| body | To be fit and healthy you need to be physically active. Regular physical activity can help protect you from serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, mental illness, diabetes and arthritis. Riding your bicycle regularly is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Cycling is a healthy, low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. It is also fun, cheap and good for the environment. Riding to work or the shops is one of the most time-efficient ways to combine regular exercise with your everyday routine. An estimated one billion people ride bicycles every day – for transport, recreation and sport. Cycling for health and fitness It only takes two to four hours a week to achieve a general improvement to your health. Cycling is: Low impact – it causes less strain and injuries than most other forms of exercise. A good muscle workout – cycling uses all of the major muscle groups as you pedal. Easy – unlike some other sports, cycling does not require high levels of physical skill. Most people know how to ride a bike and, once you learn, you don’t forget. Good for strength and stamina – cycling increases stamina, strength and aerobic fitness. As intense as you want – cycling can be done at very low intensity to begin with, if recovering from injury or illness, but can be built up to a demanding physical workout. A fun way to get fit – the adventure and buzz you get from coasting down hills and being outdoors means you are more likely to continue to cycle regularly, compared to other physical activities that keep you indoors or require special times or places. Time-efficient – as a mode of transport, cycling replaces sedentary (sitting) time spent driving motor vehicles or using trams, trains or buses with healthy exercise. Back to top Health benefits of regular cycling Cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper, perspire and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level. The health benefits of regular cycling include: increased cardiovascular fitness increased muscle strength and flexibility improved joint mobility decreased stress levels improved posture and coordination strengthened bones decreased body fat levels prevention or management of disease reduced anxiety and depression. Back to top Cycling and specific health issues Cycling can improve both physical and mental health, and can reduce the chances of experiencing many health problems. Obesity and weight control Cycling is a good way to control or reduce weight, as it raises your metabolic rate, builds muscle and burns body fat. If you’re trying to lose weight, cycling must be combined with a healthy eating plan. Cycling is a comfortable form of exercise and you can change the time and intensity – it can be built up slowly and varied to suit you. Research suggests you should be burning at least 8,400 kilojoules (about 2,000 calories) a week through exercise. Steady cycling burns about 1,200 kilojoules (about 300 calories) per hour. If you cycle twice a day, the kilojoules burnt soon add up. British research shows that a half-hour bike ride every day will burn nearly five kilograms of fat over a year. Cardiovascular disease and cycling Cardiovascular diseases include stroke, high blood pressure and heart attack. Regular cycling stimulates and improves your heart, lungs and circulation, reducing your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Cycling strengthens your heart muscles, lowers resting pulse and reduces blood fat levels. Research also shows that people who cycle to work have two to three times less exposure to pollution than car commuters, so their lung function is improved. A Danish study conducted over 14 years with 30,000 people aged 20 to 93 years found that regular cycling protected people from heart disease. Cancer and cycling Many researchers have studied the relationship between exercise and cancer, especially colon and breast cancer. Research has shown that if you cycle, the chance of bowel cancer is reduced. Some evidence suggests that regular cycling reduces the risk of breast cancer. Diabetes and cycling The rate of type 2 diabetes is increasing and is a serious public health concern. Lack of physical activity is thought to be a major reason why people develop this condition. Large-scale research in Finland found that people who cycled for more than 30 minutes per day had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing diabetes. Bone injuries, arthritis and cycling Cycling improves strength, balance and coordination. It may also help to prevent falls and fractures. Riding a bike is an ideal form of exercise if you have osteoarthritis, because it is a low-impact exercise that places little stress on joints. Cycling does not specifically help osteoporosis (bone-thinning disease) because it is not a weight-bearing exercise. Mental illness and cycling Mental health conditions such as depression, stress and anxiety can be reduced by regular bike riding. This is due to the effects of the exercise itself and because of the enjoyment that riding a bike can bring. Back to top Hand cycling and health Hand cycles are similar to recumbent tricycles, but they are powered with hand instead of foot pedals. Velcro straps can be used to secure the hands to the pedals if necessary. This style of tricycle allows amputees, people with spinal injuries and those recovering from certain conditions such as stroke to cycle as a form of exercise and recreation. Hand cyclists get cardiovascular and aerobic benefits similar to those of other cyclists. |

| title | Bitcoin at $ 11 thousand currency |
| body | .jpeg) The price of a bitcoin is now 11 thousand dollars. More than Tk 9 lakh in Bangladeshi money. At the beginning of the year, the currency has been sold in virtual dollars for one thousand dollars. And when the most demand was made in June, the price was below 2.5 thousand. The price is rising as much as there is a strong tension between the investors. For the first time, the crypto-currency price for the first time reached a record milestone of 10 thousand dollars on Wednesday. On Thursday, it made more new heights. Two days before the sale was 9 thousand dollars. According to many, Bitcoin prices are no longer under control. Currently there are 1 crore 65 lakh Bitcoin Whose total value exceeds 167 billion dollars. Except daily, there are three thousand 600 Bitakayena. This week, the biggest crypto-currency from the market price of $ 9,000 for every coin. The price has risen more than 900 percent compared to a year ago. The price was rising rapidly since the beginning of this year. Against the price trend this month, suddenly a lot fell to less than five and a half thousand dollars. Turning from it, he made the record. In the last few days, the price increase has been known as 'classic bubble' or suddenly fluttering. According to them, its foundation is very weak - it can be a big fall at any time. As it was seen in 2013 for the first time in a price of one thousand dollars in 2013. At that time it grew rapidly, and it decreased as it was. In a few days, the bittacquena touching the sky has worsened the price increase. In a BBC report it has been referred to as 'unexpected height'. Various media reports have emerged as the prices are rising, the fact is that the quantum of the virtual currency is going to increase. A Bloomberg report said yesterday that Craze has increased with Bitcoin after the record high of 10 thousand dollars. Aspiring investors have lost their opportunities, fearing that they might start running. That's why not only the price hike, the service of big online sites of the crypto-currency lenidene are being interrupted. Somewhere there has been a delay in Lenneden. It is said mainly because of the increase in demand that news is happening. No one can say for sure why everyone is running behind or why the price is rising. A BBC report from the University of Cambridge University's Department of Business Gerrick Hilleman said rumors are a big issue. But due to the increase in usage, demand is rising slightly. He said, a small number of organizations have started taking Bitcoin from the customers. Travel bookings site Expedia - tech giant like Microsoft - even small businesses and some restaurants are also trading in these currencies. The JP Morgan chief showed negative attitude in this regard even a few days ago. But recently he mentioned this as a future, and has been told to raise the price of another BBC vibration in the BBC. 80 to 90 percent of the money used to be used as a currency. They think it as a virtual asset. This is going to go far further, because they are running behind such a high price. Many people have expressed doubts about the future of 'Bubble', in the present situation. Dr. Hilman identified two features of Bitcoin. It is being traded as a virtual currency and alternative currency. It is online instead of pocket notes or coins. There are some special ATMs, from which Bitcoin is available. Government or commercial banks do not provide it. Some of the companies are controlling it. |

| title | Theresa May condemns 'barbaric attack' in Syria |
| body | Theresa May has said she "utterly condemns" the "barbaric" alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria. The PM said if the attack was confirmed as another example of President Bashar al-Assad's regime's brutality, "the regime and its backers including Russia, must be held to account". Russia has said no evidence of a chemical weapons attack in formerly rebel-held Douma has been found. The US and France threatened a "joint, strong response" to the alleged attack. When asked whether she would recall Parliament over Syria, Mrs May said: "We are working urgently with our allies to assess what has happened and we are also working with our allies on what action might be necessary." Russia: No evidence of chemical attack Why is there a war in Syria? Trump condemns Syria for 'chemical attack' on Douma Medical sources say dozens were killed in Saturday's attack, but numbers are impossible to verify. Videos shot by rescue workers showed lifeless bodies of men, women and children with foam at their mouths. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had said no evidence of a chemical weapons attack had been found, saying Russian specialists and aid workers had visited the area. Russia - a key supporter of the Syrian government - has intervened militarily in the country. It launched an air campaign in support of Mr Assad in 2015 that was crucial in turning the war in the government's favour. The United Nations Security Council met on Monday to discuss the allegations, which saw the US and Russia trade barbs . Russian representative Vassily Nebenzia said the incident in Douma was staged and that US military action in response could have "grave repercussions". But US envoy Nikki Haley said Russia - a Syrian military backer - had the "blood of Syrian children" on its hands. 'Rules broken' On a visit to Denmark and then Sweden, Mrs May said the events in Douma fit into "a troubling wider pattern of acts of aggression and abuse of long-standing international norms on counter proliferation and the use of chemical weapons". She said Russia's "repeated vetoes" at the UN "have enabled these rules to be broken and removed mechanisms that allow us to investigate and hold to account chemical weapons attacks in Syria". "This must stop," she said. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson spoke to acting US Secretary of State John Sullivan on Monday about the incident, agreeing that it "bore hallmarks of previous chemical weapons attacks by the Assad regime", a statement from the Foreign Office said. US President Donald Trump has said that the situation was being assessed and "major decisions" would be made within 48 hours. Former Foreign Secretary William Hague has called for Mrs May to stand alongside the US, writing in the Daily Telegraph that chemical weapons will become "legitimised" and used in future wars if the West fails to take military action. Presentational grey line Analysis By John Pienaar, BBC News deputy political editor Theresa May's flying Scandinavian tour - Denmark and Sweden in less than 24 hours - was supposed to be routine. As if...! The prime minister's meetings with her counterparts in Copenhagen and Stockholm were wholly overshadowed by the alleged chemical attack in Syria: a challenge and a test not only for the Western powers and their allies, but for British global influence and for Mrs May herself. As she met the Danish leader, Lars Rasmussen, in Copenhagen, it was clear she was keen to keep in step with key allies like America. Read more from John Presentational grey line Tom Tugendhat, Tory chairman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee, told the BBC that the "UK should explore all options" and that is "absolutely right that we respond" to the attack in Syria. He said the evidence "points squarely to the Assad regime" and that the "UK government has the legal authority" to respond. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also condemned the use of chemical or biological weapons "in any scenario, anywhere in the world". "The tragedy and the terror of people's lives in Syria can only end by a political solution," he said. "That means every country in the region - every country in the region - as well as Russia and the United States coming together to ensure there is a meaningful ceasefire and there is a political process to bring about a political solution to the terror and tragedy and conflict that has wasted so many lives in Syria." Shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry said: "What has happened in Douma clearly looks to be just the latest abhorrent attack in Syria using chemical weapons, a war crime for which the Assad regime has been found responsible in the past and which we utterly condemn." Comparing the attack in Douma to the "similar recklessness" seen last month with the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in Salisbury, the prime minister added that together with the international community, the UK would not tolerate Russia's "increasingly hostile behaviour". |

| title | American politics are radicalizing. The damage will last generations. |
| body | In the world of progressive politics, all eyes are turned to Britain. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party, represents progressivism in its most uncompromising form. He and his party are proposing massive increases in social spending, tax hikes on businesses and the wealthy, rent control in major cities, a ban on fracking, a boost in the minimum wage and the re-nationalization of railroads and water companies. Corbyn himself has advocated unilateral disarmament, has urged the United Kingdom to leave NATO and has seldom found a socialist revolutionary he didn’t admire (including Hugo Chávez). And according to a recent YouGov-Times poll, Corbyn’s Labour Party is one point behind the Conservatives in voting intention. There is no immediate election on the horizon in the United Kingdom. And the disturbing ties between British leftism and anti-Semitism are emerging as a serious scandal. But there is little doubt that Corbyn’s forces have consolidated their hold on the Labour Party, that the party did better than expected in the 2017 election and that Corbyn is no longer unthinkable as a future prime minister. Whatever else Corbyn’s ascendance might mean, it is the death of Blairism — former prime minister Tony Blair’s attempt to define a center-left alternative to the Labour Party’s hard left. No more political trimming and tacking. Corbyn supporters regard themselves as part of a people-powered social movement — dedicated to economic equality and environmental protection, opposed to militarism and in revolt against a compromised establishment. There is no exact political equivalent to Corbyn himself in the United States, at least outside the faculty lounge. But a similar spirit could be seen in Bernie Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign — the romance of ideological purity. Sanders’s supporters were as opposed to (Bill) Clintonism as Corbyn’s are to Blairism, and for the same reasons. Many on the left have lost patience with centrism. They feel part of a progressive wave, a movement. They see no need to compromise, just to organize. In the United States, this tendency on the left is reinforced by President Trump’s consolidation of power in the Republican Party. Trump’s extremism — his combination of plutocracy, misogyny and nativism — has encouraged ideological ambition in his opponents. His vulnerability is taken not as an opportunity to build a broad political coalition against Trumpism — but as a chance to win without compromise. A chance to bury conservatism itself. Compared with Britain, this is a big and diverse country. So this trend on the left is not found everywhere equally. But consider recent events in California. In February, the state Democratic Party declined to endorse Sen. Dianne Feinstein for reelection. Though a liberal by almost any standard, Feinstein was not liberal enough for delegates at the party convention. Her challenger, state Sen. Kevin de León, attacked her support for school vouchers, for anti-terrorist surveillance, for “a criminal justice system propped up by institutional racism” and for the Iraq and Afghan wars. “The days of Democrats biding our time, biding our talk, are over,” de León told cheering delegates. “Leadership comes from human audacity, not from congressional seniority. . . . We demand passion, not patience.” Some progressives talk of California — with its political argument between left and lefter — as a model for the nation. A recent (and much tweeted) article by Peter Leyden and Ruy Teixeira concludes that bipartisanship is dead because the GOP is no longer a functioning partner. Describing our politics as a new civil war, they argue: “At some point, one side or the other must win — and win big. . . . Now the entire Republican Party, and the entire conservative movement that has controlled it for the past four decades, is fully positioned for the final takedown that will cast them out for a long period of time in the political wilderness. They deserve it.” In the GOP, fanaticism seems to have all the passion and energy. On the left, the same is increasingly true. But there are problems when politics ceases to be the realm of partial agreement and becomes a conflict of social movements. The virtues essential to self-government — civility, compromise and moderation of temperament — are devalued. The incremental reforms necessary to solve public problems become impossible. Opponents are dehumanized and viewed as enemies. The cruel and intemperate come to dominate our political life. Simply put: If the response to Trump is a general radicalization of American politics, the damage will last generations. Somehow, in the midst of so much fanaticism, moderation must find a passion of its own. Read more from Michael Gerson’s archive, follow him on Twitter or subscribe to his updates on Facebook . | body | Tacos When we say tacos, we don't mean the deep-fried jobbies dressed up in lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. We're talking traditional Mexican tacos, the kind you buy from street sellers in Mexico City and elsewhere in Mexico, those simple arrangements of homemade corn tortillas, meat, onions, cilantro, and squirts of lime. With such a short ingredients list and modest size, it's easy to underestimate the incredible marriage of flavors they deliver. That is, until you try them. Pavlova The great thing about Australia and New Zealand both laying claim as the originator of the pavlova is that it means there are two entire countries filled with chefs expertly creating delectible versions of the dessert. With its merengue-like base, whipped-cream topping, and generous adornment of whatever fruit is the most luscious at the time it's made (think kiwi, passion fruit, and strawberries), it's as light and refreshing as Christmas in summer. Which, not coincidentally, is often when it's served. Moules Frites No one does moules frites like the Belgians, who likely invented the dish hundreds of years ago. Simultaneously elegant and down-home, this isn't just a dish, it's a feast. Extravagant mounds of mussels atop a brothy sauce (often flavored with white wine) pair with thin, crisp French fries that were born for just this sort of union. And you, lucky you, get to unite them all with your fork and your appetite. Pastilla The glorious pastilla (also spelled bastilla, b'stila, or bisteeya) presents a slight translation problem. Taste the elaborate Moroccan meat pie—which blends a thin, crisp outer layer of dough with a rich filling of poultry, onions, almonds, sugar, and spices—and there's no resisting it. But read some version of the words "sweet-and-sour pigeon pie" and you might not order it at all. Ignore that instinct of self-preservation and try this comforting dish—your belly will thank you. Croissants There are plenty of French foods that could have made this list, but croissants stand out because they're simply not the same anywhere else in the world. In France, the stars of flour and butter, geography and weather, steam and heat all align to create the world's most perfect croissants. Tear open the flaky and golden outside to reveal a delicate, airy interior. To find a croissant that will change your life, look for local boulangers who make their own rather than trucking in goods from large central bakeries. |

| title | 5 Item Foreign Foods You’ve Got to Try Before You Die |
| body | Ceviche Who needs fire when you've got the acidic power of citrus to do the cooking? Ceviche—the bewitching blend of raw fish, citrus juice, and a little something extra like onion, cilantro, and salt and pepper—is a food that inspires devotion in Central and South America. It's got everything going for it: the combination of textures, the bright flavors, the incredibly fresh fish. It's a dish as delicious tossed together with just-caught fish onboard a boat as it is enjoyed in a traditional cevicheria. Each country with a ceviche culture does things a little differently, so you may need to travel and sample extensively to find your favorite. Bibimbap There's so much going on with bibimbap; it's a veritable Korean kitchen sink—and it tastes so good. Admire the artful arrangement of meats and vegetables atop a bowl of warm white rice, then adjust the seasoning with various sauces or chili pastes, mix it all up, and savor a new flavor with every bite. For added excitement, try the version served in a hot stone pot, which turns any rice touching its sides crisp and golden. Chole Bhature In a world of earth-bound breads, India's bhature reaches for the sky. The wildly puffy bread makes a serious statement straight from the fryer. Served with chole, a spicy chickpea curry, the classic Punjabi combination is rich, filling, and totally addictive. Some restaurants throw in contrasting flavors such as sweet chutney, tart lemon, or spicy pickles on the side. Butter Tart You know you're an iconic (and irresistible) treat when you have your own hashtag (#buttertart), food trail, and festival. That's the case with Ontario favorite butter tart. Much better—but nearly as rich—as it sounds, the Canadian butter tart falls somewhere between a British treacle and a French tarte au sucre, with butter, sugar, syrup, eggs, and sometimes raisins or nuts baked inside a flaky crust. It's rich without being cloying, utterly indulgent, and definitely reason enough to return to the Canadian province again and again. Miang Kham Salty, sweet, spicy, and tart hold hands and serenade your taste buds with every bite of miang kham. Hailing from Thailand and Laos, the popular street food and party snack starts with a leaf (everything from cabbage and spinach to local wild pepper), onto which you pile little bits of diced ginger, coconut, peanuts, lime, and dried shrimp. A sweet, tangy sauce gets drizzled on top and then the whole thing is wrapped up and devoured with delight. |

| title | Myanmar groups criticise Zuckerberg's response to hate speech on Facebook |
| body | Myanmar groups criticise Zuckerberg's response to hate speech on Facebook. A consortium of civil society, human rights and monitoring groups in Myanmar have criticised Mark Zuckerberg’s response to the spread of hate speech on the platform and accused the social media giant of failing to act quickly enough to curtail dangerous messages that incited violence inside the country. Earlier this week, Zuckerberg told VoxFacebook’s systems had detected a pair of chain letters spreading around Myanmar on Facebook Messenger last year. One warned of an imminent attack by Muslims on 11 September. “That’s the kind of thing where I think it is clear that people were trying to use our tools in order to incite real harm,” Zuckerberg said. “Now, in that case, our systems detect that that’s going on. We stop those messages from going through.” However, the groups, which have worked with Facebook to flag dangerous content, have revealed it took more than four days for the company to respond when the messages started circulating online during the Rohingya crisis. In an open letter addressed to Facebook’s chief executive, they accused company of being ill-equipped to deal with the risks posted to society by the network. The six organisations who wrote the letter said they did the heavy lifting during the emergency escalation of concerns over the messages. We believe your system, in this case, was us – and we were far from systematic,” they said. “We identified the messages and escalated them to your team via email on Saturday the 9th September, Myanmar time. By then, the messages had already been circulating for three days.” In one message, it was claimed that the Rohingya, referred to in the racist term Kalar, “are planning to launch a Jihad on 11 September. Warn your friends. The order to get ready with guns has already been issued in the army.” This post was shared with hundreds of thousands of citizens across the country, urging recipients to forward the message on to friends and family. At the same time, messages targeting the Muslim community were told: “On 11 Sept in Yangon, MaBaTha and extremist nationalists will collaborate and they will launch an anti kalar movement.” The group said Facebook failed to stop the dissemination of the messages. “Far from being stopped, they spread in an unprecedented way, reaching country-wide and causing widespread fear and at least three violent incidents in the process,” the letter said. The rumours of an imminent attack spread on Facebook Messenger and were “felt across the country”, internet freedom activist and the director of the Myanmar ICT for Development Organisation, Htaike Htaike, told The Guardian. “As a result, you could feel it on the streets, as there were less people commuting, parents pulling their children out of school as well.” The six organisations who signed the letter were surprised that that Zuckerberg had praised the effectiveness of Facebook “systems”. Your team did not seem to have picked up on the pattern,” they stated. “For all of your data, it would seem that it was our personal connection with senior members of your team which led to the issue being dealt with.”The group said a major obstacle was the lack of Burmese-speaking Facebook staff. “We were lucky to have an English-speaking foreigner who was confident and connected enough to escalate the issue. This is not a viable or sustainable system, and is one which will inherently be subject to delays,” the letter said. The group said Facebook was also reluctant to engage with local stakeholders. Despite informal briefings held when Facebook representatives visited Myanmar, the groups claim that Facebook has so far been unwilling to address problems with emergency solution responses. “Your engineering team should be able to detect duplicate posts and ensure that identified hate content gets comprehensively removed from your platform,” the groups wrote. “We’ve not seen this materialise.” A Facebook spokesperson said: “We don’t want Facebook to be used to spread hatred and incite violence, and we are very grateful to the civil society groups in Myanmar who have been helping us over the past several years to combat this type of content. “We are sorry that Mark did not make clearer that it was the civil society groups in Myanmar who first reported these messages. We took their reports very seriously and immediately investigated ways to help prevent the spread of this content. We should have been faster and are working hard to improve our technology and tools to detect and prevent abusive, hateful or false content.” |
